If the West doesn’t arm the Free Syrian Army, extremist groups will take hold of the war-torn country. That’s the assessment of Syrian opposition leader Ghassan Hitto, who in past weeks, went from being a Texas-based I.T. executive to prime minister of the Syrian National Coalition, Syria’s government in exile.
“Do we wait until thousands and thousands more of Hezbollah fighters continue to pour into Syria? Do we wait for more Iranian soldiers and Iranian influence in the region?” Hitto said to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.
Hitto is a Syrian-American who's just been appointed the first interim prime minister of the Syrian opposition. He has temporary headquarters in Istanbul, but told Amanpour he'll soon name his government and move into Syria.

The Obama administration has said it is reluctant to arm the rebels because, it says, it doesn’t want arms falling into the hands of extremists.
“Waiting for this red line and waiting for another red line and another line of a different color is just waiting too long,” Hitto said. “The interim government is the alternative – the solution to bring order into Syria.”
The Assad regime and its brutality has allowed foreign elements to intervene inside Syria, according to Hitto – saying this paved the way for Israeli airstrikes in the past week.
But how does the opposition prevent a ‘free Syria’ from becoming a headquarters for al Qaeda?
“The Syrian people are known for being moderate. They're known for rejecting any type of foreign ideology, any type of ideology that enforces its ideas on the people,” Hitto said. “They are ready to go back and carry on with their normal lives.”
Hitto does not believe the time he has spent living in America will make him appear as foreigner.
“First and foremost, I stay away from all the political issues. And I present myself as a technocrat, as one who's going to put a government together, that has a government together that's ready to serve the people,” he said. “People are driven by their needs. And when we focus on their needs and we focus on what they want, they go along with that.”

The purpose is to create a state of chaos in Syria, but not to establish a representative government. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria are perfect the way they are for US and Israel's interest. A few dismantled governments that will not pose a threat to Israel. I just wish the lapdog media would stop portraying it as something else.
Which conspiracy theory website did you read that on, nutjob?
Ah, the old stand-by insult of a fool who believes he can keep a lid on the truth. You may think that we live in a time where you can label anything you disagree with as "conspiracy theory" and have other people believe your assessment to be accurate... but we don't. We live in a time where people are rapidly discovering that things that were previously believed to be "conspiracy theory" is in fact truth.
People like you only seek to discourage critical thinkers in the general public to ensure that the government does not have to answer for it's horrendous actions. The more you try to cover up the truth the more people will oppose your actions.
Your mother's ass.
Typical Jewish response.
Typical Muslim response.
It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that this is a proxy war...USA/Israel/FSA(Wahabist Al-Qaeda Terrorists) vs. The Syrian People, Hizbullah, Iran, China, and Russia. We should not be involved with arming Terrorist Rebels or fighting a proxy war.
I'm just curios to know why US (Zimmerman) told Alija Izetbegovic to withdraw his signature from Lisbon Agreement (Carrington agreement) in 1992 before Bosnian conflict started ?? Ok I know Milosevic was crazy and mentally ill guy which I'm sure Zimmerman knew about, So then why not going directly to overthrow one guy Milosevic then instead letting the war started in Bosnia ?? And now EU and US wwould need to pay billions to bring back Bosnia,Croatia,Serbia into EU ? Whatta a stupid un-intellectual war was that.
You are absolutely correct. Read Confessions of and Economic Hit Man and The Secret History of the American Empire. It is about destroying sovereign nations, making all the people of the world economic slaves and owning all things of real wealth. Also, read Alan Greenspan's essay Gold and Economic Freedom. Hussein was going to sell oil for gold, Omar was going to have a single gold based currency for Africa and sell African commodities for gold, and Afghanistan has an estimated three trillion dollars in natural resources.
Not enough gold in the world to sustain an economy such as China and the US.
When your talking 6 trillion a year GDP, and there's only 1 trillion worth of gold on earth, what are you going to do?
That's why civilized societies ALWAYS adopt a paper currency. Go take a basic economic class at your local community college and you'll understand.
an economics degree from florida international university results in this kind of post . wherever you studied, sue for a refund of your tuition! Coo Coo!!
ur comment is very consistent with ur anti Semitic views, that Jews are always at fault for everything.
And your comments are in line with a Israeli first-er that they can do no wrong. The whole world knows of the Imperial works of the United States and its henchman Israel, the anti semiotic charge used to shut people up but it doesn't anymore. There are plenty of Jews who agree with the assertion that State of Israel is a racist pariah apartheid ad it is doing the bidding of its Imperial criminals in Washington. You can keep your head in the sand and ignore history as late as a few years ago. The whole world knows that anytime US is supporting anything it is because of corporate greed. You are the boy who cried wolf..get lost! No more innocent lives for the sake Israel! No more American lives soldiers death for the sake of Israel!
Isn't it fair to assume the worst of all political organizations, and be pleasantly surprised when you are wrong? America isn't perfect, and in money cases, oil and greed motivate those at the head of the government to make their decisions. The fact is, for all the America haters, their governments are no better. Historically, America has a few things going for it. It has been better to its people than most countries, and like it or not, better to most other countries than the historical norm. I won't say their aren't elitist groups that want to control the rest of the world through economics, but America isn't the only one that has them.
The US didn't create the idea of Israel, they didn't promote it, they didn't implement it. European interests in the UN did it all. How on earth does that make Israel the US's "lapdog"? Are all allies of the US "lapdogs" in your little mind? That's your rationale? You're not even making sense.
jews are not to be confused with zionists. The israeli government is a zionist organization, one that doesn't care about human rights and believes it can do w/e the hell it wants. Honestly it's quite amusing watching what goes on at their whim. Jews do not believe in that, we believe in the 10 commandments of god and not much else. It's really quite simple. Not all zionists are jews and not all jews are zionists. Just be careful of the ashkanazi.
Wow, take the guns out of the hands of Americans and give guns to Islamic militants and poorly organized rebels who will only use the guns in the years to come to fight us and probably incite terrorism. We have no idea what is really going on in Syria yet we think we should arm them... Sounds like common sense legislation.
Everyone's fault but the Arabs who are actually pulling the triggers? What a cliche.
But really, really sneaky people are making them pull the triggers. The Muslims have no control. They are puppets of at least fifteen different conspiracies. By the way, this is called humor-
well, lots of media attention for requests for arms and aid, but in reality, out of a population of several million the amount of destruction and number of deaths is on a low scale, its more theatrics for more aid so more baby factories can be maintained so baby production of more extremists can continue, probably best to pull all money and aid to those areas, populations have exploded there in the last 20 years while we work in north america and then send our taxes to those places who procreate everyday all day, hence the 10-15 kids per woman
This is called the proletariat. A large family is the only insurance of the poor.
Those kids will be soon killing each other for scraps. Crazy planet.
Coo Coo! .........oooooooooo a "critical thinker" ................a comic book theorist!..ooooooooo a "conspiracy"!! LOL
The declarations of the Swiss UN prosecutor yesterday May, 5th. regarding the rebels use of the Sarin gas were quite conclusive. This raises a serious question about who is giving the Sarin gas to the rebels? We also know that AlQaeda and various other extremist groups have the upper hand among the Rebels. I am surprised that such a serious issues isn't explored by the US media.
Paranoia must be interesting: never a dull moment.
I feel the U.S should inetevene
Oh, HELL no! Give them some support, but no way do we send forces there or make any airstrikes whatsoever. When religious extremists take control later this year, the last thing we need is for them to have the slightest excuse...
Then how do you propose to make sure that the chemical weapons and missile stockpile don't end up in the hands of Al Qaeda? You know exactly what they would do with them if they got them.
We invaded Iraq to get them and they moved them to Syria (per the Iraqi general Georges Sada), we invade Syria to get them and they move them to...Iran? There's such a big buildup to invasion thanks to the UN and "coalition building" that there's plenty of time to shuffle things around.
Easy to say from your armchair.... Syria's civil war isn't worth the blood of a single US soldier.
USA can & will intervene. Liberty is Strong. Human rights are fundamental. The US & Isreal & all people who have formed a goverment for the people and by the People can & will Stop IRAN in their tracks.
What liberty? It'll be worse than Egypt and Libya. They started beheading people with religious issues in libya and doing random virginity checks in egypt. The interim syrian government is code for muslim brotherhood.
The USA can & will intervene. Liberty is Strong. All governments formed by the people for the people will survive against dogmatic individuals like Assad and the theocratic government of IRAN. "Give a lever and fulcrum and I can move the Earth." Don't forget it either.
Like the fundamental Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the US helped install? Or the Islamic fundamentalists in Libya, Tunisia and so on, the US helped install?
This current regime in the US isn't for the people.
That is what the UN is for!
US people to Syrian opposition: Stop involving us in your conflict. We know you'll turn on us the second you rise to power regardless of our support.
Exactly! We'll just end up with another Afghanistan. We helped them out against the Soviets, and how did they repay us? They blew up the World Trade Center and they've been fighting us ever since, using guns and missiles with "Made in the USA" proudly painted on the side.
Actually, the Afghans were mostly armed with WWII British .303 rifles and black market Eastern European 50 cals and RPG's. Your "made in USA" spiel made for nice theater, but without factual support, that's all it is, amateur hour.
-In Response to Sleestack, While I'm not entirely disagreeing with you, the fact that America EVENTUALLY provided contemporary state of the art, Anti-Air weaponry including Stingers to the Mujahdeen (read different than the Taliban and AlQeda) brought about the inevitable Soviet withdraw a little quicker once their helos started falling from the sky. So we did provide weapons on a limited scale.
Us to Israehell : Send your OWN children to war.
LOL, they always have! Kicked a lot if ass in the process, too. They're quite ferocious on their own, so we don't "send our children" to fight their wars. That's just silly.
intelligent people to "Paul": half wits like you should avoid posting and revealing their prejudices and lack of "critical thought".
Paul Jacob, wahahahaha...typical muslim trying to have a white protestant sounding name. Go do some virginity checks or a few beheadings or rape victims, stop bothering us with your ridiculous opinions.
Three words: Steel cage match. The only things the US will provide are the octagon and the popcorn.
Syrian opposition are the extremists serving the agenda of the international bankers.
and you would think the average idiot viewer of CNN could get a clue!!
Can the prime minister guarantee the arms won't fall in the hands of Islamic extremists?
Yes. He will give them to "freedom fighters" instead. lol.
One man's freedom fighter ...
It doesn't matter who is in charge, extremism has already invaded the entire Middle East and will continue to spread thanks to Saudi Arabia. They have been funding Wahhabi schools for decades that brainwash Muslim youth into believing a radical form of Islam in which the West and Israel are the ultimate enemies. The Saudi royal family has used religious fanatics ever since they founded their nation on the swords of ultra-conservative zealots.
Somebody get this man a job at The State Department.
"If the West doesn’t arm the Free Syrian Army, extremist groups will take hold of the war-torn country" ....Do they want conventional or more chemical weapons so they can try to establish another red line for obama?
"Arm us, not the extremists."
Easier said than done. How are we supposed to tell the difference?
Check their library cards.
Easy. The ones pointing their muzzles toward Damascus are the Rebels. Of course, once Assad is gone all bets are off, so you may have a good point after all!
Okay sleestack, youre making some sense but I gotta ask, are you one of these lizard hybrid conspiracy guys? I mean...with a name like sleestack (yes I remember land of the lost).
Mr Hitto, you made no mention of the Al-Qaeda allegiances your opposition group has made. You talk of hezbollah and iran, yet Al-Qaeda has been more of a threat to the US (foreign and domestic). Tell us: after you get your weapons, will you just simply kick out the Al-Qaeda inspired "Al-nusra Front", the one group who has been making significant progress against the Syrian Government? The fact you are playing both sides shows that you and your Mickey-mouse government cannot be trusted. We both know that US intervention is not going to be in best interest of Syria, just look at Iraq and the state it's in, and how the Iraqi's blame the US for their misery. Is Syria going to blame the US after they get help from the US? I am surprised CNN has even reported this article in your favor. Then again, it's CNN.
You just nailed it!
They'll also blame the US for their misery if we DON'T intervene.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I want a free rifle too. Obama are you listening?
We had some 750,000 perfectly good M14s before Klinton got his hands on them and melted them all. The Syrian opposition would LOVE to have a bunch of .308 battle rifles right about now, I'm sure. Sure beats AKs. Too bad we no longer have them to offer.
Sorry, but very little beats an AK. Try putting a bayonet on any american battle rifle and you get a broken gun first time you have to use it. AK out shoots but is designed around eliminating the enemy, not threat elimination like the m4.
It seems as though either way we will eventually have to put troops on the ground in Syria to ensure that all that has already been invested isn't put into jeopardy. If we are going to invest further, would it not be best to take control early on to stop the number of Syrian soldiers from growing considerably as well as prevent an extremist group from having an opportunity to take control? My concern is spreading ourselves too thin with North Korea already in its current state of possibly being bold enough to actually strike American soil. With trying to control a region that has never in history been successfully controlled, Iran stating that it will assist Syria in their war after Israel's last strike made, North Korea potentially lauching a long range nuclear missle aimed at US soil, and all that combined with a current Commander in Chief who is hesitating to take control at what is a growing problem with enemy forces only to increase in numbers if not combine forces with another nation, it is only logical that we very well could be creating a very serious situation for ourselves. Get control of one of these threats now so it doesn't create a situation of dealing with everything at once.
i wonder if this guy has any real legitimacy amongst the people doing the fighting
"If the West doesn’t arm the Free Syrian Army, extremist groups will take hold of the war-torn country." why is it the west's problem. what happened to all their arab brothers.
So after Assad is gone why can't you go after the extremists and al queda??.
I feel very pitty for Israel for what thy did 2 Syria thy are definately going 2 suffer the same fate from Iran "crushing response"
Let's hope the SARS virus and the H1N9 bird virus spread fast through tel aviv. There are 2 confirmed deaths so far ; let's hope that number grows exponentially .
WAHA!!! Yeah we've seen their crushing response. They manage to kill a few kindergarden kids with random miissile launches. Real heros. If that's islam then you and it can both kiss my hairy white butt
we should think twice before we act.every body want to be a chief.later they will turn against us.let them kill them self
don't provide arms to any Syrians; instead crush the main destabilizer in the region, Iran.
Good plan in theory, but to actually do such a thing would be suicide. The whole region would go bat s%&# crazy! It would be decades before anyone could step in there and accomplish anything.
really tough situation in Syria...for all involved....?????????????????????????
That would be Israel, actually.
Bashar al Assad will drive out these terrorists and allow a free Syria. Our great friends from Iran and Hezbollah will help Bashar drive out the terrorists.
Right now you can't see farther then your nose- Syria is a slave to Iran, China indirectly, Russia is protecting her own interest when it comes to Syria- this might make Syria at the least a servant to Russia..... there is no freedom in Syria as of today..
I don't know how you can believe that Syria is a "slave to China indirectly". From what I see on Wikipedia, Syria purchases a mere $2 billion worth of goods from China each year. The USA purchases $400 billion per year. Syria is a much smaller and poorer country than the US, but even so, the idea that Syria is a slave to China in any way, direct or indirect, seems extremely far fetched.
Because that is how China treats all of its "allies".
USA in same bed with alkaida....buahahahahhahhahaha, true face of america.
Of the current Administration, surely. The Obama regime has bent the knee to Sunni Islam, basically. They help destabilize any country that is not ruled by Sunni, basically. Syria now, Lebanon tomorrow. Or perhaps Iran.
Anything that helps Israel, and its lap-dogs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
McCain is pushing harder to ally with Al Qaeda than Obama is, just FYI. And you may remember that McCain was close to being President!
The Syrian "opposition" is not run by "freedom fighters". It is run by an extreme Muslim groups. The Muslim Brotherhood is a radical group responsible for terrorism, and we're going to arm these people?
Never cease to amaze me,how people can sell out their country have it destroyed by outsiders, who have no interest in their well being.
Since when Western nations gave a damn about Arabs killing one another.
In the last 20 years, apparently, because we need their oil. If they're killing eachother, they also tend to blow up the oil infrastructure, and thus destabilizes the entire world economy as the price of oil increases.
THAT is why the west cares.
Hitto, as a Syrian, I spit on your face and hope you burn in hell.
do you have a solution??? can you see the magnitude of the problem here.- Syria is the key to human freedom and prosperity, is that is why Iran and china, Russia don't want to let go of it.
There will be no place you in Syria, except the end of a rope.
Maybe this is a better idea. US send some weapons to the rebels, the rebels pushed back the government, which will forced Iran and Hezbollah to intervene and send their men to defend Assad.
After Iran enters the Syrian theater, make all Saudi clerics to make a fatwa that all Sunnis must defend their brothers against Shiite invasion . This will make lots of radical groups and nutjobs from all over the world to pour into Syria . And all hell break loose in Middle East and I'll be sitting in my space ship eating popcorn watching the news in my brand new 60" Ultra HD LED TV.
I hope some government agent read this.
To heck with Syria... the cost of ammo is so high in America and hard to find... I wish Russia would ship cargo after cargo of ammunition to us here dirt cheap!
If we are damn if we do and damn if we don't then we must do something then deal with the consequences or after affects later...the problem is how high is the price tag?????????????????
the doing nothing sound just as good as doing something...I am lost...?????
I don't know. Can't some other country send their help instead of the USA? I think its time some other country start helping some of the needy countries out.
"Arm us, not the extremists".
Uh.. NO! Been there done that.Time's up. Billions invested covert weaponry ect. already.Country's nearly destroyed.
Syrian Population Hates You .Get Out Now.The people of Syria will Vote 2014/Assad now more than Ever as a war Hero!
Wait a minute, does nobody remember that the Syrian Rebels pledge allegiance to Al Qaeda? The US arms the opposition then gets the leverage to wage war when they use the chemicals we gave them. This is all too familiar, but that phrase, history repeats itself, was created for a reason.
Alquedy will come after Iran after gaining Syria- ?????????????but after is done with Iran then what?????China??? I doubt so...Russia I doub it so????but then again i have no info on this area...
if the stremism are armed who is next after syria???? Iran, halballah??? Iraq??? is this why they are so willing to defend Syria????? cause they are next one by one????
To IRAN: Remember Battle of Bastogne? Your theocratic government will over extend its army into obliv·i·on in Syrian. I dare you. No I triple dare you. Idiots.
Doesn't want arm rebels to avoid arming extremists, yet it seems like the extremists are already better armed than the rebels.
Though the question is which rebels? Syria has become something akin to the Spanish civil war, combatants that have no real connection with Syria but intervene for personal goals. I wonder how many Syrian rebels are actually rebelling to rid of Assad and restore democracy(probably few, seeing that the biggest factions are extremist and mostly from outside of Syria)
A Syrian from Texas....this should be interesting. Is it another budding American appointed Dictator ready to sell out Syria to American Business Interests? Hopefully not.
Give them arms? I wonder what Bin Ladin and his associates said when they were being armed during the Afgan war. Here we go again. And GOP lawmakers can't wait to do just that. When will they ever learn?
When ideology, not logic, lead the way this type of BS happens.
Get a grip the idea is being floated by Sen Menendez, that's with a 'D" after his name and not a GOPer
Everyone is extremist in Syria. I am for weapon assistance with the purpose to keep all armed factions busy of against each other so that they won't have time and energy to take on the free world. But I doubt European and American (OB administration specifically) are that smart. So in general, I am against US involvement in Syria. Period.
Not a word from CNN about this week's Bengahzi hearings – but its all over Fox News that Hillary organized the cover up.
not just CNN but all the MSM. Benghazi never happened, repeat until the masses believe it....
Why would you expect anything else? Most Mainstream Media is biased toward a Leftist political position, which puts them on the side (and in the pockets) of the Democrats. They will hardly ever report on anything that points a slant toward that political position or party. The Right in the USA has FoxNews and that's pretty much it, and you all know how mocked that is compared to the Leftist owned propaganda pushing Media like CNN, MSNBC and so on.
Amanpour is a fascist. Whatever comes out of her mouth is to be treated as biased. She can talk about bringing out all the issues on the table and "democratically" discuss them all she wants. The bottom line is that she is not trustworthy at all. Professionally, I think she's the bottom of the trash can, and if you can do the work she does, chances are that she is the bottom of a trash can as a person as well.
This is getting old, why is it that every time a country goes under that country "Expects" help from the U.S. Then when we do help they hate us and if we dont help they will still hate us. I dont get it.
Defer to the U.N. The U.N. was created for this purpose, not solely for civil-wars, but in instances such as Syria, it is SUPPOSED to act.
The U.S. is not the U.N.'s sword and shield... Ever since Desert Shield and Storm, it seems to have been that way. Well, the U.N. needs to rethink it's purpose and it's spreading of crisis workload.
The U.S. needs to sit this one out as we are going to have a black-eye anyway they side.
The lessons of arming/training/assisting the Taliban in the 1980's should be proof-positive of why not to get involved in Syria... NONE in that region can be trusted or be called an ally or friend.
American public: Arm us, not the extremists
Israel garners the support of the U.S. while acting as a rogue state, independent and absolutely careless of the interests of the U.S. I imagine theirs ought to be a false sense of security in their terrorism of neighboring countries. Why in the world would the U.S. rally support around such a country?
the world and israel (pbuh) have common enemy, its radical mohammed (cbuh).
This reminds me of the Iraqi ministers pre-2003 invasion. This guy has absolutely no legitimacy.
let them kill each other. If Syrian fall into extremist, then we have an excuse to bomb them more with taliban favorites, a drone.
if we want to help syrian, let we send them a lot of burger king and mcd kfc. it better for them to throw non halal food than to exchange bullet. everybody scream ilelahwhoichbar.
well, at least now, we can see how well the "superior" Syrian military fare against the more "modern" rebels. HAHAHAHA.
Stay out of Syria and raise the bar on defending Israel. God's law demands it. He blesses those who bless His chosen people. Remove our protection of Israel, and we purposly remove His umbrella of protection for ourselves.
Okay you intellectuals, bring it on.
Thank you so much Christiane for this excellent work. Now it is finally clear what needs to be done in order to have order in Syria (at least it is to me).
So do any of you believe that arming this person or the other will solves thousands of years of conflict, let darwins law sort it out, leave it alone.
Obama and Hagel: "All options are on the table"
"Hi guys, I'm an american citizen from Texas. You better arm me than arming the terrorists like Tsarnaev brothers. But i'm a Syrian Jihadists PM too. Obama knows me very well. "
Does America has dual citizenship treaty with Syria? How this Hitto an american citizen become a PM of the foreign country? For more than 30 years he's been living in USA.
I'm sorry, you can't have men who spent years in the USA going back to their countries of origin and asking to run them – sorry no. especially in texas... oil, oh... what's the matter intelligence agency? can't get any more impoverished ambitious charismatic converts to run them for you? oh, G I wonder why.
Your assumptions show your ignorance. How can we accept OPRAH when she builds a school in Africa and now a group of those girls are living with her while they take the seats of our American students in the halls of higher learning? Let the guy try.
Ghassan Hitto is another Karzai in the making. And Karzai didn't turn out to be of much use either.
You have no proof of that. People who are skeptical should roll up their sleeves and do something!
Why is it all right to watch genocide? ASSad has and his father's regime prior have had 50 plus years to throw a strangle-hold on the Syrian people. The world calmly and with a skeptical eye watches as hundreds of innocent people die every day. U.N. reports show that one in four Syrian children have been physically injured in the conflict, three in four have lost an immediate family member to the murderous ASSad regime, a million and a half Syrians have been forced into refugee tent camps in neighboring countries, at least 4 million Syrians have been displaced, pushed out of their homes and forced to become squatters under trees, in vacated buildings, or under the open sky in their own homeland. WHEN will this become a HUMANITARIAN issue and not a ethno-religious issue? How many slaughtered, maimed, emaciated bodies must there be before the world of humanitarians will do something? As it stands, there is no infrastructure to provide a simply death certificate for the murdered, no recourse for a woman who has been raped by the regime soldier, no system for recovery of real or personal property, no method of delivery for medical supplies or basic food items. Not a single one of you that commented to this post would sit still for a single minute this situation, why is it all right that we sit back and watch the destruction of a whole society in this way!?!?!
Nonsense. They were sending arms via US pathetic proxy Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The US media is looking for annoying war cheerleaders repeaters.
I often hear the argument that if the west did arm the Free Syrian Army, those weapons could end up in the wrong hands, almost funny considering that Syria is already packed with weapons, but at the wrong hands. I feel sorry for the people of Syria that are fighting for deomocracy and their lives even. They got Assad backed up with help from Iran and Hezbollah, Assad also gets a lot of weapons from Russia and Russia are alos helping him with advisers, satellite images and so on. What about Egypt? Why are they so silent?
