For days, Ukrainians have been protesting in support of closer ties with the West, and a European free-trade deal. But Ukraine's president has rejected that deal, instead casting his lot with Russia - many say because of pressure from President Vladimir Putin.

What's going on?

Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov talks with CNN's Christiane Amanpour about the mindset of his former boss, Vladimir Putin, what it means for Ukraine - and Russia.

The Chinese leadership compensates for the lack of democracy by giving direction and dynamism to the economy. That cannot be said of Russia.

The same thing could be said about Pre-Castro Cuba Vs Today. I think Russians put a higher value on progress and being able to enjoy a higher standard of living than personal freedoms.

Looking at the history of Ukrain/USSR now Russian treatment of Ukrainains with the death of millions due to starvation, it's a wonder that Ukrainians don't try and shift their country, shovel full by shovel full, as far away from Russia as possible.

Does anyone know why SOM (Self-Organizing Maps) went out of fashion? It looks like a very cool idea but I can't find any modern references in the literature.
