Iran President Rouhani’s English-language message to the American people

September 24th, 2013
09:26 PM ET

Watch Amanpour's interview with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on CNN International on Wednesday at 1400 ET / 2000 CET

By Mick Krever, CNN

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday delivered his first English-language TV message to the American people in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

"I would like to say to American people: I bring peace and friendship from Iranians to Americans," he said.

Rouhani is in many ways the "it" man of this U.N. General Assembly, where Western leaders are trying to gauge whether his diplomatic overtures will translate into concrete policy changes.

He has recently exchanged letters with U.S. President Barack Obama, and there had been suspicion brewing in diplomatic circles that the two leaders would meet face-to-face, informally, at the United Nations in New York.

"There were some talks about it," Rouhani told Amanpour through a translator. "And preparation for the work was done a bit as well."

"The United States declared its interest in having such a meeting, and in principle Iran could have under certain circumstances allowed for it to happen," he said. "But I believe we didn't have sufficient time to really coordinate the meeting to the full extent that we needed to."

Two senior U.S. administration officials told CNN on Tuesday that the encounter was called off because it was considered "too complicated" for Iran back home.

Complicated domestic politics or not, the Iranian president made clear that he has full permission from Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to negotiate with the West.

"I think that the president of Iran has the authority whenever the national interest of the country is involved," Rouhani told Amanpour. "The supreme leader of Iran has said that should negotiations be necessary for the national interest of the country, he is in fact not opposed to it."

"Now, if an opportunity was created today, had arisen today," the Iranian president said, "and the prep work for that had been done, most probably the talks would have haven taken place, primarily focused on the nuclear issue or the developments on the Middle East. Therefore the supreme leader, I can tell you, has given permission for my government to freely negotiate on these issues."

Rouhani stands in stark contrast to his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who used his speeches at the U.N. to spew rhetoric; he was famous for his questioning of the Holocaust.

"I have said before that I am not a historian, and that when it comes to speaking of the dimensions of the Holocaust it is the historians that should reflect on it," Rouhani told Amanpour. "But in general I can tell you that any crime that happens in history against humanity, including the crime the Nazis committed towards the Jews, as well as non-Jewish people, was reprehensible and condemnable as far as we are concerned."

Hey American! Is that all you know about Iranians? Is that all media has taught you? These people are speaking in Farsi, and they are not saying anything about US! Change the channel, learn more about people from my country!

Yes these fellows are Iranians and they are arguing in Farsi, but one started with "death to the Islamic Republic" and the others are mostly opposing him, saying Iran and USA relations must improve.

Hey American, You are right about the word "death" but the above conversation is about Iran's interior conflict and not the America. There are many people and nations who don't support and like the peace between two countries since it would endanger their benefits and corruptions.

      • Iran continues to build nuclear bombs

Iran continues to build nuclear bombs to destroy Israel. Iran is working against the will of its citizens, forcing them to be religious. These are nice words of a deceiving leader. the next holocaust for the Jews is certain. nobody hide nuclear facilities under the ground if he wants peace let face the truth. A world without Islam is a better world for all of us, even for the muslims themself.Muslims are the first to suffer from their religion. Female genital mutilation and hatred of infidels that leads to a killing of innocent people. So Ruhani is fooling the world. He wants to kill the jewish infidels. He is depressing his people the Iranians. In summary: NICE WORDS,NUCLEAR BOMBS, JEWISH HOLOCOAST.

You should be ashamed of yourself. If you are a true patriotic Iranian, you would not use the word "marg", I know what it means. A true Iranian whether he likes or hates the current regime, would rather say the persian word of "reform", whatever it maybe. With the amount of hate some of the words used here, you will not get what you want. Shame on the haters here.

I can just say I'm not going to fall in love with him as I fell for Khatami a decade ago. He is more of a politician rather than a thoughtful innate reformist. I like him, but actually the time is short and soon Khameneie will start to make him serious problems. He should do whatever he can as fast as possible.

Rouhani knows he is dealing with a country filled with fools. He knows that more flies are attracted to honey than vinegar The previous nutjob tried vinegar and got nowhere, now it is time to try smiles and honey. He is doing no more than laying a trap for the simple minded and god knows this country is full of them, right up to and including the White House. It is going to be interesting to see how many fools he is able to reel in.

Aside from the propaganda, Iranian are very hospitable people. It really is the nature Iranians to be so considerate to a fault and the pleasantries are numerous. I think Ruhani was being genuine but "who knows" !. He knows that Khomeni and the Republican Guard are watching him. He has his own politics like any other statesmen. I don't think any past Iranian president would have gone so far as this one if he didn't mean it...and yes the sanctions APPEAR to be working.

What makes me nervous is this Syrian/ Iran / Russian axis and how this current situation with Iran is all of sudden - it appears this is a time for reconciliation. I think fighting another war is costly, stupid and costly. Did I say costly? (e.g. blood and money). If we have HAD 30+ cold war with the USSR (not that its really over) and HAVE build diplomatic relations with Communist China...normal relationships with Iran is possible.

All I am hoping is that our president take the initial steps toward the friendship with Americans. As he stated before, American people are highly respected and we Iranian nation have no animosity toward them. What we are looking for is the mutual respect in order to find the common grounds between the 2 countries of Iran and the U.S. Obviously Zionists are not going to be happy about our relations with Americans.

And there are many Americans who have great respect for the Iranian people, myself included. It's unfortunate that politicians and hateful people get the most attention when it comes to international relations because it creates a skewed view of reality. Most Americans and most Iranians seem to just want peace and friendship between the countries.

You should be proud of him. Most Iranians want to be friends with the U.S. again, and America must take these progressive conciliatory messages from the new Iranian President seriously. If we are to pursue peace in the world, we must engage Iran constructively with good intentions. Your one of the few. Problem with Iran is they have a 'supreme leader'. This is archaic / backwards and absolutely is not conducive to conversation that will allow us to move forward. Its like obama talking to a foreign minister who has to return to his boss and get approval. Get rid of this crusty dude and have a real democracy, not a fake one.

Yeah, I guess you can, except the fact that your brother in law is not a head of a state that has been controlling their proxy states to do quite a few evil acts of terror (Hizbolla is fully backed up by Iran, so were the Palestinians in the Intifada of 2002 were they slaughtered quite a few inoccents on purpose, and so is the Syrian regime). Your brother in law is also not a head of a state that has a large amount of oil, yet pursues nuclear power for 'civilian gains' in hidden, well defeneded, decentralized bunkers.

Don't be fooled, Rouhani is just the last tactic from the masterminds there.

It is amazing how we keep circling around the same issue! I wonder who is behind that!!!
In any rate the history can not be deleted. Iranians have saved more Jews than any other nation COMBINED! even as late as WWII by commissioning their embassy in occupied France by issuing fake passports to Jews and have the flee the country as Iranian nationals.(I bet most people didn't know that). Iranians have never harmed Jews. Perhaps that is why Iran holds the most Jewish population outside Israel. The time has come for Iran to be recognized at the table. Think about who has the motive to stop the peace between Iran and the US? Who would want US to do the dirty work and get into war with Iran? Who would benefit? The answer is the same as the ones who are trying to discredit Iranian efforts.

The Iranians might well love Jews but they hate the nation Israel and have vowed to totally destroy it and drive it's people into the sea. The crackpot president they had previously must have made that threat several hundred times while he was in office. He was merely voicing the will of the clerics.

I was not condemning all Americans or all Israelis. However, once again in my opinion only, I feel there are certain 'actors' in both countries who would rather fight than talk. You have your opinion and I respect that as well. Thank you...

    ADAM ....

Stop kissing Israeli asses man! It is so unfortunate that instead of Israel looking like a US colony, US is looking like an Israeli colony. We people of iran do not have anything against the Jewish people, although I think BB and Ahmadinejad were in bed together and both are so disgusting. Israel benefits from the enmity between Iran and US because they can this way rip your tax payer dollar off 3 billion dollars every year! Ally! what ally? Shah of Iran was you best ally and your government stabbed him in the back! I appreciate people like Elena who are not slaves of others as you are. Time changes and everything change. As long as you continue to make Israel more important than anything else, nothing will change. You are America and we are Iran. Let Israel solve its own problems and not cry like a whining baby all the time. If it was not because of our king, Cyrus the great they would not even exist today and I wonder how the Israeli prime minister dares we should make sure people of Iran starve to death by completely stopping their oil and gas exports.

The same peace given to the innocent people killed in the bomb attack in Argentina?
The same peace that killed several tourists relaxing on the Bulgarian coast?
The same peace that Iran attempted to use when they planned a massive attack on a restaurant in Washington for the purpose of killing one person?

Yeah....I can see how they represent a 'religion of peace', the same message the mormons conveyed during their massacres of people heading west.

Don't be narrow minded. Islam is a religion of peace. They believe in a second coming of Christ, Jews do not. Islam has extremists just as the Jews and Christians. Islam may be a religion of peace, but too many of its fundamentalist followers see it otherwise.

Westboro is but a handful of nuts, who speak loudly and self-righteously, but could be mopped up in an instant if they dared venture to the "dark side".

And comparing current day Islamic fundamentalists with the Crusades from a thousand years ago ... really? This is 2013, not the early 1000's.

        First, I'm not your "bruh".

Second, you conveniently stop your historical reference in the 50's. Try looking back a bit further – particularly at Russian and British control over Iran.

Third, I'll note that "bruh" rhymes with "duh" ... another gutteral sound you are likely fond of emitting ... often.

The ironic aspect between Islam and the word 'peace' is that it is not used on the same context as everyone else uses the word.
For example, an army of 400 heavily armed, battle-hardened Chechen militia crossed into Dagestan in September, 1999. They came upon a village supposedly guarded by 13 poorly trained, lightly armed Russian boy-conscripts. The frightened young men fought valiantly until they ran out of ammo. However, 7 of the youths were able to get out and run away while the others held off the militants until the other soldiers were gone.
The militant leader attempted to 'negotiate' for the Russian soldiers' surrender. The boys said no. Then the leader 'vowed' to give them POW status if they surrendered and 'gave him his word'. The dropped their weapons and went with the militants.
    What happened next you might ask;
Sadly, use google to look up; "Execution of 6 Russian soldiers in Dagestan" and if you can stomach it, see for yourself what Muslims mean by the word 'peace'.

Also keep in mind; The Koran says it is ok for a member of the faithful to lie to an 'infidel', but sinful to lie to another Muslim- figure that one out?

If he offers his hand in friendship, we're idiots not to take it, point blank. There was more than enough blame to go around in '79. We did, in fact, topple their elected leader and supported a brutal dictator in their country for a long time. If there is even a chance of moving past that chapter in our shared history, we need to shake his hand, take him at his word, and engage. Then his sincerity or lack thereof will be borne out in actions.

I was greatly encouraged to hear this man wish Jews in his country and everywhere a happy new year. That's a big departure from the rhetoric of his predecessor. I say lets suspend our disbelief and take the man at his word. We're big enough as a people to do that.

I'm glad to see the diplomacy route is being pursued but I would like to ensure this doesn't give the Islamic Republic any legitimacy; Barack Obama is an elected representative, whereas Rouhani was elected as 'the least worst of the rest', from a selection by a regime that lost any little legitimacy it had when it persecuted so many innocent Iranians during the previous election; nothing the regime does now can repay for the rape and killing of the young innocent Iranians in Kahrizak and places alike.

We can't really say US and Iran are pursuing diplomacy, but rather the US and a gang of thugs who really lack any legitimate internal oversight of what they do (i.e. no independent judiciary) so they need international pressure to keep them at bay, are doing so.

I hope this softening tone doesn't make the US and the international community disregard the human rights situation in Iran; I would have liked to see Obama stress the issue of human rights more in his speech today.

We see that unfortunately today with China, where the human rights situation is the worst it could be (way worse than in Iran), but the west is ever so cautious to tell Chinese leaders to respect human rights (they have to dance around it so carefully before they make a statement). For some reason, it seems an innocent person dieing in China attracts less of the west's attention and rhetoric than in Iran, where, rightly, any human rights misbehavour is condemned very strongly by the west. Let's hope that at least this doesn't change in Iran with the softening tone between the two countries. A loss of life and freedom is still a loss, no matter what the tone of the relationship.

It is refreshing to see a friendly open president of Iran. Their last president was always on the attack and thrived on making the tensions worse. I hope there will be true dialog and understanding in the future. I am still concerned about their supreme leader who's entire career is based on hatred of America. I believe the supreme leader will try to derail any progress.

As an American, a military veteran and a world citizen who believes in peace. Like citizens of most countries who's governments are ignorant of each other – we the people believe and understand that it is our Governments who do not listen to the people, do not try to be diplomatic, nor ensue peaceful actions. Whilst I agree that nuclear programmes for all countries should be banned, certain Governments with rogue histories should be prevented from having nuclear weapons – by force if necessary. If your nuclear programme is truily for energy purposes only – then let the world monitors watch. Nobody wants war and the American people want peace with the people of Iran equally. I hope the actions from Iran are honest and we can work towards peace and productivity for each of our benefit

There is no way you're an American. No American spells "program" the way you do. Your spelling betrays your nationality. You're a Brit. The very people who have doggedly tried to disintegrate and control Iran and its resources for the last 150 years, without success. You're not fooling anyone pal. But nice try. Next time do better research on how to impersonate an American.

When Rouhani says "I am not a historian to judge the Holocaust"; that is simply another way to deny the genocide of the Jewish people. "He is not a historian"? Any dummy knows the Holocaust took place. It is indisputable that millions of Jews were killed in an attempt to exterminate the Jewish people. By copping out with the "I am not a historian card", Rouhani shows that he is no "moderate". He is awfully close to being a Holocaust denier and sounds just like Ahmadinejad with his parsing of words in not addressing the question. And he is bringing "friendship and peace to the American people". Does that mean that the "death to America", "death to Israel" chants will stop soon at Friday prayers? What utter nonsense. And shame on the people being fooled by the rhetoric of this man who is trying to present a false soft face to this evil, brutal regime.

"t is indisputable that millions of Jews were killed in an attempt to exterminate the Jewish people."

How is the "millions" indisputable? No concrete proof has ever presented as to the count of "millions". The best objective estimates are in the several hundred thousands. Well below one million. I'm not for one moment saying that excuses the murders. But "millions" is simply exaggerated. The guy who has done extensive research on this is himself a Jew.

No, you see "you're a loon" is not proof of anything. Well, maybe one thing. It is proof that you're clueless and you'll accept any claim without evidence, if it's repeated enough times. It's proof that you're a lemming.

      • sasss31

I am not here to debate an indisputable fact. You are a loon and it is important for people to see that it is a Holocaust denier such as yourself that cozies up with the Mullahs and are an anti-Israeli bigot.

        September 25, 2013 at 3:41 am |
      • UpsetVoter

I think your count is off. I believe that 13.7 million people died in those concentration camps and 6 million of them were Jewish. I also feel that the remaining 7.7 million non Jewish victims, which include 90% of the Gypsies, are being ignored by the teachings of the Holocaust. We can also add the millions of Russians who died as Hitler's army marched north.

        September 25, 2013 at 3:50 am |
      • John B.

You're a lemming. You'll swallow any garbage your superiors shove down your throat. You've never questioned those so-called "indisputable facts". How exactly are they so "indisputable"? Your programmed pea-size "brain" is so fixed that it won't even allow you to question things like this for one second. You're also incapable of comprehending simple English. I never denied the holocaust. But you're programmed to immediately switch to the "denier" mode as soon as anyone raises questions about the topic. You're just pathetic.

        September 25, 2013 at 3:52 am |
      • John B.

UpsetVoter, your "beliefs" are irrelevant. Only facts supported by evidence matter. Where are the facts and the evidence to support those numbers?

        September 25, 2013 at 3:55 am |
      • UpsetVoter

According to the German Ministry of Justice, there were over 1200 concentration camps. In Bergen-Belsan alone, the British military found 60,000 prisoners and 13,000 bodies waiting to be buried. 10,000 of the 60,000 died from years under the poor conditions shortly after the British arrived. This was obviously an above average camp size since 13,000 deaths in each of 1200 camps would equal 15.6 million dead in the camps. Bergen-Belsan was tiny compared to Auschwitz where the Soviet government initially claimed that 4 million people died. That number was considered to be greatly exaggerated and the more realistic death total for Auschwitz alone is currently between 800,000 and 900,000.

i read comments for an hour and i wanna tell u guys some facts. i am iranian, i live in iran so information is direct and up-to-date, i wanna mention some points:
    1. do u notice that the literature of hardlines is the same all over the world? bush, netanyahu, ahmadinejad, fox news and keyhan newspaper in iran, all employ the same words. their benefits lies where the negotiation tables dont exist. and big mouths and loud sounds r seen and heard better, unfortunately
    2. iranian people really love to b part of global society, they've been so since they existed. and notice: we hate war because we experienced it whole 8 yrs. we were invaded by saddam hussein army which costed iran decades of delay in developing period and costed iraq as much and even more. have u ever seen or heard an iranian comitting suicidal missions? iranians like relationship, business, education. fundamentalism finds ears in arab countries, who accidentally(!) r west allies. and believe me: human rights and civil society and public education in iran and turkey stand at much higher level than all middle east countries
3.sanctions targets r people, unfortunately. they dont pause governmental programs, state finds a way to progress in its path, so just iranian people, specially poor ones r influenced here: like leonard cohen says"the poor stay poor, the rich get rich"
    4. i dont like religious politics and i prefer my country to b in the hands of secular governers, but believe me, the election in iran was real, of course everyone can not b a candidate here, but where they can? mechanisms are different, but they exist everywhere in world to make sure that candidates r capable enough and have base people support. i think iran's mechanisms are inadequate, but after that, votes were really read and prez. rouhani had major margin, he was even 2nd choice of many who voted other candidates
    5. let's give way rouhani to pursue diplomacy. strategically, iran and us priorities and benefits, apart from israel, atand in one direction. but both rouhani and obama have difficulties in their own country. they must go step by step. some will b unhappy and begin to make pressures. but i wish rationality and moderation to overcome barriers in the way.
    6. at last, if some think we are ur enemies, make us friends, we r ready and we tell we r, are u ready too? what's the way to promote ur enemy to make better weapons? threatening them! dont threat iran and don't offend iranian pride, this makes many people really ur enemy, as well as when embassy hostage or 9.11 occured, u hated iranians and terrorists, respectively. why expect us to think differently?
diplomacy is the only correct choice

Of course we are ready to make friends with the Iranians!!!! We've been ready for years, but Ahmadinejad clearly didn't want that. I always felt frustrated that the Iranian government would just attack, attack, attack and blame the west for everything at every given chance. Of course we want peace too, but threatning to wipe israel off the map is obviously not the right way to achieve peace.

Most of us look with hope at President Rouhani. He is a breath of fresh air after your last president. I am hoping that this leads to more dialog and understanding between the 2 countries. Most of us Americans realize that the Iranian people are not our enemy but your government frequently has been for a very long time. My largest concern currently is your supreme leader who President Rouhani has to answer to. He has openly declared his hatred of us and routinely refers to us as "the great satin". Will he allow an open relationship between our 2 countries to flourish?

tnx for logical suggestions, i think iran state leader tells most of his words for internal political groups. every ideological authority (e.g soviet union, israel, islamic republic of iran, p.r.k and even neo-con's in usa) needs an enemy in order to make his existence seem necessary. but if his own benefits adjust relationship with u.s he stands away. fortunately rouhani is a proactive man and doesnt wait for others to make decisions for him. like your country, two big parties(wings in iran) exist and try to cope with one another. i think we both nations can help moderate governers by keeping in touch and trying to relate peacefully

During the China civil war, Mao Zhe-Dong went to a meeting in Chongqing for peace talk with then president Chinag Kai-Shek. While Mao Zhe-Dong chanted "Long-live president Chiang" with others, the PLA did not hold its fire. Instead, they attacked the National Revolutionary Army more fiercely than ever. Guess what? The peace talk was staged by "wise" Americans of America. Democrats have a long history of failure in choosing sides in international diplomatic issues.

    Actions are louder than Words.
In case of IRAN and Syria it seems that West has more interest in Words for the price of People's lives.
If Rouhani is a " Reformist " ( in Islamic terms ! ) , he better begin it in IRAN by giving Iranians their personal freedom and rights of privacy instead of harassing women and youths in streets for their cloths or hairstyle and stop " Fashion Policing ".
Give a free internet to people and stop persecute Internet users. Stop Persecute Baha'i s and Christians and other religion believers. Free Political Prisoners and Stop the massacre of Iranian Opposition members in IRAQ.

As in the past with Hitler and Saddam and Qaddafi and all the ruthless dictators, the policy of appeasement would bring a painful disappointment to Civilized world and destruction to peoples living in dictatorships.

All i see is a bigger reason to attack. Its a clear sign of a "ploy" to try get nuclear weapons using this non Radical guy to try get the bombs. Its well known that most people in Iran want nuclear weapons, the religion radical ruler / leader is just using this guy, & the second they get nuclear weapons, is the second his party is gone "for good".

The second they get them is the second the world is at risk of nuclear war, as Israel will see a 500% jump+++ in attacks after Iran gets nuclear bombs. Israel doesn't play around, and if attacked hard, they will do anything to defand them self's / survive.

Even if Iran did wipe out Israel "land", Israel has subs packed with nuclear weapons out at sea all around Iran. As soon as that happens, them sub's will start returning nuclear bombs.

This is a Hltler's book "my kampf". We have all herd them say they will wipe them out with nuclear weapons, in a rage. They are radical and that's a big no no." WAR WAR WAR, IF THEY DON'T BACK DOWN".

Not that i believe the bible, but i think it even says the world will end in that areas.

Ether way radical is all we need to see, to know we must act no matter what.

Why to stop being attacked. I believe it was Muslims / Turkey or Egypt, that told them to settle there. what happened later??

Some states and country's around them tried to murder / kill them all, but Israel took them on and just won.

Israel does do wrong things, but this is about the "world", not Israel. We are talking about letting nuts that area radical, get nuclear bombs. After all there statements, its clear no people like them should ever get nuclear bombs "no matter what" at any cost. Then the fact they run mass terrorist groups, that are not all targeting Israel.

They are like Nazi's, and letting them get nuclear bombs after all we no, is no different from Adolf Hitler writing a book, about his plans are, and what he is going to do, come to power in 2013. There radical and have told us all what there plans are, and what they will do with nuclear weapons.

We will act 100% to stop them. NK is not even radical like them, and its a disaster.

They don't have to think about it for 1 second "about letting them get them or not". Iran has already told there store to all of us, or there book "my kampf". We know all there is to know about these "radical" people, that the hi up people say there going to wipe Israel off the map, and will use nuclear weapons. Nothing to think about, only to plan a attack on them nuclear sites if talks fail.

You have to be on drugs if you think for 1 second giving a country that supports and funds mass terrorist groups, & are radical, having nuclear weapons is OK. & the fact they told us what there going to do.

It is difficult to trust any Moslem at this point in time, since every heinous act on earth are the types of actions they prefer to take credit for, whether they did or not. The brutality of the very nature of the religion to control human nature through terror convinces me that they are liars that manipulate for world domination, not for the sake of bettering the world, but for their own egos. The standard of living in their own countries is disgraceful, with only small pockets of citizens enjoying a better life, while the mast majority suffers - so much for compassion. For me, the lie continues, especially when I read the last quote "I have said before that I am not a historian, and that when it comes to speaking of the dimensions of the Holocaust it is the historians that should reflect on it," - if this is not smooth-over white wash for genocide, I don't know what is. This man saying he is not a historian is like me looking through my own window and saying I don't know if there is any furniture there, but I'm sure my friends do and can tell you more about it than I can. For a newly formed religious belief (638 A.D.) that created itself from both the old and new bilble testaments, with a big dose of Muhhammed Allah twist in jihad, I stand vigilant watch of Islam, but not so much that I live in the terror they love spreading, because I know who is greater than evil. And we all know terror is evil and does not come from the one who is greater than evil.

Everyone knows insanity is the act of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We have tried threats of war and sanctions against Iran for years and it has changed nothing. Now we have an opportunity to sit down and have a diplomatic discussion with their new President and we would instead choose to continue doing the same thing? That is insane.

Let's give this a chance and see where it goes. I am sure Iranians would rather have peace and I know I would – so tired of the wars and death.

It's really amazing to see some Americans(?) still have fantasies about Iran and their nuclear program. For Iran, or any small country, a nuclear weapon is the only way to protect itself from being manipulated or interfered by other countries. I believe Iran will get its own nuclear bomb eventually, the question is when. All you Americans can do is to postpone it as long as possible, not to accelerate it.

Iran has not proved itself to be stable or mature enough to have a bomb. The United States has been in countless wars since WW2 and has not used, or threatened to use, a bomb. Neither has any of the countries that are currently nuclear powers. I am afraid that with leaders like Ahmadinejad and some of the more fanatical religious leaders, Iran has not proved itself to stable and mature politically. I do think the people of Iran are ready for peace, but I don't trust the leaders.

Go out and make an Iranian friend. Learn about the people and culture. Watch the terrible video of Neda dying at the hands of her own government. The Iranian people are good people and they want peace and prosperity JUST LIKE AMERICANS. Although as an American I can say there are still many of us who love war as long as it is not on our soil because it makes them feel good about themselves, like they are tough hombres. But you are not. Only cowards choose war over peace.

ed, do u know what r u saying?
1-pakistan encourages terrorists in afghanistan, not iran. afghan terrorists hate iran because of religious differences. taliban is both iran's and america's enemy, iran has no interests in changing afghanistan political scene
2-u sent soldiers half the world to afghanistan, neighboring iran, to kill bin ladin, and of course ACCIDENTALLY< INEVITABLE AND UNAVOIDABLE,killed thousands of poor afghans. it simply raised terrorism in afghan people, who have been victims of u.a.e and k.s.a "wahhabi" missioneries till u invaded their country.
3- of course u, as other redneck dumbs have a simple answer: we r good and u r bad, so we have right whaever we do and whoever we kill. really ed chase, tell me, is ed chase a nicname for g.w.bush?

ehasan, I have an Idian family, a black family and a Jewish family as neighbors and we all get along. I don't care what they believe in and they don't care what I believe in. Our kids play together, we share tools, we cook and share food on holidays. If my family went to a Muslim country, we would be killed because we don't believe in the Koran. That is terror and its that reason that its has become a war. Islam vs everyone else..

I can't understand why political and religious leaders can't confront the monstrous crimes the Spaniards committed against the Indians of America, Caribbean Islands and Africa. The leaders go as far as the holocaust. The Spaniards killed 100+million Indians and Africans after invading, raping, torturing and dismembering them. The leaders of Germany apologize every year for the Genocide against the Jews. But the leaders of Spain have never apologize for their horrible crimes against the Indians and Blacks. Should not those crimes be condemn?, specially When their survivors today still suffer poverty and ignorance hence they became slaves for nearly two centuries?. And should not the Spaniards apologize every year instead of celebrating as if they had done a great deed to humanity? When there is a willingness to achieve peace, as the leader of Iran is doing, there is nothing to lose. We know how to be on guard and if Rouhani is not honest we will know on time.

When we are close to a turning point, specially in policies, many who can not realize the situations as is, usually present not worthy comments. The fact is that many have hope for a better life in mutual relations. Starting is starting, so those who have good wills always welcome new ideas and try to provide a better understanding and respect between civilizations and cultures. So we should try to hint toward peace, respect and friendship. Best Regards Saeid

Here is a thread of typical comments on a political issue that is more important then some of us choose to believe. There's the negative, there's the positive, and then there's the stupidity that never seizes to amaze me. For those who looked at this in a positive light, i commend you because I know the hope this has given many people. Even if this hope is just planted or a "Test" it is still a step somewhere and sometimes thats all we need to relieve our hearts. Seriously, for those of you whether Iranian, American, or both, who have looked and ridiculed this as being something negative, good luck in life because your negativity is weakness and a way of setting yourself up for disappointment. Life is about decisions and what you decide gets you where you are. Keep an open mind and an open heart, and even if there is disappointment in the end, just know that you have done yourself and the world good just by being positive. For the rest who literally rambled something in hopes of getting people's blood boiling, i am sorry you are uneducated. No one can help you but you can help yourself by doing research, opening up the mind, and doing some soul searching.

Why is there so much support for Israel, talk about sheep in wolves clothing. He makes a very good point, why do German atrocities committed equate to Palestinian people being displaced by the millions? Mr. Abraham (LOL), goes on to slam a clear olive branch by Iran, the exact tactics used by Israel. They put countries in a position to lose the "media influence", that is of course controlled by Jews, Newscorp and Murdochs open declaration of Zionism intent is one major example, etc.

They know very well Iran is not going to nuke Israel. That would be the sure fire way for Irans government to be ENDED in an instant, they know that, everyone knows that. So Israel keeps engaging in the politics of fear, on AMERICANS, and guess what IT WORKS. Every Jewish written opinion piece needs to have the star of david at the bottom or top, or both of any article posted as "news" and "factual" not twisted, manipulative, and with an agenda that purposely omits relavent facts.

What a great era we live in. We saw the wall fall between East Berlin and West Berlin and this could be the start of something as meaningful. What I find interesting is that it is not the common people of a country that has ill feelings for those of another country. It is the leaders that wish to hate, make war as well as sacrifice people and resources. Power or money, money or power,,,, it means nothing if we are dead. I hope we can all live together.

Rouhani played to his third-world Islamic revolutionary roots while trying, only occasionally, to borrow the language of Mohammad Khatami, without any of the former president’s intellectual and emotional sincerity. An easy victory awaited Rouhani in New York: just a little confession about past nuclear deception, just a bit of give on Iran’s “industrial-scale” enrichment. But no give at all.

In my opinion, the United States has not been very successful in its recent two ventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have killed more people in those countries than whom we rescued them from. Also, our economy is not doing so well and thou we still like to say that the use of Military force is an option, it really is only a last option ( Syria is a clear example).
Also, it took Iran quite a while to get rid of its own George Bush, by this I mean Ahmadinejad. Now, we have two Presidents that speak the same language. The only question now for both leaders is how to get the approval of the right wing conservatives in their own nations? both in the US and Iran. How can president Obama convince 34 years of ill actions by Iran against the US? How will he make friends with the only Nation ever to attack its embassy and taking its staff as hostages for 444 days? How can they forget about operation Eagle Claws and the embarrassment it left behind? and many more... also on the Iranian side, how will Rohani convince the right to forget about the Coup de tar against a democratic government of Dr Mosadegh and the re-installation of the Shah? What will he tell them about the US Navy shooting down a passenger plane and killing all aboard on the Persian Gulf? What will he tell them about the US support for Iraq and actively killing Iranian soldiers in the last days of the Iran-Iraq war?
Now to add to all the problems is the Israel Government who will have APAC making sure that the Jewish state is looked after before the interest of the US in many ways. Even the Arab neighbors of Iran are scared of such friendship since they well know that with such a friendship their biggest customer will have a new supplier. Iran is a very powerful nation and its main wealth is its youth and level of education available to them. A nation with 60% aged 34 or less. No country in the region, even with equal amount of natural resources can match that. Lest not forget that Iran is second reserve holder of natural crude oil among OPEC nations and recently been calculated to have the most natural gas even more than Russia. Add to that Copper(worlds second), Iron Ore, and yes, Uranium.
Now just imagine that US companies may enter into a country that has not been developed well enough due to lack of modern technology or sanctions or simply paying ten fold for such needs in the black market for the past 34 years.
I as an American-Iranian would like to see this friendship mature into something more meaningful. May the will exist to bring ever lasting peace to both nations.

You have to sufficiently loyal to the Islamic system and to the "supreme" leader to even be allowed to stand as president of Iran, hence why only a handful of candidates pass the Islamic Guardians vetting process. Thousands of even islamic candidates don't pass. So, in this sham democratic process, this guy Rouhani passed the test.
Yes, ofcourse it is true that he is not as extreme as somebody like previous president Ahmadinejad. However he and Ahmadinejad have the exact same goals – to promote and flourish the Islamic regime – but their methods are different!
We in Iran don't fall for the lies and false words of any of the regimes candidates and men. They are basically all from the same cloth. Regards.

    What's up?

I found this article very interesting...please read!

Do you remember the blockbuster hit film The Matrix that was released in 1999? You may not know this, but it has deep spiritual implications concerning the times we are living in and Bible prophecy.

It tells a story of how these "agents" are trying to turn us into machines. We are closer then ever before for this to become a reality when they cause us to receive an implantable microchip in our body during a time when physical money will be no more.

You may have seen on NBC news concerning the implantable RFID microchip that some people are getting put in their hand to make purchases, but did you know this microchip matches perfectly with prophecy in the Bible?

"He (the false prophet who deceives many by his miracles) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name...

You also may have heard of the legendary number "666" that people have been speculating for possibly thousands of years on what it actually means. This article shares something I haven't seen before, and I don't think there could be any better explanation for what it means to calculate 666. This is no hoax. Very fascinating stuff!

...Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666" (Revelation 13:16-18 NKJV).

To see all the details showing why the Bible foretold of all these things, check out this article!

GOD is sending out His end time warning:

"Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, 'If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name'" (Revelation 14:9-11).

In the Islamic religion they have man called the Mahdi who is known as their messiah of whom they are waiting to take the stage. There are many testimonies from people online who believe this man will be Barack Obama who is to be the biblical Antichrist based off dreams they have received. I myself have had strange dreams about him like no other person. So much so that I decided to share this information.

He came on stage claiming to be a Christian with no affiliation to the Muslim faith...

"In our lives, Michelle and I have been strengthened by our Christian faith. But there have been times where my faith has been questioned - by people who don't know me - or they've said that I adhere to a different religion, as if that were somehow a bad thing," – Barack Obama

...but was later revealed by his own family members that he indeed is a devout Muslim.

So what's in the name? The meaning of someones name can say a lot about a person. God throughout history has given names to people that have a specific meaning tied to their lives. How about the name Barack Obama? Let us take a look at what may be hiding beneath the surface...

"And He (Jesus) said to them (His disciples), 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven'" (Luke 10:18).

In the Hebrew language we can uncover the meaning behind the name Barack Obama.

Barack, also transliterated as Baraq, in Hebrew is: lightning

    baraq – Biblical definition:

From Strongs H1299; lightning; by analogy a gleam; concretely a flashing sword: – bright, glitter (-ing, sword), lightning. (Strongs Hebrew word H1300 baraq baw-rawk')

Barak 'O'bamah, The use of bamah is used to refer to the "heights" of Heaven.

    bamah – Biblical definition:

From an unused root (meaning to be high); an elevation: – height, high place, wave. (Strongs Hebrew word H1116 bamah baw-maw')

The day following the election of Barack Obama (11/04/08), the winning pick 3 lotto numbers in Illinois (Obama's home state) for 11/5/08 were 666.

Obama was a U.S. senator for Illinois, and his zip code was 60606.

Seek Jesus while He may be found...repent, confess and forsake your sins and trust in the savior! Jesus says we must be born again by His Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God...God bless!
