Safe to assume that the US will progressively play a smaller role in the region. The world is paying a high price for the strategy of radicalising Muslim youth to push the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Exacerbating the Shia Sunni divide is going to yield equally bitter fruit. There is space enough in the middle east for the Saudis and the Iranians and their friends and allies to carve out their spheres of influence without pursuing a destructive pth. The US effort should be to allow a multi polar balance to emerge.
