Hague: UK has not decided on arms for Syrian opposition

By Mick Krever, CNN

The United Kingdom has not yet decided whether to send weapons to Syria’s opposition forces, Foreign Secretary William Hague told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

“I was absolutely instrumental in getting the EU to lift the arms embargo,” Hague said. “But also said at the time … that we wouldn’t be doing so at this stage.”

Arms, Hague added, are not the only way to aid the opposition.

“We’re sending body armor, we’re sending vehicles that are bullet-proofed, we’re sending communications equipment, water purification equipment, and things of this kind,” Hague said.

In a televised speech on Monday, the Syrian foreign minister said that any weapons that went to Syria’s opposition forces would “technically” be going to al Nusra, an al Qaeda aligned rebel force.

“I ask everyone to go and click on the Facebook page of the Nusra Front and see what they boast about,” Walid Moallem said. “They behead, kill and eat the hearts of their opponents and they publically post these videos online.”

“We must not fall for the propaganda of the Syrian regime,” Hague responded. “Yes, some terrible things have happened, including on both sides. But most of those things have happened at the hands of the regime that has butchered and tortured tens of thousands of its own people.”
