Iran's new president: Yes, the Holocaust happened

September 25th, 2013
10:06 AM ET

Editor's note: This is an excerpt from Christiane Amanpour's full interview with President Hassan Rouhani, which will air at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday on CNN International.

By Josh Levs and Mick Krever, CNN

Iran's new president has acknowledged the Holocaust, furthering the stark contrast between himself and his predecessor.

"Any crime that happens in history against humanity, including the crime the Nazis committed towards the Jews as well as non-Jews, was reprehensible and condemnable," President Hassan Rouhani said in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

"Whatever criminality they committed against the Jews we condemn. The taking of human life is contemptible. It makes no difference whether that life is a Jewish life, Christian or Muslim."

He followed with an apparent reference to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying it's not acceptable to "usurp the land of another group and occupy it." He called for "an even-handed discussion."

Rouhani also emphasized that he is "not a historian."

The Anti-Defamation League responded quickly.

"It is about time an Iranian leader acknowledged the Holocaust as a tragic fact of history," ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said in a written statement.

"But in practically the same breath President Rouhani engaged in the more subtle form of Holocaust revisionism, minimizing it by accusing the Jewish survivors of taking vengeance on the Palestinians in fulfilling their 2,000-year-old dream of returning to their homeland, Israel. This was a gratuitous swipe at the survivors.

"There is no moral equivalency between the slaughter of 6 million Jews and millions of other innocent men, women and children in the Nazi gas chambers and the plight of the Palestinian people living in the West Bank and Gaza. The Iranians, apparently, are willing to come only so far."

Days earlier, in an interview with NBC, Rouhani declined to say whether the Holocaust happened.

The country's previous president, the firebrand Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, infamously denied the Holocaust, calling it a "myth."

Rouhani, widely considered more moderate, has struck a positive tone and reached out to the West to improve relations, particularly with the United States.

"I would like to say to American people: I bring peace and friendship from Iranians to Americans," he said in English, marking the first time he's spoken the language in a TV interview since becoming president. For the rest of the interview Rouhani spoke Farsi.

In many ways, Rouhani is the "it" man of this week's U.N. General Assembly, as Western leaders look to gauge whether his diplomatic overtures will translate into concrete policy changes.

There was widespread speculation that he and U.S. President Barack Obama might meet face-to-face.

"There were some talks about" a possible meeting, Rouhani told Amanpour through a translator. "And preparation for the work was done a bit as well."

But no such meeting happened.

Two senior U.S. administration officials told CNN Tuesday that the encounter was called off because it was considered "too complicated" for Iran back home.

"I believe we didn't have sufficient time to really coordinate the meeting to the full extent that we needed to," Rouhani told CNN.

Still, the two men recently exchanged letters, and Rouhani said the ice is "already beginning to break because the environment is changing and that has come about as a result of the will of the people of Iran to create a new era of relations between the people of Iran and the rest of the world."

There is sufficient time to coordinate a meeting, he said.

Rouhani said he has full permission from Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to negotiate with the West.

"I think that the president of Iran has the authority whenever the national interest of the country is involved," Rouhani told Amanpour. "The supreme leader of Iran has said that should negotiations be necessary for the national interest of the country, he is in fact not opposed to it."

"Now, if an opportunity was created today, had arisen today," the Iranian president said, "and the prep work for that had been done, most probably the talks would have haven taken place, primarily focused on the nuclear issue or the developments on the Middle East. Therefore the supreme leader, I can tell you, has given permission for my government to freely negotiate on these issues."

Imagine all the cures to diseases that were not discovered because "Jews were put in their place" 70 years ago. Imagine all the literary classics that were never written because "Jews were put in their place". Imagine all the wonderful movies never produced starring the actors who were never born because "Jews were put in their place".

One day "Everyone", you or a loved one will be facing death and you will plead to a Jew and to the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to save their life. The Jew may be your Dr. or Jesus Christ Himself (you do know he was a Jew?). But if it is a Dr. and the life is spared be thankful that the Jewish Dr.'s great-grandparents weren't put in their place. .

However, we STILL have a holocaust. It is happening every day right here in the USA. It is happening right now all over the world. It's called abortion and it destroys 4000 unborn human beings EVERY SINGLE DAY. China has a one child policy-a second or third child is aborted. India aborts females JUST BECAUSE they are females.

Right on ... Not that I'm one anybody's side here – but – the British and Americans in their infinite wisdom decided that taking land from the indiginous population and giving it away to their sworn ememies seemed like a good idea. Because we felt sorry for the those poor Jews who were exterminated in Europe we had to give them a homeland and country of there own despite the fact that it made every Arab's blood boil ... the real question is if they knew then what we know now – would they still have thought it was a good idea ? Like it or not the fact remains that Isreal's existence is at the very heart of all of the conflict and strife in the Middle East and the West is solely responsible for this – and people wonder why they want to kill us all.

Blessed with a drought and enslavement in egypt, then murdering to reclaim the place which they murdered in order to obtain in the very beginning. Yes, absolutely, an innocent and blessed bunch. So marvelous and ingenious in fact that rather than invent cures for diseases and all the rest of modern science 5000 yrs ago, they waited until 2000 years after Jesus. Apparently, like the previous president of Iran you think history, unless it's your version of it. Politics took Palestine from the map on the right to the one on the left. Your picture iof things is similar to the one that says Native Americans didn't own anything. Colonialism is still colonialism no matter who spreads it. What to do with the Jews, because no one wanted them because of anti-semitism, ended up displacing other people to find them a place to call their own. It continues today, and eventually will result in the whole world killing themselves over it.

The first image in your transition is the British Mandate for Palestine – which was not ruled by, nor even the least bit tolerated by, the Palestinian Arabs. Your image implies that the current "Palestinians" owned that land in 1947 but nothing could be further from the truth. The area was owned by neither Palestenians nor Jews in the years leading up to 1947.

Actually, the original two state solution, the vote in the United Nations to partion the British Mandate of Palestine into two lands those for Palestinian Arabs and those for Palestinian Jews, Gave the West Bank, Gaza, and some other territories to the Arabs. During Israel's war for independence Jordan occupied the West Bank and eventually incorporated it into its territory. Israel did take the West Bank from Jordan in the '67 war, but no one but Israel has recognized that as a legitimate annexation of the territory.

While it is true that the current state of Israel did not exist until this century, that region was called Israel for millennia before there was a Unite Nations.

The Jews occupied the region centuries before Islam was founded.

Instead of arguing whethere the Shoah happened (my late dad was a survivor) perhaps we all need to realise that the whole world is at war. yes indeed, and if humanity would have learned their lesson 79 years ago-there would not have been anymore genocide commited. Time to get real people. Lets focus on water instead of oil, and food instead of gold.

I would say you are going too far in calling it a lie. Yes, the Jordanians were in possession of the West Bank before they lost it to Israel in the 1967 war. But the predominant nationality of the people living there is Palestinian. If Woodrow Wilson's principle of national self-determination means anything, there should be a Palestinian state in the West Bank. Israel is in their right occupy the land until they can reach an agreement with the Palestinians that meets their requirements for security, because peace cannot be a unilateral withdrawal. But the land is not owned by Israel. They certainly aren't giving the residents of the West Bank the right to vote in Israeli elections, are they? So the Israelis themselves don't view the West Bank as part of Israel. And most of them would rather be free of the obligation of overseeing the territory.

Israel didn't exist until 1948 and Jordan didn't exist until 1946. Both countries were created by the victors of the Second World War. The Palestinians had occupied that land for centuries. Nobody is saying that there was a Palestinian state recognized under international law. However, I am saying that, to imply that the Palestinians have less of a right to those lands than the Israelis do, is ridiculous.

The land that is now Israel has been called many names over the years. Prior to WWI. It was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans sided with Germany. They lost. Much of the Ottoman Empire was split up going to England. England Carved up those lands into Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Turkey. After WWII Israel was created. Only after the USA in 1948 ( believe) did Israel exist again. The land that is now Israel was not well populated except for the holy sites. Saying that Palestinian lands were a lie is false. In the last few centuries Palestinian was around before Israel. There is a few thousand year gap in Israel's existence.

"Palestine" it was only ever referred to as a region. It has never been a country of its own, and has never had any culture associated with it. The term comes from what the Romans called "Falastin" meaning philistines. The term philistine in its literal translation means "invaders".

I think you mix two things, Palestine did not exist as sovereign state,( actually even Jordan did not until Ottoman collapse) but Palestinians just like Jews had certain rights toward the land upon which they lived. Although I do not support statehood for Palestinians (there are enough Arab states and they should join up with Jordan or perhaps even Israel to be a viable prosperous nation) It is absurd to say their lands were not taken away from them unfairly. Denying that is like denying Holocaust. Much of their land was taken from them by force.

This is another instance of prejudice and a political agenda blinding the intellect. Since the expulsion of the Jews by the Romans, the land of Palestine belong to people whose descendents are the Palestinians. States such as the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Caliphate, the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Ottoman Empire, the British Mandate and Jordan were overlords, states that had political control over territory. What the Zionists are doing is progessively stealing private land. This violates basic civilized norms as well as a host of United Nations resolutions. If what the Zionist are doing would become a universal princiiple, there would be war and injustice throught the world with different peoples stealing other peoples land based on realities that ended humdred of years ago or on religion grounds devoid of reason.

The Jews have a historical & God given right to the land as it was promised them in the Bible but the Dispora due to their turning their backs on God caused them to lose it on a temporary basis, God does not break His promises. Your are right the land was really part of TransJordan when the British decided that the best thing to do was to give the land to the Jewish people. Of course this caused heartburn with the people who had settled there, the Palestinians. Instead o fthe two peoples working something out we see the end result decades of terror & war. But God's promised was kept, the Isrealites are back in their Promised Land.

International law does not recognise Israel's continued occupation of lands seized from Jordan, Egypt and Syria. To say that it does is a blatant lie. You can call them Jordanians, Palestinians or Arabs – it doesn't matter. Though I always endeavour to call people by the name they call themselves. It's just good manners. You have no legitimate claim to their land. Get out.

The Zionist logic is they have blank check because of the Holocaust, so they will take the land that is not their's, commit ethnic cleansing and establish the State of Israel.

Why did they not expropriate part of Germany in order to create Israel instead of inflicting atrocities and expelling natives of Palestine.

You have to remember one thing, injustice can go only so far. Sooner or later there is a payback and I would not like to be one of the oppressors when that time comes.

Being a Brit I have always admired our neighbours to the north as strong, decent, fair minded and courageous people. Where the hell did you come from.
The Palestinians lived in comparative peace for thousands of years in PALESTINE, until in 1947 someone said to these humble people who wanted nothing more than to continue living as they always have "move over we are going to take your homeland and give a large chunk of it to the Jews who have been displaced from European countries by WWII"
No one ASKED the Palestinians if they minded they just shoved them aside.
Contrary to your delusion the UN had NO RIGHT to do this and it is NOT LEGAL. For many reasons the Jews abandoned their traditional land thousands of years ago, how long should they be able to CLAIM these lands as theirs?
The Palestinians have been thrown on the garbage heap of the world, no one cares but the Palestinians CARE, WOULDN'T YOU

I agree. It's a step. It's also important to note that yes, 6 million Jews were slaughtered in Nazi death camps, alongside another 6 million people who were NOT Jewish. To only decry the deaths of the Jews is to forgive them for the other half of their crime. 12 million people were slaughtered. Half of them were Jewish. The other half were a mix of everything else they didn't like. Gypsy, Gay, mentally handicapped, Freemasons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviets, people with dark skin...

Jews made up the bulk of the deaths.. that is why it seems to be presented as a "jewish issue".. but we jews do not for the most part forget that others died as well..

You completely typify the thoughts of a racist when you use definitions like "these people". Everyone knows that for the past three decades our diplomatic relations with Iran has been strained. Any movement toward peace is a positive step, and I don't think anyone is ignorant enough to just accept the few words spoken by the new Iranian president as a reason to open the gates and let our guard down. If you had taken the time to listen to President Obama yesterday as he addressed to UN, he said just that. We do live in the greatest Country in the world without a doubt, but you better believe there are people around the world that have spoken the very words you used to describe us. You are right that he should not be trusted outright. You should know something about him though.. he will accomplish his goals by any means necessary. That cuts both ways.
If the best path is negotiation with the west, and that works, he will do it.
If the only path left is to work with Al Queda or whomever else (actually they hate the Taliban but other than that..), then he has no qualms about doing that either.
He is, above all else, a pragmatist. The Iranians have plenty of reasons not to trust us either. We can go all the way back to operation TP Ajax, which is why it was *very* significant that Obama said we were not seeking regime change in Iran (in short TP Ajax did exactly that). We can look more recently when Iran came to the table directly with our diplomats, in secret, and freely provided intel on the Taliban including maps of where they had significant forces, etc. They asked us how they could assist in getting rid of the Taliban and were very up front about. A couple months later GW listed them as an Axis of Evil. Next meeting they told our diplomat "you basically screwed us back home.. we're done".
so trust needs to be built back up on both sides based both on a history going back 60 years and more recently – and yes, that means they have done plenty of things to make us distrust them as well. *neither* side is completely innocent or has moral superiority.

I was 14 and living in Saudi Arabia, and within days after the hostages were taken, the Saudi kids whom I had played soccer with for over a year suddenly started coming after me with rocks instead of smiles. Peace to them is on their conditions only. Trusting them should be conditional on their behavior, not their rhetoric. It's a positive sign, but until Iran stops funding international terrorism and begins to actively stop it, nothing has changed.

The Persians were civilized back centuries before there was a Christian Europe or even a place with highways. The Arabs were tribal and come from the same stock as the Jews, each with its own tribe. Both became nations in the 20th century.

"Never trust an Arab"? You could just as easily say never trust an Israeli, or a Russian, or a whatever. That's a silly generalization.

I agree with the "Trust but Verify" plan of action. Its great that Iran's latest president is sounding so reasonable. I think the US should react with cautious optimism and then let's see where this goes. I do NOT believe that we should be following an Israeli dominated foreign policy in the Middle East. I heard the stories of a survivor reluctant to tell them, so shy she might never have left her house without a strong will to go about her business in America. The tattoo on her arm I only saw by accident. The way she mourned even normal deaths of people in their nineties told me that every surviving relative was precious to her even though she'd lost most of them when they were young, sometimes only children, by the deliberate murder of the Hitler regime. Nobody needed to tell me there was a Holocaust – I saw its effects – nor have I ever visited a museum dedicated to its memory, unless you count the Anne Frank house. No, I got it straight from a survivor. And as a victim of a violent crime myself, I know mine and mine know me.

The media is stuck on "If" and not the premise of his argument, why foreign people who had nothing to do with the millions killed should be punished.

Maybe we should investigate how the Zionists let 1000s of Jews die in the Holocaust so they can advance their "statehood" movement.

My grandfather actually served in WW2 and witnessed the holocaust for himself. He was a commanding officer of the unit that shut down one of the chambers used to do the deed.
I had someone who saw with his own eyes what happened and do not need a book to tell me what happened.

Social Media and it's access through smart phones is changing the world. Middle eastern childern who are 9 and 10 years old right now, see how the rest of the world lives and they not going to tolerate that kind of control once they are old enough to have a voice.... The land was bought by the Jews from the Arabs in the late 1800's early 1900's. If the French/British would of have honored their bargain with the Arabs for helping them defeat the Ottoman Turks in WW1 we would not be in this mess today.

The Palestinians have been kicked out of every Arab country in the Middle East. They never had a homeland. Why is that no other country is willing to give up some land for the Palestinians?

Americans say the iranians cannot be trusted... however in modern History it only shows that Iran has every reason in the worl not to Trust America.... America are the ones who ousted their elected leader and put the Shah in Power just for our own greed for oil.... as a result the shah was ousted by the iranian people, and this Islamic Regime came into power. We sold Iraq weapons to kill millions of iranians, then turned around and sold them some too..... we complain about the hostage crisis... yet all they wanted was for us to return the shah to face trial for the crimes he committed against the people of Iran, we did not give up the shah which in turn made the iranians hold our embassy employees hostage for over a year!! Please read some history people, and you will get a much needed reality check of who is not to trust who based on modern history.

Most of what you said is true. There are just a few things to consider: 1) While the US did allow the Shah entry because of his cancer, we also strongly encouraged him to leave Iran in the first place rather than see what is currently happening in Syria take place there, 2) the take over of the embassy by semi-official militias should have been predicted by the CIA, 3) US Marines should have defended the embassy, they could easily have done so, 4) Reagan negotiated with Iran through back channels to delay the release of the hostages in order to win the presidential election.

Admitting that one of the worst disasters of the 20th century did occur, especially to an age old enemy, is a step in the right direction as far as public relations go. Softening it's hardline stance will allow Iran to eventually return to the world community. No longer a pariah, but now a contributor to the common good.

As to WHO owns WHAT land -
It is a generally recognized fact of life dating from the earliest times that a given land belongs to he who can successfully defend it from others who would have it - That is NOT exactly pretty, but THAT is the way it IS ! !
To acquire new lands, one takes what he can from whomever might already be there. . That is NOT stealing, but simply the victor taking his spoils. . It also reflects what the verb, "to possess" means : Possession is an ACTIVE state, NOT a passive one.
The world maps reflect how this principle has played out over the millenia and the centuries..

The real problem with Iran has nothing to do with bombs. Iran started the Iranian oil bourse to sell oil in other currencies and attack the demand for US dollars. What makes the American economy strong is the demand for dollars through oil commerce. If countries stop using dollars to buy oil the US will enter in a big inflation. Iran is attacking the currency. Read about the Iranian oil bourse, about petrodollars. There is a paper on the internet called "Why Iran is the next target" . Nothing to do with physical bombs. The real attack is against the commerce of oil.

"In the name of the Holocaust they have created a myth and regard it to be worthier than God, religion and the prophets."

This language targets the myth of the Holocaust, not the Holocaust itself – i.e., "myth" as "mystique", or what has been done with the Holocaust.

Actions upon your words sets a forever imprint in the eyes of humanity and the very global community in which you live. I am ashamed that the Iranian President fails to see the reality in Israel. Israel is the safest place to live for a Jew, Muslim or Christian in the entire Middle East. Anyone who denounces its right to exist is basically anti-humanity. There are over 1.5 million Arabs, hundreds of thousands of Christians, and 6 million Jews living peacefully together in Israel. People in Israel don't bomb each other's religious sites. There is no cultural war within the country. The government has been stable since its inception in 1948. Perhaps surrounding countries could learn a thing or two from Israel on how to govern a successful and peaceful society.

I consider myself a Zionist. I am emphatic in my support of Israel's right to exist. However, I'm not blind to the injustice visited upon Arabs by Israel in the West Bank, nor should we accept the economic inequities between Jewish and Arab communities in the rest of Israel. The wall must move so that it does not divide Arab residences from their lands. Settlements must stop. None of this will bring peace, but it is still the right thing to do.
It is said that if Arabs lay down their guns there will be peace, but if Israelis lay down their guns there will be no Israel. I believe that to be true. I cannot see how that justifies what Israel does to dehumanize Arabs on the West Bank. Notice, I said nothing of Gaza. Hamas created that mess. No one else.

We should sit down and go through the process of feeling each other out to determine if an agreement can be worked on nukes.Since we have them, and many other countries, how do you ask a country with out them to give up the nukes or the process they are in to get them? If not for the threat of nukes we probably could not count the dead from wars since 1945. I feel that it would clear up how murderous wars are if everyone had them and the way to deliver them. That in a nutshell is why so many nations are hell bent to obtain them. As much as we are afraid of them, they have served the purpose of preventing another Hiroshima . How long do you think it would take the nuts who engineered the shopping mall shooting in Kenya to use them if they had them? This is where the most danger lies now.

Part of the narrative of Israel is that it's populated by Jews who returned from exile over the last three centuries. While that's PART of the story, there is another part to it. When the Ashkenazi Jews began returning, they were welcomed by SephardicJews who had never left. The Jews from Europe were wealthier and lighter skinned than the local Jews and so, they invented a story that ignored their dark skinned cousins and placed themselves at the top of the social order. Stupid racism has covered over the fact that Jews have lived in Israel continuously for well over 3000 years (we could get into a semantics debate about the Babylonian exile and the Sammaratins, so let's keep it safe and say 2600 years). They were barred from living in Jerusalem for many decades by the Romans, but have lived there continuously since the end of the crusades.

My guess is the semi-educated Iranians know the truth but can't say much. Hopefully this guy has so much visibility and press coverage that the Iranian bosses won't dare take him out but then the Iranian bosses are about one step up the food chain from the North Koreans. As for now, let's be optimistic.

I wonder if he can be trusted. His supreme leader has approved him to talk to the west. His supreme leader could approve him to say anything at all to get what they want. Their religion controls the politics of the country. In America, it was decided long ago that religion or lack of religion will not rule the government and the government will not rule religion or a lack of religion. Saying what we want to hear could be a stalling technique. But I do not know the man personally.

I welcome Rouhani's remarks and hope that, over time, the U.S. and Israel can establish friendlier ties with Iran. It's ironic that most all Muslim lead countries with governments that are friendly to the U.S. have majority populations that hate the U.S. while the Iranian government and its people are the exact opposite. Still, I do question exactly what Rouhani said concerning the holocaust. In my mind, he did not acknowledge the Holocaust. What he said was that if there was a crime committed, then he condemns it. If?

There are millions of Muslims in this world who are just as peaceful and responsible as millions of Christians and Jews. Good Christians and Jews do not tend to take to the public arena and speak out on behalf of peace and goodwill, just like good Muslims tend not to. While I may be agnostic, what this world needs is good people of all faiths and beliefs to come together in more public arenas, link arms, and publicly declare that we all need to work together peacefully for our common good.

Adolf Hitler himself acknowledged that the Holocaust happened.

I am quoting from his final testament:
"I have also made it quite plain that, if the nations of Europe are again to be regarded as mere shares to be bought and sold by these international conspirators in money and finance, then that race, Jewry, which is the real criminal of this murderous struggle, will be saddled with the responsibility. I further left no one in doubt that this time not only would millions of children of Europe's Aryan peoples die of hunger, not only would millions of grown men suffer death, and not only hundreds of thousands of women and children be burnt and bombed to death in the towns, without the real criminal having to atone for this guilt, even if by more humane means. "

This it is clear that Hitler ordered the Holocaust and he thought that gassing was a "Human" approach.

In Hitler's warped mind, the Jewish financiers backed England to fight even when it was down and the Jewish Financiers helped the Red army turn the tide against the Wehrmacht.

In any case no bloody fool can deny the Holocaust. Volumes of evidence is enough to build a mountain.

Just a short history of Iran/US over the past 60 years should reveal to anyone who can read and research that the US and Iran people have been repeatedly deceived by their own governments and agents – BIG TIME! Based on what I read it seems to me that Rouhani stated that if any criminality happened during WWII then he would have opposed that. Passages in the Koran doesn't CONDEMN killing Jews so it evidently doesn't see killing Jews as a criminal act. Rouhani is a man of the cloth so it seems that he would embrace the teachings of the Quran (I'm referring to the book translated by "Yusuf Ali". I like Amanpour but I bet that she didn't bring up those passages.

The reason is that they believe they can win a war with Iran. People don't value peace if they think war benefits them more, and Israel has the second largest tank army in the world (after the US) and a larger air force than France. It is burning a hole in their pocket. They probably could get Iran pretty bloodied, but even the US would exhaust its wealth trying to subdue a nation of 60 million people.

Still doesn't change the need for Israel to become a completely secular state with a clean separation of religion and government. There still is not. I also get uncomfortable with people saying "this event happened..." without having actually been there. Either say what you experienced or give your opinion on where the evidence falls. Don't make proclamations of the past for which you were not a witness. That is more in-line with religion than reason, and as we all know: Iran has enough religion influencing its society and government.

The Iranian President did not say that the holocaust happened, he dodged the question, saying that its best left to historians to decide if it happened or not. This leaves open the possible claim by Iranian historians that it did not happen. While at the same time The Iranian president said "If" it happened then....... And that If he stuck in the sentence was an important 'If" It means its a hypothetical situation, and the holocaust may not have occurred in his opinion, if Iranian Historians or Historians backed by the supreme leader of Iran determine that the holocaust did not occur. His statements were artfully deceptive and meant to hide their true opinion.

You will take note that he always replied in Hypotheticals, "If" "Whatever may have" This is not accepting that the holocaust happened, this is treating the holocaust as something that is undetermined and possibly false claim.

This man is smiling through his hatred, and extending a hand to shake, while gripping a poisoned dagger behind his back that he means to stab us with.

The other thing I wish these discussions would include: a mention of Russia's role in all this. The 5-7 million number actually comes from contemporaneous newspaper accounts of how many Jews were "at risk" during Russian oppression. The Russians started the killing. The Jews (and Gypsies, for that matter) fled west, only to get similar or worse treatment after having settled in ghettos. Go watch Fiddler on the Roof if you need a refresher. To make things worse, the Russians took control of several of the concentration camps prior to the allies getting there. They may have treated some of those inside just as bad as the Nazis had. Not mentioning Russia's role helps fuel neo-Nazi erroneous sentiment that the 5-7 million number is a myth that began prior to Hitler even coming to power, and that it simply took years for the US and Britain to finally be duped into it... finally using the Nazis as the boogeyman. That's a mischaracterization of the original newspaper stories and the eyewitness accounts, though.

Good point, Amir, but if you read between the lines, while he admits something happened he doesn't acknowledge what happened – "Whatever criminality they committed against the Jews we condemn." This is a blanket statement which coupled with the statement that he is "not a historian" only further evidences that he does not acknowledge to any degree what happened.

Whether or not Israel should exist, the reason for the never-ending-dialogue about the holocaust is that Israel is certainly in a precarious position, and Iran is a nation that has threatened to help push the Jews of Israel into the sea.

And he does it with impunity. There's a video of him online gloating of how he controls American politics towards Israel.

To say the land belongs to jews because they have been there since Moses would cast many lands to other people. Should we remove all people from the U.S. and return it to the Indians. No I have to agree the UN resolution that recreated Israel was a mistake. Had the USSR not been in that region I doubt seriously Israel would have ever developed. Israel was conquered many years before and was non existent for centuries. The land was called Palestine thats a fact and it was england who cut up the land that created many of the countries today. Odd how no one remembers that the jews were once considered terrorist by England.

The Jewish population was expelled from Palestine in the 2nd Centiry by the Romans. For centuries other people lived there under a succession of states: Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, the Caliphate, the Kingdom of Jeruzalem, the Ottoman Empire, the British Mandate and later, the West BAnk under Jordan. Should it become a huniversal principle that the descendents of people who once lived in a land have the right to take it from the current residents even after nearly 2000 years? Imagine the choas this would bring.

Jews were there, palestinians kicked them out, jews came back, kicked the palestinians out, and now the palestinians are trying to fight their way back in. Does that pretty much sum it up? Why not just glass the place, and then the land grab start all over again.

I understand skepticism and talk is cheap. We still need to give this new President a chance. I believe you still can get more with a carrot than a stick. We need to open up constructive discussions with Iran. Bombing them into the stone age will not solve anything over the long term . Consensus is most Israeli citizens don't want to bomb Iran. Bear in mind also Iran too has Jews who live there peacefully and practice Judaism openly. If the Iranian Gov truly hated Jews then I don't think this would be the case. Iran is not the monster portrayed by the Mainstream Media. FYI they have been reporting Iran is on the verge of acquiring a nuclear weapon for the past 29 years !! Let's give peace a chance folks . This may seem hard to believe, but Iranians and Jews used to have a good relationship before the Ayatollahs took over. Even some senior people in Israel's government were born in Iran, part of the ancient community there. The Persian king Cyrus is praised quite a bit in the Bible.

As a liberal the ADL really ticks me off sometimes. God-forbid anything is done incrementally, or even fast, but not fast enough for them. This President has made a GIANT leap for Iran in the international community. The fact that he even acknowledged the Holocaust is remarkable and shows that the Iranian leadership is really starting to respect the will of their people to be part of the International Community and live in a prosperous, peaceful country. But noooooo, the ADL has to *poop* all over this HIGHLY POSITIVE step and focus on a perceived slight. I wish people like those at the ADL would realize that they make the rest of us look just as bad as the Tea Party makes the normal Conservatives look. It is so sad that the fringe from both political parties manage to make the 90% in the middle hate each other. I for one have hope that this man can create the change that Iran's people have been waiting too long for!

It's pathetic and sad that after so many years after World War II that the "defining" memory is the so-called "Holocaust" event. For what it's worth, people should be allowed AND have a right to question and investigate the claims made about the "Holocaust" event for themselves. However, you know, in many countries, this is NOT permitted. While in this country, there is the Holocaust Promotion Lobby and the highly politicized Hollywood industry to disseminate and perpetuate the story of the six million which has had the effect of disabling critical thinking about this issue in this society. To what end? Obviously, to promote "sympathy" for Israel which in turn results in the neverending military and financial support of this country on behalf of the state of Israel at the expense of Israel's enemies. In so many words, anybody who is genuinely interested in questioning about the "Holocaust" will readily find that its indeed a myth and a scam! (Rouhani is wrong, Ahmadinejad is right.)

Name calling is NOT an argument. You know, as a starting point you should note the following as to how 6 million Jewish casualties were incurred during World War I : "The Crucifixion of Jews Must Stop!" was published in the October 31, 1919, issue of "The American Hebrew" by Martin Glynn; in it he lamented the poor conditions for European Jews after World War I. Glynn referred to these conditions as a potential "holocaust" and asserted that "six million Jewish men and women are starving across the seas". Check it out yourself...

In other words, we let in just about anyone and everyone from all over the world, including nations that support terrorism...which includes of course Saudi Arabia and Iran, and you would wonder about this Iranian President making these kinds of statements.
We know that the Boston bombers, the Tsarnaevs...were Musliim radicals, trained in their own country by terrorists, came to this nation, given welfare, free education and then to repay the kindness, they MERCILESSLY BOMBED innocent people in Boston, it could have been NY or maybe SF..could have been LA... a child was murdered, numerous people had limbs blown off...From Nidal Hassan who had ties to Islamic terrorists, to the shooter at the Naval base, who had a web site with radical Islamic ties...
Why would you believe this garbage written by someone historically who has sympathy with terrorists, of course I'm referring to Amanpour.

The land that is now the country of Israel was "owned" by GB, just as they still own the Falkland Islands, and fought to keep it, which most of us should remember. Most British colonies/protectorates were turned over to the indigenous populations (the USA fought our way out before the others, as all of you hopefully learned). We also fought Spain for ownership of Texas. Israel had a very large Jewish population before WWII. More moved there in WWII to escape the Nazis. Considering all the countries who allowed Jews to be killed by the Nazis, it was decided that a Jewish-controlled country be created, and they still fight every day to survive.

When Rouhani says "I am not a historian to judge the Holocaust"; that is simply another way to deny the genocide of the Jewish people. "He is not a historian"? Any dummy knows the Holocaust took place. It is indisputable that millions of Jews were killed in an attempt to exterminate the Jewish people. By copping out with the "I am not a historian card", Rouhani shows that he is no "moderate". He is awfully close to being a Holocaust denier and sounds just like Ahmadinejad with his parsing of words in not addressing the question. And he is bringing "friendship and peace to the American people". Does that mean that the "death to America", "death to Israel" chants will stop soon at Friday prayers? What utter nonsense. And shame on the people being fooled by the rhetoric of this man who is trying to present a false soft face to this evil, brutal regime.

There is one, tiny little Jewish country on the planet. Deal with it. Arabs already living in Israel when it was created (may) still live there, and they are Israeli citizens. As for the lands taken in wars launched by their arab neighbors, that's what happens when you lose. The Palestinian people would have home rule by now if they'd stop attacking Israel. Blowing-up innocent civilians and launching missles is not helping their cause. For those of you who hate Jews, what would you do if your neighbor kept trying to kill you? Now, consider how many living, breathing people are still alive in the palestinian territories. That's patience and tolerance for you. That's the jewish morality. We do not punish or blame others, for the actions of some. But, we will protect ourselves and our loved ones. We learned that lesson the hard way, didn't we? I hope Iran will change. I know many good people from Iran (they like to be called "Persian" – their country was called Persia before overthrown). Jews got along fine in Muslim countries until the Taliban and other sharia groups started taking over. Same goes for Christians. Radical Islamic groups need to be stopped. All radical groups need to stop for there to be peace. Who doesn't want peace, really?

He is completely correct, the allies had no right to take away Palestinian land and give it to the jews after WW2. Saying that they deserve it because they lived there 2000 years ago is stupid, if that is the case then all of the US should be given back to the Native American tribes that lived here before the europeans ever came. The only reason the allies gave Palestine to the jews was because of anti-semitism, no other country wanted them back.

Jews even got along fine in Germany until the Nazis came along. Many Jews were proud to consider themselves German and part of the great German cultural and scientific tradition. A lot of Jews had fought for Germany in the First World War. Yes, there was a lot of anti-Semitism, but it was the Nazis who whipped it up into a hate and murder campaign, just for the sake of their own political power. Not even for Germany's sake–if Germany hadn't put so much effort into persecuting the Jews, I bet they would have won the war.

They just dont like jews because of what they are doing to Palestinians . Because they are murdering people and just cant get away from it .
      Anti-Semitism is a LIE

Jews were sucking the life blood out of Germany, the same they are doing to America today. Germany responded trying to save their culture and way of life.

Do you think that Palestinians will still be going on and on and on about how they were treated by Jews for the next 70 – 80 years in the way that Jews are always going on and on and on about how they are victims?

The other night I watched Billy Crystal on Dave Letterman and found it to be offensive. I dont think there is anything funny about constant harping on how one is jewish. I am Lutheran and would never think of doing that.....come to think of it, have not seen any Catholic or Protestant comedian do that. What is so special about Israel or Jews that they cannot just be Americans?

    Buying time.
If he had just answered the question about the holocaust the first time it was asked i could put a little faith in his gestures of peace. But to not answer just goes to show that Iran still thinks the Holocaust a myth.
Doesn't matter. He's just trying to buy time and the Israelis are not falling for it. September 1980 Iran bombs Iraqi reactor. June 1981 Israel completes destruction of the same reactor. September 2007 Israel destroys Syrian reactor.
Funny how Iran was the first nation in history to bomb a nuclear reactor as a preventive attack to stop the development of a nuclear weapon but now finds itself in the same position as Iraq in the early 80's.
Israel has a history of drawing the line and backing it up. It's only a matter of time as Iran tries to buy more with empty gestures.

This is clearly pandering to public opinion. Being more moderate than a guy who was basically a nut bag would seem like a good thing, but I think the reality is that he is simply trying to gain support from the international community and the American public whilst still having the same hard line views off record. Just a wolf in sheep`s clothing

"There is no moral equivalency between the slaughter of 6 million Jews and millions of other innocent men, women and children in the Nazi gas chambers and the plight of the Palestinian people living in the West Bank and Gaza. The Iranians, apparently, are willing to come only so far."

Really ... so dead Jews count more than dead Palestinians?

well .. now we know why there will never be any resolution

""But in practically the same breath President Rouhani engaged in the more subtle form of Holocaust revisionism, minimizing it by accusing the Jewish survivors of taking vengeance on the Palestinians in fulfilling their 2,000-year-old dream of returning to their homeland, Israel."

But isn't that what Jews did in Israel?

The Holocaust was a travesty of human tyranny while many have yet to realize whom the true tyrants were as well as which other tyrants that a single family funded. This family's influence is what made the travesties under the Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Zedong regimes possible. Over 100 million people were systematically exterminated. Not mention millions more lost in armed conflict and this family still funds genocide to this day. They are the very ones responsible for every major atrocity from since the majority of modern history. Their business revolves around the very concept of money in exchange for the shedding of blood. They know who they are. They own this news network as well as all others. They are also responsible for putting most heads of state in power and for the materialistic basis of our reality because the have us worship a God called money which is a false prophet. They now how to play off our empathy to justify their means. They see humans as pawns and nothing more. They are evil incarnate. The Iranian president hopefully is willing to take a step to towards breaking this trend and hopefully other world leaders will as well along with the rest of humanity. We need to learn to stop killing one another because it only keeps us enslaved by the shackles of these tyrants. We must learn to forgive quickly and learn honestly while being kind to one another no matter what one has done. That's how we can not only fix the world but save our species from an extinction brought on by ourselves.

"As to WHO owns WHAT land –
It is a generally recognized fact of life dating from the earliest times that a given land belongs to he who can successfully defend it from others who would have it – That is NOT exactly pretty, but THAT is the way it IS ! !
To acquire new lands, one takes what he can from whomever might already be there. . That is NOT stealing, but simply the victor taking his spoils. . It also reflects what the verb, "to possess" means : Possession is an ACTIVE state, NOT a passive one.
The world maps reflect how this principle has played out over the millenia and the centuries."

This comment, as stated by one of your earlier correspondents above, would seem to accurately reflect Nazi principals.

You know something – its time we coin a word for people against Palestinians – or people who deny the 50+ years of the Palestinian plight.. Anti-Humanitarianism maybe? is that good enough. So now; every time someone tries to undermine the suffering of Palestinians – we can call it Anti-Humanitarianism – hows that? .. and to those who say it was not Palestine - why are there millions of people displaced in camps all over the arab world?

However, Netanyahu's foor soldiers are already out preparing for even harder sanctions against Iran.
US Senators Shumer, Lindsey Graham, McCain (ofcourse), Diane Fienstein, Eric Cantor and scores others are barking their heads off.
Plus mid-term elections are near so "Senators" need money and AIPAC will be more than happy to oblige them.

Unless US publlic again pressurizes Senators to move ahead with peace accord as they did aginst strike on Syria, I am not holding my breath.

The deniel is not of holocaust. Mahmoud asked to research the holocuast and find the difference between those orthodox jews that were murdered Vs those zzionists that are in power today. If you do your research you will find out that zzionist jews had a hand in murdering of 6 miillion but the zzionist own media doesn't talk about it. Zzionists are using the sympathy of the 6 million to justify their occupation. still is an OCCUPATION. How can Israel break over 60 UN resolutions and still remain an open bully?

Lets talk about the real holocaust, the 60 million Christians that were murdered by Jews during the Bolshevik Revolution before Germany killed a few hundred thousand Jews. The Jews conveniently want to leave that out of the history books. Tired of hearing this German Holocaust card being played by Jews. They have to have a so called anti defamation organization to hide the truth. The Jew controlled U.S. Senate is always promoting Gun Control and wars. Vote them out of office and America will be better off.

After WWII Jews stole mass amounts of money from the U.S. treasury. With it they bought all of the network TV stations, Production companies in Hollywood, Newspapers etc. to spew their propaganda. The Federal Reserve has nothing to do with the Federal Government but is owned by Jewish bankers, which requires that America turn over it's national income and then turns around and loans Americas money back to it with interest. The biggest Ponzi scheme ever. The Federal reserve law was passed by Jewish congressman on Christmas Eve when everyone else had left for the holidays...SCAM. Vote Jews out of every political office in the U.S. and America will once again attain it's greatness.

All able Palestinians – everyone in the West Bank and Gaza must organize a day when all Palestinians will walk into Israel at every crossing to demand their rights as Palestinians! No guns no weapons a peaceful non violent crossing by Palestinians into Israel. If the Israeli military shoot them keep going – let the world see what happens! It will be better than having Israelis kill Palestinians day by day. This is the solution to the depopulation of the Palestinian people. Better than waiting for Israelis to kill them and take land as they are doing for decades!
