Hamas official slams spy-claim book

Watch the complete interview with Mosab Yousef on our podcast.

(CNN) - A top official in the Palestinian militant group Hamas lashed out at the son of a Hamas founding member who says in a new book he was an Israeli spy for a decade.

"The Israelis issued this book as a kind of propaganda. When you say that he was working for his enemies, it means that he lies for his own people, and we expect that there are big lies in this book," Osama Hamdan told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview from Damascus, Syria.

"He's a big liar. He lost his faith. He lost his moralities. And he's working for the enemies who are killing his own people, who are arresting his father, and who are occupying his country," Hamdan declared Wednesday.

In his book, Mosab Hassan Yousef says he gathered information about Hamas terrorist plots and fed them to Israel's domestic security service Shin Bet, and thereby saved countless Israeli and Palestinian lives.

Yousef, in an interview with Amanpour, said he did it because he came to believe that Hamas was practicing "exceptional cruelty" against its members and "killed people for no reason."

Watch the full interview here

He wrote a book, "Son of Hamas," from his new base in the United States, where he has lived since 2007.

CNN could not independently confirm his story, and Israel has refused to comment.

A journalist specializing in intelligence matters on the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Yossi Melman, said he believes Yousef's story, even though some people say he is exaggerating his role.

"I know that his story is, generally speaking, accurate, (but he) may be slightly over inflating his own role and its importance," Melman told Amanpour.

"He was not the only agent that the Israeli security service had at the time inside Hamas. The intelligence work is a mosaic work. You need many sources."

Melman suggested the book is an embarrassment for the Israeli security services, because they want to protect the names of their sources and agents.

Hamdan though said that the militant group's security people "discovered (Yousef) had some problems, so he was far from any sensitive issues inside Hamas."

He said Israel, through Yousef's book, is trying to create the impression that its security services can go anywhere and touch anyone inside Hamas.

"It doesn't make any sense inside Hamas. There is no disturbance, as maybe some Israelis believe."

Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Middle Eastern politics at the London School of Economics, said Hamas is a very secretive organization that is extremely difficult for a young man like Yousef to penetrate or to infiltrate the military wing.

"We are dealing with an underground world, a universe of espionage, where it's very difficult to disentangle myth from reality," he added. "This is a very, very complex universe where lies are the norm, not the exception."

Gerges said Yousef certainly was an Israeli agent but exaggerates greatly, and his story calls for skepticism. He added that Palestinians with whom he has spoken in recent days say Yousef's claims are "a pack of lies."

Melman, though, insisted the book is not a "pack of lies." He went on to say, "But at the same time, I think he's a bit exaggerating his role and his importance in providing information for Israel and for helping Israel protect its national interest and to protect the safety of our civilians."

Hamdan had a very different picture of what's happening in the Israeli-Arab conflict.

"They (Israel) are the terrorist state in the region, killing the Palestinians under their occupation, like what happened in Gaza last year, what happened in Lebanon in 2006," Hamdan said.

Gerges said the bigger story coming out of the controversy over the book is how Israel has successfully recruited thousands of Palestinians to be Israeli agents.

"This tells you about the fragmentation of Palestinian society. It tells you about the resources and the means by which Israel infiltrates Palestinian society," Gerges said.

"Palestinians have been engaged in a civil war as a result of this espionage because, as we know, many supposed or alleged agents have been killed by both the Palestine Liberation Organization and Hamas."

Certainly, cultural barriers dictate the nuances of each style and tenor of communication. Hamdam, the Hamas spokesman although seemingly rude, I've noticed, was trying to communicate effectively in the most respectful manner that he knows the Western world would accept perhaps. I had an inkling that in casual conversations, he would turn frenetic with each question and clarifications thrown.

I love the way Ms. Christiane Amanpour was able to stick into the meat of the issue without being offensive herself - indeed a skill that should be practiced by every interviewee to ferret out the truth.

This reminds me of Walid Shoebat, another Palestinian who has also been touted as a legitimate source of anti-Palestinian rhetoric. Shoebat has been proven to be a fraud and a liar. I have no doubt that the same fate awaits Mosab Hassan Yousef. Like Shoebat, Yousef will be reviled by those who know the facts regarding the conflict as a traitor who hopes to gain personally by betraying his people who have suffered over 60 years of dispossession, expulsion, occupation, oppression and humiliation at the hands of expansionist Israel. In short, a tawdry distasteful affair that brings to mind Britain's Lord Haw Haw and others during WWII. It will soon be forgotten.

Christiane, your professional skills are exceptional. History will not easily forget you role in the resolution of the Middle East Conflict. I believe Yousef story. He has profound information on the workings of Hamas. It is only natural for Hamas to deny his story but we know it is true. I believe it is time for Hamas to stop practicing " exceptional cruelty" and bend to negotiations instead of killing innocent people whether Palestinians or Israelis.

This is a great example of low class journalism, I was very disappointed with Ms. Amanpour choice of a source to her story. A traitor to his people, to his family and properly as well to his cause. It seems very obvious confused brainwashed young man, portrayed to us as a false hope to a good story, because of what his father represents. Please, find better stories for us we are in 2010.

I enjoyed the interview, Yousef made some good points and some points that in my opinion I disagree with. The points that he made about the God of Islam seems a little controversial due to the fact that God in any Abrahamic religion never endorses killings of innocent civilians, however Mosab Hassan Yousef admitted that it does happen. The message in each of the Abrahamic religions will off course have different messages due to them being different religions but a man to say that the message is completely wrong is unorthodox. I myself have many Christian and Jewish friends, I respect their beliesf and I never question them, I only question a belief is when I don't understand it. However, theology can work different ways it can both make or disprove our points depending on how we interpret them and use them. Yousef's interview is only one among many, he claimed that he was the reason for his father's existence among many other claims that are similar, however I agree with Melman who said that he inflated his words.

I think this was quite intresting. The naivete exibited by Mosab Yousef, is stark. On the, one hand committing treason against the Palestinians, to save his Father and "Peace". The other hand, what society sanctions treason. We are now hearing about the capture of Adam Ghadan, who;s going to be tried for treason in our country,

Another disturbibg element of Mosab's interview is his defaming of Islam. "The Koranic God, being different from the Torah or Biblical God". They are one and the same, his great pains to describe it, leads me to believe, that he is now under the influence of American Fundamenalist Messianic Christians.

Israel is a racist society, Hamas in Gaza and their ideology are also racist. Israel raised a Jewish flag and Hamas an Islamic one, what's the difference? I think Mosab is at best, dilsional. He's wrong, Israel is wrong and Hamas are wrong.

I agrre with this mans statements, except that he should clarify that the differences he's refering to is actually "the conception" of God. God is God, it's only how each of us perceives Him. So let him teach about the conception of God, which actually depends on your own state of mind. And if you are a little "off" so to speak, then your conception of God will also be a little "off".

Mosab Yousef told the truth when he said the God of the Koran is the biggest terrorist of all. The Koran is a jumble of near-psychotic ramblings. Mohammed was a psychopath who began his reign of terrror with mass decapitation of people who refused to convert. Psychopaths rise to power in Islam with or without the passion for preaching hatred. Mosab Yousef told the truth when he said he realized the goal of Hamas was to murder civilians. Moab Yousef is the first Palestinian to accept the challenge of Barack Obama's speech in Cairo where he encouraged non-violent resistance and condemned the mass murder of civilians as a political statement. Mosab Yousef shows courage.

If Mosab Hassan Yousef's tale is to be believed, how could he state during the interview that he wasn't part of the military wing of Hamas, yet knew the whereabouts of suicide bombers, and therefore was able to save the bombers lives and the lives of their intended victims.

In the real world wouldn't that kind of information be on a need to know basis? Wouldn't he have to have been part of that particular terror cell to know that kind of insider information?

How can this young person claim that he understands the Quran more than a billion people and would be the first to discover that God of the Quran is a "gangster" knowing that this religion has been out for more than 14 centuries. Second, he's no special. Traitors have been around as long as humans been around. He's not the first nor the last. He's being pimped out by the Zionist, once they're done they spit on him like his likes before him and after him.

I found myself relating to, and agreeing with Mr. Yousef's observations about differences in Hamas and Israel's intelligence agency, up until he vilified the "Quoran's God" as the real culprit in the bloody violence of suicide bombers and fundamentalist ideologies. He seems to mean well, but is misguided. Consider his background and sources, however: Hamas in Palestine as the backdrop to his experiences with Islam. He completely ignores the rest of the world's peaceful Muslim population who don't subscribe to violence. Unfortunately, those Muslims are poorly represented in today's media.
He also ignores the bloody history of violence within Christianity itself.
I was glad to hear Ms. Amanpour point out the fact that the Quoran's teachings are indeed subject to interpretation, despite Mr. Yousef's claim to "know" the Quoran and the religion. What he "knows" is not the same as what the rest of the educated, intelligent and peace-loving Muslims apparently know: violence is not the ways of any of the Abrahamic religions. It is subject to human interpretation, and the blame should lie with the person comiting the act. What he is saying is like blaming weapon , rather than the murderer. It's an easy scapegoat, that holds no water.

On a second note: Mr. Yousef pointed out that he is not afraid of being killed because "physical death is not the worst thing that could happen", spiritual and "soul death" is what he fears. He then continuously brings up the number of lives he has saved during his work for Shin Bet, including the life of his father. This is in contradiction to his belief that physical death is not the worst that can happen. A bit of an inconsistency in his ideology.

How so many think that this son of Hamas is a confused and is not as he claims he is. Why is it not possible to believe that the god of Islam is NOT the God of the Torah? Ignorance of the Bible and of the Quran is obviously the strength of most here.

Study and read the Quran if you are a Christian. Study the Bible if you are a Muslim. Then....perhaps you will understand why he is what he is today and why he would not be afraid though many would want him dead for he responded to Amanpour by a contented smile saying the God is with him. Not the god of Quran but the God of Torah, the Bible, is with him. And he is not afraid of physical death but he is afraid of the spiritual death and the death of one's soul.

Then why would he be convinced that he wants to save his people from being targeted by Shin Bet? Because of his belief. And his belief is that no one can be saved unless they believe in the God of the Torah, the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob continue to protect him and to fight from him and may the Truth be heard.

I found this interview interesting. I felt Mosab's explination was sincere. Sometimes when one sees events taking place through a different lens or perspective........they change. I regret that he said that Islam is the problem. I don't think it's Islam, I think that it is the destorted view that someone would have who experienced extremist Islam ideology such as Hamas. He denounced the targeting and killing of innocent people. Why wouldn't anyone with half a brain denounce this. Family or no family-I would denounce it even if my father did this....wouldn't you? It takes guts to do what he'd doing! Why did you taunt him and accuse him of turning his back on his family?
He is neither a Jew or a Muslim....He's a Christian now. Making a stance for non-violence......what is wrong with that. Amanpor....why do you find this so hard to understand?

All of Yousef's actions point only to one inescapable declaration; He saw the truth of the one living God and the lie of Islam.

Christiane, you should have stopped that atheist, money worshiper from humiliating sacred Islamic believes and giving enough reasons to those who distorts the image of Islam in increasing the acts of terrorism in the name of Islam.

I have to clarify one issue: one of the funniest points in that weak propaganda is that he keep swearing ALLAH (GOD of Qoraan) and at the same time he asks Moslems to understand their Qoraan. If he hates ALLAH that much he shouldn’t invite people to understand his holly book, right!

Wow. So many comments about how "crazy" Mosab Hassan Yousef is, he's a terrorist? He's all those "things" you say he is by what he said in this interview. I don't know much about him, but it looks like he has really figured it out to me. There is only one God. There is only ONE WAY to him. He is Jesus. That is the message Mosab was saying. And you know what....you don't have to blow yourself up, kill children, etc to make that point or even force people to believe it. But here's the deal. The American "belief" system made it the greatest country on earth. Biblical laws are inscribed on every monument in Washington...on the doors of the suprement cout. Simply, it works. Go to a Muslim country and find your freedom evaporate...gone! Why Christianity gets bashed when its made the greatest contributions to the world of ANY religion both in laws of fairness, all our great Universities, treatment of people, and money contributions to help others just reinforces its truth. No other religion compares...no faith compares...and people who don't want to hear the truth make up all kinds of reasons to bash it...hate it...because their deeds and thoughts are evil.
