We can’t give Peace Prize ‘based on polls,’ Nobel head Jagland tells Amanpour

October 16th, 2013
07:18 AM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

How, and why, does the Nobel Committee decide whom to award the Peace Prize?

It is a question that arises almost every year in early October.

Unlike the science Nobels, which award work on “Higgs Bosons” and “multiscale models for complex chemical systems,” the work that leads to a Peace Prize can be understood by the layman.

This year, the Nobel Committee bypassed Malala Yousafzai, the popular favorite to win, awarding instead the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

“We wanted to give a signal to the world that now we have the possibility to do away with a whole category of weapons of mass destruction,” Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday.

This year also marks the twenty-year anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which created the OPCW and calls on signatories to destroy their stockpiles.

“Eighty per cent of chemical weapons have been eliminated and more than ninety percent of production capacity,” Jagland said.

Few had heard of the OPCW before it was tasked with dismantling Syria’s chemical stockpile, but Jagland denied that the development had anything to do with his committee’s decision.

“Actually we decided this before what happened in Syria this summer,” he said. “We awarded this organization because of what the organization has done.”

“But of course,” he added, “it’s very important also now to give a kind of moral support to what it is going to do in Syria.”

So what of Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban last year for refusing to give up her fight for girls’ education?

“Malala is an outstanding, courageous woman. She will certainly be a candidate for future years,” Jagland told Amanpour. “We cannot award people or organizations based on polls – we have to look at the will of Alfred Nobel.”

The Committee, he added, only explains why it did give an award, not why it did not.

Amanpour protested Jagland’s characterization of why Yousafzai did not get the Prize.

“Well of course,” she said, “there weren’t polls; she actually took a bullet to the head for peace.”

“The committee has awarded such personalities so many times,” he retorted, referring by way of example to the winner in 2010, Chinese activist Liu Xiaobo.

“But we cannot do it every year,” he said. “We have to also look at the time of Alfred Nobel and the current situation in the world, and therefore we came to the conclusion that this year we should award OPCW.”

The original purpose of the nobel peace prize has its roots in anti war weapons. Alfren Nobel I believe invented gun powder or dynamite or some kind of old school murder method. So bestowing this honor on an anti modern weapon group is fitting. That doesn't take away anything from what Amanpour has done.

Nobel invented TNT thinking he would save minors' lives. TNT is very stable, and minors using gelignite blew themselves up regularly! However, he was aghast that it was being used for warfare. TNT is still used today, and is very much not old school! Amanpour has done nothing! I think you mean Malala.

One doesn't applaud an organization that has failed in its mission. Obviously, chemical weapons are springing up and killing people in Syria because Al Qaeda now has them. The Nobel "Peace Prize" is just a joke! It's all about politics, not about peace. Just look at the guy they gave the prize to who hadn't done anything to bring peace to the world (or even his own country, Barack Hussein Obama - the Droner-in-Chief - who, since receiving his "Peace Prize" has never passes up an opportunity to create more war and chaos in the world. The girl deserved the prize, not a bunch of losers!

Exactly. This is not to downplay what Malala has accomplished, the OPCW has had more time to put multiple accomplishments under its belt. Malala's life and activism is just beginning; she will definitely have her day.

Unfortunately, a Nobel Peace Prize would probably make Malala even more of a target for the Taliban. But, if anyone was deserving and was a beacon of hope for education and peace, it would be Malala.

I am surprised that so many, even Christiane Amanpour, do not seem to understand what the Nobel Peace Prize really is. NPP is not a Human Rights Prize, a prize that Malala possibly would qualify for. There are both people and organizations that have worked for peace for decades that deserves the NPP much more than this brave young girl does. Christiane Amanpour`s poorly hidden meaning and evident fascination of Malala is not of interest to CNN`s public. It seems Amanpour has become to big for her job as a "common" reporter. It is about time she return to earth!

The whole world admire, respesct and love Malala. She does not need the Nobel Peace Prize to be recognized as a

I think they should give the peace prize to the NSA and CIA for working so hard to protect us. They have done a lot more than the OPCW which no one has even heard of. To say they don't use polls is hogwash – their committee votes don't they??? That in itself is nothing more than a popularity contest. Jagland is a political animal and responds to pressure from high placed politicians. The peace prize should never go any sort of organization. The prizes should only be awarded to people.

The Nobel committee can give their prizes based on Nobel's will, not on others will who praise her fight but don't give a d.. to her fight, and still, let her fight alone... We have now invented the concept of guilt money without spending a dime, praising her and trying to give her someone else's money... How insulting...

Needless to go way back and ask – Why did Mahatma Gandhi never ever got it, while Jimy Carter, YAsr Arafat have received Noble prize.... Peace prize is no reflection on any real contribution!
