I am a Nigerian and recent events doesn't reflect the ideas and beliefs of over 140m Nigerians living there & over 1m abroad. We do have problems at home but Nigeria is not a terrorist nation!

Yes indeed, the bombing is bringing negative attention to Nigeria and her people. Decent, honest and law-abiding Nigerian will now be profiled and harassed while traveling to the US.

A nice question to the US government: Do they think adding certain countries on the their so-called list helps reduce terrorism? Better add all the countries on planet earth or remove them all, because any brainwashed individual from anywhere can be a walking bomb.

What happens to people from countries on the list who also have dual-citizenship and can fly with their other passport without visas? Seems that this one is going to back-fire big time!

I think its important that all nations worldwide unite in the fight against global terrorism by improving security at national borders etc
I am not so sure that this indirect form of religious/country profiling is going to help or the way forward. It simply means that would be terrorists from non listed countries potentially with dual nationality ie the US, UK may go unchecked or will avoid more rigorous checks. Please lets not forget the shoe bomber richard reid and other would bes who were nationals of western countries who are also harbingers of terror and destruction.

The attention currently received is of course going to deter foreign investments, etc which would have otherwise come to Nigeria but we have to move forward and find a way to work together not by alienating countries and putting them on lists.

I think the recent move by the US to include Nigeria on the 'countries of interest' list is highly discriminating. It is known that some countries in Europe like the UK and Germany have had individuals who are terrorist and still may have, so why are those countries not on their watch list? Some Americans too have become terrorist during this decade and I must say countries should include the United States in their own list making them to pass through embarrasing public search.

Of course it is necessary that security be taken to the next level, but not like that being shown to Nigerians because of one man who was neither radicalised in Nigeria, nor trained in Nigeria. Before a country is included in the watch list their must consistency of terror actions and other indicators.

The US have interest in NIgeria but none has ever been attacked.

I am a nigerian-american and a muslim. It is quite unfortunate that a nigerian will try to blow up an airplane. We all know that the struggles of the terrorists in the middle east isn't about religion but politics. Why would a nigerian delve into the affairs of the middle easterners. Let's call a spade a spade. The US have every right to put nigerians on the terror watch list because of what the nigerian did.

Just to let the whole world know that Nigeria does not have any terrorist tendency. US should please remove Nigeria from the list of terrorist countries. We are peace loving people of God.

Estimation,Understanding and Action have always been 3 different concepts. and as a result I remain singular in my belief that the best breed of the human race are born and bred in Nigeria.
There over 160 million people in our great country and of all the teeming mass of survivors and combatant, and one young overfed Nigerian decides to blow up a plane full of humans. it would be inhuman to decide that he was right in his actions but it would also be unwarranted and unmerited to judge a whole country based on this singular acts.
The American Government has decided to play God and label us all terrorist, and i find that totally laughable. Ted Bundy, jeffery Dahmer and Ed Gein are all famous serial killer unquestionably the product of the american dream...lol...Not to mention the mall shooters and the various publicly approved racist groups in america.yet america feel it has the moral background to label us terrorists.
But to cut back on all the finger pointing and state the views of the Nigerian common man would be to codemn the acts of mutallab in their entirety and point out the fact Nigerians are peace loving people..

Found this online from a Nigerian blogger: http://chippla.blogspot.com/2009/12/international-nigerian-terrorist.html

"Nigerians can expect more stringent security searches at airports worldwide. Such profiling is a logical reaction to an event like this. Unfortunately, increased security on Nigerian travellers could allow for more deadly non-Nigerian targets slip through airports worldwide. Most Nigerians couldn't care less about al-Qaeda and the message it preaches. al-Qaeda would likely find some sympathy amongst a fraction of Nigerian Muslims, but it is highly in doubt if that fraction is the majority.

The botched attack on Northwest Airlines Flight 235 has everything to do with a radical Islamic ideology promulgated by extremist groups like al-Qaeda. This is the point that must be emphasized. al-Qaeda’s ideologies could find sympathizers in your family, your neighborhood or your workplace. It is not ethnic, region or class specific. Though largely concentrated in the Middle East, it is becoming global"

it is not very strange that a nigerian made an attempt to bomb a plane.
the ideas of the muslims in nigeria is very much unpredictable. they have tendencies of killing for unjustifiable reasons. muslims in nigeria do worse things. you can immagine that you can not live in northen nigeria with peace at heart, but they are always accomodated in other parts of the country. they are always looking for an opportunity to to kill in the name of allah.

I find it fascinating that based on one individual's attempted attack a whole country is now put under scrutiny. With this same logic: every child going into a school in the United States should be seriously frisked for guns; every New York citizen (as the famous Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh was) should be screened before entry into a United States Federal Government building.

The mistake America continues to make is forcing nationalities unto the face of terrorism (and when the urge arises even invading these nations). Why is Saudi Arabia not on this list then seeing as Osama bin Laden himself is from Saudi Arabia? I wonder. An increased level of security should be absolute and not limited. Limiting it is the mistake as I would imagine terrorists aren't going to sit still because their nationality will be scrutinized more deeply. They will find a way to move beyond nationality alone, and they have. Putting certain countries on a list just stinks of following the leads the terrorists give you as opposed to being steps ahead.

Terrorism is a threat to the whole world by certain individuals all over the world. A lot of innocent Muslims, Christians, Afghans, Americans and many other nationals including dare I say it even Nigerians have died as a result of acts of terrorism.

    Hello Christiane,

It brings necessary attention to Nigeria. Maybe with this, things will start to change for the better.

There have been so many questions asked about the bomber etc. Haven't the public thought of asking the question why they have not heard from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The country right now is running without its President, Nobody is in charge. We last new he was heading for Saudi Arabia for medical treatment since 44 days ago, and we have not receive words about his whereabout. What we get is complete silence from him.

Maybe the press can check on him. We want to know if he still alive or dead or not returning back to the country. Or is he attending Arabic school in Saudi? So many questions that need answers. But getting the answers from the government in Nigeria has been fruitless. I don't blame them, they also don't know where he is.

Before the world begins to send aids or military to calm the situation that might arise from his absence, its better the world help search for the President of Nigeria.

I am a Nigerian musician born and raised in The Bronx, New York.. Lived In Nigeria for five good years of my life. It saddens me that a senseless individual can be the face of a country who has over 250 ethnic groups and a coastline stretching over 800 miles. Nigeria presents a mixture of traditions, a land of remarkable opportunities and warm, friendly people. Nigeria is a nation where Christians, Muslims and traditional animists have co-existed for years. All groups of people have their languages, histories, and religions all rubbing shoulder to shoulder in this hectic, colourful and often volatile republic. One Of My Goals In Life is to better my country..... I Luv My Country...

    MUTALLAB'S FATHER SHOULD BE HONOURED

    Dear Amanpour.
I had a dream, a dream of Obama praising the Father of the Nigerian Christmas day bomber.for passing information to US intelligence on his son' suspicious movement to Yemen about two weeks before the boy tried to blow up the Detroit bound plane.

The action of the father has never happened in the history of the fight against terrorism. Honouring the father is just fair and will encourage others to do same, since all sucide bombers have parents, and not all parents support Al-Qaida or terrorism..

Publically, honour the man who literally said, look US, I suspect my boy of working for Al-Qaida. Monitor, catch and deal with him if my suspicion is correct.

Amanpour, please tell President Obama to honour the Father and reconsider placing Nigeria on terror list, as there are other fathers in Nigeria who would be encouraged to follow the example of Mutallab's father.

    Thank you

I am a Nigerian and I am very very angry and disappointed with the attorney general of Nigeria Michael Aondoakaa for saying Nigeria is in a stable condition. Is he a sick man living on another planet? well, Nigerians are not stupid at all and it is very strange for the president to disappear.

I am calling on all Nigerians at home and in diaspora to stand up and fight against the mad, currupt, ilegal and murderous leading party whose main aim is to distabilise Nigeria.

I don't have a webcam, but I've got 122,000 members on a Facebook group I created just on the 27th of Dec, and counting, denouncing the younger Abdulmutallab's greatly unNigerian action on Christmas day, 2009; and currently asking the US 2 get us off dat undeserved list of countries of interest in terror.

I feel Nigeria and Nigerians need to concentrate on making the country better. I know people are desperate for Change in Nigeria, but people have to be willing AND ready to make the sacrifice to make the country a better place. I believe Nigerians are not terrorists but then what about the terror thats going on in the country with the Jos riots, Boko Haram, extra-judicial killings by the police etc. Why arent Nigerians up in arms against this sort of thing???? Lets wake up people. Charity begins at home. And i am a Nigerian

Hello,Christine. People still don't understand Nigeria, particularly the North. Northern Nigeria has always gotten a negative attention. Negative news about Northern Nigeria spreads fast like wild fire, while the positive one's are seldom reported.
Nigeria is not a "terrorist nation",but of course we have our own problems, which every country in the world have. Political crises, religious and ethnic instability, illiteracy, corruption,419,intolerance,......,many more. After all this existing problems,a young man, from no where added to our CV,"terrorism". Lord of mercy,we are doomed! We were all shocked(both muslims and christians). Why us? Why not another country? Like an irreversible reaction, there's nothing we can do about it.
The majority of Nigerians are peaceful human beings, but of course we have some bad eggs, who inflame situation with there malevolent thinking mind. I hope the US will reconsider its position.
Long live the Federal Republic Of Nigeria.

Is that the US's lost the plot or what? it is a simple logic because Farouk was nt radicalised in Nigeria but in the UK. Why dont they put pressure on the UK to deal with exterem islamic teachings in the country why put Nigeria on the list?
Why should Nigeria be tagged? If nt for the brave actions of the passenger on the plane who tackled the situation lots of people would have died & y is it that US did not act on the information given to them in the 1st place? How did he get on the plane? Nigeria should not be blamed for the failures of the US & the UK. SHAME ON THE US & the UK i think the US and UK shoud accept the responsibility of what happened and leave Nigeria out of it. NIGERIANS ARE NOT TERRORIST.
