U.S., Europe may have prevented invasion of Ukraine, Polish foreign minister says

June 2nd, 2014
03:28 PM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

American and European action “has possibly prevented a full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

“America provided leadership on Ukraine,” Sikorski said, countering the common narrative that the West stood weakly in the face of Russian aggression.

U.S. President Barack Obama is headed to Europe this week on a trip that will end by commemorating the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy. His first step, however, will be Poland, which played a key role in the Ukraine crisis.

“We are always glad to see President Obama in Europe,” Sikorski said.

Despite a presidential election, Ukraine remains extremely volatile. Five militants were killed in the volatile eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk on Monday after they took part in a large coordinated assault on a border guard base, an official at the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service told CNN.

In response to Ukrainian unrest, NATO bolstered its presence near Russia’s border; the U.S. sent 150 paratroopers to Poland.

“We would welcome more troops, both from Europe and from the United States,” Sikorski said.

“We simply think that the level of security across the NATO area should be more or less even. And at the moment, we have NATO bases as legacies of the Cold War, in places where they were useful during the confrontation with the Soviet Union and it doesn't take into account the events of the last quarter of a century. And this should now be addressed.”

He nonetheless expressed hope that Ukraine’s new leader, Petro Poroshenko, can bridge the divide necessary to bring stability.

“Petro Poroshenko comes from the Party of Regions, was a minister under Mr. Yanukovych, and is someone who is credible for the West and should be someone that Russia should be able to do business with.”

“I think they are talking already, and it would be good for the two countries to normalize relations, because they need each other.”

Russian President Putin, he told Amanpour, has perhaps realized that he bit oof more than he could chew in Ukraine.

“I think the costs of annexing Crimea are probably much higher than he had budgeted for. One hears that pension salaries are not being paid, that the banking system is in disarray; the agriculture; the tourist season is lost. And it's costing tens of billions of dollars.”

“Eastern Ukraine is three-and-a-half times bigger, so the cost would be proportionally higher. But it's good when realism wins out.”

So will Russia, Amanpour asked, re-join the path of normalization – joining international treaty and trade organizations – that it was on before the current crisis?

“Only one person knows, and that's President Putin.”

The airport attack brought to light the presence in Donetsk of a well-equipped, close-knit military unit operating on the separatist side.

They call themselves the Vostok Battalion (English: East Battalion), which is the name of a former ethnic Chechen special forces unit commanded by Russian officers.

It once fought for Moscow against rebels in the Russian republic of Chechnya, and later served in the war against Georgia over South Ossetia in 2008.

Political pressure forced the dissolution of the old Vostok but, as regional security analyst Mark Galeotti argues in a recent blog post, it may have been reformed for covert tasks in Ukraine.

The USA is intent upon starting a new cold war. They are a failing state, actually bankrupt. A new cold war would allow them to print more paper. Now they are going to show off NATO, their basic neo-imperialistic creation. President Putin does not like wars and has no intention of starting one. Russia has never made an aggressive war against a European nation. Crimea has been a part of Russia since the 18th century.

The only country that wanted to form a coalition against Hitler's Germany in 1936 was Russia. It was ignored. It was left along to help an anti-fascist movement during Spanish civil war with US banning any assistance in its hope to weaken communist movement in Europe.

Yeah, because it's the Americans and Europeans that stormed into Crimea and eastern Ukraine waiving AK47s around, taking over government buildings, and threatening to "shoot anyone in the head who tries to vote."

        Idiot.

The blame rests solely on the shoulders on the Russians and pro-Russian supporters. Ukraine is a sovereign nation that has been invaded by Russian citizens and they have every right to defend the nation, including using military force. The vast majority of the insurgents that were killed in the airport operation were identified as Russian citizens and transported back to Russian for their burial. If you want to point your finger, point it at Russia.

Russia: stop sending Chechen and Russian mercenaries into Ukraine. The Ukrainian army blasted 33 of them and send the bodies to be buried back in their countries. They have nothing to do in Ukraine. Stop terrorizing the population, Ukrainians and Russian Ukrainians want peace and live their lives. Stop arming the terrorist rebels. Arming the terrorist rebels invites reaction from the Ukrainian authorities to defend their territory, and when the rebels cowardly hide behind women and children, civilians die.

People, you feel so self-righteous now, but think how many terrible mistakes has US done in the past 20 years! What makes you think that unconditional support of Maidan Ukrainians and demonizing every russian move (Syria, Snowden, even the tip on Boston Marathon bombing, and Sochi Olympics) is just another costly foreign policy mistake? Or another deliberate push to an unnecessary war, like Iraq or Vietnam? Have you forgotten the "patriotism" before Iraq invasion, and the "freedom fries", and Jessica Lynch or Pat Tillman lies? Have you forgotten that Bin Laden was created by CIA as a tool against USSR?

Russia sells oil and gas and is profitable. China makes stuff and is also a profitable business. US and Europe unfortunatly are in deep debt and are practically bankrupt. Its a fact. Whether we agree with that or not. And that is why they are trying to control everything, trying to expand their sphere of influence. Its the only way for them to continue borrowing. For centuries Poland and Russia were in dispute about this territory and Poland still desperately wants it. No surprise Russia is blamed for everything by Poland. Centuries ago the Orthodox population of Ukraine has been saved by Russia from extermination by the advancing Catholic states and from the south tribes and Muslim expansions, gained additional lands during Soviet times and has been established as a State. Russians and Ukrainians have been thought at the same schools and Universities, working side by side in Ukraine and Russia, been happy to meet each other abroad: mixed families, friends, economical and cultural links..Somebody is convincing the Ukrainians now that Russians were actually enemies and they had different paths and that they should hate each other. Nobody in the West will suffer as much as Ukrainians and Russians looking at these pictures and films, because people in those horrible images are us: they had watched the same movies, read the same books, they suffer in the way we did, there are relatives and friends.
The Ukrainian East wanted a dialogue with Kiev that have never happened! More and more civilians want to take part in the separatist movement now because they do not see any way back. Too many already experienced unforgettable losses. Yes, there may be people from Russia who come to join, I hardly could believe that there would not be any. Even our friends Ukrainian scientists from the region now on the side of separatists. Keep going free Ukraine!

Now that is a huge simplification.

I agree that Poland (Republic of Two Nations to be strict) was fighting wars with Russia (I mean especially Time of Troubles and false Dimitrij).

Moscow actually, which was not the only Russian state, playing a a big role in history. There was also Novgorod. And Kiev was actually the centre of Russian culture. Not wiped out by Polish as You claim but by Mongol invasion in 1240.

Ukraine was a place where Cossacs held against all the neighbors that tried to make them back into being peasants and work at the fields (yes – these were feudal times – nobles were forcing peasants to work for them). They were fighting Polish nobles (Chmielnicki upprising), Ottomans and Khan of Crymean Tatars (yes – Crymea was inhabited mostly by Tatars until Stalin deported most of them). They fought Russian empire as well. There were uprisings such as that led by Mazepa and later by Pugachev. After the last one Russian empress Catherine formally dissolved Zaporhoshian Host.

Poland also stopped Catholic Extremism at one point – Teutonic Order. Also Poland (not Russia) stopped Ottomans expansion at their prime (google the siege of Vienna in 1683 if You don't believe me).

Russian people – please try to find information on Your own and do not trust, what is being fed to You by Your own government. You might discover a whole new history. True history, not the one that is being uses as a tool to make things looking "black and white" (in favour of comrade Putin of course).

PS: I'm not Rusophobic at all. I have Russian friends. I'm afraid of Soviet Union second coming however and i still remember that for comrade Putin "Collapse of the Soviet Union was 'catastrophe of the century' "

I believe the west wanted a totaly different outcome. They thought they would change government in Kiev and take Ukraine away from Russian influence. Now they lost Crimea and will lose eastern Ukraine. the only win for the west is that they can now portray Russia as evil thru propaganda. US is making its companies to not do business with Russia. Thats just pathetic. its a weak position. Lets not do business with Russia cause Russia is evil. thats weak...

This will not stop because each time there is unrest over the world oil prices tend to go up.

Russia is a big producer of oil. And most of prices for Russian natural gas contracts are indexed based on oil price. So it stuffs pockets of comrade Putin and his former KGB friends quite well.

In the long term EU energy policy and diversification of gas suppliers might help !!!

A point to make junta is when an army takes power and assumes the role of government and appoints those into positions of admin and policing ie Burma , Thailand , Indonesia , Pakistan. How is ukraine a junta? the russian puppet that was deposed by a massive public uprising who used mass murder to attempt to hold power. Now Russia destabilizes ukraine deliberately with the constant reference to fascist or other ww2 mantras only fools buy russian propaganda.

It's a fascist puppet regime that took power by an organized armed coup using paramilitary storm troops that considers everyone who don't agree with them sub human.

Same as the westerners consider anyone non-western sub human. In fact, the only difference between nazis and kiev's puppeteers is that nazis operated openly.

Western propaganda is a direct descendant from Goebbels propaganda machine with ukrainian ww2 nazi collaborators currently living their days happily in countries like Canada.

They hold down all post that refer to specific people (mine referred to comrade P.) to prevent eventual legal action against them. Also attack of Soviet army on Poland in 17-th of September 1939 is a commonly known fact.
Same as Soviet crimes in Katyn.

It's terrible that civilians become collateral damage in any conflict. However, the blame of these people's deaths and injuries rests on the shoulders of the pro-Russian militants that have taken up arms to pick a fight with the government of Ukraine, which is a fight against its citizens and its sovereignty. In every other country, that is what is called an insurgent. The insurgents are the ones who called down those bombs. The insurgents are the ones who have destabilized areas of Ukraine. The insurgents are the ones who use civilians as human shields, which is exactly how those people got injured or killed.

These attacks have nothing to do with the U.S., Europe, to the west in general. They have everything to do with Russian insurgents operating on behalf of Russian interests (Crimea ring a bell? How about Georgia?), running around with brand new Russian weaponry including ground-to-air missiles, acting like a bunch of bandits looting and preventing fair elections, and forcing the hand of the Ukraine government to protect its interests. The Ukraine government does not have effective local law enforcement, so they must resort to military force. They would not have had to come to that point if these Russian insurgents didn't take up arms against the sovereignty of Ukraine. Every country has a right to defend its sovereignty and that is exactly what Ukraine is doing right now. This is also a powerful reminder that citizens need to steer clear of the insurgents so they do not act as human shields and become collateral damage.

You need to point the finger of blame in the direction it belongs. If it were not for these Russian insurgents, those people NEVER would have been in a position to be collateral damage in a conflict that the Russian insurgents created.

After looking at some CCTV footage of the attack area, it is clear that this was not an aerial bombing. The attack was initiated from the ground level. You can even see the blowback from the launching system (either an RPG or a portable ground-to-air missile system) in the tree line just before the explosion happened about 50m away.

Regardless, the blame still rests on the shoulders of those who have created this insurgency, which are the Russians and all those who support the pro-Russian insurgency.

So much heavy weapons in the hands of "peaceful pro-Russian civilians." They are in Ukrainian territory, firing against Ukrainian army, laughing, see video. If one airstrike blows them to ashes, then suddenly they become 'poor civilians' murdered by the "Western Countries and the Kiev Junta." Shame on those terrorists.

Any psychopath thinks that the guilty side is the victim. There is always a spiral of guilt in any political conflict but who is the first to cross the line is important. Up to date nearly no civilian has died due to a direct action of separatists: most deaths are from bombing, burning and sniper shouting and it all happened because the unleashed ant-Russian forces in Kiev rashes to ban Russian language, vandalize Russian graves and monuments and ignored the memorandum signed in February. The multiethnic origin and existence of Ukraine should go before of the narrow nationalistic ambitions of minority warmed up up the geopolitical interests of the new "friends and protectors" from the West.
