New Russia sanctions to be ‘deeper and more significant’

September 4th, 2014
02:38 PM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

A new round of Western sanctions against Russia, yet to be approved, will “be deeper and more significant” than those already on the books, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday.

The sanctions being discussed are “fairly substantial measures that are going to have fairly substantial impact on critical sectors of the Russian economy.”

Bildt would not go into further details about the measures, because they are still under discussion.

He spoke with Amanpour from Wales, where NATO is holding what is likely its most significant meeting since the end of the Cold War.

The military alliance is getting back to its roots – collective defense – as the West grapples with how to deal with a Russian intrusion into Ukraine and ISIS radical militants.

“We are trying to understand what can be done in order to stop the Russians,” Bildt said.

Sweden is not a NATO member, but in the wake of Russia’s intrusion into Ukraine is expanding its cooperation with NATO.

Russian President Vladimir Putin “is looking for splitting the European Union, splitting the Western alliance, if he can.”

In an interview with Amanpour last week, the Ukrainian charge d'affaires in London indicated that it was only through unanimity of the international community that the global order could be maintained.

“It has taken time for everyone to wake up to what is happening,” Bildt said. I think things have changed lately.”

“MH17 was clearly something that changed the picture for a lot of countries. And subsequently what we’ve seen during the past few weeks is that Russia has been inserting regular Russian forces into Ukraine.”

“I think that has been a wake-up call, and I think we now see in terms of the discussion inside the European Union, for example, a much stronger response than was the case earlier.”

Thursday brought the prospect of a cease fire in eastern Ukraine, based on a peace proposal put forward by President Putin.

Bildt said that while such a deal would be positive in that it would halt hostilities, it was certainly not a solution to the conflict.

“There are two critical components missing from his seven points. First, there is no withdrawal of Russian forces.”

“And secondly, there is no Ukrainian control of its borders, while as you say he is demanding withdrawal of Ukrainian troops inside Ukraine, but he wants to retain Russian forces in Ukraine.”

Almost 1 mil refugees fleeing into Russia from Ukraine. In Kosovo this was called ethnic cleansing, here the white house says they are "visiting relatives".

Ukrainian troops fleeing to Russia from rebel encirclement are receiving medical aid after crossing the border and are given safe passage.

Invisible "Russian tank columns" surround Donetsk and Lugansk, cities with millions of people, but no one has a single confirmation.

Ukrainian volunteer battalion commander names divisions and regiments that do not exist while describing Russian forces.

No information on MH17 after it is finished being used for anti-Russian propaganda.

Sniper incident that led to an elected president being toppled and 88 people dead is not being investigated after video being leaked of EU officials admitting that it might have been a false flag op.

You yourself decide if you are content with being lied to.

i think we can all see that russia signed an agreement with ukraine to respect it's border , then Putin took Crimea so the promise was deemed no longer valid one sided.

There are no tank factories in operation in eastern ukraine yet we see them so we can all believe the magicly came into existance or just deduct logically that they came from russia.

The leaders of the seperatist that recently retired was russian and has been present in other hot zones we can assume he suddenly felt the urge to defend his fellow russian speaking ukrainians or deduct logically that russia was behind it.

yes russia sended back those soldiers and the same has happened to the russian soldiers that entered ukraine by accident.

Seperatist shooting down planes , the ukrainians none not even russian jets crossing the border (by accident offcource.. (not?)) then there is an civilian plane shot down but yeah that must have been the ukrainians i don't think so based on what has transpired sofar.

Images posted by nato proving russia has crossed borders are set as falsified by default that's why you don't see anything posted about mh17 doing so before everything is investigated and proven would be dealt in the same matter by russia aka they either state the report is falsified or just badly invesitigated.

see there is an 'uprising' but most captives are born in russia, besides an couple of criminals hoping to benefit from the chaos, while russia helds ukraine hostage by taking over border patrols and driving the ukrainians away from them.

everyone could see the former president lived in luxury there is proof that the former president had transferred tax money for personal use abroad and it was a lot more then 100 million euro's, when the people found out he feared for his life and fled to russia , he also against the will of the mayority cancelled to join the EU instead he reached out to russia.

They removed him from power, also almost all democracies in the west have some political parties that are (extreme) right wing yes 8 sector in kiev is extreme but they represent as the pvv party in the netherlands vlaams belang in belgium a significant but minority amount in their countries while Moscow tries to convince it's public that most of the ukrainian military is 8 sector which is not true.

the seperatist where driven back 2 weeks ago , suddenly they can stop and even push back the ukrainian forces so youself decide if your content to believe the fairy tales coming from moscow.

I think that the whole Western World now recognizes Putin as a demanding dictator and a habitual liar. Liar's begin to believe their own lies when told often enough. Putin dared to challenge the West with his superior nuclear weapons. What Putin doesn't understand is that one nuclear weapon launched will turn his beloved country into a wasteland! Mutual destruction capabilities were the backbone of the Cold War. Most of these weapons still exist. First to attack, first to be destroyed! Putin's "peace proposals" demands the withdrawal of Ukraine's forces from their own territory. Yet Putin is not obligated to withdraw all his "non-Russian" Russian fighters operating on Ukraine soil armed very heavily with Russian supplied weapons and heavy equipment. This makes no sense at all!

Vladimir Putin is the Russian leader taking care for the Russian people being killed in Ukraina. You want him to give up and leave his compatriots abandoned facing the nazis aggressors? His role is political and humanitarian only. He does not need the war.

Let me remind you of the war in Iraq and what was the cause for the intervention, who persuaded Saddam to invade Kuwait. ..who created ASIS, Taliban...who encourages destruction of national states in Europe, radicalization of Islamic movements?

Open your eyes and see the real dangers to the European civilization being turned into Sodom and Gomorrah where everything is measured in money only. Someone greedy and vicious is really trying to drag the world into the last world war. The real agressor is using you, me, the Russians and Ukrainians in their interests. Who is putting more and more military bases in Europe? Why?

So let's see..... If we "sanctioned". Gang members, murderers, criminals, etc. from buying guns, then that problem would be taken care of. And then if we also sanctioned them from receiving finances, or dealing and trading in guns, etc. , then that would stop too. There would be no way at all for them to get weapons and commit crimes at all! Yeah..... That works. You idiot fools

There will come a time when these evil propaganda networks, their masters and their reporters will allso be held accountable for the death and destruction that they helped to promote. Amanpour, do you think that, 10 years down the line you will excuse yourself again by interviewing 2 journalists like you did with Sadams WMD and say you didn't know about their information. If half of those idiots present at the Nato meeting had the capacity to be leading their countries like Putin, we would not be having all these disasters at play currently. My advice to You, Rusmussen and all your masters would be to take your proofs of thousands of Russian troops and air it at the U.N. for the whole world to see. Allso look at the foottage of Ghaddafi's murder and realise that it might be your fates as well, the day the sheeple awakens and realises what your lies has brought upon them. Don't worry you will see the lynchmops from afar, even at night, as chances are they will be glowing in the dark with their bodies covered in radiation sores.

Obviously sanctions are imposed on Russia not on the Kiev regime which came to power as a result of the armed plot. In Ukraina we see a civil war started by the plotters supported by the sponsors in the west top elite. President Poroshenko had to pursue the course of the military force against the Russian people voted in the referendum for their self determination of Donetsk and Lugansk included into Ukraina without any referendum. The people indignation was caused by the prohibition of the Russian language by the west Ukranian nationalists right after the plot in Kiev, repression by the Nazi armed units and killing of the Russian civilians in the East.

In Finland there are two officials languages where Sveeds are an absolute majority while in Ukraina 70% of people speak and think in Russian. Why Africans in Sudan have the right for self determination and Russians do not in Donbass? Why Kurds have autonomy, Scotts do too? Why Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium respect minorities, etc?. In Crimea there are three official languages – Tatar, Ukranian and Russian. Every Republic in Russia has two official languages, even Jewish people have their autonomy.

Why Turks occupy half of Cyprus cleansing Cyprus Christians and there are no sanctions? Look at the Famagusta cathedral in ruins.

Please impose more sanctions on Russia. It will make us even stronger and more decisive in our just struggle for our national interests. Russian is not a paper of a passport for us. It has a deep meaning we will defend by all means as the biggest devided European people.

The crisis in Ukraina will have bigger implications if Russians are repressed and shelled. We have to force the Kiev nationalists to stop the war and negotiate with the opposing party representing the Russian east. The ceasefire is a good start for it.

There is little hope for Russia, For centuries this vast frozen land has been ruled by brute force: the Csars, the Bolsheviks, the Communists, and now the post-Soviet "oligarchs". Democracy, liberalism, freedom and human-rights are foreign concepts to most Russians.

When you are dealing with shrimp leader who bears his naked chest to win public support – you can predict that civilized talk may not be the route to results.

Shrimps? What do you mean? Shave Conchita Vurst first.
Our President bears Cross on his chest and what do you? Snake? Better deal with fast food and booz and do not stick your sensitive trunk into our affairs. Many much stronger than you tried the Russian rocks but left defeated with their sharp teeth broken.

When our compatriots are bombed and their houses, schools, hospitals, coal mines and factories are destroyed by the armed to teeth nazzies the civilized talk is over. Vladimir Putin was not my choice but I respect him for his strong position to protect the Russian people and their right to live the way they want, speak their native language and have their choice. They did it at the referendum. They struggle for their future.

Those who do not like this choice can try their luck like Khan Mamay, Carl the Great, Napoleon, Sultans of Ottoman Khalifate and Nazi Hitler. They all tried hard but in vain. NOONE CAN DESTROY THE WILL AND THE SPIRIT OF THE WHOLE PEOPLE.

Speak for yourself but not our People please.

While EU and USA discuss further sanctions Russia is proceeding with their plan of annexation in Luhansk. They are distributing Russian passports and forcing people to take them. New Russian troops are lining their Tanks and other weapons up pointing on The Ukrainian control points there. This is all about Russia wanting to steal assets from Ukraine !
They did it against Yukos , They did it in chechnya because of the oil production. From Georgia Russia annexed the neighbour areas again because og oil and gas there. In Crimea was just found very promishing gas and oil and there is also in Azov See. Now Russia want to annex Donbass because of the shale where can be extracted gas and oil. But also because of Iron , coal, and other valuables. Russia is just like pirataes stealing from their weaker neighbours. Be ashamed Russia ! many greetings Jacob Schonberg, danish citizen living in Ukraine

After the second world war Russian and a few other countries continued their communism philosophy. The Soviet Union and these few countries became closed to the western world. Freedom of speech and other freedoms were curtailed. During that time, the West made friends and alliances with many countries while the Soviet Union remained closed to the rest of the western world perpetuating communism as oppose to capitalism. When the Soviet Union fell after 40 years, the USA and other western countries consolidated many alliances around the world. Today, Russia finds itself surrounded by western influence and military might. While Russia was closed for 40 years propagating communism, the West was expanding its power and influence. Mr. Putin must understand that Russia will always be second to the USA. All refugees or asylum seekers want to go to the USA and to the West. NOBODY WANTS TO GO TO RUSSIA OR THE OTHER BALTIC STATES !!! WHY ?????????????????????? NOBODY WANTS TO LIVE IN RUSSIA ??? Mr. Putin must finally realise that he can never regain that lost 40 years !!!!!!!!!!!!! THE WEST WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL !!!!!!! In 2017, it will be 100 years of the Russian revolution since 1917. Who knows ? There could be a second revolution in Russia. I AWAIT TOUGHER SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA !!!!!! BRING IT ON !!!!
