For the past 20 years, the world has been steadily working towards holding even the very highest officials accountable.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established in 1993. It was the first war crimes tribunal since the Nuremberg trials, which prosecuted Nazi leaders for genocide after World War II.
At the turn of this millennium, for the first time ever, a sitting head of state was indicted, imprisoned and tried: Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, though he died before the trial ended. But generals and foot soldiers have been convicted. And in a landmark case, rape as a weapon of war has been determined to constitute a crime against humanity.
So from Liberia to Libya, the long arm of international justice has reached out to meet people's demands to hold their leaders and their warlord’s accountability for the most heinous of crimes. It is tough, slow going and sometimes critics even say that seeking justice can get in the way of sealing peace, but Judge Theodor Meron says that there is no alternative. He is the president of the International Criminal Tribunal and has spent decades laying down the law.
You can watch my interview with Meron in the video above.
I thought this was going to be about Arresting George Bush for war crimes.
GEORGE BUSH needs to be put on trial, I was also hoping this was going to shed some light on how to get him. Try the guy, then hang him in Iraq.
Oh, darn it; I was just about to say that... It does make you think though, doesn't it? How come all the people put on trial are only those criminals OUTSIDE the Western sphere of influence? Africans, Arabs, and Eastern Europeans; the impression is that if you were an ally of NATO and THEN committed crimes against humanity, the ICC looks the other way.
Funny - I thought the same thing !!!!! GWB sure deserves to be!!
Arrest Obama!! If you people think GWB deserves it, Obama deserves it 200 times more!!
Obama may be a bad guy, but Bush, the child and the elder, cheny, rumsfield, ashcroft, wolf, pearl, rice, powell, and all international war criminals, and should be hanged at the haug, just like the nazis after ww2. Bush and cheney are no better than hitler.
And what country, exactly, did Obama invade? What conflict has he initiated? None that i have seen. And to cap this off, he's actually drawn bush's conflict to an end. A conflict based on false accusations of WMD's. You may hate Obama, but I think you're ignorant. You didn't present any validity to your comment. I support Obama, especially since he is shifting the focus back to domestic issues and strengthening our core. So tired of redneck comments.
Arrest Obama? Why? Your statement alone doesn't mean a thing. It would be all the better for FACTS. You seem to feel people don't need facts, because it is YOU who is saying it – therefore, it MUST be true.
Except that it isn't.
Is it the melanin in his skin that drives you to seek his impeachment? He has fought hard for things that will benefit even YOU, yet you hate him. Does a rational person hate someone who gives him what he NEEDS? Like health care?
Against stupidity, the gods themselves are helpless.
You have an agenda. Fine. But don't think you can serve that agenda by making flat unsubstantiated statements. Your dog don't hunt, old bean.
TGBoleyn, obama the great hypocrit didn't exactly back out of the wars bush entered, did he? did he? did he? he has not closed gitmo, has he? has he? has he? he continues to authorize drone strikes and intrusions into pakistan, doesn't he? doesn't he? doesn't he? (actually this is perhaps the only thing i even respect him for. ) shifting focus back to domestic issues? that depends on what you mean exactly...he hasn't repealed any of the encroachments on personal liberties put in place by the last administration, has he? has he? has he?
He should have been, and Cheney, Rumsfield, Rove and all that gang. We invaded Iraq without provocation. They did not have WMD. We have now killed thousands of Iraqis – for what??? It's shameful.
If only. But america has bought the right wing christian lie for over 10 years now, why should it stop
mickey1313, you need to be aware that obama has been president for the LAST four years. so i guess there are four more years at least for america to listen to the alternative liberal q-bait lie. both lies are really just one and the same, but as long as they can stir your polarized hatred, they have you right where they want you. get yourself checked for partisan rabies.
Please CNN, time for change reform? Thoughts in goodwill for consideration? What about those that brought the Viet Nam War or the war in Iraq? Or how about an investigation of the man who had been a Canadian PM and who was reported to have sold out to the Germans, taking money under the table from a German arms dealer? With bribes from others? I thought that when talking of presidents I thought we could also talk of people who some reported sold out Canada? I would respectfully suggest that the victims include some officials in government who knew and disgreed but were maligned anyway as being part of a gang selling out Canada and were never given their days in court in order to see justice and closure? Why are such cases not in the the ICC? International Criminal Court where possible corruption of this kind can be investigated properly and more openly?
George w Bush should be put on trial.
Bush made sure that the U.S. would not sign up as a participant in the International Criminal Court. We've learned why, of course. But although Bush's complicity with the plan was essential (he'd have had to give orders to the military for its part in the situation), the real culprits were Cheney and his neocon cohorts. Bush was inveigled into participating based on his ultra-fundie religion. To him, it was vital that Israel still exist on the day of Armageddon. And he was led to believe that it could be accomplished by participating fully in the 9/11 scheme to "augment" an attack on one WTC tower by rabid Muslims. They were ready and waiting for the attack. When it occurred, their pre-arranged plan was put into action.
The second WTC plane was an unmanned drone, made up to look something like a commercial airliner. The towers had been prepared for detonation at least a week before 9/11. The demolition charges were then set off about an hour after the attacks, when the heat inside the towers was very low. Nothing but thermite could have caused the two buildings (and Building 7) to collapse. The attacks at Shanksville and the Pentagon were missiles – couldn't have been anything else. Even Fox News had been at Shanksville before any other media, and they recorded a piece that described – and showed – the aftermath, which couldn't possibly have been caused by a plane. The article was swiftly removed after one broadcast, but too late; it has been preserved on youtube. Not only did our highest officials fully participate in 9/11, they enlarged on it, then controlled the task force which concluded that the unalterable laws of Thermodynamics had somehow not applied on that day, allowing steel girders to melt at 1000 degrees F below what it would normally take.
Bush talked to a group of people, and the video is on youtube, where he boasted about the first plane that hit the first tower, saying the guy had to be a lousy pilot. He, being a pilot himself, knew this was so. He claimed he saw the video of that first plane on a TV in the school where he was about to read books with little kids. Before he entered the classroom. Nice story, but impossible, since that video of the first strike was not shown on ANY media until the next day. And when Mr. Card came in and whispered the news about the second tower in his ear, Bush's eyes were those of a man saying, "I've done it now. Can't go back. I may fry in hell for this." Did he pack cheeks out of there, in case some terrorists were going to bomb the school to kill him? No. He kept reading. Did his people hustle him into his plane? No. Is that how a rational person reacts? Is THAT how the Secret Service protects the POTUS? One who has the duty to be available when there's such a major catastrophe? His failure to get out of there after hearing of the second strike – the one which made the whole affair an act of terrorism – was callous in the extreme toward those children.
I'm not into conspiracy theories, but I AM into facts, and there is an abundance of facts that say 9/11 was NOT what the government said it was. Nothing is going to make me overlook the Laws of Thermodynamics, or any of the HARD evidence that proves our government was involved in 9/11 up to their earlobes. They had the means, the opportunity, and a huge motive: they wanted war. And we let them have it.
There isn't going to be an investigation of what happened to the people who, supposedly, died in the crashes at Shanksville, the Pentagon and the second plane that hit the WTC. But the people did DIE. Since they didn't die in those attacks (couldn't have), then how DID they die? Lined up along a wall and mowed down? It's the only way it could have been pulled off. Failing to try the Bush administration people is also failing to investigate how those many people, who were said to be on those 3 planes, really did die. And at whose hand?
There can't be many demolition companies in America, especially those with enough expertise to attempt such a grand-scale demolition as the twin towers. Yet it was done, and came off perfectly (from a demolition standpoint). Engineers and Architects, as well as demolition experts, especially in other countries, have said that 9/11 was an act of demolition, no doubt of it. Why should it be hard to figure out which demolition company was most likely to have been chosen to bring down the towers and Building 7?
It wouldn't be hard, that's the point. It's not being investigated at ALL, and very likely cooperating with such an investigation would be signing one's own death warrant. The people who "augmented" 9/11 didn't hesitate to kill thousands of people; putting a contract out on a snitch in the demolition field would be a large – deterrent.
There's no way to avoid knowing that our own government committed MOST of 9/11, but our population is in profound denial about it. One of our OWN presidents would "never do something like that." Until they did. Denial may be comfy, but it allows those same people to think they might be able to pull off a sequel, if they feel the need of one. Which, sooner or later, they WILL do.
Without any investigation into our own government and leaders during 9/11, we very likely still have many people in government, including in Congress, who participated one way or another in that massacre. And we'll never know which ones they might be.
The 9/11 report was so riddled with impossible conclusions that it is more an admission of the guilt of the Bush administration than any kind of genuine explanation to the public. We're supposed to believe that many impossible things actually happened that day. And the public at large is so vastly ignorant that they don't see the impossibilities. If some do, they (most of them) still don't WANT to know them. Any false report will do, as long as they don't have to face the true – and unspeakably horrible – reality. So we hide in denial. It'll cost us, sooner or later. But when a redux of 9/11 happens, and the fault again lies with the ultra-right wing neocons, we'll probably play ostrich yet again.
If that isn't enough to yank you out of your mental torpor, it should. How, exactly, can another in-depth investigation do any harm? Since the first one was so rich in basic scientific error, it means that we really do NOT have any report on 9/11 at ALL.
But don't lay all the blame on Bush. He's feebleminded, and we had better have figured THAT out by now. The most guilt lies in Cheney, who was our president-in-fact for those eight miserable years. Him, and a gaggle of other neocons, who are all still hanging out in D.C. today.
9/11: your tax dollars at work?
you are not a conspiracy believer????????? You obviously are a nut job, though, with this ridiculous rant !!!!
I related facts, as best I could. You have declared that I am a nut-job and a "conspiracy believer." I gather that, BECAUSE YOU said so, people must conclude that it IS so. Why didn't you back up your accusations with something of substance? Where is YOUR evidence of what you said to me? Show me, pal. Do you think making a derogatory statement should be enough to convince other people? It does, for the feebleminded, but not ALL Americans are feebleminded.
There are many conspiracy theories, from Elvis to JFK, and beyond. You have lumped them all together. Therefore, to you, if some (or most) of them are fallacious, they must ALL be fallacious, right? Labels like that are popular with linear thinkers.
It was the neocons' biggest mistake to bring down the towers. That was the thing which began to look like a can of worms. Those towers were built SPECIFICALLY to be able to withstand a crash of a major jetliner. They may have burned a lot, but the structures would still stand. Scientists, engineers and architects the world over know that no heat generated by jet fuel could have brought the towers down. The fact that they did collapse, and so very very tidily, is proof that it was a very professional demolition job. After that, more questions were raised, until there is now a large body of HARD evidence. What nobody has, however, are indictments. Before the attacks occurred, both towers were subjected to "maintenance" that required that the people who'd be in those towers had to be gone for several days. That is when the charges were placed on the girders. One video shows a huge girder, with men standing by it – the girder had been sliced, like a hot knife through butter, and at a perfect 45-degre angle, the kind used by demolition experts. Jet fuel couldn't possibly have done that, nor could the collapse itself. That girder had been SLICED. By thermite, the only thing that ever could slice a steel girder. Thermite doesn't grow on girders like mushrooms. It has to be placed, and in a very special way in order for the demolition to come off perfectly, where the building falls down into its own footprint. Three buildings did that on 9/11, the towers and Building 7. If you're a believer, the impossible happened. For nonbelievers, the buildings were professionally demolished.
No, I don't buy into any and all conspiracy theories, but about 9/11, there's more than guesswork and theorizing. There is HARD EVIDENCE. In order to meet YOUR "standards," I guess I must overlook little things like the temperature at which steel girders will soften or melt. I must overlook the fact that jet fuel, at its worst, burns at 1000F LESS than is required to melt steel girders, and I must accept the 9/11 Commission's report that said they DID melt at those lower temperatures. That same temperature of burning jet fuel also means that airplanes do not "vaporize" as the 9/11 report claimed. They can't. In all of history, not one plane crash caused the aircraft to "vaporize," but that little detail didn't concern the report's writers – or you, so it seems. So to be politically correct, I must believe that the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics went "on hold" that day. Either that, or I must believe the 9/11 Report was false and intentionally misleading. I must also overlook the fact that there were a number of samples of thermite found near and in the ruins of the towers. They can't be real, right? Close the book.
To satisfy YOU, I must believe that an intact, undamaged passport of one of the hijackers was "found" on the ground near one of the towers. I must believe that a 16' diameter circular hole in the Pentagon had actually been made by a commercial jetliner, one which was capable of maneuvers that even military jets could not make, but which a missile CAN. I've SEEN the hole in a video very shortly after the attack. The hole later collapsed, and was larger after that, but even THAT wasn't big enough to let a jetliner through it. The windows on either side of the hole were literally undamaged. So am I to believe the wings "vaporized" before the impact?
On this subject, the "believers" are more on the side of the 9/11 Report than on the side of reality and science. It is you who are "believing" that, somehow, the impossible WAS possible on 9/11. I'm content to stick to science and evidence, even if I find the conclusions terrifying.
But at least you have a lot of company. Most Americans refuse to contemplate that their own president and his administration would consciously participate in a horrific attack like that. So they just...close the book.
Until a decision is made to conduct a real investigation, we can never hope to put any of the perps on trial.
The neocons won. They knew the American people would plunge headlong into denial. To do otherwise would require them to accept that our own government really might have had a big hand in the party they threw for us on 9/11. Having gotten away with it, we can be sure they'll employ similar tactics down the road. Nor will we EVER know how the people on those 3 planes that supposedly were killed in the attacks, really died.
Write a fallacious report. Close the book. It's all over with. Right? Whew.
Except that what goes around comes around. The phrase is often used to imply that a good deed can be returned in kind, often surprisingly. But it can also apply to bad deeds. We need only wait.
So what label are you going to slap on me now? Whatever you choose to do, if you can't back it up with facts and evidence, it's just you, being a nut-job by choice, and ranting. I don't rant. I analyze information to the best of my ability, and science is, to me, more significant than just believing what I'm told. Science contradicts the 9/11 Report many times. Given the choice, I'd be stupid to claim the report was more true than the science.
OMG what an accurate dissertation from HB. Thanks for this, and I am NOT kidding or anything. Well written; I'd like to contact you so we can talk more directly about what you have written here. As a person who writes scenarios for combat and such, I just have one question. The Airlines. We all know the videos were created to show planes hitting the towers and no actual video of the actual events exist; all the CNN and broadcasting of the planes hitting the towers are faked computer images (the penetration of the towers is the fault; planes would not penetrate so far and disappear into a building built to withstand impact; esp. when they strike the building at an ANGLE). What I am saying here is that, on topic, in order to prosecute these people and yes they all should be put in prison, what about the Airlines themselves? If the passengers were all taken off the planes and murdered, and the cell phone calls from the plane (not possible by the way) were indeed faked, what are we really seeing here? What is the actual scenario? Forget the conspiracy theory this isn't a theory anymore. How on earth did the Airlines get, be, whatever, involved? I have worked at United and seen the crisis room; I've seen the crisis room in the bowels of Motorola too. How the heck was this entire thing done with the consent of places like CNN other news organizations (they had to, they didn't question where the videos came from that they broadcast) and how can we ever prosecute those who killed witnesses? Remember, False Flag operations are real. Research Pearl Harbor and you'll see. So what though eh? Even if we did a war game using historic miniatures will we actually be able to see what actually happened? Will the analysis shed light on what happened behind the scenes, who proposed the whole operation? Bush was a puppet, everyone knows now. But what of the next thing these people do to us? Where will they strike next.
Really you seriously do need some mental help. Too many drugs in your younger days has made you a paranoid mess or I suppose maybe you were born that way. I really think you should investigate your own mental issues before you hurt someone.
So that is how you've been told to treat people who don't buy into the 9/11 Report? I did too many drugs in my younger days, or was possibly born paranoid? Egad, that's pitiful.
Prove it, then. Because I never did drugs, not EVER. And I was born with a mind capable of learning how to be analytical, and had the good fortune to have a father who helped me develop that ability. He was a scientist, a renowned one in his field, and he wanted me to learn HOW to think. Most people raise kids telling them WHAT to think. I couldn't have had a better father. To him, what was most important was for me to have a way to come as close as humanly possible to the genuine REALITIES of things. That required having the emotional stamina to accept even the most horrifying of conclusions. I'm not capable of going into denial.
If science and all the hard evidence supported the 9/11 Report, I'd have never reached my present opinion of it. I went where the evidence led.
You may think I WANTED to conclude that the 9/11 Report was filled with lies. That's not so. I was appalled to realize how riddled it was with impossibilities. The 9/11 Commission had an ample budget to bring in the top experts in any field. Yet SOMEHOW they were able to conclude that the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics did not apply on 9/11? It seems they must have "bought" the experts they used, because no real scientist would ever claim that steel girders can melt at 1000F less than science tells us. Nor would they claim that an airplane can "vaporize" in a crash, when the science says that such a thing is impossible. Whoever their experts were, they supported the lies. We may never know what was done to enable them to lie.
By lying, and encouraging the public's denial, there are consequences.
One is that the demolition team that fully participated in mass murder will walk free, able to do it again, if need be. What could have made them willing to plant thermite charges in both WTC towers? Fanaticism? Money? Something did, and we can't know unless another investigation – a REAL one this time – is undertaken.
Another is that hundreds of people DIED – supposedly in those airliners that weren't. Therefore, how they really DID die is not being pursued at all. By choosing to go into denial, most Americans are also choosing to ignore hundreds of murders. I wouldn't want to be in a position like that. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
Another is that we'll never know who, among our politicians, were involved in the conspiracy, other than those who are known to be neocons. That doesn't mean all were involved. We don't know. We CAN'T know without conducting a real investigation. As time goes by, that's harder and harder to do. The neocons know fully how to appreciate THAT.
ALL the people who participated in 9/11 are mass murderers, and ALL have been able to walk free. Some are still among our lawmakers and people still working in government. Maybe it doesn't disturb you, but it really bothers me not to know which ones they are. We're still trusting some of the mass murderers to represent the American people. Who, among those who represent us and write laws for us, are mass murderers from 9/11? That scares me silly.
I guess the only thing the American people (most of them) can accept is that the whole 9/11 scenario was done by rabid Muslims. It is therefore unthinkable that ANY American could have had a hand in it.
Except that they did. Muslims couldn't have sneaked into the towers, getting the usual people out for several days, in order to plant the charges. But Americans could. Muslims couldn't have arranged to have two missiles fly, one at Shanksville and one at the Pentagon. Nor could Muslims have devised an unmanned drone plane that superficially looked like a commercial airliner, and fly it into the second tower. Nor could the fires in Building 7 have brought it down, and no Muslims could possibly have had a hand in its collapse. But Americans could. Muslims couldn't have arranged to have virtually every fighter jet on the East coast far away (on "maneuvers") on that particular day.
While I by no means would underestimate the threat Islam poses to the world, it isn't practical or honest to lay 100% of the blame for 9/11 on them, when they couldn't possibly have done it all. They must have been as startled as we were that the ONE plane which did strike a tower was followed by a whole lot more attacks that weren't in their own plans at ALL. You can be sure they liked it, though. Though bin Laden rejoiced, too, there is a lot of room for doubt that HE had planned and organized even one plane that hit the first tower. Maybe, maybe not, but he couldn't possibly have planned the other 3 strikes, at the second tower, the Pentagon and Shanksville. THOSE weren't in the plan (couldn't have been), but they happened anyway, to their amazed delight.
9/11 was the prelude to the war the neocons wanted with Iraq. To Bush, it was doing daddy one better, and also helping insure that Armageddon would occur with an intact Israel existing (as it MUST in order for Revelations to play out as the bible stated). It was also Bush's "testosterone war," as the "Mission Accomplished" photo showed. The only thing lacking was his wife, hanging onto his shoulder, with a text bubble above saying, "My HERO!"
The neocons have a plan to take over the world, by taking over America, first. To make the war they wanted, they needed a "galvanizing" event, and their own writings referred to "something like Pearl Harbor." THAT would unify the population to make war. Though they lied like rugs, they DID get their war, didn't they? And war is what lines the pockets of the war industry, against whom Eisenhower had warned us all, many years ago. He was entirely correct. Our war industries want all international disagreements to descend into war, even if we have to do it "pre-emptively." To them, "war is peace" makes sense. Many Americans still want us to launch wars – just read what they write in comment fields online. "Nuke 'em!" "Turn Tehran into a parking lot!" And more. The neocons will find a lot of supporters. You may be sure of that.
9/11 isn't over. It's still going on.
Who will try NATO when the Internation Court if run by the NATO pact. There is great injustice when it comes to western governments and their leaders who think they have a green light to conduct crimes against humanity.
Rolls eyes. No wonder my comment was removed. I stated that the SITTING pres be charged. On ONN too!
Judiciary is above all hence all can be prosecuted no matter head of state or a citizen of the very state but there is a difference these are not common people they are important and high profile people its bad for a country if every other person get up from sleep and sue the president 7 days a week much like diplomats they must have a seperate way to jurisdiction and accountability and once proved otherwise must be punishable on par lets wish for a better socitiey and better governing and currupt free bodies...
So, when are we going to drag George W Bush out of his comfy slumber and hold him accountable for an invasion based on false accusations of WMD's, and such? Make an example out of him. Show the world that the US is accountable for its actions as well. I for one, am a patriot. And living abroad, I get berated about Bush all the time and hypocracy of the US government. We as a people were misrepresented by Bush, and we shouldn't continue to be questioned about our convictions and justice.
politicians are the same all over the world...just get a little more involved in the country where YOU live and discover that the only reason they dog YOU is because their own leaders are equally embarrassing...or more so. YOU don't have to answer to THEM for everything america does...the people who trouble you just want to cut YOU down to size...and they found a way to do it...try to make YOU embarassed to be an american. but if you like to play their stupid game, why not earnestly seek their acceptance by becoming a citizen of THEIR crapped up country?
Unfortunately, until those responsible for war crimes such as the war in Iraq or the drone strikes in Pakistan have been prosecuted by the ICC, The Hague will remain a farce and justice will stay absent.
These cases, though, illustrate the hypocrisy by which western nations rule the world: as long as _we_ break international law, illegally invade nations, kill civillians and torture people, it's OK (or at least a necessary evil) – but whenever _someone_else_ dares to do the same, we cry for the ICC.
First things, first. Twilight for crimes against humanity! And then yes, please investigate western world leaders for what they have done and never had too claim responsibility for. But if not, Ill be running for office because getting away with murder should never be forgotten
western world leaders are already responsible for crimes against humanity – and at a much larger scale than some of those tried by the ICC. So they should be among the first ones to be tried.
Everything else just reveals the hypocrisy and injustice our world has come to accept as "normal".
Put the traitors in JAIL. If anyone conspired to kill One person, they would go to jail. How about over 100,000 lives lost? All because of the their shark frenzy greed to build weapons to put money in the corporation's pockets. They never wanted peace because the gluttons in America realize they will have to share more finite resources. They are nothing more than dishonorable murderers. What will they say to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin when THEY MEET THEM ...
Like i have said, until Theodor Meron's court is bold enough to go after those past leaders of the West, Europe and Asia. The ICC ceases to be a Success in my sight. until the West and Europe are called to account for their crimes in the slave trade against the continent of Africa, where millions of Africans died and Africa was left impoverished, the ICC remains a court without true justice. I wonder why the ICC is only skilled in going after the weak Africans and a part of Europe for the same crimes their counterparts in the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russian, Canada etc, are guilty of...although theirs are justified crimes against humanity around the world. This court, what an effective political tool of dominance has it become in a world that speaks its own language of democracy.
i don't completely dismiss a liberal perspective on things, but liberals whine so much about violence, yet they are the ones who fund armed drug lords by their indulgence in recreational drug use. they claim the violence would disappear if pot were made legal, but i wonder why it would be too much to ask liberals to simply boycott pot instead; the same way they boycott fabric, fur, tuna fish or chick-fil-a or whatever else is fashionable to boycott. similarly, if america is such a monster, then ALL POT SMOKING AMERICANS need to adjust their lifestyles, and stop being self-centered hedonists that have as much guilty blood on their hands as their elected officials do.
poor judge theodor meron. with such a specialized line of work he will eventually become a target or a tyrant.
