The Canadian goverment has annonced some time ago his army will retire from Afghanistan in 2011. What is your comment on that?
Do you think the're doing the right thing?
I consider you the best news commentor in the world. Who knows better than you what's going on in the middle east. Do you agree that we'll never see real peace there unless the US condem the Israelis and force them to act seriously for realizing a Palestiniam State?
Their will be no reason to congratulate Mr. Karzai now and he knows that too, Afghanistan is faced constant act of terrorism on daily basis, the 0ver two thousand Afghan political office holders are looting the state funds at will and he knows he is been watched by all.
Could you elaborate on the future of America in Afghanistan? For how long they will be there? The importance of Pakistan in this regard and that of India? Can we learn something from the past, how the Russians acted when they were in Afghanistan?
I often see that American media complain a lot about Pakistan and always asks for more. I wonder how much control U.S and its allies has within Afghanistan provided the huge number of forces they have at the moment in Afghanistan. Could you elaborate on this? Another issue which i would like you to elaborate is how U.S will ensure the interests of Pakistan in Afghanistan as Pakistan is one of the main stakeholder as it is sharing long border with Afghanistan and have pushtoons on both sides? I am afraid that if U.S don't safeguard Pakistan interests in Afghanistan then how U.S is expecting cooperation from Pakistan and its people?
Frankly, I think the US, Nato, and all other allied forces have to re-examine their purpose and role in the region. Just have to read daily reports and you'll relized that they, practically, all center around foreign activities in the region. Where are the Afghans in all of these activities? There might be brief mention of President Kasai, Abdullah Abdullah, and even Mullah Omar, and a few others, and that’s all. What roles does the Afghan forces play? Who in particular in the current cabinet is accountable for what? What are their goals and how do you monitor their goals and etc..? Just take a look at how successful organizations are managed, try to fit the way the Afghan government and it’s departments are managed here, and you’ll find out why the coalition forces would find it difficult to securitize the region. The way things continue to go, the coalition forces will stay here for a long time, with no end in sight, with lots of money spend and lives lost!
Starting with the Afghan President (and could be anyone), what are his objectives, goals and deadlines for his people & country, for providing security to foreign people trying assisting in the development of the country, stamping out or at least contain corruption, controlling security, among many other things. He wants to be the CEO, where are his plans and actions to his stakeholders, i.e. his people and foreign support, coalition forces, his people and country? According to his people, no effective plans and actions so far. Frankly, I think the foreign forces are just taken on a ride!
Mind you, it’s not just him. There was something like 33 people wanting to be President during the August election. What are their track record for work done? Nothing! (At least according to the people). It shows how divided they are. In the re-election, it was down to two. Rather than letting the international community and UN take care of the balloting (which they did a lousy job the first time, with promise of better monitoring), the opposition decided to step down because none of his request for better management was met. By doing that, I hope he realized that he is also “robbing” the Afghan people of their democracy to decide which of the two they prefer. Win or loss, he should have taken the occasion to boost Afghan democracy and prepare his popularity for the next election. After all, President Karzai has, maximum, one more term. Accordingly, the Afghan people has no faith in any of their leaders. They seem to express that leadership will have to come from a different generation and they want to see that. I think the fear is in the next election, where a totally new President will have to be elected. Someone whom they have no idea off.
In the meantime, business just goes on as usual. When you notice that Afghans just appear to be flying “freely” between Kabul and Frankfurt, or Istanbul, or Dubai, or elsewhere, and people being so open, friendly, and hospitable, and students just going to school, you wonder whether the country is at war or a war where only the foreign people seems to be overwhelmingly involved.
In general, people have enough of the Talibans. However, show them a system that they can trust, especially in the South. Apply some the tactics that President Obama did with troubled companies like AIG, with the Afghan government and its cabinets. Management by objectives, especially with money pouring into the country. Work with the Afghan forces, especially the police and security forces, starting with good recruitment practices and profiling of currently employed people so as to root out suspects and build a more secure force. Train & develop, using foreign expertise, leaders to take charge of ministries, departments, sections, etc.. and make them accountable. Review their salary scales and realigned them. Let the respective ministries detail their plans that have to be SMART, reviewed these plans, and be approved by all stakeholders (US, Nato, etc..). Action and results, at all levels and all areas are what people and stakeholders what to see! Further, traceability of financial expenses, with perodic auditing, needs to be in place.
There is much to be said and do. I'll be pleased to eleborate this discussion further, when called upon.
