Why is Uganda attacking homosexuality?

April 18th, 2012
05:18 PM ET

Christiane Amanpour has an exclusive interview with the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni. She asks him about the controversies of the anti-homosexual legislation in his country and what his feelings are about gay people. Museveni maintains that before Uganda came in touch with Europeans, there were few homosexuals in that country. He also maintains, despite reports, that homosexuals have not been killed in Uganda.

I am also against it but we also have to put into consideration the fact that if that is what people want to be, so be it, its their life

The president apparently has not justified the creation of the law. On exhibitionism, why only punish the gays?

Uganda is based on Christianity so why allow dat and again western countries should try to respect Africans and their culture . and i don't think there is any African parent who can take dat from his son or daughter.

Why do u western journalists sink our African Presidents that low to discuss this kind of rubbish when our continent has far more serious matters to contend with? Ask them about corruption which is rampant and killing off the continent! Take that Rubbish back to where it began...

Charity Twinomugisha do you realize how contradictory your statement is

Ugandans need to sit back and let gay people be, most of us are just corrupt hypocrites that pull out the christian card whenever the G word is mentioned.

One thing people like to do is point out how evetnrhiyg is bad now, and how we really have to go back the good old days. Not do anything, but talk a lot.I'm too lazy/busy preparing for classes to look it up, but I read in Montaigne a few days ago how he thought the people of his age were so much worse than his grandfather's or father's generation. Montaigne wrote in the late 1500s. If I remember right, there was an ancient Greek philosopher who said much the same a couple thousand years back. It seems the present as a rule is universally a failure, and the past was always awesome (except when it was the present, because then it was hell on earth).
