Iranians go to the polls to elect a new president on June 14, but who are the candidates? What are the stakes? And why was a leading contender disqualified?
Christiane Amanpour explains in the video above.

This is the statement by Guardian Council spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodai made against the 78 year old Rafsanjani "An individual, who seeks to hold a senior administrative post but is only capable of doing work for several hours during the day, cannot be approved [to stand in the election]"
Could you potentially have mentioned this in your report, his age to start off and that it might just be a legitimate reason for disqualification? There were of course another 686 registrations that were also disqualified.
Perhaps we can compare it with the US elections? How many candidates were there? Two? No of course not, but then not all candidates were actually given an opportunity to join the stage with Obama and Ronmey, were they? Is that very democratic? Did Iranian news sources make a mockery of the US elections because of the incredible amount of dollars spent by each individual in order to get elected?
Goodness, I've lost my faith is democracy almost entirely because of the USA, I don't think you should be pointing fingers.
That's the sort of specious and deceptive logic that seems to be the hallmark of totalitarian states. The difference between Obama and Romney and the presidential candidates in Iran is that the former were chosen by the people voting in primary elections while the latter were secretly chosen by an old man/religious dictator who holds all the power in Iran and will continue to hold all the power after the election, though not a single Iranian citizen ever voted for him.
How much did Romney and Obama spend to get elected in their respective primary elections?
You claim a old man/religious dictator runs Iran, perhaps. We know however corporations run and promote candidates in the US elections.
Why did news corporations like CNN not cover ANY of the other candidates? Why were there only debates between Romney and Obama and none of the other candidates?
The US democratic system is akin to price fixing among corporations. In essence you're still buying from the same company.
