By Mick Krever, CNN
As ISIS released a video Tuesday showing the beheading of a second American, a top State Department official told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour to “stay tuned” on U.S. plans to combat the organization.
“We are putting the features in place, developing a broad regional coalition, a broad international coalition, working to get a new Iraqi government stood up, working to get our plans in place. So stay tuned,” Brett McGurk, Deputy U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran, told Amanpour.
“Obviously ISIS is a very sophisticated organization. You cannot just go in militarily and start dropping bombs, and hope that it’s going to work out. You have to have a very sophisticated approach to this.”
Just weeks after beheading American journalist James Foley, a British-accented ISIS militant executed another U.S. journalist, Steven Sotloff.
The executioner says the U.S. is “paying the price” for intervention, in the form of airstrikes, against ISIS; he threatens the life of a British captive.
The U.S. says it is working to authenticate the video.
“We need a comprehensive, global, regional, and local approach, which we can then help enable. We can’t just come in as the United States and do this on our own; that would be counter-productive; that a lesson we’ve learned over the last decade.”
Despite the authorization of airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq – including a successful operation just this weekend – President Obama has drawn criticism for not acting more boldly, including from some in his own party.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, told NBC this weekend, “I think I’ve learned one thing about this president, and that is he’s very cautious. Maybe in this instance too cautious.”
President Obama drew elicited surprise and criticism last week when he said “we don't have a strategy yet” to combat ISIS.
“I think President Obama has shown,” McGurk said, “that when organizations do these types of things to American citizens, they do not go unanswered.”
He told Amanpour that President Obama will focus on the issue during a NATO summit this week in Wales, and he will chair a special session of the U.N. Security Council in New York later this month.
“When I say ‘stay tuned,’ I don’t want to suggest that we’re sitting idle. There have been over a hundred airstrikes in Iraq over the last few weeks, and those orders very much remain in place.”
“We are over the skies of Iraq, we are actively watching what ISIS is doing, and we are taking targets as they become available, within the mission that the President thus far has authorized. And we are building now a broader campaign plan that we’ll develop over the days and weeks ahead.”
What we need to be concerned about are the 100+ Americans who have joined ISIS for reasons we have yet to understand why. Remember – 9-11 was only a few men in 4 airplanes. Boston was only 2 brothers. Imagine what damage more than 100 terrorists with U S passports could do.
You count the days... USA be aware.... Hope they are.
9-11 was brought to us by the Saudis, nothing to do with Iraq or Afghanistan. Cowboy GWB attacked the wrong country for the wrong reasons. If Saddam was still in power, there would be no ISIS in Iraq! Sure, he was not a "nice guy", but his country was functioning unlike today. Nice guys don't survive in Middle East, only the powerful and brutal. This is what the people respect.
Obama is being overly cautious for very valid reasons. The warmongers in DC are relentlessly pushing him to "do something". What, just doesn't matter. Just get back to the massive bombings and destruction that put us where we are today. Obama won his Nobel Peace Prize simply for not being a Bush! Now he is earning this prize.
Just what can we accomplish when all of our allies turn cowards. Same applies to the situation in Ukraine. Putin has already conquered most of Western Europe, they simply don't acknowledge this yet. Just TURN OFF THE GAS
Stan, you mean the Sadaam who killed so many Kurds and tortured his own people. Who used chemical warfare on the Iraqis? The Sadaam who attacked Kuwait just to burn up their oil stocks to drive up the profits of his own oil reserves?
No Sir, Sadaam had to go. The problem is when Obama took office he pulled everyone out before the mission was over. I didn't agree on the length of time there, but damnit if we were going to do it, might as well done it right.
Yet all of Obama's cautiousness didn't save the lives of these two American reports. How about that? Seems ISIS doesn't see things the same way you do.
It is a fact that Saddam poisoned the Kurds with DOW Chemical gas supplied to him by Reagan/Cheney/Rumsfeld and he invaded Kuwait with Bush #41 approval. Saddam was a bad guy because we created him and fed him like a mad dog. It was the mistake of the century to invade Iraq, a mistake that will keep paying for next 2-3 generations. It is still not too late to prosecute GWB and his cabal of criminals.
So Killer Klown, Sadaam "had to go". Then our democratically elected al-Maliki "had to go"! Al-Maliki did everything Sadaam would have done. Cleansed the government of everyone he did not like, fired military leaders WE trained for his country, excluded Kurds and Sunnis from participation in a unity government! Refused to protect any residual forces in Iraq!
Obama withdrew under an agreement signed by GWB, don't forget! Residual forces were not welcomed.
Allied forced killed and maimed how many Iraqis? Of course our "allies" pulled out before we did, they had enough of this senseless war that resolved nothing. Now Iraq is being taken over by ISIS. This would never have happened with Sadaam in power! Iraq's economy has been completely destroyed, their oil resources are being sold off at bargain prices by ISIS.
Iraq today would be much better off under Sadaam!
StanCalif, you do realize that Saddam's WMD are now in Syria, right? He had years of sanctions and got them out before the US invaded. The reason even the liberal media wants Obama to do something is that IS (formerly ISIS) has grown WAY too fast in too short of a time. Yesterday, Amanpour reported that they now rule an area that contains SIX MILLION people.. They have taken over large portions of Syria and Iraq. You can't be passive with these people.. and numerous commentator have said that the IS can NOT be defeated without "boots on the ground", but Obama is saying NO.. If he continues this passive approach – this group will continue to spray and poison every region they touch.. I would say an attack on the UK and/or the US is likely imminent.. Sticking your head in the sand, then going golfing in Martha's Vineyard is NOT going to solve this problem. Obama is too weak of a president - his lack of experience is now showing.. The IS is winning right now..
... what do you mean " for reasons e have yet to understand" ..? ... what is there to understand? ... they are terrorist and shoul;d be dealt with accordingly
We the people of the world salute the reports who laid their lives for delivering truth to the world. We the people of the world pledge to fight terrorism as terrorism has no following, it is but a group of spoilt brats who tries to show off their achievements through such acts of cowardice as they cannot fight a face to face war. People of the world know that terrorism is faced by all the countries of the world in one form or other and we have to unite to counter terrorism where ever it shows up and destroy their existence to set an example. We cannot be divided in any way in our thoughts in fighting terrorism as we have to be unified to end all new forms of terrorism as and when they come up. We all are peace loving and living in harmony is a dream which is fulfilled only through containing terrorism and eliminating such acts of violence against humanity through the language in which they need to be answered be it war does not matter. We the people of earth pledge to fight terrorism, to end terrorism, and to wipe out terrorism off the face of earth. God give us the strength to do thus.
Seems to me Obama promising the 'most transparent' government has really meant that if one looks through their skulls, there are zero brain cells. In other words, 'stay tuned', means 'totally clueless.' If we just started lynching an Arab a day, starting with the Club Gitmo crowd, maybe things would change. But the current bunch of teenagers at 1600 PA Ave. can't fathom that.
OBAMA IS A FKING MUSLIM. PERIOD. AND FK YOU ALL.
Yes he is and you can Thank GW Bush for getting him elected
I'll bet you also believe Charles and David Koch are the "good fairies" and they will make you "healthy, wealthy and wise"?
soros and Buffet are different, good grief you are Harry Reid, not a multi millionaire look a like
I find it hard to fathom how anyone can get so pathologically ignorant as you
Hate DOES that to people. The one damaged most by hate is the hater.
Precisely, and because Obama is a Muslim: he has a big surprise in store for us: by letting ISIS in America.
And your evidence is...?
Something gave you a heaping helping of hate. You hate everyone and everything, it seems. Maybe rethinking your life might be a good idea.
As for being a Muslim, you know nothing about Islam, or it would be clear to you that Obama isn't one.
Muslims are prohibited by Allah from killing other Muslims. Obama has gone after many of them and killed many. If he were a Muslim, he wouldn't DARE do that. It would guarantee hell fire for him to do so.
Just wanting to hate him by calling him a Muslim doesn't make him one. It only makes YOU proclaim your own ignorance. And your hate is a poison, corroding YOU inside. In two sentences, you show how your own hate has rubbed off any sense of humanity you once had. So the one hurt most by your hate is...YOU.
It may read like a script for a good movie but here is my take on the whole situation in Iraq, Syria and the Arab spring. The muslim brotherhood supported by Turkey and Obama is reviving the Ottoman Empire through what we called the Arab spring, all the countries formerly belonging to this empire are affected. ISIS and al baghdadi were for all an unexpected turn of events as they were supposed to overthrow Assad in the grand scheme of things but chose to follow their own plan instead. Obama is unwilling to bomb ISIS as it is the main fighting force that is still needed to overthrow Assad and other countries like Jordan and Egypt. Bombing ISIS would be the end of the Ottoman Caliphate dream for Turkey and the muslim brotherhood. So Obama will go as far as criticism from the international community and from within his own administration will push him. But in the end he will leave ISIS in tact.
Sounds like you need a "Take Two" because your first script is going to result in a movie that does very poorly at the box office.
You're the worst movie critic ever. Someone in your family should be offered to ISIS for a beheading. I'd watch that movie w/ my popcorn n rootbeer in hand you B O O B J O B.
It's based on a true story. Movies like that are usually a hard sell.
Yes, and of course Obama is also in a pact with Sauron and the evil easter bunny to invade Mars and Mercury. I know exactly how this will play out because I am also pathologically paranoid and ignorant like you.
yeah yeah but in the mean time, the story I put up here is on your tv every night as soon as you turn it on for the news. So I guess I'm not that paranoid after all seeing as it is really happening.
You left the Saudis out of your movie? They are the biggest source of funding for Wahhabi Islam on the planet. They wrote the version of Islam that IS adopted, including a justification for their right to rule. The only real problem now is that IS doesn't see the Saudis as talking the talk they have been giving, so they don't accept the House of Saud as authentic Islamic rule.
From the moment Al Baghdadi decided to go it alone he could no longer accept any other view on his caliphate. After all you either are the caliph or you're not. They either pledge allegiance to your religious authority or they are apostates. By claiming to be caliph Al Baghdadi has put himself above the Saudi king and all others. From islamic point of view he has placed himself above all men right under the prophet mohammed himself.
The costliest mistake of the Obama's regime was arming rebel 2 fight the regime in Syria an dat's why the president applies alot of caution not 2 commit another mistake as such. However, i think is high time he uses republicans'policiest 2 end dis csisis in Iraq. With Isis de world is in grave danger
The United States would understandably not wish to commit ground forces, that would become a quagmire, but the air strikes should be greatly intensified. Wherever the leadership of ISIS shows itself, it should be eliminated. It should not have been permitted to reach this size and sophistication.
Drones are like mosquitoes! They're ALWAYS "hanging around"....looking for an opening. They may bite..only one ISIS member at a time. But THEIR "bite" doesn't just leave an itchy bump. And one ISIS member here...and...one ISIS member there...and soon we're talking about REAL NUMBERS!! No American ground troops are lost. No American pilots are lost!. It's just the cost of gas and the cost of munitions that the American tax payer has to concern himself with. And just THINK of all the "live training" our drone pilots will receive...with REAL LIVE ISIS targets!
Not a word on Odessa massacre where people were burned alive by maidan's thugs.
RT > CNN
The Nobel Peace Price In Advance recipient's hands are covered in blood of ISIS victims after feeding ISIS in Syria.
Reblogged this on kellylynn212.
I trust Obama to come up with a good plan.
About Golfing or Iraq?
Both. He's an expert at men's suits too.
Oh you poor soul.. Obama is going to be passive – he will still engage in airstrikes, but that won't be sufficient to stop the IS - they've taken over too vast of regions. They've grown too big to be contained by air strikes. Remember where Obama was right after the news of James Foley's death occurred - he was out on the golf course yucking it up with his friends.. giving out fist bumps.. but yeah, go ahead and put all your faith into the man..
I suppose you don't think he should even want other nations to participate in holding ISIS to account? If other nations aren't willing to step up to the plate, why must America do it all? Without their help, we'd be heading for what could be yet another debacle. He relied on their participation on that "red line" about using chem weapons, and they all chickened out. He has no reason to think they won't repeat that if it seems necessary to go after ISIS in Syria.
They seem willing to let the U.S. EAT the blame for anything that goes wrong, and enjoy the benefits they'd get if the U.S. did things right. It's a no-risk policy. The U.S. can still do what it needs to do to protect our own lands, and I don't doubt they're already active on that. If Europe can sit on its hands about everything else, we can let them keep doing it until they decide to join the U.S. so we can go after these maggots together.
ISIS threatens Europe every bit as much – maybe more – than the U.S. If they aren't alarmed enough to take a stand, why should WE do all the dirty work for them? Doing that only reinforces their cowardice, and insures they'll keep letting US do the work.
Maybe it's a good idea to wait until they ARE alarmed enough. That WILL happen; it seems inevitable. That is the time to take action. When it can really BE effective. Europe seems content to let the U.S. act as global exterminator. It's time they took some responsibility on these matters. Only TOGETHER can we end the scourge.
The only thing that matters for the USA is whether or not ISIS is a danger to us. If so, and it appears to me they are, then the president has an obligation to inform the people why it is and also why the US must destroy ISIS, even if the cost is high. The alternative to this could be the equivalent of another 9/11. Negotiating with these people is like negotiating with the NAZIS in 1941. We may not have a choice in this matter.
I wish things were so straightforward as grandpopkfm suggests. He wrote, "The only thing that matters to the USA is whether or not ISIS is a danger to us." Well, we learned that the 2003 invasion was not about weapons of mass destruction. We know that "Operation Iraqi Freedom" didn't hold water outside of the Pentagon parking lot. For 60 years US ME policy has been about two things, Israeli security and oil. It's not about "us." -- During his time, Saddam Hussein nationalized the Iraqi oil industry. After the US 2003 invasion the industry was turned over to Exxon, BP , Chevron and Halliburton. The US found Saddam and gave him to the Shiites for execution. Former army officers who served Saddam helped ISIS push the so called Iraqi government/army out of Mosul and Tikrit in June 2014. They are capable of ousting ISIS from the Sunni Triangle, but they want two things. They want to be free of Shiite/state sponsored genocide. Secondly, they want Iraqis to benefit from oil production. Iraq is one of the largest oil producers in the world, but where does the money go? (We know that the money from ISIS held oil fields goes to ISIS, which is part of the appeal of ISIS.) - Foreign policy is usually and long game. Yet ISIS is a clear at present danger. - I like this Brett McGurk person. Rumsfeld is a thug. -- Obama is too cautious, I agree. I think that in the short run the Green Zone is a death trap. - But America will prevail. I hope "we" begin to understand the Old World and realize that North Dakota is all "we" need.
We are so screwed.
Disgusting the lack of organization from the leadership in the US. Maybe the President needs to focus less on parties, golf, and fundraising and more on leading the US.
To lead you must first be a leader.....
typical sock puppet comment
Isis is foolish to challenge the United States. They have ten of thousands of troops! The United States has already killed f hundreds of thousands of infidels just as strong and just as brave as ISIS. It's like the Cobra swaying in front of the Mongoose. The Mongoose sits and waits its time – then kills the Cobra, quickly and violently. Then eats its body and soul! Obama is a Mongoose – patient and deadly! The Americans who have joined ISIS already? They will have their heads cut off as ISIS pleads with Obama to stop the reign of fire that will consume them. Another Enemy! Another viscious Dictator! Taken out to the wood shed to have their bones plucked clean. And then – where will Puttin be hiding??
Have you been paying attention to the news? We need a LEADER in office before any of that will occur. Not a placating, golfing, muslim sympathizer.
Hate to break it to you so late in the game. Bush is no longer in the White House. We have a leader. Your failure to acknowledge the obvious is typical of the uneducated.
Yeah right, TomnPitt. Our leadership does NOT know what they're doing. If you ask me – Obama KNOWS we need to invade, but he doesn't want to do that because of things he has promised the American people, so instead he hesitates... and while he hesitates - the IS takes advantage. They've grown rapidly in the past year – there were people who begged Nato a year ago to do something about Syria and the IS, but they were shut down.. and now look how far the IS has come since a year ago... It doesn't matter how much money, power and soldiers you have - if you don't have a plan and leadership...and we do NOT have that.. We're disorganized.. and IS is extremely organized, forceful and powerful.
middle east wants nothing to do with the west. So quarantine them to there own country. No one gets in or out. As for these middle east people who now call the west there home. If they fu3k around at all they should risk deportation and just to back that up there familys go back to there country of orgin as well.
Stupid religion....the day when religion is a ancient idea that's when the world will be pure.
People time to wake up to the new millenium....religion is manmade.
In your opinion. However, most of the world would disagree. But to your point, I find it difficult labeling Islam as a 'religion' as it seems to cause discord, suppression, and death wherever it exists.
I wish CNN and the other major media outlets would cease and desist from taking on the role of Ministry of Information for these lunatics in ISIL. They do this stuff so that it will be splashed all over the web, our newspaper pages, and our tv screens. And you bite the bait and do exactly what they want you to do.
Please think about what you're doing, aside from increasing circulation or audience share.
It's a newsworthy event and CNN is a *gasp* News network!
Would you prefer naive placations about how the world is fine and dandy and not burning down around us? Perhaps a news site that consists only of videos of cute puppies and kitties and feel-good stories?
The cold, hard truth is airstrikes alone will not uproot ISIS. The only way to severely disrupt this group is through a massive operation involving several Western nations. It will have to be an extensive air and ground campaign. Not only are we facing ISIS, we are facing thousands of people that "enable" ISIS. The longer ISIS is allowed to exist, the more followers they will gain and threaten the West.
Finally someone who "gets it".. Thanks for the thorough comment, C-Dubya.. I agree.
I've got a 2 word solution..... Hiroshima & Nagasaki and the hell with the rest of them
That's more than two words, but I'm on board regardless.
Arabs are the bane of humanity, a genetically stunted people who have only ever caused death and destruction in their entire history.
Right On Dave! Lets do it NOW!
Sophisticated or not...we better hurry...our journalists are running out of heads...
head for the hills if you live in a major city.
ISIS....better start preparing your holes to hide in. Your going to be located and your going to finally be a martyr! Get ready to meet the virgins of your fantasies
You don't need to have a huge, long planned out strategy to inflict damage on them. Send in a wave of bombers and take out their targets in Iraq. Not too complicated to figure that one out. Destroy every ISIS target, convoy you can from the air, That will cause discord, confusion in their structure, and they will back off to regroup , immediately alleviating the horrors. There. how much of a strategy do you need for that??
Well, you see, SOME people get all up in arms about civilian death tolls in a war.
You want my opinion, bomb away. There's no such thing as an innocent Arab.
Condolences to the Sotloff family. We learned today that Obama has been receiving daily briefs on ISIS for over a year and yet has no plan.
Why is everyone wondering how ISIS got so sophisticated and organized? ISIS works on their mission 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. All of their thoughts, all of their efforts, all of their time is focused on their goals and that breeds success. They aren't sitting around thinking "now did I pay that bill, or oh, I forgot to purchase my OBAMA care, now I will be penalized, or I don't have enough money for the kids lunches, or do we have enough tuition money for our kids college, or if I get laid off at work I will be in the streets one week later....should I go on?
Imagine what a few tactical nukes would do for ISIS recruitment! permanent print tats for the mist ardent scarf sporting terrorist. They wouldn't have to take away they passports they would be seared into their asses, And what with the ladies swooning over the Tikrit dueling scar her favorite jihadist would be gifted with. You want to get real! let this countries armed service people take off the velvet gloves and run a war military style. Take the politicians out of the equation and unleash 21st century hell on these terrorist sand monkeys. I guarantee you that for the next 500 years these pathetic excuses for humanity would hush their children with, "hush the Americans are coming." It would also provide all the argumentative armchair strategists enough philosophical bun fodder to chew on for at least one more opinion.
Amen. Start in Baghdad and don't stop until you reach the other side of Damascus, leveling every city, town, village, and outhouse on the way. Leave nothing standing, then see if the Arab ever wants to start up again.
So many people commenting here about air power doing the job alone. Laughable. Whether or not any one cares to admit it, including our President, boots on the ground are going to be needed. Your not going to exterminate this threat with out them.
And ISIS is not the only group, there needs to be a global response, not just a US one, and militarily, forget diplomacy, it only sends a message of weakness. It's time to clean house, from HAMAS, Hezbollah to Al Qaeda and ISIS. The time to strike these groups in full force with a global force is now, in multiple locations around the globe. In short, it's time to take the gloves off. It's a dirty job and hands are going to get dirty doing it but it needs to be done for future security for many.
You're right. Air power alone won't do it. That's why air power is supporting Kurdish ground troops.
That being said, I believe that multiple mushroom clouds is a much better solution to the Arab menace.
Invention of Islam:
Ouch you done a great job. It takes 2 months before doing something you and the scrap Irak gopuvernement to help the town who have been asieged ,A lot of children heve died because they have nothing to drink.Felicitations.
I've watched every singe ISIS video release. The only deaths, murders, or executions they edited out of videos in hours of propaganda footage are the two US citizens they "killed". So, it's total bunk. I've watched ISIS murder, behead, mass kill, suicide bomb, machine gun passenger cars of innocent civilians. I've watched them behead countless people in the propaganda videos. These two "beheaded" American citizens videos were edited by ISIS, it fades to black both times before there's any blood. There are the ONLY TWO cases of any ISIS video this happens in.
ISIS is the new boogieman to be used to take away the rights and freedoms of US citizens. Don't worry, you will lose when they his the Fatherland, I mean Motherland, I mean Homeland.
The terrorists are too scared to show their faces while they murder these men. COWARDS. The lot of them. I hope they all meet the same fate as those poor people they have butchered.
The time has come to fight this war like we intend to win it. That does NOT mean lobbing dozens of laser guided bombs or cruise missiles at $125,000 a pop at the enemy. Back in the days of the Cold War, the US began building the ultimate anti personel weapon. A tactical thermonuclear warhead that expended a large part of its energy as a shower of high energy neutrons. It was officially referred to as the "enhanced radiation warhead" but you probably remember it as the "neutron bomb." These low to sub-kiloton weapons were designed to produce minimal blast damage and virtually zero persistent radioactive fallout. What they DID do was to lay down a shower of very high energy neutrons that would immediately disable ground troops with a severe (read fatal) dose of neutron radiation. This bomb would produce such a powerful shower of neutrons, that it would tear apart the DNA in virtually every cell of the enemy solder's body. Depending on the actual distance from the detonation, the affected personel would suffer everything from vomiting and diarrhea, to brain swelling and cardiac arrest. Within 8 to 48 hours, all affected troops would die in utter agony. Most would likely be praying to Allah to grant them death after spending a day or two vomiting out their own teeth.
The last time nuclear weapons were deployed, it was to utterly demoralize a fanatical enemy that intended to fight to the last man killing thousands of Americans. We are once again facing this same kind of fanatical enemy. Thanks to 50 years of nuclear weapons research and development, the bombs I am recommending would produce far, FAR less collateral damage, while electively neutralizing all ISIS troops including those protected by armor. There would be virtually ZERO long term radioactive fallout. We will have destroyed the Islamic Caliphate once and for all. Additionally no one will ever question America's willingness to utterly crush those who would harm its citizens. If the nuclear threshold is again to be crossed, let it be to destroy the most evil force that exists in the modern world!
ISIS is mossad/Washington Created.
Google: Operation Hornet's Nest. Or Elliot Shimon aka Simon Elliot.
how about reading a fact filled news paper and you will find ISIS or ISIL is very real and is NOT Washington created talk about the poorly educated!
What about America's own poorly educated, heavily armed, religious fundamentalists?
Obama needs to step aside and let Joe Biden take over. We can't have a person in the White House who can't do their job.
ISIS/ISIL is a bunch of uneducated, heavily armed religious fundamentalist's......Who know absolutely nothing of what they are doing...Do they really think murdering journalists is going to stop the US from bombing them? They should know by now it's not! And again they will behead someone else, stupid is as stupid does. The group doesn't care what anyone thinks it will murder and maim anyone in their path. They obviously don't realize they are murdering journalist's who could in a sense help them spread their BS.....
Why are Democrats and Republicans promoting the same Propaganda across all major news networks?
Is there an alternative to these identical parties in 2016?
President Obama said that ISIS has "failed." He should have said that our CIA has failed as well. It would be a simple matter to "neutralize" ISIS by finding and eliminating their funding sources. If our intelligence people concentrated on finding those funding sources and eliminating them, ISIS would quickly dissolve into a bunch of angry bullies driving around in pickup trucks (that would quickly run out of gas).
The really sad part is that ISIS didn't spring up overnight. The CIA should have addressed this problem during ISIS' developmental stage. As they say, you don't kill a snake by cutting off its tail. You cut off its head. And its even better to cut off the head before it develops fangs to bite with.
Bottom line? The CIA has been "asleep at the switch" for a long long time. And it's high time for the President to do whatever is necessary to return competent intelligence gathering to that agency – and let them "take their gloves off" in dealing with this menace.
It again appears the administration is caught unaware of world happenings. I fail to understand why no one is ever held accountable for the oversights, missed indications of a problem and at time down right lies. History will not speak well of this time in America.
You people in this country who may disagree with the President on some issues but on this one you need to stand by the President of the United States. Why? because it's for your best interest if these groups are killers plain and simple, doesn't matter if your a republican or democrat, they have to be stopped. Stop pointing fingers and get behind the United States..the minute God forbid they blow something else up in the country you'll be saying go get em.
It basically sounds like we are screwed. We need to attack this ISIS organization. We need to set up a plan like we did when we killed Adum Hussian. It sounds like 9/11 all over again. Obama needs to get up off his butt and do something about these 2 killings. I know we don't negotiate with terrorists. But if there beheading our people on television then we need to step in and mess them up.
First, Admit that toppling Saddam was wrong, you idiots.
Rob – Toppling Saddam wasn't wrong. The "wrong" part was the method President Bush used to do it – with WMD lies and half-truths. Instead of sending Colin Powell to the UN to tell these lies and half-truths, Bush should have sent him to rub a few real truths in the faces of the UN. Prior to our invasion, a French human-rights organization published a detailed report on the atrocities Saddam committed against his own people. Inaction by the UN against these atrocities would have been enough to get a consensus borne out of shame for not doing anything about it. And even if the UN Security Council didn't support action, Bush could have created a far wider coalition to move against Saddam. This coalition would likely have included the French – unless they disputed the findings of their own human-rights group that published the report on Saddam's atrocities (unlikely).
