We are all Arabs

Does this kaffiyeh make me look Arab?

Bahraini artist Mohamed Kanoo sure hopes so. He's re-imagined our political and entertainment elite as Arabs - a plea for tolerance in an age when the word "Arab" is often a pejorative.

From Oprah al-Winfrey to John bin Travolta - even Barack abu Obama. Kanoo is having a bit of fun, but his message is serious.

"Tolerance is an important aspect of our faith as Arabs and Muslims," Kanoo says. "Contemporary human difficulties are common problems for all humanity. That is what brings us together."

Tolerance is an important aspect of your faith, Mr. Kanoo? Who are the Arabs and the Muslims tolerant with? Women? Other religions? We are NOT all Arabs, Mr. Kanoo. As a woman and a Christian (although not a practicing one, I am FREE to say) luckily, we are not.

Do we really have to limit ourselves to a religion, race, color and all other differences? Can't we all just live and love without limits? Can't we just treat each other the way one would love to be treated? I believe limiting one's belief to one thing is wrong. We have been blessed with brains to notice and create options so why don't we just live and love and stay in harmony? Tolerate the other as you woulld love them to tolerate you,

Why not ALL of us be Americans? The whole world – All, women/men, have an equal say in government, freedom of movement, ownership of property, access to (not paid for by someone else) education? That would not be acceptable in some countries, under some governments, in some households (as a matter of custom, not abuse). So THAT's why we can't all be Arabs. Some of us don't agree with the laws and customs. Tolerance?
