I expected better from Amanpour. Very incompetent interviewing. You did not give the Professor time to answers your questions. He does not condone stoning. Simple.

To the Professor, Bienvenue aux Etats-Unis.

Just consider a situation where he would have to judge a case of a woman risking stoning or any corporal punishment , the question then will be : Would Tariq Ramadan himself decide to inflict her any physical punishment, even found guilty of what being accused of?
The clear answer of Tariq Ramadan, from what he says, is clearly no, no and no, guided as he is by his deep sense of humanity and dignity. In fact Tariq Ramadan is considered as a tireless feminist for he gives women the very central role in his philosophy, defending above all their right of choice. Now Tariq Ramadan is not a judge, and his proposition of moratorium amount to a cease-fire before any serious discussion permitting to achieve a true peace could take place. He is a scholar who bases his position not only on emotion but also on careful reasoning.

Amanpour, who is this muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan ?.

But what a bold and fearless, intellegent and democratic journalist is Christiane Amanpour ? The only question you missed to have asked this muslim scholar Tariq is,why is he not stationed in a particular place in the world, but roaming throughout the earth and going back and forth in the western world ? Instead of going to the Arab world to educate them more if he has good intention for the muslim world to get better knowledge of the Koran ?.
From Egypt to Swiss, from Swiss to France, from France to London, from Lodon to America even though he was banned, yet he appealed to get his way back to the U.S.A. Well he is welcome to the Liberal and democratic country, but I am very much suspecious of his presence in the USA. So he must be placed under serious watchlist or supervision. By the way what message of salvation has he got for the muslim world or the sinning world at large ?.
But Amanpour, I like the way you let him know that you know who he is and where he is coming from .What exactly is Tariq's mission to the western world ?. The west and the christians believe and insists and will continue to insist and believe that (Jesus is son of the living God) and the Koran says "Allah's curse be upon them that sura 9:30) So it is impossible for a muuslim to believe all the words of the Koran and still believe that Jeus is the son of God. So in essence what am I saying ?. First our attention should be drawn here to the fact that, this is a man who believe all the words of the Koran and has even written a book,"WHAT I BELIEVE IN"
and still want the world to believe him that his thoughts to the west are thoughts of peace and not of evil. No I am very suspicious of this man.The only advice I will give to the western world is "Be sober,be vigilant, because your adversary the devil,as a roaring lion, walk about ,seeking whom he may devour"There is no alternative religion and evangelism to the westerners and the christians other than "Jesus the son of God" No superficial preaching or academic exercise can catch the western mind. So he should know the society in which he's been brought up,before deceiving himself as a muslim scholar or being inspired by Allah to preach.

As far as the hudud, yes of course he should create "confusion about religion," as hudud punishments (mutilation, stoning, beheading, lashing etc.) are gross violations of human rights and dignity and make even most Muslims uncomfortable. In fact there are plenty of Muslims more honest and courageous than Ramadan who quite unambiguously condemn hudud punishments, without resorting to equivocations or pandering to ulama who have NO sense of human dignity. Amanpour did a great job.

Christiane; Your last Sunday program was the best I've watched all last week. I am looking forward to when your program is aired DAILY.
I have had enough of Larry King and Wolf Blitzer. They should be moved to the Weekend. I will still be happy to see them NO MORE than once a week. But you Christiane I would like to see your "fair and balanced" reporting more often. I don't have to tell you to keep up the good work because you really don't need to be told that. It is in your genes!
PS. You impressed me the most in your series "GOD's Warriors". It must be aired again and again until half the population is no longer brainwashed by FOX. The other half are hopeless!

This is what we call journalism !!!!!

In France we have the same kind of "journalists". Same tricks to manipulate the opinion.

I don't think the Islamists ever want to get off their cross, and insist that even objecting to hudud punishments is persecution. The fact is, reasonable, decent people CANNOT live in peace with Muslims who insist on amputation, stoning, and execution of apostates. Reasonable people CANNOT live in peace with Muslims who insist on armed jihad and conquest of the unbelievers in the name of Islam. Reasonable people CAN and do live in peace with Muslims who pray, fast, eat halal food, donate to charity, wear Islamic dress, and perform pilgrimage. In fact, these, and not hudud punishments, are the basic and non-negotiable aspects of Islam which we cannot ask Muslims to repudiate, any more than Muslims can ask us to repudiate religious freedom (including the freedom to change one's religion) and punishments that are humane. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking Muslims to repudiate such doctrines unreservedly; the absence of hudud punishments in no way interferes with an individual's right to practice Islam. The majority of Muslims already know this and want to enjoy peace and prosperity among their non-Muslim neighbors, they are only unable to say so because of constant intimidation by preachers (the ulema), fanatics, and cowardly evasion by "leaders" like Ramadan.

Welldone Amanpour! you must have read the koran too, what Tariq Ramadam says does not matter, he speaks from both sides of his mouth (taqyya),we know what the koran says and its pure evil, since Ramadan is a muslim he endorses the koran which is full of crimes against humanity (infidels). I wonder how Tariq Ramadan could sleep at night.

I don't see how any intelligent person can be confused by what Tariq Ramadan is saying. He is clear that he personally does NOT agree with capital punishment, stoning, etc. He then voices his opinion to Middle Eastern governments, saying he's against it, and they should reevaluate what they are doing. This is huge! He has the reputation of standing up for equality and social justice, so much so that he is now banned from many of these Middle Eastern countries. How do people in the West not understand where he stands on this issue?

Layla, maybe what you need to look at is the response to what he said which you yourself quote....'he is now banned from many of these Middle Eastern countries".

Now why, Layla, would he be "banned" from these countries? Why?

He is banned because he does not represent islam in what he says. He is banned because THEY know that what he is talking about is not permitted in islam. He is banned because ANY kind of moderation is NOT what Islam is about. Any kind of humanity is not what islam is about. Any kind of PEACEfulness is not what islam is about. Islam is about extremism, misogynism, racism, violence, abuse of children and women, MURDER of anyone who is not a muslim....well, the list goes on and on.

What don't you get about that, Layla?!?

In addition to all of that, I personally believe he is practicing 'taqqiya' [LYING] to advance the cause of islam!

That is practicing 'taqqiya' [LYING] to advance the cause of islam with NAIVE Westerners who want to believe that islam is a religion like any other that is peaceful and good. Islam is neither!!

Absolutely false: He is banned because he opposes the dictatorship of these governements, because he praises freedom of speech in every country. Taqqiya is more a shia tradition in context of war while Tariq Ramadan is a sunni. He is constantly working with peaceful purposes for a better understanding and acceptance between westeners and the muslim world culminating into his enlightened universal philosophy of a new "we".
And since now nodody has been able to demonstrate forcefully the claim that Tariq Ramadan is arguably practising double talk, admittedly he is talking currently 3 languages : arabic french and english; Is it sufficent to qualify him a double or triple talker and his speeches given in differents languages as being proofs of double talk? In fact it is as silly as to accuse someone whose views has evolved throughout his life of endorsing double talk. Certainly a partial hearing is more likely to explain that critism. And finally the question is why tariq ramadan is the subjet of such attacks? Leaving aside islamophobia, the answer surely lies in his outspoken critics of the israeli policies against the innocent people of Palestine.
