What is it about Americans and guns?
How much time do you have?
"I can tell you that I don't think there's any other developed country in the world that has remotely the problem we have," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said after the shooting rampage in Colorado.
There are an estimated 270 million guns in the hands of civilians in the United States, making Americans the most heavily armed people in the world per capita. Yemen, a tribal nation with no history of strong central government or the rule of law, comes in a distant second. << FULL POST >>

In response to the false argument that says: "We had citizens stopping attacks from crazy guys with guns at public places, so everybody is safer if guns are allowed as they are now." one must simply perceive that: If people were not allowed to have weapons as easily as they do nowadays, those crazy ones would not have had the opportunity to acquire them, in the first place.
In Europe, where I live, these massacres are so less frequent.
That was NOT an open and honest debate – why do you, (as a purported unbiased host) refuse to allow discussion on the gun/violence issue that does not align with your pre-concieved notions? There are countless murders and acts of violence that take place every week, which involve illeagal weapons. The current laws are not effectively emforced, and you believe the solution is more laws. Why not be honest? If you just want to discuss your view of the problem, and your preferred solutions – just say that up front. While you are deluding yourself, and others – there continues to be a problem with our society when a Columbine or Theater Massacre or Gabby Gifford incidents can happen. Bear in mind that no one noticed problems with these people beforehand. You should seek an honest examination of the events if you really wish to discover the root cause.
You live in the US, you get shot, you live in the UK, you get stabbed. Violence is the problem, not arms control. What we should do is educate, not legislate. Timothy McVeigh, know for the worst mass murder in the US, didn't use a firearm. In France, Mohamed Merah used a fully automatic AK-47; how did he get that in a country with strong gun control laws? The problem is violence not arms control. Amanpour, stop being biased, investigate report and stop saying Europe is better than the US on this issue. Before Brevik in Norway, tons of guns and no violence... so one person, determined to kill people will, I believe the debate shouldn't be about limiting peoples access to arms, but rather how to educate people to live in harmony and respect eachother.
P.S. I am an American living in Western Europe for 8 years now and I have seen more gratuitious and brazen, albeit non leathal, violence here in Europe than American... that goes virtually unpunished. In any event I know speaking about gun control sells more air time; your report is particulary biased in that your opinion is not even veiled.
Think about this: There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. – Henry David Thoreau
I know hacking at the branches sells more... especially if it is 'du jour'; no longer see you as a great reporter but rather editorialist.
Great interview Christine well done.
Finally this weekend I saw liberal media being agressive and assertive. Ali Velshi also made me a fan this week end on his tough stance on the banks. Both of you very accurate, true dair I say entertaining.
As a christian and a right thinkin person,I personaly believe that these law empowering/enabling every American to own or posses a weapon is totally unacceptable and should be condermed by every human out there.now, imagine if every person on eart had a gun....then there would have been a towering rate of dirth on a daily basis because so many people would be tempted to use a gun wen slightly provoked or angerd by another person, all in the name of self "defence"...so i suggest tha we be wise and give peace a chance to breath!!God bless America.

GUN CONTROL IS NEEDED. All people who are saying that if we allow all people to carry guns then someone could have shot down Holmes that night? Right?
So, what's the plan?...from now onwards then ALL 300 Million Americans will start carrying guns and AK-47 rfiles to grocery stores, movies, coffee shops, barber shops, salons, nails...
That will be so easy to implement. How about high school teens...there were murders in Columbine...So...that means we will now allow all 5-18 year olds to carry compact guns (or maybe rifles) in their backpacks....IT MAKES TOTAL SENSE
COOL, that makes a lot of sense!!!!
Whats funny is people don't see what happened to the U.K. They have a total gun ban.. Can anyone explain why gun crime went UP over there? Funny, right?! Without firearms, people are begging to be killed, raped, you name it! One more thing.. is why can't people understand that it is not hard to get a firearm off the streets. I am a law abiding citizen and i will protect myself at all times with my firearm if need be. I respect the law, i respect firearms, but even more so.. i respect the lives of my loved ones and my own.
