Christian’s look to Al Qaeda’s growing influence in Europe forced most viewers to contribute with bold opinions.  The tone of the commentary suggested self-reflection and implored a second look at the issues at hand.  Some described Al-Qaeda as an ideology that was getting stronger, while other preferred to see it as “fuel extremism, causing despair in the world.”  Please share your thoughts with us.

Below, you will see some opinions from viewers like yourself.  If you missed the show, or for more information on the full-length podcast @ http://cnn.com/amanpour

They just gave america a kicking in its largest military base on american soil (Fort Hood) and your 'experts' still think alqaeda is getting weaker.

This is a typical example of one of the biggest problems the west faces – the people its put incharge to counter alqaeda have no idea how alqaeda thinks/operates

Its like putting pixies incharge of understanding the ways/life of a giraffe. one of many examples to illustrate this point - in the west the word ideology/ idealogical is mostly considered a somewhat 'dirty word' with instinctive negative associations. with alqaeda this is one of the greatest attributes one can have. what is the consequence of not instinctively understanding this in attitude – when the western counter terrorism agencies develop de-radicalisation programmes with the intention of reducing extremism/radicalisation their programmes have the exact opposite affect on the extremist muslims. Instead of deradicalising them you piss them off even more and they become even more radical & extreme.

So the short answer to your question – is alqaeda stronger or weaker? Its stronger . The problem is guests on your show (the ones generally incharge of the western policy & programmes) have no idea of this and even worse they actually believe their own ideology that they are weakening alqaeda.

A clueless person can only relate to insubstantiality – don send him to understand/counter a genius.   Alqaeda is ultimatley & most importantly an ideology – the only way to defeat an ideology is from within using a bigger better ideology. right now you are not promoting one and alqaeda is.

I thought the virgins were really golden raisins...none of those for him, either.

Despair can fuel extremism. I believe that Hassan did act alone and the extremists are having a party with his action, just because he has a muslim name. However he is a soldier and an American who pledged allegiance to the flag, but I would like to express my point which I think could be somewhat similar to his, though I would never kill others.

If I read the current state of US "conscientious objector" practice correctly it's not at all certain they'd have let him off entirely, but maybe they'd have deployed him in a non-combatant role. But even if this route were clearly available to him, do you think he ever would have taken it?

How does it sound when a shrink loses his sanity having been influenced by the 'ideals' of a failed society? No virgins anywhere for murderers. The souls of the wasted are crying for revenge. Justice must prevail. I recommend the Arabian kind of death penalty.

Myanmar audiences've been interested in this news. Myanmar can know about it via B.B.C. and R.F.A.

FYI, the video podcast I got last night via iTunes was cut off at just past 9 minutes and now I'm unable to obtain it at all. Will it be updated?

I don't believe it for a second. I believe too there are more Hassan's in America sitting back, observing and concocting their sick, evil master plans just waiting to act violently and maliciously. And for what... in the name of their so called Gods which would also oppose their maladaptive beliefs and actions.

The Trap – bin Laden's quotes:
    1. Soviet Union. "We exhausted their economy so they disappeared"
    2. United States. "Al-Qaida can cause the US economy to collapse by implementing a "bleed-until-bankruptcy plan".

All media are talking about how many more troops are needed in Afghanistan. No one will ever know and neither will the best US General. Everyone, most Americans too, can understand the "bleed-until-bankruptcy plan". When the war started 8 years ago, the 2 fighting groups Ghilzai (Warlords) and Durrani (Karzai), who have been fighting for many hundered years were were poor, since then life is better. Karzai, police and army employees receive 50 to 150$/month. The Warlords receive 200 to $400 per truck they let through by the US taxpayers. The more troops that are sent, the more money they will make. That is the reason why no more troops should be sent and the US should pull out.

Last night I watched Christiane's interview of Victor Cha regarding the diplomatic conundrum that surrounds North Korea. While I thought the entire half-hour program did a decent job in discussing human rights, etc., Cha’s interview was a bit maddening.

While nothing he said was off the mark, what he did not say was almost infuriating. Everything he addressed was framed in getting the DPRK to return to the Six Party talks for nuclear disarmament so that North Korea could join the family of nations.

It was maddening in the sense that these days Cha must know that line is pure gibberish. It is obvious that Pyongyang desperately needs its nukes and the last thing the ruling oligarchy wishes is having its citizens intermingling with the rest of the world.

For the DPRK to become a normal nation would inevitably lead to the government’s fall - and possibly worse for the ruling elite. Cha knows that. The US State Department knows it.

So, given that no real change is likely to happen other than by the North Koreans themselves, I get the impression that professional diplomats carry on with the charade as to justify in part, or in whole, their roles in government.

The harsh reality is there is little they or anyone outside of North Korea can really do to effect substantial change. Claiming smoke-and-mirrors achievements, such as the destruction of the ageing cooling tower in Yongbyon, is not genuine diplomacy, but rather being willing to be played as yahoos at pea-and-shell games.

What really needs to be done is for all directly impacted governments to square off with reality and begin substantial preparation for the likely ensuing chaos from the DPRK’s eventual demise. The problem is, of course, no one has any idea how eminent or distant that time may be. But it is certain that none of North Korea’s neighbors are prepared other than by military precautions to keep the North Koreans at bay via guns, barbwire and guns.

South Korea has done inadequate preparation for an almost certain human tsunami and continues to do inadequate accommodation of North Korean refugees. The Chinese record is substantially worse and is worthy of global censure.

But one solution that may have long term benefits would be to increase aid to N Korean young people in South Korea so they may finish their college educations. All concerned nations need a body of educated people who understand both North Korea and the surrounding world. Today, there are precious few people who can do just that. And the one thing we do know is that someday such people will be in desperate demand. The point is it’s probably not too late to make sure these young people are able to complete their educations in South Korea.

But it seems easier and cheaper to focus on the Six Party Talks than deal with harsher realities. And so the band plays on...

Please STOP the automatic use of videos that start when opening a link, and are extremely annoying. I immediately pause them. Is CNN a news organization or a shill for selling products. I may switch to a different home page to avoid having this type of intrusion into my use of my computer.

    Thanks for removing them!!!!!!

Your video of an add from Burberry shows half-clad female models. It is extremely annoying that it keeps flipping through them while I'm trying to read a news article. I tried everything to flip it off but there was nothing available. I finally just left the news article unread. Very annoying!!

I've been watching CNN a bit more now that seems Fox News is just as biased as CNN. I can listen to both sides and make my own judgement. Let's have more of the violence the Anti fa and Black Lives Matter "fry the Pigs" types condemned as well. I can't believe Obama had them invited to the White house. Can you imagine Pres. Trump inviting KKK people to White house? How about Berkeley? In Portland the Libs were the ones to be violent during the Conservative demonstration. I'm against the anti Jew, anti black Nazi idiots in Charlottesville. They do have the right to demonstrate. Who started the violence there in Charlottesville? Did the left protesters block the way of the idiots? That was terrible about the car running into the protesters. We need a debate on national TV about race relations! I don't really don't think race relations is as bad as the left make it out to be. Obama started the hate for police when he reacted to Michael Brown before the facts were in calling the police "stupid" The police were cleared on that you know. There are many bigots out there but I think it's perpetuated by press and left which is empowered by it as an issue. There will always be bigots and discrimination. Let's talk about how far race relations have come instead of perpetuating it with Blacks not admitting that. No way it's worse like the Black leaders say.Being a white man myself I do feel there is an effort to attack us. That could be an issue to debate as well.

While G.H.W Bush being hospitalized must be considered news, you are boring the heck out of people with an hour of medical analysis. Please report the facts and move on. The nation is collapsing on many fronts and you're dwelling on the mundane details of one story. .
