I was heartened by George Packer's (and your) claim that our western presence in Afghanistan is viewed differently by Afghani's than previous "occupiers." I was leaning against the decision to send more troops. I'm not allowing myself to be too disheartened because, for the first time since Kennedy, I believe in my President's integrity. I respect that he took time to contemplate–gaining input from the best sources–before making this latest decision. I want to believe that our renewed commitment there will empower the country and contribute to a future of improved relations between West and East. I believe this question is of concern to many Americans: What are the chances of reform in the Karzai government, and will there be enough reform to support Obama's best intensions?
