French cartoonist defends Mohammed drawings

Cartoonist defends drawings of Mohammed

Free expression or provocation?

By Samuel Burke

Is shouting fire in a crowded theater free speech?

That debate has been sparked once again by a series of cartoons published in the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, some of which depict the Prophet Mohammed in obscene poses.

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour interviewed a cartoonist from the magazine, who is known as Luz. He said, “Everyone can have his own interpretation,” that the drawings were not made to shock people.

As for the violence that could come as a result of the cartoons, Luz said he would not accept any blame.

“Who is responsible for killing? It is the killer,” Luz said. “It’s quite unfair to say we are responsible for this. It’s fear that is responsible.”

Obama's 2009 Cairo speech: A look back

The French government has stationed police outside of the magazine's headquarters in Paris and ordered the immediate closure of the French embassy in Tunisia. It also plans to close French embassies and schools throughout the Arab world on Friday – the Muslim day of prayer.

Marwan Muhammed, spokesman for the Collective Against Islamophobia in France, calls for a respectful disagreement over what he deems an “awful piece of journalism.”

“Of course the freedom of expression has to be accepted and respected in our countries,” Muhammed told Amanpour, “but we cannot say that we hid behind the freedom of expression to use it as a means of insulting a whole community.”

French writer and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy disagrees. While he doesn’t like the cartoons, they are a part of a democracy, he said.

“The right to blasphemy is a core, key point of freedom,” he said.

Lévy also said he doesn’t believe the cartoons, clashes and ongoing protests are part of a cultural war between the rest and the Muslim world – citing western support of Libya to “free itself” as an example of the two groups working together.

“The real war is not between the West and ‘the rest.’ It is inside the rest– inside Islam,” Levy said.

“The real clash is between the moderates and the fanatics.”

Most Europe have laws that criminalize the denial of the holocaust, with sentences that reach 6 years in some countries. Examples of notable convictions of denying holocaust include:
1- France: Roger Garaudy (suspended sentence + F240,000 fine)
2- Germany: Ernst Zündel (5 years imprisonment)
3- Austria: Wolfgang Fröhlich (6 years imprisonment)
4- Switzerland: Jürgen Graf (15 months imprisonment)

so even Europe has red lines as well. Plus, when they know for sure that these cartoons hurt the feelings of millions of muslims, doesn't that categorize these insulting cartoons as a hate speech?

It is the insensitivity of such cartoons and depictions of a person/Prophet revered by the followers of Islam that is unacceptable!
We should all learn to respect each others faiths if we claim to be peaceful no matter what part of the world we come from.

Islam is of course peace ,now peace does not mean keeping quite on any kind of a situation where people provoke the sentiments of a community ,and to some of who have asked the muslims to evolve and grow i would suggest plse if any time in life you get a chance read the Quran ,you will no the truth of progress from where we have evolved, and if accepting any crap is evolving than we are more happy to remain unevolved ,lets not make comments without actually knowing the subject in depth ,a deep understanding is required as a muslim and to be prcise a peace loving muslim lets oppose the idea ,freedom has different parameters ,so freedom can be misused for which I have a lot of examples but on ehical grounds i would prefer being quite as freedom is not always good

If your god is ever so powerful. How could any mortal on Earth say or do anything to offend one’s God!
Most Muslims I spoke with say; Violence is “NOT” the way of their God. Their are some Muslims who have chose to excite violence through others, but using God as an excuse to do just that. Muslims have their own peaceable way in handling situations like this. They said; it is not the way on a true Muslim.

mohommad was robbing, raping, murderer according to the history books. (that would be the history books the muslims haven't edited.)
so what does it matter how mohommad is portrayed in cartoons, it will be better than what he did in real life.
and, if you are foolish enough to believe the muslims are peace seekers, forget that idea. otherwise why would a martyr be rewarded for killing infidels? infidels being anyone not a muslim.

according to books?? you're a moron and clearly have no idea who is prophet mohammed.

Prophet mohammed is a peace maker.
I recommend you to go and talk to a history professor in your community that is if you even have one!

and @thehasbeen I have been born and raised in Saudi. And I am mostly defiantly sure there is no word, sentence, or a context in Quran or any in Prophet mohammed's sayings that urge muslim to kill non-muslim.

For your information, one of prophet mohammed's neighbors was a jew and the other was Christian and he treated them with more respect and kindness than muslim just to show how a peace making Islam is.

Who is Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him?

He is the one who defended the rights of all humanity 1400 years ago.

He defended men's, women's and children rights

He commanded and fostered the love between relatives and neighbors

He established a coexistence relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims

He organized the relationship between the members of the family putting duties on sons and daughters towards the parents

He fought injustice, called for justice, love, unity and cooperation for the good.

He called for helping the needy, visiting the patients, love and exchanging advises between people.

He prohibited (by orders from God) bad manners such as stealing, lying, torturing and murdering.

He is the one who changed our lives and manners to be better.

      A Muslim doesn't steal

      A Muslim doesn't lie

      A Muslim doesn't drink alcohol.

      A Muslim doesn't commit adultery

      A Muslim doesn't cheat

A Muslim doesn't kill innocent people

A Muslim doesn't harm his neighbors

A Muslim obeys his parents and helps them

A Muslim is kind to young and elderly people, to women and to weak people.

A Muslim doesn't torture humans or even animals, and does not harm trees

A Muslim loves his wife and takes care of his children and show mercy towards them until the last day of his life.

A Muslim's relationship towards his children never stops even when they become adults

      He is Muhammad (PBUH)

Did you know why all Muslims love Muhammad (PBUH)?

Did you know what does Muhammad mean for Muslims?

Every Muslim loves Muhammad (peace be upon him) more than himself and more than everything in his life.

Before judging a Muslim be fair and:
قبل أن تحكم علي أي مسلم كن محايد:

1-Listen to this person, and watch his doings.

2-Compare his ideas and teachings with what is Islam and Prophet Mohammad PBUH ordered.

3-If you think that his thoughts are typical to that of Islam and Prophet Mohammad PBUH, and then compare them with his doings; is he applying these teachings?

4-If he is applying these teachings and sayings, so for sure represents Islam, if not then he calls himself a Muslim but doesn't represent Islam.

Hint: Prophet Mohammad is the best Muslim, no Muslim can be as perfect as he was, Muslims try their best to be the typical Muslim like Prophet Mohammad PBUH but sometimes they disobey God and Prophet Mohammad PBUH as they are normal humans who are subject to do wrong but the repent and get back to the right path.

You can know more about Prophet Mohammad PBUH on this website:

I don't know where Muslims die when when 9/11 or 26/11 takes place. I know many places on the face of the earth where Osama-minded people are being worshiped. Why? Which Muslim of the world questions it? Muslims do not give not give any freedom to any other religion in Arab world then why these viruses demand freedom from the people of the world. I do agree no peace-loving Muslim should ever be hurt but a terrorist one must be eliminated. There is no doubt in it that Quoran allows violence on the name of religion. So whats wrong if somebody criticizes that? Muslims must abandon their way and walk on the road of universal brotherhood though its unlikely but essential for survival.

You are totally wrong. The Quran denounces voilence. The Quran states: If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.

Islam and the Holy Quran also forbids to kill innocent children and women. Not a single place in Quran does it allow you to kill an innocent person. I urge you to read the Holy Quran for yourself because it's full of divine wisdom and the Holy Quran is the only book that has never been corrupted. Peace!

The cartoons or anything else that get muslims riled up about is 'free speech' and protected by law. The muslims are taught to kill non-muslims! Islam does not teach tolerance, love, and caring as many religions. By Muslims outrageous reactions to anything to do with their Islamic religion, they are trying to scare people into not having 'free speech' or actions. Their intentions are to scare individuals that they will be in danger for their is pure nazism!

The individuals or groups that think they can break the law by killing, threatening or destroying property b/c of some perceived insult to Mohammed are common criminals and need to be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the applicable laws.

Quoted below is a description of the Gayssot Act, which highlights the hypocrisy of the French when it comes to free speech.

"In France, the Gayssot Act, voted for on July 13, 1990, makes it illegal to question the existence of crimes that fall in the category of crimes against humanity as defined in the London Charter of 1945, on the basis of which Nazi leaders were convicted by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg in 1945-46. When the act was challenged by Robert Faurisson, the Human Rights Committee upheld it as a necessary means to counter possible antisemitism.[23]"

And so it seems that if an issue is sensitive for the people of Europe, France is willing to pass laws criminalizing free speech and expression on that topic. If the issue is sensitive to others, though, the French are happy to lecture about the importance of dissent in a democracy. They, apparently, still have an imperialist, racist mindset.

doesnt freedom include freedon to love, as well as to hate. When there is a choice, there is freedom. Choosing freedom to speak the truth witout love, is as good as speaking truth in hate and harvesting the same in responces from those the message is directed. The intolerant are to be blamed for the resulting mob rule, and the messanger is also to be blamed for the seeds of hate sown. So must the messanger be silent; or should he speak with wisdom to bring forth a "convincing" message that the masses will listen to?

When the Muslim world produces deeply offensive and anti-semitic movies that are shown on TV during Ramadan (for example the Protocols of the Elders of Zion), the Israeli government protests officially and the Israelis do not go on burning the embassies of the Moslem countries that display these movies and the Jews all over the world do not go and protest and act violently. What hypocricy.
What about the freedom to deny the holocaust
The freedom to wear the niqab.
    The freedom to build minarets
The freedom of HT to express their views
The freedom to live with dignity

If there are no international laws that prevent religious vilification and google/ youtube refuse to follow their published code of conduct for dealing with these matters, then we are really powerless to engage and prevent this type of provocation on an intellectual, legal or political level. This will only empower people who perceive that the laws are unfair and specifically descriminate Muslims to take the law into their own hands. Although all of the Sheikhs in Sydney have denounced violent protests, they still do not have control of people who are enraged and prefer to resort to physical rather than intellectual means to obtain their rights in defence of their faith. The white supremist will take this opportunity to flame the issue further leading to a viscious cycle of violence. We should learn from history because we are repeating the same mistakes that led to holocaust, genocide in bosnia, rawanda, norway and other atrocities.

To deny the Holocaust one will go to jail for six years in Europe, because such denial affects the feelings and sensibilities of Jews, but to do or say something against Islam and also against the feelings and sensibilities of Muslims is most welcome in Europe. Fine, it is time the Muslim World re-assess its relationship with the West.

There are BILLIONS of people in the world, with BILLIONS of opinions.

If any one of us wants to be insulted, all we have to do is look hard enough....

The Muslims insult the Jews, the Jews insult the Muslims, the Muslims burn down Christian Churches, the Christians aren't happy & make a film, the Muslims riot & kill the agnostics/athiests point out the lack of "Peace" in the "Religion of Peace" and make cartoons, the Muslims riot more and probably more die.........

You get the idea. Pretty stupid when you think about it........

There have been hundreds of satirical cartoons of Bin Laden sadomizing Jesus and or the Pope, how about riots of Christians burning Muslims and starting a crusade because of this, never you will never see it, why we have a choice and respect freedoms of expression ? Continue to burn and destroy all you do is move closer to the other side of the evolutionary scale and accomplish nothing but the opposite of what you so desperately seek ! Remember respect and human dignity = peace !

Muslims have a code of conduct in the Quran that prevents them from making fun of another religion. The obvious reason is that some people may unknowingly make fun of our religion in return. You would think that our society is advanced enough to have similar laws and codes of conduct the protect people from hearing offensive remarks aiming at something they love dear, more than they love themselves? I have never heard a Muslim make fun of Jesus, Buddah, Hindu Gods, Jewish faith etc. Not one Muslim out of 1.6 billion people has ever stooped to that low level.

Ozmir you do not have to work hard to find satirical cartoons or drawings of Jesus, and other religions, look at markets in Egypt, Morroco, Tunisia. The issue is understanding and consideration of the source, you can´t judge an entire population for the actions of a few, thus why protesting with violence and anger does not help you and the rest of the Muslim community the terrorism and hatred you breed will only hurt that respect and understanding you desire, you will never get it with the wrong actions, rise above it and ignore it, and it will go away use the power of indifference, fight it with fire and the fire will consume you eventually, hatred leads you nowhere.

I don't see how I can insult the very core of who you are and what defines you ...and then claim its freedom of speech..
It's just like how I can beat the hell of who you are and claim its freedom of action!
Our Prophet (pbuh) has long been insulted provoked and harrassed in many ways and he never took revenge for himself but only stood up for righteousness and justice...and so we are not protesting for what has been said or what has been expressed but protesting against the disrespect and the brutality at which we are treated...and how lightly our most sacred and most precious beliefs are taken..

One cannot expect that after mocking at a particular community, you will be immediately forgiven. Respect and dignity are mutual in any bilateral relationship.

Like most, if not all, civil codes the world over, neither that of the US, nor that of France define vilification of religions a civil right. It isn't free speech any more than slander. Why aren't charges brought against the imbeciles who caused the violent outrage in muslim countries?

Polls show that people tend to agree on one thing: freedom is a sacred value and everybody's freedom of speech should be respected. But respect is another core value of society. Ethics of journalism should prevent cartoons of that kind
