Will Egypt get a second chance at democracy?
That’s what the world is asking, a week after Egypt’s military forced President Mohamed Morsy from office, after a year of what the opposition called tyrannical governance.
“Second chances are rare in any country,” U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns said in Cairo on Monday, after meeting with the interim leader, Adly Mansour.
Speaking with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Frank Wisner, the former U.S. envoy to Egypt, said that Egypt should seize the opportunity.
“[It’s] a second chance,” he said. “One worth achieving, and there’s a chance Egypt can do it.
Last week, Egypt’s acting foreign minister, Mohamed Kamel Amr, said that there would be a “maximum of six to seven months” before new presidential elections are held.
“It’s an adventuresome goal, but it’s not impossible,” Wisner said in reaction. “Much of the construction has already been written, Egypt has a very sophisticated election machinery.”
What is critical between now and then, Wisner said, was consensus-building.
“I can’t predict what the Muslim Brothers will do,” he said. “I know they are being called upon to join. But it is an opportunity for Egypt to bind up its wounds and come together.”

I don't think that this is going to be a democracy again.
I am an Egyptian man cast has voted 8 times.Then the soldiers came in for one minute they cancel voice ..I am not of the Muslim Brotherhood ..I supported the legitimacy . Adli Mansour dont represent me ..legitimate president-elect Mohamed Morsi only him represent me ..Shame on the U.S. government to recognize adli government, which came after the coup
I agree. The only second chance that is meaningful is by getting our kidnapped president back in his office, and then take it from there.
Are you sure you are not MB since only MB members make a point of stating that they are not MB members. Regardless of where your loyalty is lets discuss democracy because last time i checked democracy was not just a ballot box which allowed a means for the majority to exact tyranny on other minorities. So Morsi was elected in a free and fair election but under one year of Morsi's rule women were abused, Coptic christian were abused and anyone who was not MB was threatened and terrorized. Corruption stayed the same the economy was trashed and crime skyrocketed.
Lets not also forget the murder of the Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai peninsula and Morsi actively preventing the military for doing any action to get those terrorists.
And all that coming from a president who won the elections with a 51% lead over his opponent. Mosi would have spared himself and the MB the humiliation if he had acted like a truly democratic president and called for early elections, had he won he would have silenced all his opponents and if he had lost people would still think highly of the MB and they would have gotten another chance soon.
it's NOT a coup.. the real second chance is by ousting morsi and his brotherhood.. he was elected but didn't respect the law the democracy, democracy is not only the election box. he was as a gang leader, and his brotherhood was acting as a gang, i am so happy he was ousted, and proud of the over 33 millions who went out to oust him.
To be frank and fair, for the first time after the fall of President Mubarak, Egypt has a chance to implement democratic procedures to rule the country. The period of turmoil and tension between Jan.2011 and June 30,2013 was the darkest period in Egyptian history. With the exit of Morsi, Egypt is on the threshold of a new era. When free and fair elections are conducted within a matter of one year, Egypt will join the ranks of democratic countries and could be on par with the best.However Egypt should take care to keep fascist and fanatic forces at bay and outlaw them for ever.
What will make it different ? All these so called liberal parties have no real presence on the ground. It's either they will ban the Islamic parties who have the real presence all over Egypt, so this is not a second chane for democracy at all. Or they will let them go to the elections fairly and in this case the Islamists will do well and get back into power. Then the liberal parties will call the army for a coup again ?!
Their liberalism is disgusting. They only democracy they believe in is the one that gets THEM into power.
This stinky American policy under zionist influence would never give a chance to democracy in the Middle East. CNN is certainly a part of it. Amanpour is orchestrating the bitter comedy. What a show! Millions were rallying on streets, DOWN the Mursi government. More millions rallying to support Mursi, support the puppet government. Congrats Amanpour. Mission on it is way but not done yet!
Respecting the rights of the Coptic Christians, who are 10% of the population, would further the cause of democracy. So would a conscious decision not to turn the clock back on religious tolerance where Egypt may not be as secular as Turkey but is much less orthodox than the monarchies in the region.
Suddenly the saudi and gulf states are very generous and paid 12 billion dollars to Egypt. . What is that they bought so dearly and what Egyptians sold so blindly. The answer is very obvious. The Egyptian people and their freedom.
