The U.S. mission in Afghanistan, explained by General Stanley McChrystal proved heart-felt to most viewers, who embraced this exchange and applauded Gen. McChrystal’s initiatives. In addition, there were minimal discussions reflecting the interview with Sudan’s ambassador to the U.N. and his claims of resistance toward participating in the international law.

Christiane God bless you!!! what a great interview!!!
Afghanistan and the United States are lucky to have a great General such as McChrystal serves humanity well.
Haven't we learned anything from History? Guess the "Resistance" during WWII is a component conveniently forgotten in history lessons. If it weren't Alqueda, Taliban would have been long a history of the Past.
How do you fight gang warfare with conventional warfare? Do you need to know how to wage war to figure that out?
The secret of success is constancy to purpose. Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. Making your mark in any area is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along... See More the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. it's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.
What a waste of human resource and what awaste of US taxpayers money, but Then what other choice is there?
with all respects... General McChrystal stating a whole view of the facts he sees in the battlefield...I respect how he shows a fair point of view...thanks.

Christiane...YOU are among the few true journalists left. I salute you & your team. it would be * so* awesome to meet yo some day.

Christiane : It is very difficult to elaborate perspectives on the conditions that have brought Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. He`s justified war as a means to achieve peace in the particular case of the U.S. as a result of 9/11. But look at the scenario in wich these campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, and tomorrow who knows in what other country may the U.S. be involved, and make an inventory , an honest one, to evaluate if there`s been a real definite objective and / or strategy in succeeding the establishing of a stable form of control in any of these occupied countries by the U. S. and its colaborating allies. Not yet after 8 long years and more than 5,000 casualties on the U.S. count alone. Obviously, the equation is not balancing here. The evaluation of he brass has not been consistent and accurate in dealing effectively to control an enemy with a tremendous advantage in territory and flexibility to hit with car bombs, in the face of U. S. occupation and inflict a high number of cassualties as it happened in Iraq a few days ago, in different locations. So, what has been the real advantage in these campaigns so far to control this elusive ghost of a enemy, i ask ? : 0 none. So, what makes Obama, and his top brass think that 3 or more years of "More Of the Same" (here the surge will make not much more difference) he will eventually control these warriors, who are in control of their land, and have proven unconquerable thrughout history. For the first time i disagree with Obama in his perspective on how to balance this equation. The U.S. has already achieved two key objectives : The Gulf War, and the removal of Saddam Husein in Iraq, but has failed to capture Bin Laden for 8 long years, and control the Taliban and Al Qaeda. So the balance`s still in the red, and will remain there even if O.B.L. is captured and executed, for there will be another martyr to fuel the Revolution to continue worldwide. So, where is the benefit of waging war here, for the U.S. and the world ??? How can you fight an ideal of more than 1,000 years wich has resisted successfully against all forms of invation. Who`s or what is really the obstacle here . I digress from Obama`s approach to this condition, altough i believe he still has the potential, after placing all these facts into an objective perspective to find an effective solution, before this conflict destroys his presidency, and any attempt for a new world order. Earn then the prize Mr. President, and bring peace to your home, and the world.
Chris : Last but not least`, i`m a true fan of yours, and the fantastic way you conduct your reports, interviews and bring focus into the Middle East Crisis, wich has escalated into a borderless crisis. Never in my wildest imagination i would have tought that simple, ordinary humble tribal people could have transform themselves into the dreadful and awesome headache to the international community they represent today. Maybe there`s a lesson here between the lines still to be learned by the western world, but it is still to stubborn to digest. I still hope people like me and you may help shed some ligth into this mess
and that at the end of each day, we may contribue to create a chance for peace. Great Work, and congratulations Chris.
Best wishes,
Alberto.
I have asked many tv reporters why the U.S, does not attempt a real effort to cut off military aid Guns, ammo, etc, etc., in its effort to defeat the Taliban????
Obviously some foreign state is supplying them with weapons, as the
Taliban can not possibly manufacture their own weapons!!!
Think about it!!!!
I agree with Mike. There`s someone out there who either simphatyzes with the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and is making good business in the sale of weapons, or both. Any intelligence on who the supplier, or suppliers may be ??? These conditions have always been a part of conflicts before. The U.S. has supported the Contras in Nicaragua, and the Afghans during the Soviet invation of their territories, but this is a world wide conflict now that needs intelligence at work to define futher action to be taken in all areas : diplomacy, military, and intelligence. It is the obligation of the international community to contribute within all these areas mentioned before to maintain efforts to help curb this crisis, and hopefully in the end find a solution to it.
Dear Amanpour: Top generals and experts agree: The Taliban controls over 80% of Afghanistan; this is common knowledge; yet you asked McCrystal, "What if the Taliban regain control of Afghanistan?"
I think Amanpour doesn't have a clue about what's going on in Afghanistan. She needs to meet with CNN's Michael Ware, who said the U.S. lost the War in Afghanistan years ago.
Truly unnecessary, unconstitutional U.S. military action. Our U.S. military is little more than targets and force protection for the private contractors; there would be no corporations profiteering in Afghanistan, if it weren't for the U.S. military providing security for those contractors. Obama sent more contractors than troops this time.
Unbelievable.
According to the U.S. media, it's everything BUT U.S. support, funding and arming of Israel's illegal four decade(s+) long military occupation of the Palestinian territories that's fueling Islamic terrorism against America.
According to the U.S. media, it's everything BUT U.S. military occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan that's fueling Islamic terrorism against America.
When it comes to the bogus prosecuting the "War On Terror," Obama's war policy is more of the same – Bush Doctrine.
The bottom line is, as long as our Congress funds and arms these unnecessary military occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and continue funding (billions) Israel's illegal 44-yr. long military occupation of the Palestinian territories, that's how long America will continue to be the target of Islamic terrorism.
Americans need to ask themselves: Is it worth it? Is it legal? Is it constitutional? Clearly, the answer is NO WAY!
BRING ALL THE TROOPS HOME NOW!
Unfortunately, any 12-yr. old armed with a small box of ole, shoeworn neocon talking points left over from the Bush admin, can bring any so-called anti-war politician (including Obama) to their knees:
"Who do you want to win the War On Terror? al Qaeda or America?"
"Where do you want to fight the terrorists? Over here or over there?"
"The best way to fight terrorism is to hunt'em down, smoke'em out and kill'em all."
In order to believe in the War On Terror, one must believe that the Islamic world, including Islamic terrorists, have no legitimate complaint(s) against the U.S. and Israeli guvmints, and are to be exterminated at each and every turn.
Pro-war politicians and pundits merrily repeat the Evil Lie that no matter what America does, Islamic terrorists will always seek to destroy America BECAUSE it's part of their religion.
I agree with both Amanpour and McChrystal that longterm strategy and consistency is necessary to move the momentum of this war in the US and Alias favor, in specific the area of establishing security to obtain legitimate Afghan governance. This concept of preventing the Taliban from accessing the population and to approach this war from the civilian standpoint, with an emphasis on local population and that only they will determine who wins or loses this war, is a very evolved and sophisticated standpoint that we have not seen from the US military previously. This new standpoint seems to also emphasize the Afghan government. This narrowing of strategy for Afghan surge seems to just allow for the security and opportunity of the Afghan government to extend its “governance.” It also seems that the US is only providing the “time and space” the Afghan government needs to access to its own population, in order to do its own “nation building.” I think this is inline with US interests, that nation building is vital, yet is ultimately an Afghan responsibility. I think this belief stems from within the Afghan people, so that their own government can gain a sense of credence and credibility. It is interesting that the Obama administration has seemed to be gradually redefining what success and defeat is in the war against the Taliban. Again, I quote Gen. McChrystal that when it comes to nation building, “It must be a process enabled, not a product delivered.” Well done, Christiane.
Nation Magazine conducted an investigation that showed that U.S. tax dollars were going to U.S. contractors who then gave the Taliban money so that the Taliban wouldn't attack shipments of U.S. goods to U.S troops.
U.S. troops would then use those resources to attack the Taliban.

Why didn't Amanpour ask Gen. McChrystal about the issues I posted above?
Commenters on this blog praise Amanpour for her McChrystal interview in lieu of questions a person who conducted 15 minutes of research would have asked McChrystal.
At least Amanpour asked McChrystal about the less than 100 al Qaeda in Afghanistan.
This whole things is nothing but the failure to dismantle ISI after the SOVIET exist from Afgan. Hope at the end of this war, they will not repeat the same mistake. Dismantle the ISI and make sure that all the current ISI staffs are taken care by offering a retirement, like how the Japanese army was dismantled after the Second world war. Hope the General and the white house, are listening otherwise there wont be peace after the war !!!
