Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil tells CNN's Christiane Amanpour about the aggressive rhetoric whirling around water problems between Egypt and Ethiopia.
You fools talk, we will build the dam!!
As a Sudanese and as an African I am so sorry for the western media to pick color than humanity. Where is the talk about Sundanese and Ethiopian side of the story. Ethiopian we are with u. Color victims will be out of the game. Western media nonsense. EGYPT IS NOT AFRICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I comment here by writting that Ethiopians must not destroy Egtptians becouse they are very much used to this water or they Ethiopians should built dums that can overflow and such will non affect Egpt. The Kenyan conflict with Ethiopoia on lake Turkana is another menese.
You western medias are always biased against black Africans. You better stop that. And My short statement for the Egyptian brothers is "Local medias who told you Ethiopia is constructing a dam to get Egypt hurt is a completely lie" It has a massive advantages for Egypt and Sudan as studies indicated.
Mulugerta G, what are these advantages that U said Egypt and Sudan will take from the dam construction ??
As I know the studies refered that there was a lack of transparency from Ethiopian side
I'm not sure whether you know the slightest of details about the dam project, or you are sticking the other side of the story, Mr.Francis. The dam will only be used for power generation, and the water will keep on flowing. There is no way Ethiopia will recycle the water once it hits the turbines. What difference does it make to Egypt whether or not the water gets there after generating power, or straight from Lake Tana? Unless it is a blunt statement to oppose development plans of a poor African nation, it doesn't make sense for you to make this statement. Another lame and pathetic perspective, why would Ethiopia build dams on rivers flowing to other nations if not on Nile? Be fair, buddy. Ethiopians are concerned about Egypt way better than you do, and would never pick a stick against our historic brothers.
the difference is that for electricity to be generated there must be a lake for the dam , like lake nasser due to aswan dam , so to completly fill this lake you will affect our water share for 5 years , then water will just pass through turbines
Trust me . Im an engineer .
1) first I am sure that Our PM know much about this dam what many people don`t know about this MAN is that he was the irrigation and water resources at 2011 to 2012 at that days the dam was in big progress in that days and it was a very big issue in his minstery as well he is an engineer.
2) your words about that is a blunt statement to oppose development plans of a poor African nation, we Egyptians minestery and people not at all oppose any projects or plans in africa and WHY would we oppose it ??!!!!!!!! what you talking about is the life line for egyptians actually for 90 million people!!! and what you really don`t know that egypt has only one resource for water that is the nile...... let`s replace positions if u were me what were you going to do?? it is very dangerous case to egyptians it is about life ......... or die of thirst
3) when you talk in this way about the dam i conclude that you don`t know much about dams or about the geography of the nile . the nile passes across mountains in ethiopia which has excellent clay which in turn come to egypt when you build a dam i amnot talking about water now you will prevent this clay from reaching egypt .
dams to generate elecricity water must pass through turines which have very narrow paths to generate a high velocity and produce power that is why there is lakes beside dams , like lake nasser due to aswan dam , so logically how can any dam whatever it is passes this huge amount of water which passes across 9 counteries ??!!!!! there must be decrease in water no way i am here not talking about recycling water or this things i am talking about prventing water to reach us do you know what i mean prventing our source of life .............
Sure the amount of water stored in the Aswan Dam and wasted in Nile Delta will reduce slightly until our dam become full eventually. If Egypt has the right to store and use it what is wrong if Ethiopia (the source) store it and let it flow evenly? Later Egypt will keep on receiving the same amount of water until further negotiation (unlikely) or action by riparian nations...Sooner or later Egypt will be forced to give up some from its monstrous share of the Nile. Christiana you should be doing a better job than talking like an ill informed Egyptian. Even the PM is more reasonable than you.
No one says no water is going to get lost in the process. As much as Egyptians want to use the water, the Africans are going to use it. The reality is, some water is going to get lost via evaporations in the process and that is unavoidable. Egypt can help itself by improving the wasteful irrigation technique it uses to cope with this reality.
One thing has to be clear for everyone. Egyptians cannot prevent Africans from using water right in their own land so as the Egyptians can use it down the stream. That is illogical, inhuman and wrong. ETHIOPIA CANNOT GO HUNGRY FOR EGYPT TO EAT.
Egypt has to accept the reality that the amount of water that is going to reach its border is going to decrease as the remaining Africa develops capacity to use its natural resource right on its land.
EGYPT IS NOT AFRICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Amanpour for inviting the Egyptian PM on your program. Egypt's stand on the new Ethiopian dam is totally unacceptable. Recently, many of the Egyptian politicians are telling Ethiopia and the whole region (the Nile basin countries) that Egypt won't tolerate a loss of a single cup of/ a drop of water when actually Egypt looses billions of cubic meters of water every year to evaporation from its Aswan High dam.
If no one has a right to use a cup of Nile water, which means simply the whole region belongs only to Egypt; but to no one else. This is a big lie! The Egyptians need to stop telling us such lies. Let me remind the Egyptian PM that we are not building the new dam in Cairo or Alexandria; rather we are doing it in our sovereign territory. Hence, simply stop telling us such baseless lies.
Let the Egyptian people know that you guys are diverting your peoples’ attention from the current domestic affairs (political & economic challenges that whole Egypt is facing under the current administration). The Egyptian people have been stolen off their revolution by the current Islamist government, now the same guys are trying to steal Ethiopian dream. We will stand firm on your way & stop you. We did it to the Italians when they tried to colonize us; make no mistake that we are at the brink of repeating history. Leave the dam for us (Ethiopia) & focus on the real challenges Cairo is facing these days under your leadership.
Western-darling Egypt proved to be a cause of regional tension, while Khartoum stood firm on the side of reason and peace regarding the Nile waters issue.
A flood of reports evidencing Egyptian belligerency have surfaced in the past two weeks.
However, American and European media appear to have chosen to under-report the scale of the Egyptian irrationality and chauvinism.
Most of them have been engaged in a subtle campaign to present Egypt’s belligerency as one prompted by water scarcity.
Western media was observed under reporting the accidentally televised plot of Egypt’s politicians to destabilize Ethiopia by hiding from their readers the fact that it was implicitly condoned by the Egyptian head of the state.
Similar approach was followed on Monday when President Morsi made the most irresponsible statement a head of state could make in a televised speech addressing a conference of Islamist parties’ supporters.
In quite contrast, the government of Sudan – about whom the western media would rather not report anything positive – proved its perseverance to reason and science in the face of Egyptian bully.
The racism against black africans by western media including CNN is recorded and history will never forgive or forget these bigoted view. Good luck with your unbalanced report and racism against Ethiopia.
Egypt is not the driest country in the world. How come someone was a so called an irrigation minister of Egypt be that ignorant? check NASA Sir or ask someone to Google it for you. And by the way the Egypt 's Sahara is mentioned as some of driest place not the whole country. This minister is a typical BM idiots, he knew about Dam if he was working as irrigation minister. The fact is, now he needs to save a cup of water rather than not to waste a cup of water. your country soon will be the world's driest country if you stay in your position man.

Wow did any one call this journalism? It's all propaganda for Egypt Muslim Brotherhood.Christiane amanpour gave him all that minutes with out any challenge or other side point of view. Corrupted journalist always do this to get press access for them self... You will see she will get access to talk to morsi on next few months. Who call CNN new any more shame
really the shame that u are egyptian and don`t care about the dangers that faces your country and all what you care about is MORSI you even don`t wanna to help us in our case simply .............. you are a traitor........... 😛
guys let us be resonable you know we are the source of nile(85%) and also the poorest country in the world i.e. famen is stell at large killing millions. if we don't use nile we will not get out of poverty. we didn't even say we will use the rive for irrigation it is just for hydropower only which will be genereted by the water flow. did u watch an interview same years ago which is made by some egyptian journalist and pm melese he said we know egypt need the water very much than us so he said we will use it for hydropower only.and the u know the colonial era is gonne bro this is the only choice u have new agreement.war will not be the anwser we will be still the source of nile. and if u know your history u tryed once but u failled.
Ethiopia has every right to build the dam. Egypt is only thinking of its' own benefit. If Egypt can built it's own dam, Ethiopia has all the rights to build its' own dam. No if and but. Ethiopia build your dam, don't let Egypt dictate you.
Where is the balance and presenting the other side's case, CNN? Or at least do your homework and challenge him on his facts, Christian? You know your audience is not that much informed about that part of the world. No wonder you guys lost credibility as respected news organization both in and outside of the U.S. longtime ago.
Egypt government can fret and fume all it wants to distract its people from domestic problems, but an international panel of eight experts (including two Egyptian engineers), have already submitted report saying the hydroelectric dam (not for crop irrigation) will have zero impact on Sudan and Egypt.
Egypt's electric power starved industry should be eagerly anticipating the abundant cheap electricity that will be available for transmission from Grand Renaissance Dam, much like all Ethiopia's neighbors (Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti) who have already signed historic contracts.
Thank you for this comment.
I agree with Miki the story should be both sided and the program should have an Ethiopian representative to have their say
We are now living in the 21st century where the old thinking and thoughts become totally outdated. We have been telling the Egyptians starting from the scratch that we will follow the win win approach for all parties in the region. If Morsi as always does not wake up for truth and reason its his problem. We are now marching in the avenue of renaissance and bitterly determined for development. So any one who dares to stand on our way will suffer the bitterly determined power of the great East African reinsurance march. Today we have no worries for fighter jet, arming gorillas or being distabilized by foreign elements rather we are worrying to boost the legitimate rights of being freed from the the very humiliating situation of sleeping in the vast resources and having nothing to feed their people of our Bros in East Africa and across the continent. If our brothers in Egypt put themselves in the side of reason we all have a very bright future coming but if they choose the opposite that will be their destiny. No power can hold Ethiopia from liberating itself from the humiliating past of being synonymous with hunger and being the first power house and # 1 exporter of power for the new Africa..
Egypt, if you think you can bully other African countries that also need the waters of the Nile, it is dangerously unwise. That mentality can only create more problems for an already very troubled and unstable country called Egypt. And please don't even dare try the military option because you are going to be humiliated very very badly in the long run!
unbalanced and poor journalism ... you fool west journos by supporting countries like Egypt , you are incubating the next million , osama biladen's, ayman alzewari’s, ... watch out you fools!
Brother people of Egypt should not worry about the ongoing Grand Ethiopian project since the project will yield win win scenario and if we think positively even it will benefit not only Egypt but also the regions as well. But Muslim Brotherhood's leaders should not try to get cheap political advantage over Nile.Resolve your internal political mess first and deliver the wishes and aspiration your demanding nation.
Shame on you Amanpour... poor reporting and questioning.... you don't you ask about their bulling behavior and hostility for people who have feed them over the centuries letting their review to go untouched....Blue Nile/ Abay is Ethiopia's and other three countries river, inlcuding Egypt and Sudan, the sole ownership of the river by Egypt/ Sudan is over... it will be a dream to have veto and sol ownership when the river originate from the highlands of Ethiopia. Sudan has come to its senses and have agreed on principle for sharing. Egypt shall use its water efficiently and look for ground water sources like Libya did..... Africa will thrive.
I believe that Ethiopia should use its other sources of water (as it does have a lot of water resources other than Nile) before rushing to use the Nile for the sake of living in harmony with its neighbors. I believe that the late PM of Ethiopia started this contentious project just for the sake of showing how influencial he is regionally/globally rather than for the longterm benefit of Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Therefore, I believe Ethiopia must pend the construction of this dam and discuss the matter with the lower riparian countries before the unintedned consequences follow. I know some of my fellow Ethiopians may not agree with my opinion, (though I also know there are many Ethiopians who are not emotional and believe in peaceful co-existence with theri neighbors agree with me) but this is unfortunately the bitter truth of the situation our late PM put us in and we have to resolve the puzzle to continue as a country.
You do not represent Ethiopia or its government, we have to call you out as an internal Traitor or external coward 'Bandas', such as some Eritreans and Somalis, who live on re-emittances from their citizens in western countries, who are failed states who sponsor terrorism and always wish bad thing to happen to Ethiopia, instead Ethiopia shall prosper. Its the promise land. Go Ethiopia Go, build the dam!!!
Poor journalism on chrstian amanpours part, any amateur journalist would have challenged this selfish guy just based on facts.
I think you are not an Ethiopian You do not represent us ! we don't have time to hear " Bandas" no one can stop us we build our Dam!!!!
you must be an Eritrean!! shame on uuuuu
The Nile actually originates further up in the central African highlands, in the evergreen jungles and Forests of the dark continent.
who ever shouts we will Never, Never, Never, allow any second holdup our construction EGRD. As abyot said it any one can shout but we will continue our job until any one start throwing a single pebble to our territory.
I don't think Egypt will turn us its Enemies by water war on Ethiopia. I know many Egyptian news papers and unwise politicians lie their people with baseless propaganda. Nile is the natural gift of all the respective African countries. Any war based on Nile will never been acceptable by we African's and it is a war between Egypt and other African Countries. I am sure also it will never have support from International communities. Rather the war not Dam may affect Egyptians more. The tendency of undermining Ethiopians will result more losses. Respect and mutual benefit from Nile should be their.
Now Morsi is trying to be tactical.the path he choose will not take him any further.instead of all this he would rather to calmdown his country, nile is calmdowning in his motherland.
The Previous agreement over the Nile was made between the African countries Colonial powers at that time without adding the owner of the major water share(Ethiopia)because the country wasn't colonized and that made the agreement invalid.i wish your view should also added from the part for the lower stream countries to show that if any of the countries are going to be effected with this project .now your programme becoming unbalanced and only shows the Egyptians point of view & bias understanding and it a makes me feel like i'm seeing the Egyptian Television.the government of Egypt is still trying to change the view of his people vision to the dispute over the nile dam in time working inside on political stability of the country.and the Government of Ethiopia is still on notifying to the Press that the Dam will not affect Egypt which also been also supported by the experts that are from the countries Egypt,Sudan and Ethiopia.me and many of your viewers will be glad if you go to Ethiopia and check out yourself whether this dam will affect the Egyptian people or not.i'm sure the Government of Ethiopia support your request on this.for the sake of true Journalism.
I'm so dissapointed in Amanpour's reports lately, I really believed she was a true investigativbe journalist who asked the tough questions, but now I'm afraid she's a puppet for the media cash cows. I totally agree with the comment above – she will now get access to have Morsy on the show because she displayed the Egyptian PM in a good light. That's what this interview was really about – showing the muslim brotherhood that CNN can be their propoganda tool as well. 🙁
it seems like Muslim brotherhood coming back to mubareks position regarding Israel – Palestinian conflict, the western media position shows exactly like that. because at the beginning US officials were in favor of Ethiopian Renaissance dam but now things seem the opposite
CNN Discards All Journalistic Standards ! Christiane Amanpour, with this interview shows how much is Corruption, scandal, and fandom in journalism. It is shameful for longtime jornalist to make such kind of mistakes. It show how much she is corrupted !!!
shame on you Amanpour !!!
1- Egypt was invited to the negotiation table ten years ago by the upstream countries, but it refused.
2- Egypt has been consistently urged, in fact begged by the upstream countries to join them and negotiate its rights on the river, but it rejected the invitation
3- Egypt was invited by Ethiopia a couple of years ago to join it in the dam project, but Egypt rejected the invitation.
4- Egypt asked experts to study the Ethiopian dam. The experts, including two from Egypt conducted a study for several years and notified Egypt that the dam will not harm Egypt. Again, Egypt rejected the experts’ study.
Africans should no more babysit Egypt. Nile belongs to Africa and every country has a right to their share of the water.
Christiane Amanpour – Shame on you for not showing any interest of prsenting Ethiopia's interest. What a one side story. I hope you are not thirsty to see war and be able to report it. Egypt does not own Nile river. It is african's river and 85% of it come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has all right to use it for electric as well as irrigation. It is not Ethiopia's responsiblity for Egypt's govenment failure of not finding another alternative of energy. They have been using the river for so long and they should have been thankful and be cooperative. Ethiopia will build the dam!
If Egpyt is looking for war they know what they will get!
No, the Egyptians don't want war. Egypt is currently being run by a terrorist organization called the Muslim brotherhood. Ethiopians need to understand that these bullies running Egypt are not just criminals but they are idiots who want to destroy Egypt and its relation with other countries and they love war. However, the Egyptian population (at least those that are not poor and uneducated) hate the governing Muslim brotherhood and in fact are going to protest in hopes to kick them out of power. Ethiopia needs to understand that the views of the mafia, the Muslim brotherhood, does not represent the majority of the Egyptian people and at least I (an Egyptian citizen) apologize for the televised disaster that was aired!
With regards to the dam: I personally don't know all the research done in this area nor am I an engineer. However, I highly doubt this will NOT affect Egypt like some people here are stating. And please let's not just kick Egypt out of the decision making process after all the Nile does affect the Egyptians very much and it is a huge concern.
There needs to be better involvement so all parties are in agreement.
I also agree with everyone that posted how Amanpour purposely gave a biased view to make the Muslim brotherhood (the ruling party in Egypt) appear in the best light. I do not believe this has anything to do with skin color but rather that CNN is backing the corrupt Obama administration views on foreign affairs and supports backing up terrorist organizations in the Middle East.
Egypt, you want conflict with us??? We don’t want. But if u wants go head you will see the consequence. You have to know we have the right to build the Dam. We Never, Never …….stop to build !!!!!!!!
proud on Ethiopians reasoning. we have to tell them the reality why we are poor and how they are miss informed
Wow what a journalist she is,get yr book or google some facts before u open yr mouth.I believe what Ethiopians needs to do specially the people who live in Atlanta CNN main head quarter they need to demand someone from Ethio gob needs to put ethio story.
Second were is DC ethiopians they need to protest the u.s needs to support our country.
@ Egyptian Citizen. I think u are opposing any construction on Nile. This is impossible. You said Nile is life line of Egypt. The same holds true for us.It is the matter of living in poverty or get out of it.The important point is that the great renaissance Dam is, as you know, a hydroelectric dam business.Generating electricity and joins its natural course.I think the problem is the greedy mentality on the river. As Global warming is inevitable there could be shortage of water elsewhere in the world, weather GRD is built or not.Humanity should look for win win scenarios and look for alternative renewable energies, save energy and water. As far as African case is concerned,we shouldn't refer back colonial treaties and the 100 year assignment of Colonial powers. We should look for Pan African solution and trigger African renaissance.
Amanpour, lets discuss about your ancestors and their devious acts during colonialism era how they cut short many countries from the Nile water! A simple logic! Most of the water originates in Ethiopia and Ethiopia and other stream countries should be able to use the water just like Egypt. It makes me so sick when I hear Egypt's share is almost all of the Nile water.
Poor journalism on christian amanpours!!!!
You Egyptian should know how to be humble. That is what you have been lacking ever since this crises started. For God sake remember that Ethiopia is a source for Nile. You should realize and be thankful for this fact. You owe Ethiopia and Ethiopian people, for their patient for the last many decades. Ethiopians, never deserve such resistance and hatred especially from you, for you yourself is claiming that nile is your life, and Ethiopians have been letting you to use Nile so far. Such approach would not help you anymore, time has been changed. We are not trying to hurt you, even though your first reaction was to destabilize the peace and security we are having. You always wishes that we would have not existed at all. We are peaceful and loving people. Nile will be built, you will see that and you will also prove that we are not a kind of people you think of us.
I am a Coptic Egyptian and I love Ethiopia and Ethiopians. We share communion with the great Ethiopian church and Egyptians are NOT war loving people!! We are just run currently by an idiotic and terrorist organization! But we really need to reach an agreement on the Nile!! It is equally important to both countries!
poor journalism, we would like to hear both sides of the story. unless you are in favor of covering famine in Ethiopia.Ethiopia should manipulate the river their source for irrigation or dam whatever, it needs to feed their people. it is up to Ethiopia leaderships, they have been sleeping for so long, it is agony when Egypt farming the dessert and enjoy the fruit of Nile, Ethiopia was starving / dying in famine. the mother of river Nile Ethiopia. how in the world Egypt has a say in Ethiopia business building dam in their own sovereignty. Ethiopia is not building dams in Cairo or Alexandria. Egypt must work with Ethiopian authority to avoid confrontation. Ethiopia will not tolerate extremist ideas from Egypt. We know who you people are, it is obvious the meeting /discussion held of your congress regarding the river Nile shows how your government function. your congress support creating civil war in Ethiopia by training extremist group or bomb Ethiopian dams, and so on . terrorist ideas does not work in Ethiopia or anywhere among civilized nation.
poor jornalism, shame on you amanpour we don't expect like this the biggest channel in the world cnn It's one side history we are not building dam in cairo It's on our teritory we have full right to do that
First watch out your country problem in your home landhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnYnZgmq-c4 and stop interfereing in our soverign land Ethiopia ,who is source of nile ,"Nile comes from heaven ha!" .Not only the people but also the land doesn't like to be defeated. for reference ask Italian Brothers. Try to do something to our Dam?...Don't even think about it.Heroism is not on jets and geeky toys it is inside Big heart ,that is in our chest and our blood.
Subhan Alha, Nile is gift of Etiopia to Egypt .Therefore we Egyptian must know Ethiopia is our mother land and we have to lkeep our love with our brothers and sisters in ethiopia. My opinien let us build the dam together fur muitchual benfit.long life for ethiopia(nile)
Mauritius stands with Ethiopia.
If Egypt wants a war, we will give her a war. But a friendly advice to Egypt from an Ethiopian is that anyone who dared to harm Ethiopia had historically been beaten to great humiliation. Ethiopia once again will be the new power in Africa so deal with it and get with the program!
1956 contract b/n Egypt & Sudan is not includeid Ethiopia b/s Ethiopia is not Colnializition ,Nile is our BLOOD....
LET THEM REPEAT HISTORY
The Egyptians invaded from their coastal possessions in what is now Eritrea. The armies of Yohannes and Isma'il met at Gundat on the morning of 16 November 1875. The Egyptians were vastly outnumbered and their forces were completely destroyed. News of this huge defeat was suppressed in Egypt for fear that it would undermine the government of the Khedive. The Egyptians tried again to invade from the north, but were again defeated at the battle of Gura in March 1876.
Had the utmost respect for you Amanpour in your Bosnian war reporting. This is poor journalism at its best. What happened to you? You were the icon on how journalism was to be covered, and look at you now. Where is the balance that you had? No wonder everybody has resorted to watching Zainab Bedawi these days!!!!
what other countires do with THEIR resources within THEIR boarders is non of egypts business.
But the racist egyptians think they are better than everybody else.
But wanna comment that you have a very nice internet site , I love the style and design it really stands out.
