AMANPOUR. today will again focus on the frustrated efforts to distribute aid in Haiti. We turn to the U.N. relief officials on the ground in Port- au-Prince responsible for coordinating distribution and logistics. Why is the flow of aid still at a trickle – one full week later?  And we continue to look at the global challenges facing U.S. President Barack Obama as he enters his second year in office. How has the world changed since his outreach to the Muslim World? Now here are some perspectives on some of the day’s top news stories.

Tom Evans
Sr. Writer, AMANPOUR.

HAITI – Who’s in charge of the relief effort one week after the devastating earthquake?

–         Charity Medecins San Frontieres says hundreds of lives are being put at risk as planes carrying vital medical supplies are turned away from Haiti because of congestion at airport

–         French government minister involved in scuffle with U.S. military officer in airport control tower and afterwards says, “This is about helping Haiti, not occupying it”

–         U.S. military says congestion and distribution problems are easing, even as it sends a cargo plane to Haiti to airdrop bottled water and food to victims for the first time

QUESTION: How soon before the harbor in Port-au-Prince will be reopened so supplies can be brought in by ship?
GOOGLE – Is the internet company’s showdown with China escalating?

–         Google postpones planned launched of new “Android” mobile phones in China

–         Decision comes amid a dispute between Google and China over censorship and email hacking. Google says dispute could force it to leave China

–         Chinese foreign ministry says Google must obey country’s laws and traditions, a sign perhaps that government is refusing to seek a compromise in this dispute

QUESTION: Why is Google taking such a strong stand in this dispute now? Is there more to this than meets the eye? Is Google worried about the potential or actual theft of its intellectual property in China?

AFGHANISTAN – How secure is Kabul after yesterday’s brazen insurgent attack?

–         Afghan forces tighten security day after bold Taliban attack that left 12 people dead, including seven insurgents

–         Afghan forces and their NATO advisers took nearly five hours to root out the insurgents during Monday’s raid

–         Some see attack as a propaganda coup for Taliban, demonstrating it can strike in capital even as U.S. and NATO send 37,000 additional troops to Afghanistan

QUESTION:  Can the Afghan government defend the most heavily populated areas of Afghanistan and secure the population as the counterinsurgency campaign intensifies?

Where is the incompetent government officials of Haiti??? All are in hiding and not willing to make any public statements!!!
All government officials MUST be required to give back all the "foreign aid dollars" they have stolen over the years! Then, and only then, will I even consider making a donation! Sending money is foolish! No one watches where the money goes! Our "usual" foreign policy in action!

We, the world, need to take this Haiti major disaster as a guide on what to do and not what to do in the future.

Why is it taking so long to get aid (water, food, shelter, clothing) to the living. What on earth is going to happen when the Rains come. It is going to be a huge mess. Where on earth are the tents for these people???? Unicef has the tents....why are they not distributed to the people. UNICEF has the formula for babies......they have to feed the orphan babies powered milk which creates diarrhea.

I don't like sitting here and complaining....but who is in control of the distribution??? UNICEF needs to speed up the distribution of tents to help protect the living from the hot sun and rain.

About time they airdrop food stuff to the quake victims. i thought that should have been done sooner.

At this point, occuppying Haiti should not be an issue. Helping people is what we should be focusing on. Frankly, Haiti need a foreign force to take over; even on a temporary basis. The governement there is so careless about its own people. These poor Haitian people deserve better from their ruler. They've been suffering since the birth of the country – too long.

I want to thank Christian Amanpour for bringing out a Thought that i have been thinking about. She brought it out in the form of a question the other night. Since Haiti is so close to the wealthiest country on earth, how come it is the poorest nation on the western hemisphere. Does the US have any moral obligation to help his neighbor who is doing so poorly?

Ah...Christine, that's enough I've seen it all President & Vice...& both are as much good as a flip of a dice...which means they are playing with odds as regards saving their people. You are doing a great job with the questioning of these two, but after this is over, they should be downgraded to ordinary citizen's. As for "Médecins Sans Frontières " I will be supporting this charity from now on, & I felt for the doctor you interviewed & admired his speaking out for the medical profession who are facing many obstacles in their efforts to help the people...but re; the UN I've lost all faith in them.

They should just pack up after this...& if that duo of a government had any spine in their backs they would be leading from the front. You would have seen them every day on TV shouting for what they need...so that the needs of their people are attended to...but more importantly that their people have the best chance of survival from this.

I can estimate the death toll at, at least 500.000...by the end of this when they count the buried "Dead". Oh & there goes another helicopter charging through the sky breaking up the voice of the President & Prime Minister. Now can they get more aid & medicine to where it is needed with such as the doctor's of "Medecin's San Frontiers". Good work...by you & your team.

& I remember your husband was a great friend of Northern Ireland...when we were desiring peace in our land. We don't forget this work & his partaking in it that he so earnestly carried out. Thank him on my behalf.

The US should move one of it's big frigate ships where they can land helicopters and planes and help in the relief effort on a war footing. is this not possible?

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I'll certainly be back.
