The American columnist who can't live in America

June 10th, 2013
05:23 PM ET

By Richa Naik, CNN

Blogger and columnist Glenn Greenwald may have broken the biggest American story of the year, but the American can’t even live in America.

Greenwald, a gay man, moved to Brazil so he could be with his spouse since the U.S. government does not recognize same-sex couples when applying for residency visas. Greenwald said that this experience has allowed him to cast a critical eye on the subjects he reports on.

“When you grow up with any kind of real challenge that forces you to evaluate your relationship to these conventions and the things that you’re taught…you start to question what that system is.” Greenwald said. “Is it really valid in the way that it’s rejecting me or is it the system itself that is corrupted? I think that lends itself to a much more critical eye that you end up casting upon things that you’re taught are indisputably true.”

In the video above you can watch Christiane Amanpour's interview with Greenwald.

Why should he sacrifice his relationship in order to live in the U.S.?

This is a discussion of semantics. Maybe he can, but living the US is a terrible option, given his personal situation. The focus should be on whether existing laws are just, not on the semantics of the article.

Justine: are you married, living in the US? Imagine that the US government decided that your spouse could not stay legally in the US. You'd constantly be in fear of the USCIS coming to take your spouse away. You could not make any plans for the future because the future is so uncertain. In this situation; according to your finely honed thinking, If you decided to maintain your relationship with your spouse; and left the US to be with them, your decision to leave the US to be with them is a CHOICE. Really? Putting yourself in Mr Greenwald's place is it a choice to leave a place that intentionally attempts to bear you apart? Think about it.

Justine you proved how out of touch with things you are because it is obvious that you never truly been in love because if you have been you know that it is not his choice to live outside the country of his birth the country is forcing him out he is one of many hundreds of thousands that are being forced to choose between the one they love and country. So all I can say to you Justine is I hope you are never in the situation that you are forced to choose.

Justine I hope you think about whether straight binational married couples even have to think/deal with the choice that binational gay and lesbian couples deal with. The issue is not whether Glenn can live in the US or not OR the choice he made to move to Brazil. Its more to do with WHY did he have to make such a choice? Why couldn't the love of his life marry and move to the US with him whereas similar straight couples who are married are allowed the freedom to do so (sponsor their husbands, wives from other countries) on a daily basis.

I'm a gay man ad this article deeply offends me. He is CHOOSING to live there, not being forced to live there. He also just admited that he has no objectivity because of his beef with DOMA.

Get a clue you guys. Choosing to live without your spouse is not a choice. It's like you're saying I have a choice to move to Somalia. Theoretically yes, but I would have no quality of life.

Thats true, but don't write an article with a headline that implies that he was kicked out of the country. His living situation is NOT the result of his story about the NSA. DOMA is a stupid law that is probably going to be shot down by the supreme court. There is no need to make FALSE STATEMENTS about things to show how ignorant this law is.

Maybe it would be insulting to him and his partner to live in a country that does not recognise their union. I don't blame him, also Brazil would be much more fun, just my opinion of course,
