Israel and the Palestinians need “to move fast with genuine commitment, not with P.R. statements,” a top Palestinian politician told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday.
The possibility of direct negotiations now looks more real than it has in years, thanks to the old-fashioned shuttle diplomacy of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
Hanan Ashrawi, a long-time Palestinian peace negotiator and a senior member of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), told Amanpour that they were awaiting an invitation from Kerry.
On Monday, the top Israeli negotiator, Tzipi Livni, told Amanpour that she “deeply” supported negotiations and an end to conflict.
“It's not a favor to the Palestinians nor to the E.U. and not even to the President of the United States,” Livni said. “It is our own interest.”
Past talks have often fallen apart over “preconditions” set by negotiators – among them that Israel freeze settlement building or that the Palestinians be granted a “right of return” to their erstwhile houses now within Israeli territory.
“This term ‘conditions’ has been used constantly to discredit the Palestinians as though we’re doing something wrong,” Ashrawi contended. “When you enter negotiations, you do not enter by relinquishing your people's rights and destroying your credibility with your own people. These are rights that are enshrined in international law.”
Ashrawi said that any future negotiations should be based on the framework that has been built up over decades of talks between the two sides.
“We cannot reinvent the wheel,” she said, “every time a new government comes and wants to negate the agreed-upon basis of negotiations.”
LONG TIME KNOW END LONG WAY -:;TIRED END WITH WOUNDS ALONG THE ROAD CORNERS AFFAIRSES-:;
Someone has to explain to Ms. Ashrawi that one can not come into a car dealership and demand a 2014 Chrysler 300 at a 1948 or even 1967 price simply becausehis/her grandfather refused to buy a De Soto 60 year ago...
Someone has to explain to this learned lady that an offer (ANY offer) is good only until it is accepted, rejected or expired. Offers (even Israeli peace offers) do not stand forever. Each one ends the day it is rejected by the Palestinians.
The man who calls himself "thinker" compares barginng about a car in a car showroom, with unlawful creation by the UN of a foreign state on a land which the UN did not own and which was inhabited by other people, compounded by expultion of some 700,000 lawful residents from their places of residence, and then military occupation by Israel of more not owned by them land in 1967.
All this is not subject to negotiations, by to enforcement of law. Negotiations about negotiations is just a political game to hide a series of crimes against person and property.
The only expected outcome of the proposed negotiations is that they will turn out to be just another proof of lawlessness and criminality of politcs, as all the previous negotiations have proved to be.
So according to your logic Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon are illegal countries. Why should the Germans not go back to Breslau, Danzig and Koenigsberg, illegally occupied by the Poles. California and New Mexico are illegally occupied by the Amercans, give them back to Mexico NOW. More? There is plenty!
To 'hdq': "Unlawful" or "Illegal" means "In violation of the law". As long as there is no law prohibiting the Jewish people from living in Palestine or having a right for self-determination establishing of Israel and Jewish settlements will remain no less lawful and legal than establishing of Jordan, Lebanon or Syria and Arabs living in these states as well as in Gaza and the West Bank.
"All this is not subject to negotiations, but to enforcement of the law".
This is very well said, and it is exactly what Norman Finkelstein has been preaching for a long time. The problem with the Jews is that they do not recognize any international law; in fact they abhor them if they do not serve their interests.
And what could someone do when the international community allows an injustice to take place, such as the grant to Israel of a land which had not belonged to the Jews?
Furthermore, what could mankind do when the world powers are all under the Zionist control and can choose to respect or ignore the international laws and treaties, according to their mean interests?
Against those who dare to raise their voice and condemn their injustices and atrocities, the Jews play the holocaust card, which has served them so well for almost sixty years.
Humankind is governed by interests instead of moral principles and it is heading towards its collapse.
Ur thinking also seem to b from 1948,not valid any more.Only a Zionist can compare human lives with lifeless cars.
are as concerned with human lives as your friends the Palestinians who say all Jews must be killed?
kanees... Did you disagree with something I've said? If so WHAT WAS IT?
Just to assist you in comprehending my statement here is a clue: I DID NOT compare "lifeless cars" with human lives. If I've done so I would talk about negotiating the number of Palestinian (or Israeli) LIVES that would be lost. I, however, compared a DEAL where a potential buyer tried to negotiate a 2013 car from the 1967 (or even 1948) sales offer with a DEAL where the Palestinian leaders try to negotiate a 2013 peace agreement from 1967 (or even 1948) peace offer.
IS IT CLEAR ENOUGH THIS TIME?
There will never peace never, the muslims think that only peace will come when all the world will be MUSLIM/
OH God protect us from the Evil.
Ms Hanan Ashrawi happens to be a Christian. So, you are either a victim of the anti-Islam propaganda, used to justify crimes against people of Africa and Asia, or are engaging in such propaganda yourself.
Hanana Asrawi, like Erekat, is a liar
@hdq //you are either a victim of the anti-Islam propaganda// No. She's not. Muslim believe that human are a single community that must worship only their Allah, according to Quran 23:52
Have a nice day all
Israeli/Palestine peace talks cant end wit precondition laid alongside. America cant do wonders. Sacrifice must rule and it is a far cry
Can you elaborate on this? WHAT do you mean by 'sacrifice'? WHO will have to sacrifice WHAT?
So much for keeping mum and avoiding statements prior and during these talks which must be held in absolute secrecy until concluded. Asrawi done not miss an opportunity to shoot her mouth off. Trouble makers on both sides will be held to account if anything goes awry because they cannot keep quiet. There is too much at stake.
"The possibility of direct negotiations now looks more real than it has in years, thanks to the old-fashioned shuttle diplomacy of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry".
Typical Jewish self-serving misperception of reality. Direct negotiations have never been so useless as they are now. You Judes swallowed the entire Palestine already, and need spit out its Arab inhabitants, somehow. This is the problem which torments you.
