Think you know what Iran is up to? You might be surprised. Watch this 25 minute special program with Christiane Amanpour to get the answers:
by David Molko, CNN Senior Producer
What do we really know about the Iranian nuclear threat? Iran says it wants the right to have its peaceful nuclear program formally recognized. But from the outside, Iran has long given the impression it has something to hide. And fear that Iran may soon have the capability to build a nuclear weapon, has spurred talk of a need to take action, even suggestions of a pre-emptive strike against Iran by Israel or the United States. But is that fear based on fact?
CNN's Christiane Amanpour presents what you need to know about Iran, the threat of war over its nuclear program, and the path forward. From murky evidence of weapons testing, to the uncertain intentions of its leaders, we find out from those who know the most: the experts.
If Iran decided to produce weapon-grade uranium, how long would it take to make enough for a bomb, and when would the world know? If Israel were to send fighter jets to bomb the Natanz or Fordo enrichment sites, what damage could they do? What the experts know and what they don’t know, may surprise you.
And what exactly does Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, mean when he declares the pursuit of nuclear weapons to be a “great sin?” How would Iran respond to an act of aggression by the West? And is there hope for a diplomatic solution? One expert explains why no U.S. President has been able to come to terms with the Islamic Republic. And a long-time adviser to the Supreme Leader reveals Iran’s bottom line.
Clearly you make a great case for the peaceful intentions of Iran's nuclear program, but this video seems to forget the very real connection between Iran and Hezbollah and the actual impact that has had on Iran's legitimacy. Iranian state sponsored terrorism that has targeted Israeli and Iraqi civilian populations has done far more to alienate Iran than its actions under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and restricting the IAEA's access to its facilities. Iran has premised its so called peaceful intentions with clearly defined acts of war against Israel and the United States and if they are willing to put long range rockets into the hands of a terrorist organization it would not be a far stretch for them to attempt to arm their ally's with much more powerful devices.
You didn’t get the Point. Nuclear deterrence it's what it is all about. I you would have followed up the report it would be clear to you, once Iran obtain military nuclear power any further bombing of Israel’s neighbors by Israel would have to be considered twice, which is diametrical to Israel’s strategically doctrine to strike everywhere whenever they want. Nuclear Weapons are sole political instruments since the cold war and MAD.
You seem to not get the point that Israel has never bombed any neighbor in history unless that neighbor FIRST attacked them. Nor has Israel ever given the impression that they have designs of invading any neighbor accept as war might make it a necessity. So what you are saying is that Iran wants nuclear weapons so that they and their allies can attack Israel with less fear of Israel striking back.
I agree with you.

I agree with "getaround".

As for history, Israel underwent preparations to attack the Kahuta facility in Pakistan in 1982 to prevent the “Islamic Bomb”, the operation was called off as the target was “too hard to hit”. It appears nuclear deterrence worked ever since.
Israel strike whenever anywhere and anytime long ended in 2006. Although they don't like to admit it, they failed to enforce a sea blockage on Lebanon and suffered an embarrassing defeat in the valley. At the end, they picked up their dead soldiers and went home without achieving their goal. They spent 6 years after that trying to find their captured solider insider their border and failed. Except for the corrupt Arab leaders who are being toppled one by one, we all believe defeating is Israel is an achievable goal. They have been blowing smoke about Iran for the past 4 years, and they have done nothing. It is time for them to shut the hell up and listen to the Arab uprising.
Could you explain to me how MAD which is Mutual assured Destruction would affect people who willingly strap bombs to their bodies and blow them up just to get to kill some of their enemies? If you were wrong about Iran's peaceful intent with nuclear weapons, would you feel the least bit guilty if they hit The Big Apple with a nuke?
No nation is afraid of Iran.
██♐Göring: "Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."
Gilbert: "There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."
Göring: "Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."
I believe you replied to "Gilbert" words to the effect that in the U.S. only Congress can declare war. Congress never declared war on Vietnam, nor on Iraq, nor on Afghanistan.
Thanks for reiterating the Bush 2nd's method. No one wants to beleive that is what took place – stooping to such lows. But fearful Congress went along – to make money for constituants – greedy. We will keep paying for – the Iraq war for many years to come and – the damage done to our democratic/republic system.
Hermann Goering was correct – uneducated people are easily led to war by propaganda based upon loyalty and patriotism, which is why the right wants to do away with the department of Education. It is much easier to motivate the uneducated, and the Tea Party is a perfect example.
Well said Wes Scott.
There are clear winners and losers in any war. Winners include those who frequently use patriotism as a platform for election, those who manufacture arms, the government contractors and officials on their paycheck. Losers as always are those young soldiers who lose life or limb and their families and the civilians on the other side.
This seems to be an exact copy of Iraq war scenario. They keep filling the airways with fear of Iran's nukes until everybody accepts there is a real threat. Then they come and tell you that a war indeed boosts economy and it becomes a done deal. Obama for his part has melted under forign (Israeli) and internal (GOP) pressure to move up the red-line from Iran havng a nuclear arm to having the capacity to make a nuclear arm which could be easily cased for as Collin Paul did in his sameless presentation to UN in 2003. We're up for another repeat of history if we don't learn the lessons of 2003.
That's the way it would work in the US. If Obama wanted war congress would roll over for him one more time and we would all have to go along whether we wanted to or not. Now if that can happen in the US, how much more likely is it to happen in North Korea which is always threatening of Iran which is learning foreign policy from N Korea?
Hey look! american fear based propoganda again.
Think they ran out on fake flag operations.
Without Hezbollah Lebanon would still be under Israeli occupation. They are a democratically supported legitimate resistance movement.
Hezbolla a democratically supported terrorist organization? Arte you an Iranian? You certainly cannot be an American. They are smarter than that.
The problem with Iran is that they want lan evil leverage with the Nuclear bomb. They can then do rogue things like North Korea and you canno admonish them because of the nuclear card. For Iran the possibilities are endless. They can hold Isreal at ransome and you cannot defend Israel because Iran has the bomb. IRAN MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE THIS BOMB. This will be the end of the world as we know it.
It will eventually lead to Israel using nuclear weapons on Iran and eventually Russia, China and the US will be drawn into a nuclear war which might be the end of all life on this planet.
what does it matter that iran supports hezbollah? ignoring for the moment that hezbollah is part of the legitimate, internationally recognized government of lebanon, and provides much needed civil services to it's citizens – what does it matter if iran supports groups involved in terror? the united states gave the MEK assistance during the invasion of iraq, and when they left their bases we even let them keep all of their weaponry. The MEK has conducted terror operations inside iran, including against civilian targets. Not only does iran consider them to be a terror group, the us state department has them on their list of terror groups as well (meaning giving them aid is a violation of us law). whats good for the goose is good for the gander. if thats the sort of people we are going to aid, it makes you a tiny bit hypocritical to complain about hezbollah.
Also, there is no logic in your argument that iran has any intention to support hezbollah or anyone else with weapons of any substantial power. the rockets (and number of them) that hezbollah maintains makes it a serious nuisance, but no real threat to israel. Iran has maintained enough highly enriched uranium in it's posession to make a nuke, peacefully since the the late 60's and here we are, nearly half a century later and tel aviv still doesnt glow in the dark. I think 44 years of peaceful, responsible use of nuclear technology speaks much louder to iran's intentions than your unfounded fears.
Stan – i like your thoughts but you should know this isn't really about the nuke threat. If Iran fired a nuke towards Isreal the US would just shoot it down over the gulf. No – Iran is next to be brought to the 21st century via the sword unless North Korea is ready. Iran knows they are Enemy #1 due to the Beruit bombing in the 80s and the hostage crisis in 1979 which was an act of war. Once the troops are out of Afganistan the US will invade Iran. They know it is coming and they are trying to build a nuke as a deterent and in the process justlifing the invasion.
Where in the world did Iran get weapons grade Uranium so long ago. Which country transferred ti to them?
One must understand that Amanpour is a huge liberal. Liberals hate Israel worse than the devil. I listen to them demonizing Israel all the time. They'd be happy if Iran developed a weapon and used it to eliminate those poor people. Don't believe the hype liberal media outlets such as CNN put out. Iran has bad intentions. Make no mistake about it.
I'm a liberal and I'm jewish and I don't hate Israel. In fact I have relatives who died in the holocaust, so I believe that Israel must exist so that it can never happen again. But you make a lot of sweeping statements without giving any examples to back them up. This is not a liberal vs. conservative (read- Democrat vs. Republican) issue. Don't make it one.
Hey Zack, I am with on as far as Iran having a track record of helping out Hezbollah. But Hezbollah to Iran is like the IRA was to Catholic Irish-Americans -even the Kennedys. THey are both Shia and so are the Iraqis. So Iran has a duty to help them out as it sees itself as the center of Shia Islam. However, Iran should motivate Hezbollah to take on more of a political agenda rather than a mmilitary one, since it cannot morally, culturally etc cut relations with Hezbollah. Severing ties with Hamas, it should do over time , since Hamas is a Sunni organization that will drop Iran as a sponsor when it gets a sweeter deal.
As far as the nuclear issue. Clearly, Khamenie the Supreme Leader of Iran is on the record stating it is a "sin" to own nuclear weapons. Furhtermore, Iran cannot possibly be a nuclear threat. Why? Let's assume Iran gets the know how of assembling anuclear weapon and learns how to load it on a ballistic missile. The reality is that Iran even if threatened by a war cannot use a nuclear weapon, since manufacturing one and then testing it will take time. Enough time that the West would be able to take a first punch and knock off the program all together. Now let's assume, Iran secretively prior to any conflict assembles the weapon. Clearly, the nuclear weapon will be no good and just a dud if it is sitting in a factory. If they manufacture one prior to any conflict, then they would definetely need to TEST it to make sure IT WORKS if there ever is going to be a war. Testing it, is not something they can do without the world learning about it. Even if it is tested underground. Infact, when NK tested its nuclear weapon, it initially did it underground and without publicing it. However, the world powers were able to learn that North Korea did indeed test it.
So to make a long story short, Iran has stated they don't want a nuclear weapon. Even if they lie and make one, they would have to test it. Testing it may suceed or more possible it will falter- due to reliance on self technology. So, essentially the calls for more sanctions is unwarranted since Iran does not have a weapon...further more, if they test it the world knows about it. Let's wait for them to test it (which they have said they don't need) and then take efffective actiion like attacking the sites. Very simple. Just think things through and you will learn it is much ado about nothing. It is primarily to put unneceesary pressure on Iran- by enacting sanctions that will hurt the people of Iran more than anyone else. I hope that helps you put things in perspective. One last thing, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries have also aided terrorist organizations without consquences. Also, the peace process in Middle East has taken over 30 years without any positive results and that can't be blamed on Iran though Iran is an easy target. The failure of 30 years of preace process should be blamed on the Palestinians and Israelis with Israel being held liable the most since Israel is in a position of power whereas the Palsetinians are negotiating from a weak position, and usually it is the stronger party that can do the most to make negotiations succeed since they are capable of offering more-like making Jerusalam an "international" city and give Palestinians a land of their own on 1967 borders or better yet do as Iran says hold a referendum and let all Palestinians participate even the refugees.
Ali – you don't get it. If Isreal gave in and gave the Arabs everything they want it would not be enough. The day after they got the 1967 border they would ask for the 1948 border. That is why Isreal isn't comprimising – because they know it will not be enough. Iran needs a nuke because they need a deterent to keep the US from invading (which should have happened in 1979). Does anyone remember the middle east before 1979? The place was amazing and the only disruption to the peace was Isreal deciding after being attacked over and over that it needed to occupy a buffer zone which is the only reason Isreal was ever in Lebanon or the West Bank. Iran is on very shaky ground and the leaders know it. All the US needs is one slip up by Iran and it will be lights out. Any country that is holding the human race back is going to be a target in the future. Nice to see Burma wised up. North Korea wants reunification – but they want conpensation for it. Read between the lines of the new leader's speech. The army can't just be dis-banded nor can the rulling party. They can be bought though – that was the message he was sending. Don't be shocked if the US and South Korea and China come up with a plan to re-unify Korea that involves billions of dollars that will be for "infrastructure projects" that never happen....
Thank you for a refreshing viewpoint based on actual truth amongst threads posted by those who do not know or care not to remember history. Sometimes appeasement is the quickest way to war. We laugh as if aggressive, ambitious regimes died along with Hitler.
Don't forget that Iran and Israel had close ties until the Islamic Revolution in the late 70's – remember a guy named Khomeini? Since purposefully cutting politcal ties with Israel, the regime in Iran has done nothing but make direct threats against Israel. Ahmadinejad denies that the Holocaust ever happened, denies another country's right to exist, and threatens to wipe them "from the page of time."
Then pursues nuclear capability, claiming peaceful intentions. Strange for such an oil-rich country to need 'peaceful' nuke energy capability.
Iran has denied inspectors entry and continually tried to hide its full nuclear program. So let's review:
1) Threaten the only democratic nation in the Middle East
2) Politically and financially fund both Hamas and Hezbollah for attacks against Israel
3) Develop nuclear capability despite UN sanctions
4) Deny IAEA inspectors from verifying your 'peaceful' nuke ambitions
5) Keep a large portion of your nuke programs secret and begin moving enrichment to underground facilities
6) Threaten to close the Straight of Hormuz, requiring a US carrier group to permanently set up shop there
The question is not 'why would we be so fearful of Iran?' – it is 'why the hell would we NOT be fearful of Iran?'
Yes, a war would make Iran's people suffer. But the people aren't calling the shots there. The regime is – and it has proven that it is more than willing to sacrifice its own people to keep itself in power. So while one can feel badly for Iranians, that is no reason to appease a dangerous regime. Many are so afraid of a war with Iran that a war is exactly what they are causing to happen. Read about Chamberlain and the Munich Pact.
If Iran fully moves its nuke program underground at its Qom site, that is about it. Obama can read speech after speech from teleprompter after teleprompter at campaign stop after campaign stop. But the weather is great in D.C. while Israel prepares for another round of rocket attacks in their north country.
IAF F-15's can reach Iran sites and even Saudi has given permission for Israel to use their airspace for an attack. We forget – Israel is not the only country in the Middle East who does not want a nuclear Iran. OPEC cringes everyday about what might happen. The media spouts how oil-rich countries will make money if a war drives prices up. De-stabilization of the region is exactly what OPEC does NOT want.
The US administration puts on the mask of having Israel on a leash. But remember Israel's strategic attacks against Iranian and Syrian nuke sites already. Israel is already shuffling people out of its northern country, bracing for Hezbollah rockets as a result of Israeli strikes on Iran. We play around with sanctions that have not stopped Iran. They 'negotiate' to buy time, coming back and forth from the bargaining table. A cheap ploy that anyone who knows history sees right through, including Israel.
Iran has the choice to stop their enrichment (to weapons grade levels), but they will waste that choice. They DO have the right to develop nukes – the US, the world, and the IAEA do not have the right to tell them that they don't. But there will be consequences – if Iran thinks that it is worth the risk (and they have so far), then let them make their choice.
Nobody can blame Israel for striking. Their enemy has a gun. It is now putting bullets in that gun. You don't wait until the gun is pointed at your head before you do something. By then, it is too late. If the US were in the same position, being directly threatened by a neighboring country that is funding rocket attacks across into the US, and is now developing nuclear capability, I doubt we would wait on decades of sanctions to finally work.
Yet so many here are fast to advise Israel to appease – complete hypocrisy. If you would do everything possible to make sure your own family was safe to go to school, shop, eat at restaurants, go to nightclubs, drive down highways, and just plain live, then how do you justify NOT expecting Israel to do the same?
Heck, we had 3000 Americans die on 9/11 and we invaded two countries – even Democrats voted to fund the wars. A country with a regime swearing to wipe Israel from the planet is now developing nukes. What would YOU do in Israel's shoes? Ask yourself that question – make it personal like it is for millions of Israelis – before you break out the "let's all just hug" appeasement posts...
Iran is ruled by some rather wacked out dudes that think the 12th (or is it 13th?) Iman is coming to destroy the great satan. And since they consider the US to be the great satan i guess they MIGHT think they have a chance in a war. Truth is they don't and it wouldn't take more than a month of contiunous air strikes to bring Iran to its knees. They would be tough to invade or occupy – but why would the US do that? I would just turn the country into a firing range for the latest drones for the next couple years and never put on boot on the ground. If the US had the tech it has now in 2002 we would have never put so many troops in Iraq and Afganistan. What would be the point? They can hunt all day and night with the drones and never put a US solder in danger. Just saying.... Iran might have some crazy leaders but nobody is that crazy.
Israel has 200 nuclear war-heads without signing the IAEA treaty. They constantly been threatening Iran. How about making a documentary about that, and look at the case from Iran eyes?!
Superman sais " Israel has 200 nuclear war-heads without signing the IAEA treaty."
I agree 200 % with him.
No midia comments that.
Strange how you see support for a Lebanese pro-equality and pro-democracy as deligitimizing Iran. The reality is that the greatest 'sin' Iran has committed is publically embarassing the US by exposing to the world, and even Americans, American support for brutal dictatorships and ethnic cleansing. That it has compounded that 'sin' by refusing to be crushed by the US, and then refusing to let the US crush others in the ME, well, that only drove the US to greater efforts to crush them, and the nuclear 'issue' has provided useful cover for that effort, but, like the 'communist' charges against Mandella, those who dig beneath the rhetoric and propaganda find a rather different picture exists.
My dear friend Ricky – you forget the 1979 hostage crisis and the Beruit bombing which killed 250+ US troops in the 80s – which are both CELEBRATED in Iran. Both were acts of war and should not be forgotten. IF Iran were to admit that those were both state terrorist acts then we would see the tension start to ease. The US admitted it was wrong in Veitnam and has worked to help that country and normalized relations with them. Iran has no interest in peace with the US – so why should the US want peace with Iran?
????? The USA has tried to promote democracy whenever posible. Are you saying we should give that up and support dictatorships and theocratic totalitarian forms of government? Put down your hammer and sickle, its been tried many times before. Fact is, Democracy exists in Isreal. And freedom and liberty are being tied in Iraq and Afganistan. And that is a direct threat to the complete rule the leadership Iran suffers with now.
Clearly you have forgot that US has trained Taliban and other military groups so your comment has no base...We supported them as well... So thanks but no thanks
These "Experts" who contributed to this article, are they the same "Experts" who said that Iraq had WMD's?
Let me quess; YES!
Bullseye!
It also missed the point that why the Middle east looking for nuclear – Israel already has the nuclear weapon, why not others then? Iran has better record than Israel or any other country that has not attacked/invaded any country last 300 years.
When you say Hisbolla and other link of Iran, who doesn;t have these connection to blame, is Mosad and CIA free from this?
The connection with Hezbollah does not mean they will get a nuclear device if one is made. Nuclear devices can be traced by looking at their mass spectrums. Use of one made by Iran any where in the world would most certainly result in a full nuclear retaliation which is something I doubt their government would risk.
Hey Goldfinger, how many bombs do you think isreal is willing to take. You make it sound like its a popcorn fart! One H-bomb would make the whole east coast of the USA a wasteland. Isreal is the size of New Jersey. One small nuke in downtown Tel Aviv would be like taking out the USA's West coast. You really think they are going to wait for forensic tests? How dangerous and naive.
These rhetorics of iran supporting terrorist groups and therefore should not be trusted and struck at once is becoming very lame as many people with no idea whatsoever find it a good way of pretending to have an opinion. United states itself, since the second world war, has either openly or from behind the scenes, at some point supported most of the terrorist groups all around the world. This includes the alqaida in the 90s. Also israel supported hamas and other militant groups that were later designated as terrorists. The sad truth about the international politics is that all countries looking for political leverage beyond their borders for the purpose of security or influence have or continue to support groups that are or will in the future be considered terrorists. Iran is no exception to that and has actually supported much less terrorism than either united states or israel. These are simple facts that anyone with the minimum knowledge in international relations or history knows about.
and what proof do u have that Iran is a sponsor of state terrorism such as Hezbollah?i feel that because of the actions of the rulers.....the people of Iran are suffering..........these sanctions based on ASSUMPTIONS are clear violations of united nations charter (we all know united nations is itself well.....SOLD)......i hope diplomacy is used to reach a solution........u cannot just go and start destroying countries just because u THINK they have weapons........and btw....israel has nukes......and they have been killing palestenians like flies........
Down and Out...I am surprised Iran hasn't gone Tantric about all the threats....they make more $$ in nuclear energy...
You still owe us those god forsaken Iraqi WMDs.
Right on bro. Why invent new bombs as a reason to attack instead of using the good old ones??? US can attack Iran based on the Iraqi WMDs, and then Syria, and then..
I think the US should not attack any country just because they attacked us with nmuclear weapons. We should try and talk to them to see why they did it and if they was going to do it again. If they said yes we should try to limit the number of bombs they would attack us with.
Leave them alone!!
He has a point it makes economical sense to go after nuclear power because with the power from the nuclear plants they could export more oil and make more money. For them to build and use a nuke would be illogical; if any country including Iran were to use a nuclear weapon they would have the rest of the world going after them politically and possibly militarily, so in summery it would make complete sense for Iran to have nuclear energy, but no sense to use a nuclear weapon.
They are enriching uranium far beyond the point needed for fuel. Weapons grade uranium is never used for fuel. It is too dangerous to mess with.
it's hard to say whether or not it's a good or bad idea so we should just pray for all the Iranians.
Its called a religion of peace, but why do they feel they have the audacity to have free course in propagating their beliefs around the world and place a ban on that of others on their.
Saudi Arabia bans Christianity, and the Grand Mufti - Saudi Arabia's highest Islamic authority - has called for the destruction of all churches on the Arabian Peninsula.
Yet, there hasn't been much of a global outcry over this persecution.
"Imagine if Pat Robertson called for the demolition of all the mosques in America. It would be front-page news. It would be on every network and cable news program," Cliff May, president of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, wrote in a recent Townhall.com column.
"There would be a demand for Christians to denounce him, and denounce him they would - in the harshest terms. The president of the United States and other world leaders would weigh in, too. Rightly so," he continued.
"So why is it that when ... the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, declares that it is 'necessary to destroy all the churches in the Arabian Peninsula,' the major media do not see this as even worth reporting?" he asked.
well here's the trick. Islam, according to it's prophet, is not a new religion. Islam was introduced as the completion of Christianity and Judaism. The prophet Mohammed was sent by God to correct the subversions made by Christians and Jews to God's will. That's the basis of Islam. So, accordingly, it makes no sense to Muslims to tolerate those two other practices since they are deemed wrong. But it's a little more complicated since, also, Islam is supposed to respect the "people of the book" , which is what Christians and Jews are called. But that is also the nature of Islam which is a lot more political than philosophical. So there is ample room for all kinds of interpretations depending on where and when you have to deal with the 2 other religions.
You are totally confused. Iranians do not prosletyze. Iran has no desire to establish an Islamic (Sunni) Caliphate. Also, Christians and Jews are free to practice their religion in Iran. You are confusing Iran with Saudi Arabia. They are totally different.
Tell that to Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, who is facing execution in Iran for refusing to convert from Christianity back to Islam.
you are flat wrong, I have had Muslims try to proslytize me. And I know of Christians in other countries who were given the choice of converting or being driven out of thier homes, and even killed.
Exactly they are very different. Everyone is free to be and practice what they believe in Iran..........unless your gay then you're killed on site or forced (by the state) to have a sex change operation. Clearly their intentions are pure and wholesome
Iran and Saudi arabia are not very different when it comes to religious fundamentalism, remember those cases last year when the iranian autorithies were persecuting people of the baha´i faith? they even forbid conversion from islam to other
religions, it can even be punished by death, and there are many cases of people arrested for supposed apostasy.
"The penalty for conversion from Islam, or apostasy, is death." -Founder of the Islamic Republic, Islamic cleric Ruhollah Khomeini-
Didn't Iran recently condemn a Christian Minister to Death for operating a Church in Iran?
@eagle,the topic is nuclear and you went beyond.Let me ask you one question, why westerns have stopped going into churchs?if muslims are practising their religion, let them educate others.
If you think using Saudi Arabia as an example of Islam is cogent, chances are you have much more to learn. Wahabbism is not Islam.
THE REASON WHY IS BECUASE ITS APART OF THE PROMISE LAND,GENESIS 15:18 PROMISES BASED ON THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST ARE SO ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT FAITH CAN CLAIM THEM AS ALREADY POSSESSED;HENCE,THE BELIEVER IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS NEITHER ASHAMED NOR AFRAID TO SAY,"I AM SAVED")THE ACTUAL AREA PROMISED BY GOD TO ABRAHAM GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE NILE RIVER IN EGYPT,WHICH INCLUDES THE SINAI,THE ARAB PENINSULA,MUCH OF MODERN IRAQ,MOST OF SYRIA,AND ALL OF LEBANON:SO I TELL YOU EAGLE EYE NO ONE CAN QUESTION GOD,MY FATHER HAVE SPOKEN AND I KNOW IT WILL COME TO PASS,FOR IT IS WRITTEN EZEKIEL 39:20 Thus ye shall be filled at My table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD. (THE ANTICHRIST WILL THINK TO SET A "table" PROTRAYING THE DEFECT OF ISRAEL,BUT INSTEAD he AND his ARMY WILL BE THE "table," I.E., "MY table,"I.E., THE TABLE OF THE LORD.)
The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia is not the highest islamic authority. There is no equivalent of a pope in Islam. Since the passing of Mohammed (pbuh) and the 4 Khalifs for the Sunnis and the 12 imams for Shias, there is no single highest authority in Islam. In general, the authority to derive Islamic law from Qur'an and Sunnah rests with people of knowledge, which is no one person. In general, average people make decisions about which people of knowledge to follow and learn from. They are usually only encouraged to be consistent in that decision.
eagle eye, you seem to forget that America is what it is because of the founding fathers made it so it is not based on religion. Saudi Arabia and Israel, both are nations formed on the basis of religion. And there is problem. America faces problem all over the world because it blindly supports Israel. America by itself will have no problems from anyone had it been fair in dealings throughout its foreign policies. As a matter of fact, all over the world, Americans are respected while its policies are hated. Wonder why? Iraq and Afghanistan were avoidable and Iran is not our problem, but yet special interest groups in USA will get us involved in yet another conflict for no reason whatsoever.
Because he really isn't worth repeating. He's an Arab, and thus is stuck both culturally and intellectually in the dark ages. Barbarians are like toddlers, if you pay too much attention to their temper-tantrums, they'll never stop doing it.
If the world didn't need oil, I'd support the idea of building a wall around the entire Arabian region and letting no one in or out. Humanity would be better off. They're an embarrassment to the entire species.
Saudi Arabia needs the US to defend it against Iran and Iraq, either of which could easily defeat the Saudi military, even today.
American needs Saudi Arabia because they allow us to stage there as a forward base of operations in the Middle East from which we can quickly strike anybody that we deem to be a threat.
Saudi Arabia provides more oil to us than the rest of the Middle East combined, yet the amount it provides is dwarfed by either Canada or Mexico, the two largest exporters of oil to the US. But, Americans wrongly believe that we are "dependent upon the Middle East for energy", so they kowtow to Saudi Arabia and falsely believe that country to be our friend and ally. Most of those who struck us on 9-11 were from Saudi Arabia – NOT Iran, NOT Iraq, NOT Afghanistan!
The American oil tycoons know that most Americans are illiterate about these matters, and so they play up to Saudi Arabia for their own financial interest at the expense of a dumb populas here at home. Politicians play up to energy tycoons because they want money for campaigns, even though they know the "dependence upon Middle East oil" is a myth.
In short, it is a circle jerk and the American people are standing in the middle of the circle!
I am sorry to say that I expected a lot more from Amanpour. I found the report shallow.
Where is the Israeli intelligence side?
What do the Russians say?
Why do we get this ex state dep lady talking 4 times?
I agree war is not welcome, but attacking Germany in 1937 would have prevented world war 2.
Can we afford another Chamberlain?
Again, much to simplistic report, and disappointing.
Hope next time can go deaper... see how the bbc does it!
Thanks
From the US and Israel's standpoint, Iran having the bomb and not using it is a lot worse than Iran having one and using it.
Correction.....Israel standpoint forced down the US throat...just the war in Iraq was....
This is not 'news', CNN is a political propaganda canon run by people with money and special interest different to public interest.
Israel will disappear if there is even a fear of a nuke hitting Tel-Aviv. All them Jews will pack their bags and move back to Europe. The Jew wants to live in Israel in prosperity under the slave-labor of the Palestians with the free money and protection of the American Taxpayers. History has a nasty way of repeating itself. I hope to God for the Jewish people it doesn't happen. But it will!
Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?! Attacking Germany would prevent the war?! 😀
Your comparing Iran, who has never attacked any other country in the world, to Natzi Germany? Another example of the ignorance and stupidity of mankind.
"Conclusion
Supreme Leader Khamenei has stated that the production, stockpiling, and use of nuclear weapons are
forbidden under Islam. But his recent language on the subject has become more equivocal, emphasizing only the prohibition on their use and not on their production or stockpiling. And should the needs of the Islamic Republic or the Muslim umma change, requiring the use of nuclear weapons, the Supreme Leader could just as well alter his position in response. This means that, ultimately, the Islamic Republic is unconstrained—even by religious doctrine—as it moves toward the possible production and storing of nuclear weapons."

the thing I hate most in the wester point of view... is that one looks at Iran as a threat, IT IS NOT, it could be a friend.. it is basically the only normal country in the middle east, Iran is a great civilization and a great people, it DOES NOT WANT war, it wants life, recognizition and happiness – I really hope the west doesnt destroy this country "for the greater good".
Israel may well want to wipe Iran out of the face of this earth but it is not the Americans plan...
American greed for oil says they must KILL the people, destroy their homes and cities but keep oil facilities intact.
Like in Libya, oil companies will start to fight for a piece of the Iranians oil reserves long before the war Israelis will start and drag America ends! Just like vultures overflying a still alive animal... All those vampireswant is to steal the Iranian people!
If the US wanted oil, we would have taken it from Iraq and not spent our taxpayer dollars rebuilding Iraq. What an empty argument.
You are CLUELESS!!! GO GET SOME HELP PLEASE!!! Iran and the rest of Islam are the one who want to destroy Israel,,Islam is Satans answer to Christianity,,
NORMAL? They execute people because of their sexuality, or force them to have a sex change operation. What is normal or peaceful about that?
What ONE Iranian A Bomb do against 200+ from Israel and THOUSANDS from the United States of America?
If the United States of America had ANY interest in a negotiated solution it would promptly accept the deal broke by Brazil + Turkey for the exchange of Iranian LEU for the required for their research reactor.
It shows Iran don trust the U.S. let alone Israel nut is interested on peace and security for their people and regime.
The U.S. and Israel hope they can demonize Iran to the public opinion and create an urgency to attack Iran just like they did with the Iraq WMD FIASCO.
Is is NO SECRET to the world that all the barbarians want is OIL and the protection of Israeli hegemony in the ME.
Just imagine what Israel will do to the Palestinian people and remaining land when they no longer fear Hamas + Hezbollah and Iran!
I think you've got it backwards. It was Iran that threatened to wipe Israel off the face of the map.
http://www.voltairenet.org/IMG/pdf/Nuclear_Fatwa.pdf
1- U.S., thousands of Nuclear weapons, NPT says nuclear powers MUST dismantle their nuclear WMD arsenals!
2- U.S. has used nuclear weapons TWICE against civilians!
3- U.S. has threatened Iran to use tactical nuclear weapons against Iranian nuclear facilities
4- Israel, 200+ illegal nuclear WMD artifacts obtained with the help of Europeans and Americans!
5- Israel, refuses to sign the NPT
6- Israel, has threatened to transform Iran into a nuclear waste dump!
7- Iran, Signatory of the NPT
8- Iran, as far as can be PROVED, enriching Uranium according to NPT
9- Iran, has publicly declared they are not interested in nuclear weapons and NO ONE can PROVE otherwise.
10. The people behind the intelligence on Iranian military nuclear program are basically THE SAME that FABRICATED evidences on Iraq's WMD program as a justification for the FIASCO we watched for more than 10 years, live on CNN, criminally imposed on the Iraq people.
...
Dear Amanpour, are you sure it is Iran the world has to fear?
According to your logic, USA is the country the world should fear the most today. I prefer USA to the dictators of Iran any day though.
At least the so-called dictators of Iran don't go invading foreign countries without just cause and attacking their neighbors!
1. The NPT does not say Nuclear Weapons States must dismantle their nuclear weapon arsenals. What it does say is that they must "pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control" – There is no timetable for these negotiations and in fact the US and Russia have reduced their arsenals many times over the years.
2. A simplistic point that ignores all historical context over events that occured almost 67 years ago.
3. When? Or are you referring to the political boilerplate language that "All options are on the table"? The same boilerplate language used in all international scenarios?
4. Isreal has never admitted to having any nuclear weapons. And even if you estimate is accurate how precisely is it lllegal for Isreal to have them?
5. And? Since when do they have to?
6. When? And who said it? It was Iran that threatened Isrea'ls existence (and don't bother tryiong to parse words – eliminating the Isreali goivernment is the same as eliminating the Isreali state itself).
7. Yes, something they choose to do, And, by their own choice, they must now demonstrate their compliance with said treaty.
8. Then why are they dragging their feet in these negotiations? Why not throw the doors open to the IAEA on all sites if they have nothing to hide?
9. It is still incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate the sincerety of those statements to the satisfaction of the IAEA and the international community.
10. And who are "these people" you refer to? The IAEA fabricated no such evidence. And as they are the regulatory body in question, it is irrelevant what other gropus may or may not have done or may or may not be doing now.
This entire issue could be resolved in days by Iran. Tell the IAEA that they now have unfettered access with no preconditions to areas and people. Open the doors. Stop the obfuscation. Show the world they only want peace. Defuse the situation and at the same time, be a role model for other countires on how to satidfy the requirtements of the NPT and how to pursue the peaceful use of nuclear energy. After all, what do they have to lose since they are innocent?
.
If you want proof of whether Iran is developing the bomb or not, don't look at politics or religion as they are complete distractions; the politics are so factioned that even the Iranian citizens are unsure of who is running the country at any given time.
The only way is to look at the physics and the engineering :-
1.) The fact that they are enriching Uranium is not as important as how many centrifuges they have. The truth is that they have less than 10,000 centrifuges. To support any credible domestic power production they would need in excess of 100,000 centrifuges. Although power production does not need as much enrichment, they need to manufacture tons of it whereas weapons enrichment only need kilograms. It is estimated that the centrifuges they have are irrelevant for power production but would support the production of 3 warheads a year.
2.) They have announced that they have enriched to 20% U235. A reactor requires 3 to 4% enrichment anything 6% or above will cause a critical reaction without moderation and the reactor would be completely uncontrollable. This has to be a halfway stage to weapons grade fuel.
3.) Th 40 Megawatt heavy water reactor is the ideal device for breeding weapons grade plutonium for the PIT (Plutonium Initiation Trigger); it is unlikely to have any other purpose. It would be interesting to know if they change the fuel regularly and thus are "short burning". This would indicate that they are trying to avoid the production of unwanted Plutonium isotopes such as 240, 241 and 242 that would damage the quality of the bred Plutonium.
It is manifestly obvious to anyone involved in the nuclear industry and the IAEA that they are going for the bomb. What is to be done about it is a matter of debate.
Israel has not signed the NPT and is not party to any other treaty that would restrict their construction or possession of nuclear weapons, so where do you get "illegal" from??? Just because the Muslims wish the Israelis didn't have the bomb has nothing whatsoever to do with their "legality"!
Iran, on the other hand, IS a signatory of the NPT, making any work on nuclear weapons illegal FOR THEM. Even if they file the required 60-day notice of withdrawal from the treaty before they pop-off their first nuke, ala North Korea, the short lead time between withdrawal and detonation demonstrates that work MUST have been done while still a party to the treaty, thus putting them in clear violation of their obligations under said treaty and making their possession of nukes clearly illegal under the "international law" people like you have no understanding of but love to crow about whenever you can use it in an anti-American or anti-Israeli manner.
The fact is that Israel will, eventually, drag the U.S. and the entire world into even another unnecessary war.
AGAIN bringing DESTRUCTION, MISERY and DEATH to hundreds of thousands of people mainly in Iran and like in Iraq and Libya, bring European and American oil companies RUSHING to take a peace of Iranian people's oil reserves...
Dear Amanpour, you should join the world and with your experience fell how disgusting is all this game of supremacy and and lawless grabbing of somebody else's natural resourced under the cover of spreading democracy, fighting terrorism or making sure those with nuclear technology remain the same and keep their monopoly over the rest of the world!
Please, join the people of this world to denounce this calamity!
This is exactly what Pres Obama should tell Americans. He knows it, and sees it as it is.
The US Congress, and some war mongering past and present Republican leaders are misleading the American public,
Iran now needs to set aside its arrogant, stubborn and defiant stand, and commence talking openly with the rest of the world about its nuclear program, and it's stand towards Israel, and the US. There are people who would like to believe Iran have no long term ambition of making any nuclear bomb.
I am 15 years old, and my opinion: each country has equal rights to develope any kind of technology for pride and peace,
n theory your right but one thing you must know is pride and peace never go hand in hand look to your history books wars have been won and lost solely on pride it's not about what country this problem stems from religion and human nature is the sole cause of all war it is a sad reality but it is reality
This is an excellent solution and it happens to be exactly what President Obama is telling the world.
As one who has reported against radical Islam, Iran is not innocent and in Texas terms, "If you act like an animal you need to be put down like one."
@johnny
I agree with you! But if the UN agrees to allow Iran to reduce uranium enrichment to 3.5% along with agreement from Iran to allow inspectors in with unimpeded access and agrees to dismantle some of its nuclear installations, there is no way Israel can defy UN resolution and attack Iran as it would be a serious violation of UN resolution! Furthermore, as long as such agreement is made, I cannot see President Obama refusing to ease sanctions on Iran! But Fareed was right when he said its a possibility that the Republicans in congress could cause problems, accusing the Obama administration of pandering to Iran and betraying Israel just to manipulate the Jewish vote in this critical election year! But what is most important is that Iran and the UN do what is necessary to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution!
So Israel has a few hundred ballistic nuclear missiles and the west wonders why Iran wants their own nuclear program. I really don’t see why America constantly plays the world’s watchdog when their own military incursions of recent years should be treated as nothing more than war crimes. All Americans demand the right to defend themselves so why cant Iran?
Comments seem to get censored here like in many other US news sites.
Amanpour has some good interviews. But, Larijani and Hillary Leverett have the most cogent explanations of the problem. The US is actually using the nuclear issue as an excuse to keep Iran down since Iran stands up to the US. Everybody knows by now that Iran is not developing nukes. But, even if Iran agrees to completely stop its nuclear program the US will come up with a whole bunch of other demands.
On another point, all this talk about a military attack by Israel on Iran is just a joke. Israel does not have the capability and such a stupid act will lead to the termination of the state of Israel which is now trying to get the US to do its dirty work. Obama needs to stop listening to Netanyahu. Unfortunately during an election year, his hands are tied. So, there is no chance for a deal this year.
Anyway, what do we really know about the Israeli nuclear threat?
Well,
Israel had provided SA Aphartheid Government with substantial quantities of tritium
Israel had received 600 tons of uranium from SA Aphartheid Government
Israel helped South African Apartheid government obtained its nuclear weapon.
and finally..
Israel now poses Jericho III that gives it ability nuclear strike capabilities within the entire Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and almost all parts of North Americas, South America and North Oceania.
I hoope one day Amanpoor or anyone else with more knowledge than myself will explain to me this: Why did the West protect and then help Ayatolla Khomeini become the leader of Iran? I lived in France when he resided at Neauphle-le-Chateau. Everyday he received dignitaries from around the world, live on TV, while The Shah of Iran was struggling to keep his supporters at bay. The West had already decided the Shah had to go and Khomeini would replace him. Why? We all know what happened next. Did out leaders make a mistake or did they want to see Iran in the hands of radicals like Khomeini.
For the same reason CNN is broadcasting this documentary – over simplistic and confused western liberalism. To its friends (Shah, Mubarak, Israel), the western logic applies the very strict liberal norms it applies to itself, destabilizing them, while from those who are deemed "different" or "crazy" (Iranian Islamic radicals, Assad, Hamas) very different norms are implicitly expected (thousands to millions can die), and they are also portrayed as "authentic representatives of the people" (unless you are explicitly at war with them). Think Taliban and Bin Laden before 9/11.
Certainly would not trust the Israeli's. Remember the USS Liberty, attacked by Israel with the US flag flying. Israel is not worth a war.
But you would trust Iran?
I am very disappointed with this report. She really seems to favor the view that Iran is a peaceful country that is being pushed into aggression. How could she fail to discuss Iran's outright support of terror groups? Why doesn't she ask about the Iranian weapons found on combatants in Iraq? Just because the Iranian government hasn't declared war on anyone, does not mean that they are not supporting and perpetuating war. How is supplying enemy troops and terror groups with weapons any different than the USSR supplying N. Korean and N. Viet Nam with weapons and pilots?
Or the Rosenbergs giving the Soviets classified U.S secrets about Nuclear weapons development – what is more deplorable than that?
Or how about the American support of the Mujahadeen, or the American creation and support of Death Squads in El Salvador? Why dont you examine and discuss the atrocities perpetuated (and there are many more than these two examples) by our side before attacking the other side. You hold a warmongering and disbalanced world view.
The problem is not Iran developing nuclear energy and on its backdrop nuclear weapon. The problem is Israel id projecting it as danger to their Jewish nation. I think Israel rather than than inking about Muslims having a nuclear weapon should think about living and maintaining cordial relations with its neighbours irrespective of religion. The problem is religion not nuclear weapon and Israel is just making excuses to attack Iran. Why US does not talks about bombing North Korea??? and US is not the godfather or big brother and can do anything that it feels alike. It's time to sit and talk sensible and productive by getting all the gulf nations along with Israel and Iran on table...let there be scope for peace not war..
You seem to forget that Israel has the right to defend herself just as America would not tolerate daily rocket fire over te border. You're either a closet Muslim or just uninformed.
Israel has had almost nothing BUT cordial relations with the two neighbors who have officially recognized their existence, (Egypt & Jordan,) since the treaties were signed. They had always had cordial relations and beyond with Turkey until an Islamist leader in Ankara decided to censure Israel for killing Turkish citizens who were violating international law by trying to run a legal blockade (as recognized by the U.N.) and attacking the Israeli soldiers who were trying to stop them.
Treat Israel right and they treat you right. Commit yourself to their destruction and, well..........
Out of curiosity, are these the same "experts" that cooked up the case against Iraq?
Seriously, are these experts good for anything except their propoganda value?
Why is nobody ever concerned about Israel's 700+ warheads?
They have been attacking neighbors, making 'mistakes' by destroying schools killing children, shooting down civilian airplanes killing passenger, sinking 'friendly' U.S. Navy ships killing American soldiers, bombing hospitals and U.N. buildings using questionable 'bomb' materials, invading foreign countries and lands – in defiance of U.N. resolutions..... WHO is the REAL threat?
Any other country in the world that has ever BOMBED a nuclear plant and gotten away with it? Check Operation Opera in 1981.... Perhaps 'terrorism' is not where we think it is...
Time to ask the REAL questions now....about the REAL enemy of PEACE since the end of WWII.
Why worry about Iran and North Korea which aren't even threatening anyone while one aggressive army that's constantly bombing other countries and has already nuked civilians twice in Japan gets away with it?
It's true.
Can't believe it. You are such a joke!
WTH are you talking about!?! The motor-mouth in Tehran can't seem to speak at all without threatening Israel's very existence and can't seem to end any speech without a threat to America. North Korea not only threatens South Korea, America, and Japan almost weekly, they also torpedo South Korean warships and rain down artillery fire on civilians.
You citizens of the State of Denial need to just shut-up and quit annoying those of us who live in the Real World,(NOT the MTV one!).
The article is common one but the comments are extremely good. I like anderson's
Good and fair show. I think the West should try to be positive even though the regime doesn't have a clear history. It would be the last chance for both sides to resolve this issue. I think the new round of talks and negotiations are in a good atmosphere. It's started with the simple requests not with the complicated ones. I am hopeful and support negotiations and I do believe nobody is able to solve this problem with a strike. It's true Iran will not able to gain its functional nuclear enrichment facilities in a short period of time, but, there are more and more new problems that come which nobody knows how worse they are than the current situation.
CNN is very good in spreading rumours on behalf of US government. Wait does CNN get paid?
Let them have one. I believe in Idea of so called 'balance of regional power' which worked well during the cold war. Anyhow they gonna Bomb Iran soon. It doesn't stop once started as we saw during Iraq War propaganda. There wont be piece in the middle east untill Israel is being stopped and held accountable for violation of human rights and international law by USA themselves. .....Its a joke when they say 'Hammas, a legitimate government chosen by their own people' a terorist group.....hahahah. At some point I agree when someone pretend to be ignorant and try to justify their mass killing and genocide for hand made rockets fed into Israel in retaliation of their stolen Land. Good Luck Pals !!!! Let us be fare and see both faces of coins before making any conclusions.
The way the world handles the Iranian nuclear ambition project will determine the future of nuclear npt.masters and rabbis should live by example.the npt suggest that those countries that are already in possession of nucleaar capabilities should dismantle and those who has the ambition should waive it.so where are we now?
"We found out from those who know: the experts" LOL funniest headline I've read so far on CNN. The experts know as much as any armchair general knows. The only ones who really know, would never let us, the public aka mere sheep misguided by master liars and manipulators sitting in power know ANYTHING that is really going on. Keep theorizing all you want, but we are just being played. That is what I know.
I believe the whole thing against Iran is simply a "Cookup" of american & Israeli politics.. targeting to invade anohter middle eastern country.
There will be no invasion of Iran. There will be strikes, massive, deadly and powerful. Hard enough to set a program back decades. But there will be no invasion.
isnt it interesting these nuclear warheads everycountry in the western world has had its time in recent decades to research ,develop and detinate a warhead of nuclear capabilities. isnt iran entitled to do the same?
they have plenty of reasons to warrant a warhead with the likes of israel constantly antagonising iran.
No Peter. Iran is NOT entitled to it. The regime is a corrupt one. They are not reliable. If they have the expertise to make a nuclear bomb, they will not waste a minute to threaten their own people and the neighboring countries.
Iran is not entitled to nukes simply because they signed a treaty with the international community giving-up any and all rights to develop or possess them. Israel, India, and Pakistan never signed and were, thus, fully within their rights to develop nukes, (although Pakistan's development came about, in part, because of NPT export violations by China).
I agree, that Israeli regime is far more dangerous for world peace than Iranian regime. We know that Israeli regime has got nuclear weapon and NATO should do something with that.
actually it has not be established for sure that Israel has these nuclear weapons...also Iran is a much more dangerous threat as we have seen through their ties with Hezbollah. A tiny little country like Israel which is surrounded by all ARAB states cannot do as much damage as you would think since they will be screwed from all sides if they even think about it
Chris, please get educated for God's sake. You know nothing about Iran's sponsorship of global terror or Theocracy.
Hallelujah brother!
The documentry is quite scary. every thing is good, but you have not covered what ordiniary people of iran think about it becoming the nuclear country. I like the adviser saying that " we are the first class citizen too and we have the same rights as you". I am against any kind of leathel or nuclear weopons deveopment by any country. USA must respect other country and their people too. America has been forming NATO and allience all over the world for its interest. What do you think about the consequence of the allience between iran russia and china? Can west digest it ? If they cant then why do they create this naughty allience? Any revolution in any country should come from that country itself. I dont think USA is strong enough to fight and go to war against iran at this stage. So, i am sure america will find some reason to compromise with iran to save its face. I like the democracy and freedom in US. But it has 2 face. I am just pauzled, how CNN permitted to broadcast this challenging documentry. Weldone Christiane. You are doing the best job and you are one of the true hero.
"I dont think USA is strong enough to fight and go to war against iran at this stage."
Really? Not strong enough? Have you been sleeping under a rock?
Any idiot is strong enough to start a war, or wars, as the US does. And just like the US, not everyone can prevail the long drawn out fight and emerge victorious.
The US lost both Iraq and Afghanistan and has only the enormous death and destruction they've wrought mostly on the innocent and defenceless.
A war with Iran would leave the US castrated. It is a semi neutred nation already anyway, with its nuts hanging by a thread.
hypocritical
As if Iran is a threat to the waste. Stop playing with fear. Iran doesn't like Israel, that's the problem, but it's not a threat to the West. Americain goverment want to kill iranians on the name of Israel. Stop listening to these liars.
I'm glad that americain people are very different than their goverment.
Iran needs to give the UN a Five Finger Death Punch because Iran is Under and Over It already....I...I....the world needs nuclear medicine and there is trillions to make...go IRAN!!! Be the first in nuclear medicine technologies and shut them up!!!
What does Iran want? That's easy. The bomb. To use it against Israel. To use it against us. And, some fools will swear that Israel is more dangerous than Iran. And, that there's no reason not to let Iran have nuclear capability. There will always be fools. That, of course, Iran and North Korea and anyone else who wants it should have nuclear bombs. Simply because we do. The problem is: fools cause us all to die. There have always been fools. There have always been dictators and madmen. Fools never recognize this. Too bad.
Semi geniuses like you have no concept, or sense of proportion. Pakistan and N.Korea are way too unstable compared to Iran. And most people in the world would agree that the American nukes are a greater danger to the world, particularly in the context of it being a predator nation.
This case could only end in a hung jury. There is so much "evidence" for and against both sides that finding the actual truth could not be possible before an actual incident which makes all the evidence irrelevant, because it's too late. There are three countries involved in this horrific game: the U.S. with 330 million people, Iran with 80 million people, and Israel with 7 million people. Which country should be the most nervous? Only one country is an actual declared target. Guess which one. What would you do if you were on the jury?
believing iran wants peaceful nuclear power is like saying hezbollah al qatar are peaceful organizations lolol its a joke to assume iran isnt building nuclear weapons why be so secretive than we know iran funds terrorism we know iran has murdered across the globe so to say they arent building a weapon or we havent seen a actual weapon is comical
how many nuclear weapons in Israel?
How many times has Israel's government called for the annihilation of a neighboring state? (0).
How many neighboring states could Israel annihilate with it's suspected 200-weapon arsenal? (All of them).
How many states has Israel attacked with nuclear weapons since it supposedly first developed the capability? (0, again).
How many really, truly believe Iran wouldn't use nukes against Israel or American interests in the Gulf? (0, again).
I know who I trust......
Another day another anit-Iranian propoganda peice on CNN- is anyone suprised anymore?
Just like during thebuild upto the Iraq war,CNN are more than happy to be the USG mouthpeice. Whatever happened to independant journalism?
Global hysteria whipped up by those who profit by it. Iran knows it would be suicide to attack Israel or Europe with nuclear weapons. Come on, people, wake up. Iran won't start Armageddon, and neither will North Korea. The cold war was a great money machine for the Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about. This is just the latest scam. We must spend hundreds of billions to be ready to fight the Bad Guys ! Think. What country on Earth would challenge the US military to a war?
In a country, where people within the governing system call the president a liar and the president accuses his opponent (again within the ruling system) of corruption, no one knows who to believe. The question is, why should western countries believe claims made by Iranian supreme leader that they would not make nuclear bomb??!!!!!!!!!!
Look I've got my Tivo set up for this thing. Whens it going to happen. Nothing but previews of the coming attraction. I figure a 2 day war at tops. Cause no miricle out of Israel is going to take much longer than say 7 days. Anything other than a 2 day mircle would blow the whole deal. Anything over 7 means Gods wrath is being aroused against his people. (you could try that one). And well you could probabaly overrun it in 8 days.
Stabalizing Eastern europe was one thing. They were really suprised they were when everyone just chucked them to Stalin and said here ya go buddy. I mean they had to be sorta shocked. Its got to be a lot of trouble trying to subjugate that many countries.
Now lets say your trying to subjugate an Iraq. Occupied true. Now how do ya do it? Well there could be like a template to subjugate people a tried and true way used in the past. In fact a whole region. Now I here some saying we don't have a match. Because people that try to put blocks in holes that don't match. Don't win. Its kind of an army test. They use it to make sure your not loading your gun with waffles or hazelnuts or something. They had problems before ww1 with stuff like that. Then there is sense. You get the sense that because Iran has a pipleine to their refinery right from that second largest oil reserve in the world that they discovered right before they invaded. Cause well Saddam as the story goes was sanctioned and things really tighted up after they found kirkuk I guess. I don't know what they call it. There is no reason not to know it. But then again hey you can overlook a fact or two. ABC Night news and NBC nightly news and CBS do also. Of course they are all busy working on uniformity and fact. We know that. Stay tuned.
Very shallow report, all means were used to present us only one side, Iranian. Note that officials or intelligence of no other country was interviewed or discussed. If you look back you can find several examples that Amanpour is not impartial when she reports from Middle East. You can look on the Wiki page about it. Being of Iranian origin, it is not surprising that also in this report she presents us only one part of the picture. Shape one can expect more professionalism from CNN
Iran Nuclear = A completely destabilized middle east.
But it will!
if they do..at some point they may the last thing to do is shoot bombs at theM..THEN WE BECOME THE THREAT..WE BECOME THE EVIL..CAN I GO SHOOT MY CRAZY NEIGHBOR IF I KNOW HE JUST GOT A GUN..WE MUST BE VERY CARE NOT TO BECOME WHAT WE HATE..LET,S STAY A SUPER POWER ONLY.. NOT A NATION.OF SUPER KILLER..OR SIDE WITH THOSE WHO THINK BOMB.S MAKE PEACE..MAYBE SHORT TERM..BUT MASS KILLING TODAY WILL NEVER BE FORGOT..AND FEELING SAFE WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST..
Just buckle and back down Iran! Shut those pointless sites down and prove us all wrong!! There is no way around this!!
Why is Iran not letting the nuclear inspectors go where the nuclear inspectors want to go and where the rest of the world wants the nuclear inspectors to go? It's nonsense that Iran has no nuke bomb ambitions because why else would they hide from the world what they are doing?
The US is fast approaching (in fact may have already gone past) the time when it could have helped give the region at lease a chance for peace. I think US influence was irrepararably damaged when it refused to honor the results of the Palestinian election which helped cause the rift between The PA and Hamas, and led to several uprisings.
The israelis have been under the gun so long that they no longer have any pretense about who will have rights in a 'Jewish" state. It would be a "Greater Israel" in which the Palestinians would have secondary cititzen rights in the parts of this greater israel where they would have conditional autonomy. In effect it would be an apartheid state.
We may no longer be able to prevent a wider war which would turn nuclear very quickly. Perhaps the israelis have already come to this conclusion, which is why they do not seem to fear the escalation that would inevitably come from a 1st strike on Iran. What worries the US so much (and what the Israelis already know) is that we know we cannot be sure of doing the type of damage to the Iranian program that must be done unless tactical nuclear weapons are used in the strike. If israel uses tactical nuclear weapons with tacit Us approval hold onto your hats.
Who is the world? Who is the international community? It’s the west, I really doubt some African nation is part of any decision making about Iran's nuclear intentions!!! Would you have to be dreaming that the only issue standing between Iran and the west is this so called nuclear program which by far Iran is very behind!!!! it’s like I have finally discovered paper but I yet to use it and I don’t have anything to write with as yet but I am working on it!!!! Nevertheless the standoff is the
1. Nuclear program
2. The support of Hezbollah
3. The relation with the Syrian regime
4. The strong Iranian influence in Iraq and Afghanistan!!
5. The strategic relationship with Russia (I could say China but they will sell you out any day.. but at the moment they support indirectly due to economical demands and also like to put some pressure on the west..Don’t forget Taiwan!!)
All these are very complex issues which cannot be solved over night!! It’s like the clash of the titans the Russians would not like to have a nuclear Iran yet they will support their mini program for now due to other interests in the M.E and Europe and to pressure the US. This media saga of where this is heading will continue, its primary goal is to develop a public opinion, forming a certain image which is yet to be completed!!! So one day you will see Iranian officials shake hands with the west and the next they will be fighting it off on TV.... the most appropriate fighting ground in this day and age!! Mind you the above points mentioned their just what we might think of!! but there's still more!!
what do you expect from amanpour...like zakaria, they are cnn apologists for anything muslim. Of course, if it concerns israel, then they are only too eager to close their eyes to reality. If say any of the UK, france, italy, spain, russia, china or the US was threatened with being wiped off the face of the map, well, I can assure you amanpour would be having a much different tune. What is it about these so called journalists that give them the right to claim they have any journalistic ethics of integrity....all this is a cover for obama and his chances for re-election, and iran is definitely a problem for obama...so rather than protect his "unshakeable ally", he would rather put this off for 2013 or later....yet in his campaign in 08' he promised to NEVER ALLOW IRAN TO ACQUIRE NUCLEAR WEAPONS...but as with most things with this president, he says things merely for political expediency. Isnt that the hope and change we all expected from the guy from "outside the beltway" . The man definitely has a very curious foreign policy and if he gets a second term, out will come his leanings as tought to him by reverand wright, edward said, rashid khalidi, samantha power and zbig brzezhinski....
in short, this president is nothing of what you thought he would be....he is an anti american ashamed to be american guy...just ask his fat assed wife how proud she is to be american.....
A little pro Iranian, don't ya think? She asks terribly leading questions and recruited people she wanted to support the tone of her news story. So Ahmadinejad said he wants to wipe Israel off the map, and she spins it to mean politically? I'm sure when he denied the Holocaust it was just a metaphor for politics too.....
The Iranian "threat" which has been promoted by the "neocon" US foreign policy mavens, with the knee-padded, yellow livered, Neville Chamberlain styled US corporate media in tow, alongside all those others who benefit from war – is another version of the "threat" posed by Iraq's (nonexistent) weapons of mass destruction. In other words, it is yet another baseless, paranoid conspiracy theory, manufactured by professional manipulators and myth makers, and designed to terrorize the US public and bring them into line via a new round of fear-mongering in keeping with the climate that was established in the immediate wake of 9/11. This fear strategy is a time-tested psychological weapon to subjugate and silence the people, employed by rogue governments throughout history.
Regardless of whether Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, a nuclear power program or a combination of the two, it is illogical (without looking below the surface) that the United States should prioritize Iran as an enemy, especially since Iran has not attacked anyone – not even their neighbors – in over 250 years – and shows no intent of doing so in the future. However, a quick look at why this issue should be of such interest to the US – 10,000 miles away on the other side of the world – reveals that US mid-east policy (alongside many other areas of government policy) is totally under the control of Israel.
In both the previous (Bush) and current (Obama) administrations, a very large proportion of senior officials are known to be dual Israeli-US citizens. Obviously, Iran has long been considered an enemy to Israel, but only in recent years has the US taken such a close interest.... i.e. from the time that many of these dual Israeli-IS citizens were installed in senior positions in the 2001 Bush administration. This leads to an obvious and very blatant conflict of interest issue: Should dual citizens of a foreign nation – to which a subject has declared allegiance – be permitted to take positions of authority in our nation? Imagine the outcry if it was discovered that just *one* senior government official was a citizen of, Japan, for example, or Germany, or Brazil.... or, God forbid, Venezuela or Communist China?! But as regards Israel, nobody even raises an eyebrow, probably in fear of being "ad hominemed" as "anti-Semitic", a Jew hater, or even a "holocaust denier". These are powerful and persuasive factors that ensure the people's individual and collective silence and complicity.
Since the demise of the Soviet empire by 1992, the US military-industrial sector suddenly required a new boogeyman to replace the much ballyhooed "Communist threat". It had no choice – the tentacles of the defense/security/intelligence sector had so metastasized within the core of the US economy since the 1950s and the height of the Cold War, that a scaling back (of the military-industrial complex) to a size in keeping with the perceived threat, would have reduced defense and related spending by a huge factor, and thus caused a correspondingly massive recession in the heavily subsidized militarized section of the US economy, already inflated to a disproportionate extent. In other words, this was never a practical option for "instant" transformation away from a heavily militarized economy.
During the Clinton years, that administration, however, did start to make gradual cuts in military spending; this utterly enraged a certain group of neoconservative hawks in DC, many being the same set of uber-hawkish dual US Israeli citizens who were appointed in droves to the 2001 Bush White House. In response to Clinton's cuts, they wrote their landmark essay "Rebuilding America's Defenses". It's original form was so outlandish that it was "moderated" to gain the wider appeal of the mainstream – but it still remained an utterly paranoid, extremist document in which the agenda called for not only only a massive increase of defense etc spending, but also the ability to wage simultaneous wars in multiple theaters, install space-based weaponry, engage in "full spectrum dominance", and even develop biological weapons that targeted "specific ethnic genotypes" – in other words people of Middle eastern non-Jewish heritage – a Eugenics lookalike, except with the aim of targeting "undesirable" racial types – obviously Arabs and Muslims... in foreign lands. The document also stated that "to gain public and Congressional acceptance, the process of transformation would likely be a long and gradual one, absent a catalyzing catastrophic incident, like a New Pearl Harbor".
Significantly, this mega-racist message of intentional global thuggery was released on September 10, 2000. Iran was one of the many nations in the crosshairs of hatred. Exactly *one year* later, September 10, 2001, Donald Rumsfeld, then defense secretary, stood up in the US Senate and announced that $2.3 TRILLION had "gone missing" from the Pentagon – the largest instance of mass fraud and theft in global history. The task of investigating this massive disappearance of the nation's money was being undertaken by accountants attached to the US Navy budget analysts offices, which were headquartered in a recently refurbished section of the Pentagon. The following day, September 11, 2001 – we all know what happened. The case of the missing $2.3 Trillion was quickly and conveniently abandoned and never questioned again. Those who were investigating the mega-fraud were killed when AA Flight 77 plowed into their offices, destroying all the record and the backups. The 19 alleged "fundamentalist Muslim" hijackers gave the neocons, the Israeli hardliners and the US war machine the greatest windfall they could have ever hoped for in their wildest wet dreams. Right after the Twin Towers came down, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said, in an unguarded moment – probably brought on by glee and excitement – that "this (attack) is very good news for Israel".... before awkwardly backtracking and rephrasing his comment.
This was 10.5 years ago. Since then we have spent over $3 Trillion in the so-called "war on terrorism", killed perhaps as many as 2 million innocents, destroyed portions of our own Constitution and Bill of Rights, signed acts into law that are more suited to a police state than a "free republic", trashed our economy, and more is on the way. The Obama Administration has pursued an identical policy set to its predecessors.... if anything, they have ramped up the agenda of hatred by expanding the war in Afghanistan, spilling over into Pakistan, and now they plan on attacking Iran. Or, should I rephrase that: the Israeli Likudist hardliners, who have the Obama Administration wrapped around their pinkies, have strong-armed the US into going full on with the Israeli agenda.
Unfortunately, the corporate media is populated by "analysts" like the author of this article, who appear to be interested in furthering the same agenda, while scaring and dumbing down the American people into meek obeisance.
Zbigniew Brzezinski (American/Polish dual citizen and National Security Advisor to Jimmy Carter at a time when Poland was still a Soviet satellite state and member of the Warsaw Pact, thus making him a citizen of an "enemy" state.)
you are all speculating until there is proof then its all just guessing if there is a war with israel and iran the only outcome will be loss of innocent civilian lives like every other war.
there are tooooooooooooooooooo many "if " in this article~! nothing could be confirmed.
Why don't they just open the doors and let the world see their enrichment program.I don't think we would be at this point now if they did this years ago.
Just as you'd prefer your neighbor's wife to spread her's to you, but not your wife to anyone else? Kinda conveniently forgot that Israel doesn't allow inspections either?
If Israel can have nuclear weapons, why should not iran? so that the power of the conflict could be a draw
Israel: non-signatory of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and, thus, entitled to develop nukes by virtue of never having signed away such rights in an international treaty.
Iran: signatory of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and, thus, NOT entitled to develop nukes by virtue of having signed away such rights in an international treaty.
Get it now?
Iranian nation had an equal right to self-defense as Israel ....
Israel should stop military regime massacred the Palestinian people, if not israel burned by Iran nuclear ! , AGREE ?!
I say give them 12 nukes with a 2500 mile range. Explain for each one used, 12 will land on their country. IF they actually ever use them, problem solved.
There is no short cut to having a dialogue. That is the only way to give peace a chance.
This presentation is very well done, but it does not reflect the true picture. Saudi Arabia, quite different than the "Zionist Enemy" of Iran, Israel, is just as fearful as Israel of an Iranian nuclear capability. The Saudis and other Gulf neighbors of Iran know far better than the people that Christiane Amanpour interviewed what is happening in Iran. They know that a nuclear Iran will be the preeminent power in the Middle East, will control Middle Eastern oil, will control the Strait of Hormuz. Further, if Iran succeeds in a destructive attack on Israel, which no Muslim countries have been able to do, Iran will become the unchallenged leader of the Muslim World. It is well reported that the Saudis have urged the US to preemptively attack the Iranian nuclear capability. It is well reported, that, lacking an affirmative response from the US, the Saudis are looking elsewhere for support of a nuclear capability of their own. If, as Obama has claimed, there is no urgency for action because Iran has not yet decided to build a nuclear weapon, why has the huge concentration of US military power in the area of the Strait of Hormuz taken place? The lack of credibility does not just apply to the Iranians.
Bomb Iran. Just wipe out all their installation. No more games and stalling tactics.
Underground centrafuses may be in hardened bunkers but require above ground resoureces to operate.also if they were spinning and a few bunker busters were bropped in they would be damaged.
I don;t see why we are waiting. Are we waiting to see the mushroom cloud over Israel or the USA
You don't see anything clearly because you are not too bright.
So why nuclear? They sit on one of the largest petroleum deposits in the world. Yet the invest nothing in updating their petroleum industry. And one of the "experts" tells us that we won't trust them even at declared sites . . . duh. That's the point. They have UNdeclared sites that WE found. And you wonder why we don't trust them at declared sites? For a program with nothing to hide, they sure hide a lot of stuff. Only a simpleton would just blindly trust in this situation.
Intent is really the key, and their intent hinges on a fatwa. Well what happens next month when he changes his fatwa? Or someone new takes over and changes the fatwa? That's the problem with trusting a dictatorship (or in this case theocracy . . . run by one man). Intent can change over night. So capability is all you can really look at. You can then base it on past intent (which has not been good). As for Israel attacking, I'd say leave them on their own. Make it clear, if you attack, you're on your own. The YOYO policy. An attack had better mean something, and better be based on better intelligence than we have now. But I wish this piece would have looked at Iran's actions in the past. I realize that using a nuke is a lot different than supporting terrorism with conventional rockets, etc or taking hostages from a democratic country, but it would put American and world view of Iran in a perspective that doesn't just look at the words of an Iranian mouthpiece or some "experts" that appeared to be pretty bias (though I realize you can splice anyone's interview to make them look that way).
It amazes me to see that there are so many Americans posting on here that are Traitor's to their own country? If you think Iran is so great and they're the ones that should be trusted not the west, why not move there instead of living in the US?
So you think, being honest is being a traitor? And the stupid myopic only have the right to remain on the American main land? from one loyal American to another; When did your mother and father descend from the trees, monkey?
Buildings under ground producing Peaceful items or Weapons of Mass Destruction my guess is if you put building underground you do not want others to see what you are doing like building a Weapon of Mass Destruction.
Very good and honest journalism. It is refreshing for a change to put the interest of our nation and us Texans before the interest of the likes of AIPAC and the criminals who make money from these conflicts. We are tired of paying the high price of Israeli arrogance and stupidity. Let them fight their own wars maybe they wont be so quick to attack everybody.
Letter from christian brother to muslim brother....
Dear brother. I want to apologize for all the troops invading your countries. I am sorry for all dead brothers, sisters and children. I cried when I realized that "christian" western countries with their leaders and governments are stealing your resources and they are not saving you from brutality. They bring you brutality instead of helping you. I didn't know that. Our Media lie to us. They manipulate us. Actually not many real christians live in our countries any more. They are divided. They don't obey God's law. Not even basic rule of love and forgiveness. They don't go to the temples any more and they talk to God only when they need help. I know you pray, fast and do all staff that Allah asks you to do. But you suffer a lot and it seams that nothing is changing. I want you to know, that there are christian brothers and sisters in western countries who suffer with you. You cannot imagine how big pain is in our hearts. How ashamed we are for our leaders and governments. We had no rights to go to your country and pretend that we are helping you. I want you to know brother that the truth is spreading out. People in western countries start opening their eyes. They speak about the truth on the internet. Because Media is corrupted and it belongs to reach people, you will not find the truth in Media, only less important things and lies. We are in the hands of few powerful. I would say they are like gods who manipulate whole world, but they are more like Evil who brings suffering to innocent people. The saints of these days are those who are being killed on their quest to the truth. Hundreds of them die each year. The last place where we can search for the truth is the internet. But I think the leaders are going to stop it soon. If it happens, the truth will never find the way to the people. So, my dear muslim brother. It's hard to speak about love, but I want you to know, that in those evil western countries, there are christian brothers and sisters who suffer with you and fight for you. We don't figth with guns, but with prayers, fasting and searching and spreading the truth.
with love
your christian brother
Sallam alaikum
PS: I know your brothers didn't attack NY or London. It was just manipulation, so that leaders could justify the war...
Two facts appear to have been overlooked in the case of a Nuclear Iran:
1) What are Iran's long-term energy needs. Is there, in fact, a projected deficit between Iran's energy demand and its ability to supply that demand with non-nuclear, current resources.
The most important question that everyone overlooks is,
2) What is the Middle Eastern Arab nation's response to nuclear weapons in Iran. Most countries have the capacity to quickly acquire or manufacture their own defensive nuclear weapons. The results of a nuclear Iran could be far worse: Nuclear Saudi Arabia, Nuclear Bahrain, Nuclear UAE, etc.?
All of these countries will be compelled to acquire their own, individual, nuclear defense. None, including Iran, has the infrastructure to manage nuclear weapons and/or peaceful energy applications.
The consequences of a Nuclear Iran are far worse than just Iran itself. It would be a major expansion of world nuclear capacity, effectively making non-proliferation a work of deadly fiction.
Current safeguard agencies - IAEA, EU Atomic Energy Agency, etc. - have demonstrated that they are incapable of controlling the spread of nuclear weapons and its underlying technologies. Part of the current problem is that anyone with enough money can purchase nuclear materials. It's just well beyond the reach of anyone but a nation-state.
However, we forget that the first nuclear bombs were quite simple and not as sophisticated as current technology would indicate. Iran probably has the capacity to produce a simple uranium bomb already if it wanted/needed to. In fact, the bomb used by the US in WWII Japan was a "simple" uranium bomb. Indeed, Germany and Japan had already developed their own nuclear bombs by the end of WWII. In fact, the USA was behind the German/Japanese development programs.
Thus, Iran's claims of peaceful intent might not be a sham to disguise its "real" intent. However, given the size of uranium bombs - remember the WWII pictures? - Iran probably does not have the missile delivery capacity, despite its capacity to produce a much heavier uranium bomb.
It is important to remember who originally sold nuclear materials to Iran, Pakistan, India, etc. Indeed, the European Atomic Energy Agency even tried to sell nuclear, bomb grade materials to Argentina!
Yet, the real historic fact is that WWII Japan and Germany were far ahead of the USA. It is important to remember where Japan developed its WWII bomb - North Korea! At the end of WWII, Russia "inherited" Japan's nuclear technology, effectively starting the arms race. Japan had completed much of its domestic "secret" development at the now famous Fukushima nuclear facility - not always a "peaceful" location.
Since that time, no nuclear regulatory agency - i.e., IAEA - has been capable of containing nuclear proliferation. In the end, it is possible that Iran really needs to supplement its own fossil fuel capacity, as we all do. Nuclear energy has been the "cheap" and "clean" alternative for many nations.
Unfortunately, Amanpour's coverage is very, very weak on history; and, it is history that could predict the nuclear future! Unfortunately, nuclear historians don't have a CNN web page or a fabricated set of "facts".
Actually, we used one of each on Japan: The Trinity test was a plutonium device, as was the Nagasaki bomb, while the Hiroshima device was the previously-untested uranium bomb. The heaviest and most space-consuming parts of those bombs were the conventional explosives used in them. Modern high-explosive materials make the required size of the device far smaller; remember that we had 155mm (6.1" diameter) nuclear cannon shells by 1963 and that in 1957 we deployed 203mm (8" diameter) nuclear cannon shells that were tested at 40-kilotons (the Hiroshima bomb was only about 15-kilotons). Using modern materials and knowledge, building a nuke that weighs about as much as a soldier's full field pack (~60lbs.) shouldn't be too difficult. Miniaturization of weapon components is not the problem people would be led to believe. Going from a first test to a deployable warhead on an already-extant missile should take less than 2 years.
If I were them, I would develop all the technology to build a few bombs without an actual test. That would let their nice neighbors know not to mess with them with a lot of foreign help, like Saddam did. In that way, you get the insurance of a nuclear deterrent without becomming a nuclear target, as would certainly be the case if they tested an actual bomb.
That is why they will not agree to get rid of their enriched uranium. It is their insurance policy. Testing a bomb would lock them into a dangerous and very expensive regional arms race. One mistake with bombs on missiles is your last.
2 simple questions to Mr. Larijani: (1) With respect to the US speaking to Iran, you said, "one has to talk with even his worse enemy". Is Iran ready to speak with Israel? A country that your leaders do not even quote by name? Please quote ANY rhetoric from tour leaders in the matter. Is it only a myth in Israel and the West that Iran will never recognize Israel right of existence?
(2) What is the civilian purpose of enriching Uranium at 20% , as Iran has recently announced it achieved? Nuclear electricity production, worldwide, is using 3-5% enriched LEU (low enriched uranium). 20% and up is considered HEU – weapon grade material. Are you planning to export massive quantities of medical use Uranium (12.5%)?
This article is clearly biased towards iran's side of the argument. the reason why i say this is because I have been studying the buying pattern of the US government and they have been stocking up over 30 billion bullets in Kuwait for M16 Rifles. This would only be for an invasion of a country. The only country that we would invade right now would be either Iran or Pakistan. Right now, we can rule out Pakistan because we are already inside of Pakistan and we have no true need to work in that country. Iran on the other hand, is threatening many things to us now including nuclear war.
when pakistan the hotbed of terrorism are allowed to have and make more nukes, why can't IRAN have nukes.
US knew when the pakis were making nukes and US still gave aid to pakistan in the amount of billions of dollars and pakistan made more nukes and festered terrorism with the billions of dollars
nukes falling into terrorist hand is a definate possibily because of pakistan, which is a failed bankrupt country run by corrupt politicians and a terrorist supporting and breeding army. But US thinks they have pakistan under control and stay mum about the real threat of paki nukes.
ISREAL is most worried about IRAN nukes and USA is dancing to the tune of israeli lobbist , but the sad part is we all should be worried about the nukes that the terrorist country pakistan has that will surely land in the hand of terrorist.
if the terrorist breeding, failed bankrupt country like pakistan can have nukes, built with USA's aid amounting to billions of dollars every year.
WHy can't Iran have nukes.
A couple of things of note.
Though the program starts off by mentioning the reactor that was given the Shah, with American blessings, it failed to note that that reactor was fueled with actual weapons grade material (not the 20% non-weapons useful that spinners are trying to portray as the almost weapons grade, but 90+% enriched material) and that there was practically no monitoring planned for that material, again, with full US knowledge. One wonders if the questions that that bit of information would raise about America's violations of the NPT and the meme that Iran wants weapons grade nuclear material had something to do with its omission, more than editing for time.
Secondly, the premise that the attempt by Mousavi to re-run Operation Ajax was 'the first event in the Arab Spring' is as ridiculous as the notion that the Arab Spring was caused by Bush's empty proclomations about 'promoting democracy'. That the Iranian government was able to deal with that attempt without the use of guns or a complete oppression of diversity of political parties almost certainly played a role in setting off the Arab Spring, as did the fueling of Bushehr. Seeing that it was possible for a ME democracy to withstand an effort by someone with a power base to stage a coup that the US wanted without having to discard the essence of democracy, and that for all its reputation as the decider of what was and was not allowed to happen in the ME as the 'only remaining superpower', the US was unable or unwilling to enforce its longstanding position that Iran was not allowed to have nuclear energy, must have played a role in the populations of Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia thinking that it was possible to topple those the US had decided would stay in power, and to replace them with not just different US strawbosses, but with democratic governments.
Third, the repetition of the American viewpoint that the Iranian government must PROVE to American satisfaction, that the Iranian civilian nuclear energy program has no weapons component, without mentioning that there is no evidence that America is anymore willing to be convinced of that than a paranoid is willing to be convinced that his neighbour is not plotting against him undercuts the attempts at balance that the inclusion of people pointing out that the US is unwilling to accept even its own intelligence services telling it that that program has no weapons component tries for.
PS, it was the nuclear scientists at Livermore, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge who stated that 20% enriched uranium was non-weapons useful, and that it should be regarded as no different than 3-5% enriched material. And a little experiment that you can do at home to see how misleading the 'expert' who said that most of the work in increasing enrichment to 90% was done in the 0-20 percent process. Get three large glasses, fill one with an even mix of black and white marbles of the same size. Leave that glass out in the sun for a few hours, then blindfolded sort them into the other two glasses by colour (at least some of the black ones will be just slightly warmer) The glass you've put those you thought were white into is the enriched side of the output of your 'centrifuge', the black glass is the 'waste stream'. You'll note that the 'waste stream' contains a fair number of the wanted white marbles, while your 'enriched' glass contains almost as many unwanted black marbles as white. See how many times you have to process the 'enriched' result of each step to get first to 1% more white than black, then 10% more white than black, then 20% more. Unless you started with extremely large glasses, you'll probably need to start a second and third lot through the process, combining them together at some point, to get to 10%. If you don't want the 'waste steam' marbles to clutter up your environment, you'll also want to start reprocessing the waste So, now that you have one glass of 20% enriched marbles, start working towards 40%. Notice how many more white marbles you are putting in your waste stream, and how many more time you have to reprocess that waste to get it back up to where it was when you enriched the batch it came from, even though your experience in getting to 20% has made you a lot more competent at feeling that small temperature variation that you were when you made the 1% enriched glass. So, though the effort to get to 20% can be said to have have solved the problems of getting to 90%, you can see that it can't be said to have been most of the work needed to actually get to 90%
Nuclear Weapons in the World:
US: 10,500 – 12,000
Russia: 13,000 – 20,000
France: 400 – 482
China: 400 – 410
United Kingdom: 200
Israel: 100
India: 85 – 90
Pakistan: 15 – 25
Iran: 0
Someone please explain to me how a country with 0 nuclear weapons can be considered a global threat when just between the US and Russia there are enough to blow the world up several times over. If the world wants to prove that they are against nuclear weapons then every country that has them needs to publicly televise the dismantling of every single nuclear weapon. otherwise they are nothing but hypocrites.
Hosagi;
You missed N Korea with about 5 – 6 nukes, and antique delivery systems.
Pakistan and NK are comparatively unstable countries and would have been attacked by someone by now, if not for their nukes. No one likes these things, but they clearly assure safety from the world's predator nations, chiefly the USA.
It never ceases to amaze me at the ignorance shown by all sides to this debate. The US has stunk up world politics since the mid 70's when the Iranian revolution took place and removed the Shah and the peanut farmer twiddled his thumbs and pondered what to do! The Saudi's hate the Iranians, the Iranians, hate the Iraqi's, the Iraqi's probably hate the Yemeni's, and everybody hates the Israeli's ! Since the US supports the Israeli's, everybody hates the US! Let's see, China hates Japan and Russia, but likes the North Koreans and everyones concerned about Pakistan who hates India, and doesn't care for the Afghans. The Scandinavian countries don't hate anyone because no one hates them and the fact that it's too cold anyways to hate. But my wife hates the cold so I guess she hates the Scandinavians. I think the time is right for a "World Spring" where the collective citizens of the world kick these lying, manipulating, greedy, garbage wrapped in skin politicians out of office, invite them all to a world summit, and accidentally drop a nuke on their secret remote meeting place! But again, everyone would hate the fallout!
Iran's regime would be seen as an aggresive characteristic towards some countries like Israel but I don't think that any possibilities exist in the future that Iran will be use its own nuclear weapon in terms of possession of his own arsenal. As everyone know that, Israel has own nuclear weapon so I believe the equilibrium needs in the middle east in terms of nuclear power and this equilibrium only can be maintain through Iran's nuclear power or Turkey's. Israel shouldn't be free in the middle east for the sake of whole middle east. Because no one can be sure that what Israel will do in the future if hers advantages in the risk. Even Israel would be use his own nuclear power against any country in the middle east. I also believe that any operation against Iran's nuclear facilities will not work because these facilities heavily protected and they under 70 meter of the earth.
I shudder to think what would would've happened if John McCain had been elected, then died leaving Sarah Palin in the White House. How would she have handled all the threats our country faces every day? The horror...
Well, a majority of peaceful ventures into nuclear energy has turned up weapons, and if Iran indeed goes nuclear, China and Russia will have solidified their power base; guess it's time to learn Chinese. 20 to 30 years down the road, they'll own the world...and all those who complained about the U.S. will wish for the good'ol days of the U.S. being world cop. History will be the judge.
I think that Hallmark should make fear based propaganda cards, that way they could just pick one for the occasion.
Impressive graphic art work. Expert Intel...yeah I bet. Whatever intel gets the the war fired up is the intel the US/Israel wants to know about.
amanpour muslim first always a muslim defends islam as peaceful contary to the facts
It's amazing to me how Zakaria and now Amanpour are allowed by their editors to prinit Iranian propaganda in an american publication.
A nuclear Iran cannot and will not be tolerated, without horrible consequences.
I can honestly say for the first time how proud i am of seeing my fellow americans wake up and QUESTION the manipulating "news" and "reporting" of cnn. cheers x
All this talk about Iran being honest is a joke. The Quaran says that it's OK for a Muslim to lie to the infadels. (that's you and me folks).... they don't care at all about mis representing their intentions. Exactly the reason you can't trust any Muslim when what they are doing is directed at non-muslims. It's all just propoganda folks. Wise up before it's to late. Islam is about taking over the world, not just spreading the word.
The Iranian bomb question is simple. Ignore it. They could never use it, or let someone else use it without suffering from open nuclear war. A war they would not win.
Nuclear weapons are white elephants, expensive, over glorified, and useless. The only time one was used in history was when no one really knew what they could do and those that did know would not tell. Currently, a use of a nuclear weapon would most certainly cause a global war against the country of its origin.
Would Iran bomb Israel? Why would they? Islam does consider it to be a holy site and the resulting bomb would kill millions of Muslims from fall out in the region. The answer is understandably that Iran will never use a nuclear weapon against Israel as a first strike option but only as a retaliation weapon.
So the question now is why are those in our countries that are so willing to start a war and possible a nuclear war with Iran? My answer is simple and old as time, greed.
The American University professor's opinions are foolish. Look at Iran's history of violence and foolishness. Look at their people who don't trust their government. Iran is complex, but make no mistake, they are not honest.
He who sows evil, it comes out in his own garden. Violence begets more violence.
Let's give every country a nuke and tell them to "Stand Their Ground." Works so well for us here why not let the whole world in on it?
The simple fact of the matter is the more nuclear armed nations the closer the Doomsday Clock gets to midnight. Nuclear power has long been heralded as the ultimate 'clean' energy; and yet now after Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukishima, many of nuclear energy's proponents are starting to realize the more we have of these things the higher the opportunity for error. You let something like this out of the box and there will be misunderstandings, there will be human error. The world is just ever so slightly turning away from nuclear power and toward the sun, wind and ocean currents to generate power. Iran does not need nuclear power, and it only takes one despot (anywhere in the world) to shower ruin upon us all. And someday that will happen. It is the human way ...
The Primary source of suspicion, at least in the United States, is because of how different their government is run. Think of Cold War Russia. Obviously, we're talking about potential war for a long span of time. but we chose to feel hostile towards them because we as a capitalist society are biased towards a totalitarian society. Iran's claims could easily be true. After all, the videos did explain that we have absolutely no proof of a nuclear weapons program that is underway right now. The problem is that as Americans we see ourselves superior instead of equal with others, and therefore with a mindset of clear superiority, we can't accept the differences of another government. The reason everything seems to be so hush hush in Iran is because it's the way that the country is run. Everything is state run, and therefore, the people are given little chance to speak out. As a result, people outside of Iran only see what Iran's leaders say. Again, this suspicion comes into play, as most people would most likely trust Iran's people more than their leaders. The Iranian Nuclear threat is completely possible, but we as humans always come to consider a situation assuming that other humans have the worst intentions.
Finally some decent journalism and especially on this topic which has been so horribly misrepresented by the media.
CHRISTIANNE AMANPOUR IS AT HER BEST – HOWEVER THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN AND ITS NUCLEAR PROGRAM IS SUBJECT TO SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS.
USA AND ITS ALLIES NEED TO MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS....IT IS A KNOWN FACT THAT THEY TARGET OIL RICH NATIONS AND CREATE WAR TO SERVE THEIR PURPOSE. BESIDES THEY ARE OCEANS AWAY AND NO HARM HAPPENS TO THEIR LAND>
C'mon guys..............don't you read the all Abrahamic religion history?
Jews, Christian and Islam........Arab and Jew has never really live peacefully side by side........both of those race too arrogant.............don't you all see that?
Let seriously dumb it down. Invade Iran, temporarily take Iranian oil off the market, expect to pay a higher price at the pump. Asian countries do sourced their fuel from Iran. But if Iranian oil goes off the market, Asian countries will have to buy Saudi Oil, therefore we will see higher oil prices. If Iran gets wind of an ivasion, they will detaonate their oil fields and refineries, in turn expect higher prices at the pump; for the short to medium term. I am not pro Israel, no I am pro Arab, just pro oil. Oh please I am not interested in Anwar oil, as the Canadians would have sucked that region dry a long time ago, (if there was serious amounts of oil)..People like Saddm and Kadaffi weren't the niceest people, but i liked their ability to sell me cheap fuel.
have anyone ever thought that they might wanna protect themselves from israel and all these "liberations" done by the west ?
Does anyone actually change their opinions after reading these comments? Do the 'Israel supporters' change to be 'anti-Israel' after a pro-palestine person gives off 10 good reasons why Israel is at fault? Or do the Iran lovers become Anti-Iran after a series of comments about why Iran is a threat to the world? If not, really, why this plethora of comments? Just read it and forget it.!!!
I'll make this short and to the point folks :
1. Iran absolutely intends to develop a nuclear and even chemical weapons !
2. If and when this happens, they will NOT just sit on them !
3. Khamenei and Ahmadinejad are NOT boy scouts or samaritans, etc, etc, etc
4. They will then either supply WMD to people like alqaeda and pretend they are NOT involved or provoke israel and or the us and claim defensive retaliation !
5. If the free World does nothing now......then we can't complain when iran finally loses it and goes NUTS, for whatever reason with those weapons !
6. Surgical strikes will NOT stop them or even find ALL their labs and bunkers......so a full scale UN, NATO and US invasion and regime change might be the ONLY answer BEFORE they get to the NEXT stage !
Iran is not Iraq. These are proud people who are not cowed by US or anyone else' military power. Unlike Iraq, where Saddam's regime was unpopular, Iran's ordinary people are very anti-West and pro nuclear, including weapons. An occupation of Iran will not go well. In fact it is unbelievably stupid for you to even voice such as an option.
Is the world safer because North Korea and Pakistan have nuclear weapons? I don't think so. And while some may say its not fair that some countries already have nukes and others aren't allowed to obtain them, but they have not been used so far and letting any rogue country that wants a nuke have one is a formula for disaster.
If Iran wants to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes as they claim, then they should let UN weapons inspectors have free access to al their facilities, something they have not done. And why would they let their people suffer from sanctions if they had nothing to hide.
All those complaining about Iran support for Hezbollah might want to look in the mirror. Recent reports revealed that Israel has been arming/training/supporting terror groups against Iran. Unlike those groups Israel is supporting, Hezbollah is an elected political party.
Iran supports Hezbollah, and the US supports Israel.
"If Iran wants to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes as they claim, then they should let UN weapons inspectors have free access to al their facilities, something they have not done. "
They are not obliged to under the NPT, only declared nuclear facilities.
Iran, like any country, is a sovereign state and has sensitive military secrets. No country would allow inspectors to go wherever they want, least of all, without a guarantee that there is some incentive. The US has demanded Iran did everything it is told (even if not required to under the NPT) before any suggestion of lifting sanctions is mentioned.
If Iran were to do that, they would give up every bargaining chip they have. In fact, based on the US track record with Iraq, the US would probably maintain all the sanctions even if Iran complied with all of the Wests demands.
"And why would they let their people suffer from sanctions if they had nothing to hide."
Sorry, butbthat's as Cordesman described, a simplistic suggestion. It does not consider that Iran is a proud, sovereign and fiercely independent state, with legitimate security concerns of its own. A state does not have to have nukes to have legitimate military's secrets.
Why does Israel not sign the NPT? Does it have anything to hide?
Joseph; Nuclear weapons are not about other people's safety. They are about your own, just like any other weapon. The fact that no one has attacked either Pakistan or NKorea since they acquired nukes proves you absolutely wrong.
The intelligence show Iran is not having nor developing nukes, the only state in the middle east that have nukes, wage wars, occupy, annex support terrorists groups like JundAllah is Israel. In fact latest estimates are that Israel have 400 nuclear missiles. That is a threat to world peace and that is the initiator of the arms race. Israel only use Iran as a diverting object when Israel is condemned for annexation, killing of civilians on Freedom flottilla and to push focus away from the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Not to mention the big question, their peace rejectionism with palestinians.
World must unite against the israeli threat, 2003 Iraq was bombed for the same reason and it was Israel there too who pushed america to wage a completely useless war.
Iran has some of the largest natural gas reserves on Earth.
If all they wanted was electricity, they could have installed NG energy plants all over the country for less money and in less time than their nuclear program.
So, why nuclear?
Either they want more cash and clout because they have a bomb, like Pakistan and India, or they really do want to destroy Israel.
Either way, we should not for one second believe what they say. Iran is a police state. Iran is a deception.
And what exactly are we supposed to do to stop Iran, an early strike on a country who we have yet to be attacked by? One that could kill so many in such little time with one of our own nukes, or on their experimental reactor, which would only give them reason to attack with whatever they would have left, as well as give groups like Al Qaeda and the Taliban more legitimacy than the US forces that are still there. The only sane option would be to leave Southwest Asia entirely and let what happens happen.
It's propaganda. They want to stole resources from Iran ald it is all. The same was with Afganistan and other places...
"You seem to not get the point that Israel has never bombed any neighbor in history unless that neighbor FIRST attacked them."
That demonstrably false. Israel has a sordid record of violating ceasefires and starting wars eg the 1967 war. Israel fired the first shot.
"If all they wanted was electricity, they could have installed NG energy plants all over the country for less money and in less time than their nuclear program.
So, why nuclear?"
The same reason the Ford Administration gave to build Iran's first nuclear reactor – because it makes perfect sense for a country who's largest export is energy to conserve that resource for export. Go to most fishing villages or fruit growing districts in the US and you often find that it's not easy to buybthevlocal produce because it is all exported.
The real hypocrisy on America's part is that they were pushing the Shah to have a nuclear power program. In fact, the most vocal critics of Iran's nuclear power ambitions were the most vocal supporters of it – Cheney, Rumsfeld etc.
Nothing, as a buster community Israel has no right to answer back to any peaceful act of Islamic republics. Records say that all sort of heinous massacar in middle east been commited by terrorist Israel. DonT shout Israel.
Hello there, simply became aware of your weblog via Google, and located that it is really informative. I am going to watch out for brussels. I'll be grateful in case you continue this in future. Lots of folks might be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
A nuke armed Iran will sooner or later will be a reality. That is irrespective of the Fatwas of two Presidents which Amanpour talks about in either the 1st or 2nd part of this series. The reason would be because they will have no option but to go nuke in order to defend their stance; defending their right to nuclear energy – which is now an issue of national pride, and a non-negotiable one.
I personally do not think Iran would resort to any rash behavior – such as lobbing a couple of warheads into Tel Aviv just because their President woke up one day with a hangover, even if they were to possess nuclear power. The assurance for that comes from watching the behavior of crazier countries such as N. Korea and Pakistan.
No matter what happens, there are some interest groups who make tons of money when the tension goes up; the oil companies, the weapons dealers etc. Western politicians are their tools and are made to do as they wish.
The core destabilizing factor in the Middle East is Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. Western media conveniently and deliberately attempts to fog over the systematic genocide that is being committed by the Israelis against the Palestinians, while the Jewish dominated media diverts world attention elsewhere.
When the tension dies down, everyone will sit back and heave a big sigh of relief. No one will be too bothered that the insignificant Palestinians have ceased to exist while they were all holding their breath and looking at a scary drama being played out on the other side.
Genocide is a crime against humanity. It is being committed against the Palestinians right now.
Iran is not making a bomb, it's pursuing new and clean energy

Diverted or distracted from climate change fight
What a shocker! The annual emissions report by the un is out, And greenhouse gas emissions are still going up 30 years after we first realized there was a problem with the climate. the reality is, They have gone up 15 per cent during the last 10 years. So much for the promises of and deep cuts in emissions to avoid tragic heating.
government authorities have been making these promises since the early 1990s, And they are never kept because the political pressures are far stronger from those who profit in the present fossil fuel industries and the auto, Shipping and aviation groups than from those merely frightened for their childrens future.
The industries are well organized, Well heeled and tightly focused on stopping changes that threaten their how to tell if a chinese girl likes you business design. Private citizens are less sorted, Have far fewer sources, And have numerous competing demands on their attention. often, The industries succeed in sabotaging most tries to cut emissions.
For several years, The companies main strategy was denial. at first, They denied carbon dioxide and other garden greenhouse gas emissions were changing the climate. Never mind productivity: Just pay attention this other guy in a white coat who says it isn happening.
That worked as word spread, And the initial rapid response to the climate change threat lost speed through the later Flat denial became increasingly untenable in the early 21st century, around the other hand, And the emphasis of the deniers shifted to spreading doubt. The climate is actually changing; Lots of people don believe the warming is caused by human activities; The jury remains to be out.
Those lies worked take into account 15 years, But gradually the real scientists realized they had to organize, since well. Every major international body has accepted the evidence that climate change is happening and that we are the cause.
Time very good change of strategy by the fossil fuel industries and their allies, and. If they still cannot hope to discredit the science or confuse the public about the evidence, Maybe they can at least deflect and divert pressure for effective action on climate change on to targets that do not directly threaten sales of their products.
That where we are usually, And it was michael Mann, known professor of atmospheric science at Pennsylvania State University and director of the Earth System Science Center, Who first spotted the new organize of the fossil fuel industry shills.
Is an attempt being made by them to deflect attention away from finding policy solutions for our planets atmosphere towards promoting individual behaviour changes that affect people diets, Travel choices and other personal habits, He told The Observer newspaper this month. Is a deflection promote, And a lot of well meaning individuals been taken in by it. Gives the deflectors credibility is that they appear to be on the side of the angels. They not denying global warming is real; They just want you to apply your bike more, eat less meat and recycle your waste. What could be wrong with that?
none of them, effortlessly. you need to doing all those things: It essential for the solution. But they want you to achieve that instead of campaigning (or perhaps voting) for action that directly targets fossil fuel use. If you feel you already doing your bit in the climate emergency by changing your own behaviour, Then the stress is off them.
They also encourage the notion that it too late in the game to do anything useful about global warming. Leads people down a path of despair and hopelessness and in the end inaction, Which actually leads us to the same location as outright climate change denialism, shown Mann.
It really is quite late amongst people. We must cut global emissions by seven per cent a year (because increasing them by 1.5 percent annually) To avoid breaching the never exceed limit of 2C higher average global heat. That far beyond anything you have ever done before, So there is considerable approval for pessimism.
nevertheless, Pessimism is a luxury we cannot afford. we have to keep working away at the task, Because every cut we make in emissions, However inadequate, Gives us more time to deal with the rest of the problem.
typically deflect, repulse, Distract campaign is often hard to tell apart from genuine attempts to change people lifestyles in positive ways, And truthfully, There no part of trying. Just do what they promoting (motorbikes, various meat, taking, and also so on.) out on the internet to do the hard political and legal work of eliminating fossil fuel use, too.
