Iran President Rouhani’s English-language message to the American people

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday delivered his first English-language TV message to the American people in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
"I would like to say to American people: I bring peace and friendship from Iranians to Americans," he said.
Rouhani is in many ways the "it" man of this U.N. General Assembly, where Western leaders are trying to gauge whether his diplomatic overtures will translate into concrete policy changes.
He has recently exchanged letters with U.S. President Barack Obama, and there had been suspicion brewing in diplomatic circles that the two leaders would meet face-to-face, informally, at the United Nations in New York.
"There were some talks about it," Rouhani told Amanpour through a translator. "And preparation for the work was done a bit as well."
"The United States declared its interest in having such a meeting, and in principle Iran could have under certain circumstances allowed for it to happen," he said. "But I believe we didn't have sufficient time to really coordinate the meeting to the full extent that we needed to."
Two senior U.S. administration officials told CNN on Tuesday that the encounter was called off because it was considered "too complicated" for Iran back home.
Complicated domestic politics or not, the Iranian president made clear that he has full permission from Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to negotiate with the West.
"I think that the president of Iran has the authority whenever the national interest of the country is involved," Rouhani told Amanpour. "The supreme leader of Iran has said that should negotiations be necessary for the national interest of the country, he is in fact not opposed to it."
"Now, if an opportunity was created today, had arisen today," the Iranian president said, "and the prep work for that had been done, most probably the talks would have haven taken place, primarily focused on the nuclear issue or the developments on the Middle East. Therefore the supreme leader, I can tell you, has given permission for my government to freely negotiate on these issues."
Rouhani stands in stark contrast to his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who used his speeches at the U.N. to spew rhetoric; he was famous for his questioning of the Holocaust.
"I have said before that I am not a historian, and that when it comes to speaking of the dimensions of the Holocaust it is the historians that should reflect on it," Rouhani told Amanpour. "But in general I can tell you that any crime that happens in history against humanity, including the crime the Nazis committed towards the Jews, as well as non-Jewish people, was reprehensible and condemnable as far as we are concerned."

Aside from the propaganda, Iranian are very hospitable people. It really is the nature Iranians to be so considerate to a fault and the pleasantries are numerous. I think Ruhani was being genuine but "who knows" !. He knows that Khomeni and the Republican Guard are watching him. He has his own politics like any other statesmen. I don't think any past Iranian president would have gone so far as this one if he didn't mean it...and yes the sanctions APPEAR to be working.
What makes me nervous is this Syrian/ Iran / Russian axis and how this current situation with Iran is all of sudden - it appears this is a time for reconciliation. Call me optimistic, naïve or whatever, but I really have respect for this new Iranian leader, President Rouhani. With talks set to begin between John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart, I'm hopeful that the nuclear issue can be resolved fairly soon. I feel the Iranian & American people deserve this chance and President Obama and President Rouhani both seem to be willing to offer that chance to them. Please, let diplomacy continue to work. I'm tired of the war-mongers both in America and in other countries (cough...Israel).

The ironic aspect between Islam and the word 'peace' is that it is not used on the same context as everyone else uses the word.
For example, an army of 400 heavily armed, battle-hardened Chechen militia crossed into Dagestan in September, 1999. They came upon a village supposedly guarded by 13 poorly trained, lightly armed Russian boy-conscripts. The frightened young men fought valiantly until they ran out of ammo. However, 7 of the youths were able to get out and run away while the others held off the militants until the other soldiers were gone.
The militant leader attempted to 'negotiate' for the Russian soldiers' surrender. The boys said no. Then the leader 'vowed' to give them POW status if they surrendered and 'gave him his word'. The dropped their weapons and went with the militants.
What happened next you might ask;
Sadly, use google to look up; "Execution of 6 Russian soldiers in Dagestan" and if you can stomach it, see for yourself what Muslims mean by the word 'peace'.

Can't we just TRY to talk with them? Look at the Green Revolution a few years back. There are millions upon millions of young Iranians who want better relations with us and the West. Although I admit it hasn't been in Iran, I have never met an Iranian person, anywhere, that I did not like. I would like to visit Iran someday. What a cultural heritage! There are many other places in the world that we Americans should visit and learn from. Pick one... anywhere!

I'm glad to see the diplomacy route is being pursued but I would like to ensure this doesn't give the Islamic Republic any legitimacy; Barack Obama is an elected representative, whereas Rouhani was elected as 'the least worst of the rest', from a selection by a regime that lost any little legitimacy it had when it persecuted so many innocent Iranians during the previous election; nothing the regime does now can repay for the rape and killing of the young innocent Iranians in Kahrizak and places alike.
We can't really say US and Iran are pursuing diplomacy, but rather the US and a gang of thugs who really lack any legitimate internal oversight of what they do (i.e. no independent judiciary) so they need international pressure to keep them at bay, are doing so.
I hope this softening tone doesn't make the US and the international community disregard the human rights situation in Iran; I would have liked to see Obama stress the issue of human rights more in his speech today.
We see that unfortunately today with China, where the human rights situation is the worst it could be (way worse than in Iran), but the west is ever so cautious to tell Chinese leaders to respect human rights (they have to dance around it so carefully before they make a statement). For some reason, it seems an innocent person dieing in China attracts less of the west's attention and rhetoric than in Iran, where, rightly, any human rights misbehavour is condemned very strongly by the west. Let's hope that at least this doesn't change in Iran with the softening tone between the two countries. A loss of life and freedom is still a loss, no matter what the tone of the relationship.

It is refreshing to see a friendly open president of Iran. Their last president was always on the attack and thrived on making the tensions worse. I hope there will be true dialog and understanding in the future. I am still concerned about their supreme leader who's entire career is based on hatred of America. I believe the supreme leader will try to derail any progress.

As an American, a military veteran and a world citizen who believes in peace. Like citizens of most countries who's governments are ignorant of each other – we the people believe and understand that it is our Governments who do not listen to the people, do not try to be diplomatic, nor ensue peaceful actions. i read comments for an hour and i wanna tell u guys some facts. i am iranian, i live in iran so information is direct and up-to-date, i wanna mention some points:
1. do u notice that the literature of hardlines is the same all over the world? bush, netanyahu, ahmadinejad, fox news and keyhan newspaper in iran, all employ the same words. their benefits lies where the negotiation tables dont exist. and big mouths and loud sounds r seen and heard better, unfortunately
2. iranian people really love to b part of global society, they've been so since they existed. and notice: we hate war because we experienced it whole 8 yrs. we were invaded by saddam hussein army which costed iran decades of delay in developing period and costed iraq as much and even more. have u ever seen or heard an iranian comitting suicidal missions? iranians like relationship, business, education. fundamentalism finds ears in arab countries, who accidentally(!) r west allies. and believe me: human rights and civil society and public education in iran and turkey stand at much higher level than all middle east countries
3.sanctions targets r people, unfortunately. they dont pause governmental programs, state finds a way to progress in its path, so just iranian people, specially poor ones r influenced here: like leonard cohen says"the poor stay poor, the rich get rich"
4. i dont like religious politics and i prefer my country to b in the hands of secular governers, but believe me, the election in iran was real, of course everyone can not b a candidate here, but where they can? mechanisms are different, but they exist everywhere in world to make sure that candidates r capable enough and have base people support. i think iran's mechanisms are inadequate, but after that, votes were really read and prez. rouhani had major margin, he was even 2nd choice of many who voted other candidates

Of course we are ready to make friends with the Iranians!!!! We've been ready for years, but Ahmadinejad clearly didn't want that. I always felt frustrated that the Iranian government would just attack, attack, attack and blame the west for everything at every given chance. Of course we want peace too, but threatning to wipe israel off the map is obviously not the right way to achieve peace.
Most of us look with hope at President Rouhani. He is a breath of fresh air after your last president. I am hoping that this leads to more dialog and understanding between the 2 countries. Furthermore, staying in a country for several years, doesn't make you fluent in speaking their language. It helps to understand them better though. Everyone knows insanity is the act of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We have tried threats of war and sanctions against Iran for years and it has changed nothing. Now we have an opportunity to sit down and have a diplomatic discussion with their new President and we would instead choose to continue doing the same thing? That is insane.

It's really amazing to see some Americans(?) still have fantasies about Iran and their nuclear program. For Iran, or any small country, a nuclear weapon is the only way to protect itself from being manipulated or interfered by other countries. I believe Iran will get its own nuclear bomb eventually, the question is when. All you Americans can do is to postpone it as long as possible, not to accelerate it.
Iran has not proved itself to be stable or mature enough to have a bomb. The United States has been in countless wars since WW2 and has not used, or threatened to use, a bomb. Neither has any of the countries that are currently nuclear powers. I am afraid that with leaders like Ahmadinejad and some of the more fanatical religious leaders, Iran has not proved itself to stable and mature politically. I do think the people of Iran are ready for peace, but I don't trust the leaders.
All I am saying, is give peace a chance.
Peace does not come from talking, handshaking, and smiling. You have to earn it. Nuclear bomb is the ultimate solution to maintain peace with super powers like Russia or United States.

I still don't trust them but we should establish official relations. Even at the height of the Cold War we still maintained relations with our enemies. Here is a thread of typical comments on a political issue that is more important then some of us choose to believe. There's the negative, there's the positive, and then there's the stupidity that never seizes to amaze me. For those who looked at this in a positive light, i commend you because I know the hope this has given many people. Even if this hope is just planted or a "Test" it is still a step somewhere and sometimes thats all we need to relieve our hearts. Seriously, for those of you whether Iranian, American, or both, who have looked and ridiculed this as being something negative, good luck in life because your negativity is weakness and a way of setting yourself up for disappointment. Life is about decisions and what you decide gets you where you are. Keep an open mind and an open heart, and even if there is disappointment in the end, just know that you have done yourself and the world good just by being positive. For the rest who literally rambled something in hopes of getting people's blood boiling, i am sorry you are uneducated. No one can help you but you can help yourself by doing research, opening up the mind, and doing some soul searching.

In my opinion, the United States has not been very successful in its recent two ventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have killed more people in those countries than whom we rescued them from. Also, our economy is not doing so well and thou we still like to say that the use of Military force is an option, it really is only a last option ( Syria is a clear example).
Also, it took Iran quite a while to get rid of its own George Bush, by this I mean Ahmadinejad. Now, we have two Presidents that speak the same language. The only question now for both leaders is how to get the approval of the right wing conservatives in their own nations? both in the US and Iran. How can president Obama convince 34 years of ill actions by Iran against the US? How will he make friends with the only Nation ever to attack its embassy and taking its staff as hostages for 444 days? How can they forget about operation Eagle Claws and the embarrassment it left behind? and many more... also on the Iranian side, how will Rohani convince the right to forget about the Coup de tar against a democratic government of Dr Mosadegh and the re-installation of the Shah? What will he tell them about the US Navy shooting down a passenger plane and killing all aboard on the Persian Gulf? What will he tell them about the US support for Iraq and actively killing Iranian soldiers in the last days of the Iran-Iraq war?
Now to add to all the problems is the Israel Government who will have APAC making sure that the Jewish state is looked after before the interest of the US in many ways. Even the Arab neighbors of Iran are scared of such friendship since they well know that with such a friendship their biggest customer will have a new supplier. Iran is a very powerful nation and its main wealth is its youth and level of education available to them. A nation with 60% aged 34 or less. No country in the region, even with equal amount of natural resources can match that. Lest not forget that Iran is second reserve holder of natural crude oil among OPEC nations and recently been calculated to have the most natural gas even more than Russia. Add to that Copper(worlds second), Iron Ore, and yes, Uranium.
Now just imagine that US companies may enter into a country that has not been developed well enough due to lack of modern technology or sanctions or simply paying ten fold for such needs in the black market for the past 34 years.
I as an American-Iranian would like to see this friendship mature into something more meaningful. May the will exist to bring ever lasting peace to both nations.

You have to sufficiently loyal to the Islamic system and to the "supreme" leader to even be allowed to stand as president of Iran, hence why only a handful of candidates pass the Islamic Guardians vetting process. Thousands of even islamic candidates don't pass. So, in this sham democratic process, this guy Rouhani passed the test.
Yes, ofcourse it is true that he is not as extreme as somebody like previous president Ahmadinejad. However he and Ahmadinejad have the exact same goals – to promote and flourish the Islamic regime – but their methods are different!
