A country where "insane" is the best hope

The “elite tend to not see what they don’t want to see,” Italian journalist Lucia Annunziata told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday.
She was reacting to the deadlocked political landscape that Italy faces as results from its latest election were announced on Tuesday.
Italian parties never win outright majorities, Annunziata said, so as in most parliamentary systems must enter into a coalition.
What is astounding is just how great the impasse is that Italy seems to face.
The top three parties, those of center-left Luigi Bersani, center-right (and phoenix from the ashes) Silvio Berlusconi, and anti-establishment former comedian Beppe Grillo, are all within four percentage points of each other. And their political platforms differ greatly.
“Europe is really, really looking at us and shaking,” Annunziata said.
The only real options for a coalition, she said, lie in an alliance between Berlusconi and Bersani, or a three-way alliance that includes Grillo.
Annunziata called that second option “insane” given the gulf between Berlusconi and Grillo’s politics.
Unless one of these unlikely coalitions is formed, Annunziata said there is “no question” that an new election will need to be held.

Actually it appears that the third option – Bersani/PD government with "external support" from Bersani/M5S is far more likely. M5S's programs have much closer affinities with the left than the right. If you look at the breakdown of the 16 million voters who deserted the two main parties, Berlusconi (who lost half of his voters compared to 2008) lost most votes to Monti and abstention, while Bersani (who lost a third of his 2008 electors) lost most to Grillo. There is already a working model for this type of PD/M5S cooperation in the Sicily Regional Government
Annunziata's vision is not correct.
Bersani + Grillo can form an alliance at least on some important programs.
Why do some people want Berlusconi in the picture at any cost?
Why do they want new elections at any cost – this is just what Italy does not need now
Other times Italy had to manage complicated alliances to move forward – but those were the cases when the government was most effective ....
