EXCLUSIVE: Thailand Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra on missing airplane, domestic protests

March 10th, 2014
09:06 AM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

Thailand is investigating the two stolen passports held by passengers on missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Monday.

“We don't know about their nationality yet,” Yingluck told Amanpour, pledging “full support” with international investigators. “We gave orders for the police to investigate the passport users.”

“At the same time, our Royal Air Force has been assigned, together with the Navy, to search for the disappeared airplane in conjunction with the Malaysian government.”

ONLY ON CNN: Thai PM comments on crash

Search and rescue officials said Monday they will expand the search area for the Malaysia Airlines aircraft that vanished three days ago.

“At the moment,” Prime Minister Yingluck said, “we have not yet discovered anything.”

The Malaysian government has divided up the ocean in order to aid the search, she told Amanpour.

While Thailand remains at the heart of the search for the downed plane, Yingluck herself has been at the heart of months of protests.

Her government was largely stable until her party attempted to pass a controversial amnesty bill in November, sparking the current wave of protests. The bill would have nullified a corruption conviction against her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

“We will not return the amnesty legislation again,” she said, but added that the opposition has continued their protests nonetheless.

“Their demands are unconstitutional and undemocratic, which my government cannot accept.”

The People's Democratic Reform Committee has called for the democratically elected Yingluck to be replaced with an unelected "people’s council," which would see through electoral and political changes.

Yingluck’s brother was ousted in a military coup in 2006, and is currently living in self-imposed exile in Dubai.

Many of Prime Minister Yingluck’s opponent accuse her of being a puppet, with her brother pulling the strings of government from abroad.

“May I say that I am…a Prime Minister, who [has been] able to run the country for over two years,” she said. “But I understand their feeling, as I was born from that country so I have used my ability to win the peoples’ trust.”

“If I had to rely on other people or my brother, I believe I wouldn’t have solved the problems,” she told Amanpour, such as massive floods the country faced in 2011.

Yingluck’s government seems to have survived the protests so far, but she still face an ongoing legal challenge over a rice subsidy scheme.

The country’s National Anti-Corruption Commission has said it will bring charges against Yingluck over the program, which pledged to pay farmers well above the market rate for their rice but has run into financial problems.

Yingluck told Amanpour that her government fully briefed the Thai people and parliament on the program.

“There has been no investigation of me yet,” she said. “There is an appropriate procedure to give evidence to the commission, then they can decide the facts.”

Amanpour asked Yingluck if she feared a military coup against her government, especially give the action taken against her brother.

“I believe it is a sufficient lesson for us to realize that the coups are not the way to solve the problems of Thailand,” she said. “I believe that if we keep peace and avoid serious incidents, the military coups cannot take place in Thailand.”

“Today our world has changed. Many countries can see that any rebellious actions are not the solution. And other countries will not let Thailand enter into the coups mode.”

CNN’s Kocha Olarn and Ashley Fantz contributed to this report.

Thailand needs to resolve their problems peacefully but not relegating democratic principles to the background. The Prime Minister needs commendation for not using the army to brutalise her people

Peaceful protest? That's silly and laughable. Armed PDRC guards and their popcorn shooter is more likely the situation. Even police investigators have video and picture evidence of the shooter the corrupt courts still deny police warrants for their arrest. Armed well trained men dressed in black go free a PDRC leader from the back of a police holding vehicle?

I agree with Lanna here and would like to add that an attempt to stage a 'judicial coup' by the 'corrupt courts' is eagerly under way right now.
This is really a dark moment for Thailand to have such a vicious bunch of people like the evil BOSSES of Suthep, Abhisi, the Dem. Party & their adherents, together with those wicked/greedy old military generals.
But no matter what and how, I do believe that the attempted coup will fail and, eventually, democracy will prevail in Thailand. God bless.

Mrs.Yingluck is lying to the world thru CNN. She is incompetence, not a good leader and cheat. We, Thai people had been suffered from her action, a puppet of Mr.Tasksin Chinnawat , She survive for over than 2 years not because of her skill and good judgement but because Thai people allow her to run the country till they has it enough and said NO MORE corrupt and incompetence govt. Yingluck must go to allow Thai people to reform the country base on Democratic system, The reform is to get rid of corruption, police abuse, vote buying....etc. After that Thai people can have an election.

She would if she could, it's because the Thai Army is not yet in the Shinawatra pocket, that's all. BTW extremely disappointing interview from such renowned journalist. Ask her one question out of the script and she is lost as shown in many interviews. Her English and Thai for that matter is abysmal, and that for a country's PM.

PM Yingluck has been too graceful in her attempt to resolve the crisis, in any other country all these PDRC criminals would have already been arrested and thrown into prison for all of the laws they have broken. Now only a handful of them with the criminal Suthep run around causing terror in in Bangkok.

Yingluck Shinawatra, she is the puppet of her elder brother Thaksin Shinawatra. Both of them are the dictators. They are dishonest siblings. They didn't care to serve the people. All things they had done only for themselves and their gang. The corruption are now tearing apart our country. Many farmers committed suicide because of failed Yingluck's Rice policy subsidy. We are the Thais people speaking for the truth that happened in Thailand now as a result of the puppet government who runs the country in the wrong way and misunderstanding all Thais' need and want. moreover, both Thaksin and Yingluck still use violence to the protesters. Many of us were death and injured. This tyranny behavior once happened in the Southern of Thailand in Thaksin's period.

She is a badluck of Thailand. She is so stupid and get bipolar disease. No more Yingluck Shinawatra. Stop damage our country.

Thai people don't support Yinglucks government yet Yingluck and her brother has win every single election by a landslide. That's mean your wrong and your in the minority and the majority of Thai people do support Yingluck. As for Thaksin, he is the only person in the history if Thailand that won an election with a true majority, meaning he as the most popular PM in the history of Thailand but the corrupt court system and the army that staged the coup who appointed the court members that convicted him are the true liars and criminals, writing into law giving themselves amnesty for their criminal activities. Where was the outrage for their amnesty bill?

Suthep's version of the truth is a bullet to the back of your head if you disagree with him. Suthep's truth is that fair and free elections need to be ignored when he doesn't win. Suthep's truth is that he wants his monied friends in power such that he can rape the poor. Did I miss anything?

Yes. Jay Milton, you missed something. Both sides of this conflict are thugs. Don't forget the over 2,000 "extra-judicial" killings of purported drug dealers, most of whom were actually anti-Thaksin villagers during Thaksins "anti-drug" campaign. It is naive to believe that Yinglick is not acting as Thaksins' puppet, although occasionally trying to do his bidding on her own terms as revealed by Thaksins recent statements that she would be a lot more successful if she used the advisors he wanted her to use instead of the "losers" she surrounds herself with.

Recent studies indicate that every major infrastructure project has an additional 35% in costs for bribery and "fees". This, along with the massive corruption in the Rice Scheme is what this battle is all about. It has nothing to do with poor people. It has everything to do with which team of corrupt cronies get to share in the proceeds.

The Nation, one of Thailands two excellent English language newspapers had this to say about the interview...

The nation was disapointed in Christiane Amanpours "weak" interview. I, as a long time fan of Amanpour, was equally disapointed in such passive journalism.

Yingluck is a liar. The anti-corruption commission investigated the allegation of her corrupted rice scheme for over two years. The demand of the protesters are not undemocratic at all. They are not against election but would like to see a meaningful reform before an election. It is a protest against the corrupt government. Election does not mean she has the right to be corrupted. Her government is a dictator in disguise of democracy. Yingluck and her brother, Thaksin, destroy democracy in Thailand and now they are even calling for secession.

I totally agreed. One thing I know, she knew all the questions beforehand. Can't anyone see the way she was answering? It was so obvious the answers were prepared to give her and her party a boost. Unfair to hearing thing one side especially from the deceiving and unshameful current thai government who abuse the power so much. And by the way they know how American loves the word " Domacracy" enough to keep saying it to you. And try to get you on their side. I wonder if they actually know its true meaning because what are they doing to their people and country is against the beauty of its meaning. and by all mean to seek all the opportunity to take to their pockets. How can anyone stands that. People are suffering and refusing to endure any longer that's why they raise up. I love Thailand and the people here. This should never happened. But again, when too much power put in the wrong hands, you kinda know what to expect.

This is for sure a set up interview to clean up Yingluck's reputation regarding the scandal on rice project and illegal loan decree. It's ridiculous that she's been lying over and over even if enormity is revealed to public. Well, being more ridiculous to CNN. The media clearly seen to admit of such lies & make it globalized with no responsibilities. Media distortion is the most brutal weapon for corruptions. I guess CNN now is facing the issue of ethics.

Some one has arranged this interview to give her a boost as she has been on the hide and seek with the protesters.she cannot enter her office in the far she has no fixed address or working place.sad isn't it? I am not sure if she is speaking the facts or not,may be playing with words as usual. The Amnesty bill so far has been frozen by the Senate but it can be legalized any time when a new MPs are elected, one of the reason to rushing new election. The NACC has invited but instead Yingluck sent her lawyer to receive the charges, she will have to give her side of the story within this month. It is not the rice pledge policy,it is the corruption at all levels of the deals and subsequent losses that has to be answered.Hopefully she can clarify but I doubt it.The country were kind with the way she and her Government made a mess of the flood problems in 2011 but as it was only a couple of months since she took over the Premiership, it was massive.please do not glorify it.It was such massive sufferings to the people.

The Thai elective system has always been corrupt to where the majority of the population as rural farmers and villagers barely even knows to which party the representative they are voting for even belongs to. Their families, their friends, village etc.. have voted for a particular representative so therefore that is mostly likely who they will vote for. Add money into the equation and yes you will have their vote and all those around them. Our rural country men are somewhat loyal and honest as you may expect from those with a lesser education trying to make an honest living. If your money can make their life in any way better then why would they need to question who runs the country. UNTIL something drastic happens. But lets not fear as yet. For who controls the media and the police are not the population, but the Government. Lets not also go in what other activities the police might be controlling. As in this case who owns the major TV channels? Mr Thaksin Shinawatra. Thus in the early stages of the protest a lot of false news were being broadcasted, leading to why the mob had to confront these TV stations and popular hosts as such.
The money involved in order to become PM simply leads to further corruption in the Government. Why not subtly (or even less subtly in Taksin's case) use your powers to more money than you've lost.

Now I have rambled on about small part of what has been going on for decades in order to try to give an insight on why I feel it would be necessary to eradicate this vicious circle of corruption and join the more developed countries and their model of how a country should be governed. Whether or not possible, there needs to be a reform. Whether Suthep Thaugsuban is quite the ideal person to lead this change, he has indeed come at the moment. A time where the most horrific decision of allowing Thailand's most corruptly-recorded "person of power"; Thaskin Shinawatra an amnesty bill and the granting him right to return to Thailand and regain access to Billions of dollars frozen funds.
Suthep did not form or begin this protest. That would be the middle class citizens and students of Bangkok, those who are able to rely on other sources of information rather than mainstream TV. Without a leader the cause would've been snuffed out long ago, barely even going down in history.

OP – your arrogance and dismissiveness of the rural Thai is precisely why they don't vote for your party. It's not because of money, which all parties toss around with abandon, it's because they know that officious, infantilistic elitist such as yourself will steal more from them than the party for which they do vote. (At least you had the intelligence not to remind us the rural poor are dark-skinned, as many in your party do.) How damn arrogant of you to declare that the victim of violence brought the violence on themselves - because they didn't report the news as you demanded. You don't control the news, you don't own the stations, but you think you have the right to tell others how they must live their lives and do their jobs. That's why your party can't win a free and fair election, and that's why your party is running away from democracy and towards tyranny just as fast as its fat, thieving legs will carry it.

Pull down your skirt, your twisted knickers are showing.
Op makes a good stab at outlining the situation and your arrogance and dismissive reply are more a sad comment on your own predjudices and entrenched viewpoint than his.
Politics IS inextricably linked to money. The haves versus the have-nots IS the eternal struggle.
Superficially Thailand has 2 parts of the population at each others throats. but the struggle is between the old elite and the wannabe's. Everyone else is a pawn in the game.
From the perspective of Thailand as a whole, IMHO, the problem is not that Taksin/Yinglack won the election. It is the fact that they are consolidating and selfishly manipulating imperfect systems to guarantee the Shinawatra Dynasty for the foreseeable future whilst they have an absolute majority (parliamentary dictatorship).
They, like the previous 'elite', will/do have huge control over the destiny of the Thai people. Like most power hungry plutocrats, they have little genuine concern for Thailand or its population. However, the cronyism, nepotism, gross incompetence, Mega corruption, opaque accounting, and general escalation of all things that have been bad in Thailand for ever and a day; these selfish misdeeds make the whole Yinglack government unfit for office and they have supported if not motivated the current protests. Suthep is damaged goods and is unlikely to be in any future government, BUT he has manged to rally a group that has a useful objective which is reform. Whoever his backers are, they cannot be worse for genuine democracy. It should however be realised that 'adhocracy' is a more appropriate descriptor of the current concept of democracy for many Thais.
In my opinion, anything is better than the current Kleptocracy and the evidence supports me.
But who knows what China or the US think should happen.

Now that you have presented one side of the story on the ongoing protest in Thailand through the mouth of the caretaker government, the picture will not be complete until you grant an equal chance for the protest leader, Suthep Thaugsuban, to speak out.

When Suthep is ready to talk about the dozens and dozens of extra-judicial killings he ordered, I'm sure he can find an audience. Until then, he's just another thug who can't abide that elections have consequences, and that he lost free and fair elections. Suthep wants to take democracy away from the people and replace it with his hand-picked leaders. What more is there really to say? (That won't get a yellow-short bullet placed in your back at Suthep's command.)

Jay,North Korea just had their so called fair election, a 100% votes for the existing leadership. would you call it democratic
elected government? What was John Kerry's definition of democracy? Suthep and Abhisit did admit they've lost the last election but fair or not is another matter.Democracy do not stops in the election but also afterwards,it is a continuous process.During late 2013 when PT government died hard to pass the amnaty bill for a period from 2003 to 2013 including those charges made against both Suthep and Abhisit and Suthey, these two fought hard not to be included in the Amnesty law, both insisted to fight their cases in the law of Court, isn't that strange?Suthep have said times and again,he will report to the authorities immediate after the protest is over. The message was loud and clear.I've never heard that Suthep alone to hand pick a leader. If you've followup what the reform Council is doing since Monday the 10th you'll know that Suthep is a democratic person.Far more democratic than the PT party whereas over 300 Mps follows only one voice what do you call that?

Christiane Amanpour should never have agreed to this scripted interview, on principal. If an interviewer is not allowed to follow up on answers to questions because the dialogue has been agreed on and scripted ahead of time, then it isn't an interview at all but a propaganda session for the interviewee, in this case Yingluck Shinawatre. Her avoidance of questions, skewing of facts and downright lies were obvious. Shame on CNN yet again for presenting sensationalism as news. Christiane, you're better than this.
