Did the Israeli military defy PM Netanyahu?

A sensational story is rocking Israel this week – alleging that the Israeli military defied orders from its commander in chief, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Leading Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan is reporting that Netanyahu ordered his military to prepare for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities nearly two years ago. Dayan's story documents that both the army chief and the head of Mossad (Israeli intelligence) refused to comply with Netanyahu’s order.
In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Thursday, Dayan said the information came from officials who were in the room with Netanyahu when the conversations took place, during a meeting of Israeli ministers.
“It happened in the course of 2010 and all of a sudden, just when they are at the door, the chief of staff [of the Israel Defense Forces], then Gabi Ashkenazi, and the head of Mossad, Meir Dagan, are given an order by the Prime Minister Netanyahu to step into a pre-attack alert and be ready to strike in Iran.”
Dayan told Amanpour that she believes this is the closest Israel has ever come to striking Iran, but the dramatic rift between the military and political establishments stopped it.
“You have on the one side Prime Minister Netanyahu with a deep conviction…. And on the other hand, you have the chief of staff and the head of Mossad who very courageously set off the alarms and say, ‘Guys, this is not the right thing to do now. And if we step into this pre-attack alert, this is noisy; this can lock us into war.’”
Also speaking with Amanpour on Thursday, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon, would neither confirm nor deny some parts of Dayan’s report.
While Ayalon implied there was not an order from Prime Minister Netanyahu, he did allude to disagreements between Netanyahu and the military.
“Israel is a democracy. And although we have very opinionated high brass…we're very proud that they can very freely actually give their opinions,” Ayalon said. “But at the end of the day, it's the commander in chief… to make the decisions. But the very fact that nothing happened means that the commander in chief in Israel did not give the order.”
What the world is telling Obama now
Israel’s tone on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program appears to have very quickly changed since President Obama’s reelection on Tuesday.
The Deputy Foreign Minister gave what could only be described as a ringing endorsement of the Obama administration’s handling of Iran.
Ayalon told Amanpour that despite past differences with the Obama administration over Iran, “I think today we can safely say that we are very much on the same page and will continue to follow the lead of the U.S.”
But Israel has not always said it would follow Obama’s lead. Israeli journalist Dayan says Ayalon’s comments to Amanpour are in stark contrast to what Netanyahu had told her just days before Obama’s reelection.
“[Netanyahu] very, very strongly said if the United States doesn’t do it, we’ll have to do it ourselves.”
Dayan now believes Israel has postponed a deadline on Iran until the spring of 2013.
The Iranian Ambassador to the U.N., Mohammad Khazaee, responded to the report Dayan’s program in a letter to the Security Council, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its strong protest and condemnation of such a provocative, unwarranted and irresponsible statement by the Israeli regime's prime minister. I wish to reiterate that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never had any intention of any attack on any other nation."

The coverage of Ilana Dayan program had proven to be exaggerate and brought out of context. Netanyahu ordered the Army chief to prepare the IDF ready to attack in order to signal to the Iranians to halt their nuke program. The Army did so and the Iranians did some casual gesture, Israel's Mossad did some "unknown" action, Israel and the US took care of some Iranian computers and the story is rolling back and forth. The bottom line is that Israel will do the job if the US will fail to meet the challenge. Obama is quite a week president and that leads me to the only conclusion, that Israel will attack the Iranian nuke sites during 2013.

The issue is not just about Israel. The bigger issue is a triggering of a nuclear arms race. Saudi Arabia has already told President Obama that if Iran gets the bomb, they will get the bomb also. Coupled with Irans statements that Israel should be wiped off the map, a massive arms race is what they are headed toward. This whole situation could deteriorate into the next world war. Despite the interests the U.S. has to protect its oil routes, a nuclear arms race in the middle east is the last thing anyone on this planet needs.

I'm not pro Israeli or anti-Israeli, however the Arab coalitions of both wars was sent packing with their tails between the cracks of their a s ses. I think Israel has proven that if provoked or in both of those cases attacked outright they will defend themselves, let alone win. The armor clashes of the war alone shows how heavily dependent the Arabs were on Soviet military doctrine, and why not; after all they had spent a great deal of wealth on Soviet hardware and technical training. Not very wise to funnel all of your armor columns into a choke point to be picked off by the Israeli Air force as well as the displacement tactics of the IDF armor forces. The Arabs had a overwhelming force on paper, yet lacked the technical training and wisdom to use their forces effectively. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it up to you to learn more. Israel is busy developing oil and gas deposits off it's coast in the Levant Basin. When they have revenue coming in fro sales of oil and gas, they are predicted to make them a net energy exporter, do not be surprised to see Israel cooperating publicly with China on arms development and manufacture. Israel is the second largest foreign supplier of arms to the Chinese armed forces. They have in the past co-developed weapons and sensors but have done so very quietly so as not to stir public opposition in the US. The Israelis take technology transferred to them from the US, repackage it and sell this to China as a way to more or less bribe the Chinese not to sell their arms to Israels enemies in the Middle East. Your gas prices would be over $10/gallon. Of course, since Israel has the 2nd most companies listed on the Nasdaq, if it were to go away, your economy would be hurt quite a bit by that too. Also, since defense companies get money from Israel and US tax dollars to supply weapons to Israel (yes, Israel does have a military budget of their own too, and not just the US help), these companies would lose revenue and have to layoff quite a bit.
You'd also have to deal with a large influx of immigration from the Middle East and a lot of Jews from Israel too...that would flood your country with more people looking for work/refuge during an economic crisis.
