The discussion about Venezuela’s internal crisis continued to stir the emotions of the Amanpour Facebook audience. Many felt Chavez “was in control” and “at least fifty percent” of the citizens in Venezuela were in his favor. Uncertainty was the main reaction portrayed by the majority about this situation. Additionally, the debate concerning Iran’s human rights unfolded new opinions among Amanpour Email viewers. The common thought was that Human Rights Sec. Gen. Mohammad Javad Larijani “left important matters out” and “kept the truth” to himself.

Comments about Venezuela’s opposition leader to Amanpour

It's just a political bluff. The Venezuelan people is still behind El Presidente Chavez.
Osy Nkemakolam
It's possible if Chavez don’t rig the election; Venezuelan economy is in free fall because of Chavez policy of indigenization.
Olumide Aramide
its one Chevez, one Venezuella..u can equate it to one Ghaddafi, one Libya. The people are always loyal to chevez, can't explain it.
Okwesili Ndubisi
Chavez is in control.
Obie Otti
Miracles do happen, they say. The Venezuelan will have to do their best. But it must be noted that that man called Chavez hold the power and welds as he deems fit. Right candidate or not. He will still rig the election.

the venezuelan opposition will win if and only if there is a true democracy there are no shortcuts about it.
The Venezuelan people are not behind Chavez,a group of the population is behind Venezuela's wealth, that Chavez manages as his own. He is letting them steal whatever they want. He knows exactly "who, how, when and where" and will use this information when he sees fit. This guarantees him "loyal followers" a method, he practices home, abroad and across the social framework. CORRUPTION,CORRUPTION,CORRUPTION...
The Venezuelan people are not behind Chavez, a group of the population is enjoying the power he has granted them, people with no merit whatsoever, and whose only qualification is saying yes, are in very high positions and are not likely to give them up; least of all for the good of the Venezuelan people. COERCION,COERCION,COERCION...
CORRUPTION AND COERCION IS ALL CHAVEZ HAS BEHIND
POVERTY AND IGNORANCE IS ALL CHAVEZ IS BEHIND
Thanks Christiane for allowing the two parties to express their views on the situation in Venezuela. It is important that people listen carefully to these views as there are always two sides to a story. Before condemning or praising a political leader, government or system it is necessary that people access other media outlets (e.i. alternative media) to read the other side of the story and thus forming a balance view of these issues. The drums of war have started to sound and it is sad that nothing is being done by the media to expose the real issue here; the insatiable quest for the powerful nations to strip Iran and Venezuela off of its vast natural resources.
President Chavez is an old fashoned Latin American Caudillo.
His hero is Fidel Castro. He is trying to make Venezuela into another socialist state, Cuba.
He has control of all 3 parts of government.
He is ruthless. For him, the end justifies the means. Look at the students that have been murdered by the police forces, his forces.
He closes TV stations at will if they are in opposition.
Yet, Venezuela has the hightest homicide rate in all North and South America. There are more poor people in Venezuela now than 10 years ago when he came it.
He has stacked the judicial branch in his favor.
He has tried to sqelch all his opponents in the legislative branch.
He has turned decomcacy into a farce.
He hates the US and says so. He embraces the government of Iran hoping he can do the same in Venezuela.
He is trying to get the know how of atomic weapons for Venezuela.
To use against whom? USA!!
As for his ambassador talking about the Mexican newspaper La Jornada talking about the electrical shortage in Venezula being less than Mexico, as Ex Cathedra, they are nothing more than a mouthpiece for the far left who will say anthing to supportChavez.
You can not compare the problem in the 2 countries.
Chavez is an enemy of the US. He can not be reasoned with.
He is a disgrace to this people and will go down in history as a clown who did not know how to govern.
How can you interview the head of the Human Rights Council of Iran and not ask about the repetitive, over 30 year, and persistent persecution of the Bahai's of Iran?
The people have no choice but to show loyalty, the people in position have what they want, the masses cant complain for fear of the unknown. They dont want him yet they cant speak out, simply put they are being OPPRESSED.
Interesting segment. Why did Christiane keep interrupting and cutting off the opposition activist Leopoldo Lopez?
Hi.yes- I have been toVenezuela and the people DO back President Chavez. I talked to everyone I met- small business owners, seniors, book vendors on the street, I even visited a factory and health clinics. The only people who were against Chavez that I talked to on the street were those whose priviledges under the former regime were lessened, like some of the private doctors, a mercedes benz dealer, and in general the wealthy. I was impressed most by the number of women of working and lower middle class more or less who had been activated – many working in the extensive educational effort Chavez has launched on every level to educate the populace. That's what the Oil money is going to now, not to those private pockets of before, which is why a lot of those "pockets"are complaining. There are problems- petty theivery in Caracas was bad, but the young- that Mr. Lopez said were not behind Chavez– I found that to be so not true- I even met young men who had come back from Miami etc to live once again in their own countries. So. I think alot of this "Opposition" talk, comes from a disgruntled formerly priviledged class who are also making huge big deals out of the normal glitches in working out how to run a varied country in a new and equitable way.
I was born in Caracas, Venezuela and my family still lives there (unfortunately) because they have all their assets there. The comments that the Venezuelan Ambassador in the U.S. made are completely false, there is more and more poverty as the days go by, there is NO safety when people go out to the streets, unemployment has increased in almost 200%, poor people can not afford to get sick because the public hospitals are completely ruined, and I can go on and on. Chavez names people to be in his government that are illiterate and not prepared at all, what they do is deplete the country and steal more and more, the corruption among them is out of control completely. It is no secret that Iran has Uranium factories in the Venezuelan Amazon where the mines are...Chavez just brought a Cuban military to take control of the Electrical issues in the country (which everyone knows it is a cover up)...there is no freedom of press such is the example of what is going on with Globovision and what happened with RCTV...the police and National Guard abuse their powers against pacific demonstrators and instigate them by putting their people among the demonstrators...Last but not least...CHAVEZ IS LOSING HIS POPULARITY AMONG THE POOR PEOPLE because he hasn't been able to fulfill his promises to them from twelve years ago...
In Venezuela, 80% of the urban population use electricity without paying for it. They steal it, as they hook up to the network without a contract or a meter. This part of the population live in poor areas and they have bought electrical luxuries (like air conditioners) without regards for the Watts used. The current regime is aware of this but in order not to enrage them, it is penalizing the medium class that have meters and mostly oppose the government. It is a big lie that the weather is affecting the hydro-power generation. It is the increased consumption that is posing this problem, because the government did not invest in new and existing generation projects to accompany population growth. Government has sent money and technicians to countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and others to install electricity generation and distribution projects. It is shameful to see how the official media is telling fantasies about the current and future situation about the country's energy.
Does the Iranian representative actually believe what he is saying?
Don't worry, we the free world see what the Iranian government is doing to its citizens. Shame on Iran!.
the iranian representative is saying that basically the protests that brought the Iranian revolution to power in 1979 were okay, but right now, these protests are not....hmmm. I guess it's okay only for the government side.
Miss Amanpour, Latin America is not the United States backyard. Please more respect to us, Latinamericans and our goverments and history. Thanks
mrs. amampour I view your tv program and coincide with many of your points of view... but when speaking about central and south america (latin america) you cannot dispatch us as the USA 's BACK YARD it is of bad taste... It is a continent , many countries, that go about their business as they elect to... countries that are definitively defining their ways they do not have to coincide with the USA.. is it not the way of democracy ? they were countries before the USA
Great interview Sun. 21st. regarding suppression of human rights in Iran.
Good song starting to gain momentum in opposition underground –
Leave Venezuela alone! The U.S. has always opposed governments that do not act in accord with U.S. business interests. It has removed freely and democratically elected governments on that account in Chile, Guatemala, and Haiti; tried to overthrow governments in Cuba, Bolivia, and Venezuela; and recently stood aside while it was done in Honduras. Why does the U.S. station military forces in as many as seven bases in Columbia, in Honduras, in Aruba, and in many other countries around the world? To enforce the will of U.S. business interests in the plutocracy that the U.S. has become.
I thought I could no longer be amazed still at how ignorant, pathetic, lazy, and plain stupid reports are until I saw this lady report on Venezuela today. For starters:
1. Unequal times for the Ambassador and her other guests. Preferring to give the two guests that support her point of view and the US point of view more time than the Ambassador, actually 11 minutes more time.
2. She quotes "polls" however never show the polls or even tell the audience which poll she is quoting. Therefore, if you as the viewer wish to cross reference these "polls" you are out of luck, they are not referenced.
3. She also quotes the Venezuelan people in the same manner as she quoted the polls. Tough luck if you want to do the research as the viewer to cross reference where these generalities and "sources" are coming from.
4. She presents Mr. Lopez as an opposition leader, however she does not give his credentials for being an opposition leader. She also does not mention the fact that Mr. Lopez is still under investigation for theft and other crimes while he was mayor of Chacao. This is the equivalent of Mayor Daily blasting Blago for corruption while being governor of IL. It is laughable.
5. Mr. Lopez calls Venezuela a dictatorship and then admits there are free elections. So which one is it and why didn't Amanpour ask?
6. How about doing some basic research before asking questions about an energy crisis? Mainly it sounded as she did not know that Venezuela is powered 75% by hydro-electric power. How about a tougher question on how the government intends to correct this? Amanpour came off as a lazy news Reader who is incapable of performing basic research.
Personally, I can not stand Chavez and I think he is wrong for my beloved Venezuela. I worry constantly about my family and relatives in Caracas. That being said, Chavez at least shows the world how ignorant reporters are and how a small group of global elite wish to control everyone, i.e. the Copenhagen Conference. Chavez embarrassed the Obama administration by actually reading the treaty before signing it, and speaking out that the proposed treaty to be signed was not the one of agreement.
I hope and pray for the best for Venezuela.
I am from Missouri and cnn "controlled news network" and amanpour failed to show me anything.
I´m a Venezuelan living out of the country since one year ago, I saw the program today, unfortunately not since the beginnig, all can i say since the moment i started to watch it, is all the words that Mr.Leopoldo Lopez said about the situation that the country and their citizens are living are totally correct, not even a word was wrong, I´m totally agree with his participation and the way he answered each question, but is true with all my respect that frecuently Mrs. Amonpour interrumpted him when he was trying to explain his opinion.
So, in conclussion , Mr. Chavez if we can call him like this has destroyed our country, everything is a disaster, homicidies worse than a war, people loosing their cappacity of living, people starving in the streets, childrens homeless asking for money in every corner, very bad hospitals situacion, kidnaps, insecurity Etc.; there are a lots of words how could we explain the bad situacion, but the best resume Mr. Lopez did it.
We hope the opposition will make a good an organized job in the way to avoid the government cheat us again, avoiding buy people with small money and promises that never comes true, Mr. Chavez is an expert buying naives minds. He only use our money to make treats with the rest of the presidents who share his way of thinking, using this for obtain advandages for theirs respectives countries.
Chavez is in control. I do not think that he has 50% of approval at all. The media in the USA does have not made any justice to the Venezuelan people since we are fighting a very lonely fight for freedom and for our survival as a democratic country. In Venezuela, human rights are abused daily because Chavez has dictatorial like powers and total control of all the military forces in our country. He uses the army and the National Guards to daily repress freedom of expression in every form. He has thousands of political prisoners, in addition, all the Venezuelans in the oposition are prisoners of this man's policies to control everything. On his watch, crime rate has increased to a point that Venezuelans do not know if they will return home when they leave their houses because of the many criminals who are protected by a very dysfunctional and corrupt police force. For a long time Chavez has been buying the military, and the National Guards loyalty. Chavez has systematically been retiring the older officers and he has replaced them with uneducated and easily to dominate and to influence new officers. In all the Cuarteles, Chavez’s Revolution Motto “Country, Socialism or Death” is the sign of the new times under Chavez dictatorship. We need help! this is now Chavez's Venezuela, where your young people are peacefully and almost daily marching in the streets trying to expose the world to the hard realities of Chavez’s Marxist government.
