Dear Manal, I respect your opinion. However, do you not think that the picture that you drew about women in Saudi Arabia has sophistries? Yes, there are rights Said women should fight to get, on the other hand, women in Saudi Arabia enjoy many privileges that women from other countries covet to have.
Thank you for your very interesting and erudite piece featuring Manul and discussing the position of women within Saudi society. She is an eloquent spokeswoman for equal citizenship for women in the kingdom. It is hard, in a western country, to appreciate the cultural forces at play in Saudi Arabia (and other countries) that place women in a position of subservient guardianship, or even chattel. Nonetheless, we should remember that women in our own society are not far removed from that situation either, and in some places and subcultures in the U.S., women are still in situations as dire (or worse) than those of Saudi women. I have every hope that Manul and the women with whom she works can effect change through respectful dialogue and subtle pressures brought to bear. She is an intelligent and saavy young woman who seems to know just where, and how hard, to push. I wish her the best of luck, and Allah's blessing in her quest.
