Abdullah Abdullah, leading contender to replace Karzai in Afghanistan, vows to sign troop agreement with U.S. if elected

February 3rd, 2014
03:14 PM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

Leading Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday that he would sign an agreement to keep international forces in Afghanistan, and aid dollars flowing, if he were elected to succeed President Hamid Karzai.

Karzai has thus far demurred signing such a deal – a so-called Status of Forces Agreement – to the frustration of the United States and its allies.

U.S. forces are currently scheduled to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

“When we are asking President Karzai to sign it, and when we say that it is in the interest of Afghanistan that that agreement is signed sooner rather than later, that means that we will be ready to sign it when time comes,” he said.

Not only has Karzai refused to sign a deal, he has chosen this moment, the twilight of his presidency, to lash out at his supposed allies.

"They did not work for me, they worked against me," Karzai said in an interview this weekend with the UK’s Sunday Times. "America has left me with a mess."

Abdullah told Amanpour that Afghanistan will need the financial and military support of the international community “for years to come.”

“It’s highly risky what President Karzai is pursuing at the moment,” Abdullah said. “It has creating a shadow over every other thing which is happening in this country, and the people are extremely worried.”

As campaigning kicked off to succeed President Karzai, two of Abdullah’s staffers were killed – “assassinated,” as Abdullah put it – in the Afghan province of Herat.

“The environment is not risk free, but when I look at the enthusiasm of the Afghan people to participate in the elections – that is part of it is encouraging. It is highly encouraging.”

It is you idea bro..many many people killed by Abdullah+1 in last 30 yeas.. For you information that not only Abdullah+1 is vow to sign but all other candidates vow to sign the contact...those surveys which wee held was only by TOLO TV or other pro Abdullah+1 channel... It is very clear for everyone who expend time in Afghanistan that all those under the name of Mojaheden killed many many people... and because of this Mojahden, Taliban raised...if there was no Mojahdeen internal war there was no Taliban now...meanwhile I hate both of them.. but it is clear that who is winner...We should not say who will winner and who is the loser.. I hope you understand..... and please don't take it personal.. I even not vote...

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is the leading candidate who has over 20% lead over Ashraf Ghani ( an advisor and internal circle member to President karzi ) with majority support from all over Afghanistan. Since the beginning of the US intervention in Afghanistan his followers up to now fought side by side with the US and Nato allies against the taliban and terrorists in Afghanistan but, unfortunately the lessons of Washington to Zalmai Kallilzad ( former US ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq and United Nation ) with lost of over 2000 soldiers and wasting of billions Americans taxpayers money brought this war in a confusion. It's time for the Washington to make the right moves and lesson to the people who share the some goals, the is a winnable war because they still have the support of the Afghanistan people.

Who ever wins the hearts and votes of the Afghan people and becomes their next leader must face the following problems: peace talks with the Taliban, stabilizing Afghanistan, fighting corruption and nepotism, dealing with the BSA, building an efficient economy, dealing with opium cultivation, uniting the Afghan nation from different factions into one united state, eradicate poverty and malnutrition, increase health facilities and clinics and more difficult tasks that the current government could not fix in the past decade.

Karzai was a taliban sympathizer and has sided with the taliban for the last 13 years. he has a tribal mind. it was a huge mistake of US to put a former member of taliban in power. at least abdullah abdullah has one advantage and that is his anti taliban background and thought. he will not be using his position to shield the taliban from afghan Army and the internatioinal forces as karzai did in the last 13 years and is still doing. right now karzai is releasing taliban criminals and helping the taliban to infiltrate the goverment and control more territory.

Afghan people should vote for someone who have enemety with Taliban & Al-Qaeda not someone like Karzai calling Taliban as his brother & releasing their around 7000 fighters from jails and International community need someone to fight with Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan not someone to ally them otherwise thier efforts will fail as its going to be fail by Karzai administration Taliban Brothers.

As long as Abdullah Abdullah doesn't insist his Kandahari step father is his real Tajik father who died when Abdullah was young. I mean, if he lies about is origins to gain votes, then he is not worth it in the end, and will likely divide Afghanistan into pieces. Another HABIBULLAH KALAKANI?

Abdullah is a criminal as the rest of them. He and his Jamaat Islami party, Muhaqiq, his vice president nominee, and Sayyaf, his other ally destroyed Kabul in early 1990s and killed tens of thousands innocent people. These are war criminals. They should be in jail or executed, not running for office.

    My honest impression of him?

He is the type who will need U.S. and NATO to fight his war for him. Withou U.S. and NATO he wont survive. He will bleed U.S. taxpayers more. Will he be nearer to peace in Afghanistan? Then, for what?
