Israel: Negotiations not a favor to U.S.

July 22nd, 2013
04:24 PM ET

By Mick Krever and Claire Calzonetti, CNN

Israel’s decision to agree to preliminary talks with the Palestinians are not because of outside pressure but rather because of the country’s own interest, the Israel's top point person for the talks, Tzipi Livni, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

“It’s not a favor to the Palestinians, not to the E.U., and not even to the President of the United States,” Livni, who is also Justice Minister, told Amanpour from Jerusalem. “It is the interest of Israel.”

Livni said that she hoped to meet with the Palestinians in the next few days, and lay the groundwork for direct negotiations between the highest levels of government among the Israelis and Palestinians.

“I support deeply not only the idea of negotiations,” Livni said, “but the idea of the need to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Talks have been in complete stalemate for years – giving the appearance of a virtually intractable problem with no solution in sight.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced the agreement on Friday; he has been shuffling in and out of the region for months, speaking with both sides.

Livni praised Kerry’s work so far, saying he “really was amazing here.”

The terms of negotiations have not been made public, but among the most contentious issues for starting talks are using the 1967 borders, Israeli settlement building in the West Bank, and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Israel will reportedly release some prisoners they describe as “heavyweight,” but Livni was circumspect about revealing anything that had been agreed to by either side so far.

“The whole idea is that – to build trust and confidence,” Livni explained, “and not to enter into this blame game that we used to have in the last years.”

As a matter of fact I DO believe them because "as per reports" there were 16,728,000 Jews in 1939. I DO NOT believe YOU, however, because your " 5 mn JEWS around" figure was A LIE.

I believe Israel. I believe they are in violation of UN resolution 242 as well as violating the 4th Geneva convention. I believe Israel is guilty.

Tell me, how did Israel steal land from the palestinians? When England gave over control of the land, they offered to divide it equally among the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Palestinians emphatically refused. The land was given to Israel, then the Palestinians and their friends from all around attacked Israel, trying to take THEIR land by force. Israel destroyed them. If Israel took any land from that conflict, too bad. Stop rewriting history because you have a problem with Israel. And don't say I'm the one rewriting either. Anyone with half a brain can look this up. Just go away.

What the US and Israel are doing in the ME is based on “Might makes it right and legal”. The same applies to his reference as to the stolen land from the Mexicans and Germans. The US makes it possible for Israel to continue as an Apartheid state regardless of International Law and what the vast majority of the World community thinks. The US and Israel also supported the Apartheid state of South Africa and clearly were on the wrong side of history then as they are now. Hans for your information, might makes it possible for a short period of time but it doesn’t make it right or legal. But everyone who is opposed to your fascist opinion is an Anti-Semite.

I hope the Palestinians get exactly what the world wishes for them – Jewish democracy removed from their lives and that they forever be ruled by Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. That's exactly what they want and exactly what they deserve! Enjoy Palestine, enjoy your new world! No more apartheid, Nazi Israelis, just the reality of Hamas and the PA ruling you. FOREVER AND EVER. Good luck and enjoy! The world will envy your luck!

Palestinians ALREADY GOT what they've asked for, a Jew-free Palestinian-controlled state in Gaza. Somehow they still blame the Jews for it...

"using the 1967 borders, Israeli settlement building in the West Bank, and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel." Typical CNN reporting of lies.
There are no and never were 1967 borders. The ceasefire lines of 1948 were in place and according to the Rhodes agreements, signed by the Arabs, final borders were to be determined by negotiations. Of course, the Palestinians did not exist when the Rhodes agreements were signed, these were invented by the Egyptian Arafat in 1965.What Palestinian prisoners? Murderers and terrorists who killed hundreds of innocent Jewish children, women and men. CNN never fails to give the world Hamas propagenda!

The negotiations between the two is a welcome development because it was not brought about by coercion. I also hope there would be no external influences that may scuttle peace efforts. This may be the only chance the two nations have at peace, after which the regional conflicts between Sunni and Shia may also engulf them.

Aqusition of land and expansion of once territory is mostly achiveable through war so if Israel have beeen able to invade and ocupy any place, then callin it an Israeli stolen land will be a serious misconception and ignorant
