As the United Nations held an emergency meeting over reports of Russian troops in Ukrainian territory, Christiane Amanpour was joined by the top Ukrainian official in London, Andrii Kuzmenko, for analysis of what this could mean for his nation.
Amanpour asked what the diplomat was hoping for from the U.N meeting in New York.
"Since the sanctions that are already imposed against Russia we do have the terrible aggravation of the situation, it means that those sanctions are weak and insufficient. We are calling for a full stop of cooperation with the aggressor, for further tougher sanctions and further support of Ukraine."
"We are not at this stage asking for military assistance"
After what happened to Georgia in 2008, was he confident that Ukraine could defend itself against a potential Russian attack?
"This is a very new stage of conflict. We will halt the aggressor and I have no doubt we will defeat them but, for that reason we will need assistance from the West since we are fighting not just for territorial integrity of Ukraine."
"We are fighting against the war in Europe that could explode the continent."
'It is inappropriate to tolerate the use of force in the 21st century'
Kuzmenko was unrelenting in a powerful attack on the Russian government's behavior in this conflict. He told the program that he believed Putin's Russia was acting in a manner befitting the "19th century."
"We are witnessing another war crime," he told Amanpour. "Just due to the certain imperial ambitions."
Summing up Russia's actions, the diplomat said, "We should remember the war started with imperial ambitions and will end with shame for the nation."
First "Putin shot down an airliner" of which we still have yet to hear any proof and now a "Russian invasion".
If Russia is "attacking" Ukraine then why is there almost a million Donbass refugees fleeing to Russia from Ukrainian government forces?
If Ukraine is "at war" with Russia then why 500+ Ukrainian soldiers flee to Russia for safety when encircled by the anti-Kiev rebels?
Who shot those people during Maidan coup that toppled an elected president in violation of an agreement with the opposition? Your leaked phone calls show it was someone connected the current US-supported regime. A classic false flag op.
What about Nuland slipping about 5 billion spent on "regime change" in Ukraine?
Why still no word about MH17? Russians provided extensive information about Ukrainian jet being in the area during the crash. Another false flag op?
Why no word about the censorship going on in Ukraine regarding anything not in line with government propaganda you directly copy and paste?
Your brainwashing is vomit inducing. Stop lying.
I agree with you that the west has been acting odd in regards to Ukraine. I've never heard the word separatist used so much until now.....generally the west is on the side of freedom fighters, its a narrative that we've used many times to justify wars and bombings. Please don't think that the American people are just dumb robots believing everything the media feeds us. We are out of touch with the true power brokers and vise versa......they do crazy things for crazy reasons. Nobody wants war with anyone, especially Russia. But again the people in power do not like challenges to their authority. I think many western leaders believe that since we won the cold war and easily could've kicked Russia when it was down and out.....that Russia has no right to continue acting as if it's on equal footing with the west and the US as it once was with the USSR. I dunno but i think it's in everyone best interest that we solve this peacefully and work together instead of against each other....life is hard enough as it is. I personally have nothing against the Russian people or any desire to fight them and I know our leaders aren't the best representatives of our people.
Oh, by the way, you say "Ukraine's President calls for peace"
Well, last time your US-installed puppet Poroshenko "called for peace" he ordered an onslaught that slaughtered hundreds of civilians in cold blood and made thousands homeless refugees fleeing to Russia for safety. But hey, who needs to report on someone fleeing to Russia for safety from the "good guys" with heavy guns, right?
If Russia is so concerned about the people of eastern Ukraine why not bus them into Russia or Crimea? you have plenty of land.....i ask because i don't know, i would love to better understand Russia and its position on all of this. The intellectuals of our countries must communicate better and understand each other better. Russia would be a much better Allie then enemy.
Russian declaration proposal in UNSC for ceasefire in Ukraine got blocked by the West.
So much for peace loving.
Russian troll hard at work.
Tell that to the people who lost their loved ones to Ukie artillery.
The Russian trolls have been out in force all along – I hear the going rate is the equivalent of about $0.75 per post - you have to write a lot of pro-Russian posts to make a living that way.
Russia's complete disregard for international law has been obvious from the start, and after the load of lies, starting with "military exercises" and "we don't have troops in Crimea..." it's classic and sadly, typical behavior. It's 1938 all over again, and just as happened with Hitler, it may take direct opposition to Putin's invasions to end the crisis - but at what cost? This entire fiasco will just accelerate the re-collapse of Russia, and as always, it's not Putin, but the Russian people who will pay the ultimate price.
Thank you geek. The Russian "pravda" crowd is nauseating...
To our Ukrainian friends – sorry we are so slow in helping you out. When Russians raped and pillaged Finland the world watched in silence, it won't happen again.
Long live Ukraine!
Thank God you said that, I often think only trolls reading papers in times like this, they are working the papers in Europe too. It´s disgusting!
Putin continues to deny he has anything to do with the fighting in Ukraine. He claims these "non-Russian" Russian fighters crossing the border are "volunteers". Since they are disowned by Putin (along with all the military equipment that is not Russian), then they are fair targets for a cruise missile attack. I would like to see how Putin's story changes after one of his columns of invaders is neutralized by a couple of cruise missiles!
Ukraine is fighting to save this nation from being "reclaimed" by Russia. America and Europe are doing nothing to support them (militarily). Putin walked into Crimea while Ukraine was at a very weak moment, politically and militarily. Putin's puppet, Yanucovich, set the stage. He stole everything he could, then ran away to hide under Putin's protection.
What is happening today in Ukraine will be repeated by Putin in all his former USSR countries. Putin now feels confident that no one is going to stop him. Someone else in history used exactly the same tactics resulting in WWII.
We in Europe need to stand up against this reckless KGB adventurer! Weakness breeds aggression, as WWII proved. No new Chamberlainism. More than 200 of my fellow Dutch countrymen shot from the air by Putin's criminal henchmen, and they will pay dear for what they did. All terrorism must be eradicated, we have to set as example by crippling Putins Russia with severe economic sanctions.
IT IS NOT RUSSIA, IT IS PUTIN, AND ONLY PUTIN, he wants a War, how stupid he is and he remembered the West he has Atomic Bombs, INCREDIBLE
Anyone care to rebute my arguments?
Western sheeple doing as their mass media directs them.
On the topic of Russia and the Ukraine, I believe that dealing with Russia in a real and decisive manner is hampered due to the fact that economic sanctions just aren't really that effective – and a lot of it has to do with U.S. economic policies in place which have, FOR DECADES, allowed nefarious groups and individuals like Russian oligarchs, drug cartels, and terrorists the ability to subvert economic sanctions altogether. One of these vehicles, and perhaps the most powerful one, are American business incorporation statutes allowing the existence of "shell companies". Approximately 44 states within the U.S. have business incorporation policies that allow individuals to officially start a business with less information than it would take to acquire a friggin library card – I'm talkin no name, no address of the individual, no kind of identifying information linking that person to the business whatsoever. Business incorporators can instead use proxies or "trusted agents", someone who can intercept mail or other correspondence on behalf of the business. These proxies or "trusted agents" are not legally liable to the business at all. They aren't required to relinquish any information on who actually controls the business at all, they can just simply plead rights afforded to them by the Fifth Amendment and remain silent. This makes prosecuting and carrying out tort claims in court as well as criminal prosecutions considerably difficult. Thanks to these state incorporation statutes, which are NOT limited to individuals located outside the United States, allow the formation of "shell companies". Shell companies are companies that exist solely on paper, are not businesses, composed of actual brick and mortar. The problem with these shell companies is that services and processes afforded to brick and mortar businesses are given to shell companies as well. Bank accounts, lines of credit, and property can be established in the name of the business, the shell company, and this allows the money laundering and fraud aspect. You have a business that exists solely on paper and isn't linked to the person or group who actually controls the business and you have a bank account established in the business's name, a bank account for the business which isn't tied to anyone which, effectively, allow governments and individuals to subvert any kind of economic sanctions! These policies are a criminal/money launderer's DREAM! It's like economic contraception preventing unwanted prosecutions, and these shell companies are EXTREMELY EASY to start, only costs a couple hundred dollars and about ten or fifteen minutes – worse yet nefarious individuals or groups often possess more than one shell company. Russia and its oligarchs have been exploiting these policies FOR YEARS, YOU CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE THE SCOPE AND MAGNITUDE OF WHICH THESE POLICIES HAVE BEEN EXPLOITED BY CRIMINALS IN GENERAL, LET ALONE RUSSIA. The prospect of having economic sanctions imparted on them humors Russia very much, in fact, when U.S. economic sanctions were imparted to Russia's oligarchs, they considered it a "badge of honor". They LAUGHED at the U.S. government and sung carols, tickled over the MORBID IRONY of the U.S. government imposing sanctions and it being U.S. economic policies that allowed them to subvert those sanctions. It's because of this, folks, that most sanctions are useless, they're only a façade used by governments to show the people they govern that they are in control, have an active hand in the situation when really they don't. These business incorporation policies have FOR YEARS been a thorn in the side of the U.S. government and its law enforcement agencies, a source of EXCRUCIATING EMBARRASSMENT. Legislation has been proposed to fix this problem, but due to America's embarrassingly INEPT, STAGNANT, and CORRUPT congress, legislation to fix the problem has died on the vine. Barack Obama, himself, admitted to having utilized these policies to raise money to campaign, subverting policies governing campaign contributions – and it was he, when he was an Illinois senator, who proposed the original legislation correcting the problem to begin with.
It just goes to prove how pervasive hypocrisy exists in this WORLD.The little thieves are hanged but great ones escape!
I Warn the US and EU countries ; not to indulge into such differences , ignoring the sleeping cell of ISIS that will flood your countries with blood.
I suggest that you deal with this issue by letting Ukrain to have federal govrnment, through which Eastern Ukrain will be governed by themselves. This will end the problem. By doing so; EU will have a better economy , and will be able the THREAT of isis facing them.
Am from nigeria, the problem is escalating to a full scale war and its being caused by the ukraine govenment,eu and usa because the ukraine govenment refused to recorgnise the russia speaking people leaving in the country,so i advice nato and its allies to stop any millitary exercise in ukraine border with russia, dat could make russia more aggresive and may lead to war between nato and russia, peace and ceasefire is the better way to resolve dis issue
