Russia ‘financing subversion’ in Ukraine, Poland accuses

April 8th, 2014
03:09 PM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

Russia is “financing subversion [in Ukraine] using the pretext of ethnic problems,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told CNN’s Fred Pleitgen, in for Christiane Amanpour, in an interview on Tuesday.

Those alleged ethnic problems, Sikorski said, “are non-existent.”

Pro-Russian protesters seized government buildings in three eastern Ukrainian cities – Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv – on Sunday.

Rebels occupying Donetsk's regional government building Monday declared a "people's republic" and called for a referendum on secession from Ukraine to be held by May 11.

Strong talk from Poland on Ukraine

“In Crimea and in east Ukraine everybody speaks Russian. The media are Russian and until now there were no ethnic problems there.”

“There are acceptable ways of dealing with ethnic issues,” Sikorski said. “What’s happening in Ukraine is unacceptable.”

Many are concerned that Russia could use the unrest in eastern Ukraine as a pretext for moving in militarily.

If Russia does do that, Sikorski said, “we will go to ‘stage three,’ which means economic sanctions.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday threatened sanctions targeting Russia's banking, energy, mining and arms sectors if the Russians "cross over" into eastern Ukraine.

“Traditionally what happens is the U.S. goes first and then the European Union follows,” Sikorski said, by way of predicting Europe’s actions.

Because of Europe’s greater economic reliance on Russian trade, he told Pleitgen, “American leadership on this is understandable.”

Poland has been particularly outspoken on the Ukraine issue, going so far as to calling a meeting of NATO on the pretext of fearing for its security.

“We were partitioned by Russia in the eighteenth century – literally our country was occupied. And this was also done on the pretext of protecting national minorities.”

“Russia always comes to the assistance of national minorities rather than invading. So it’s an old story. It’s like watching an opera whose libretto is known in advance.”

I think this goes to show that Russia is the crux of the problem Enough w/ the Neo-Nazi crap - Ukraine has a right to make their own choices without Russian intervention.

You nailed it! I totaly agree! Unfortunately russians are watching PutinTV whole day and believe all the propaganda they are told. Looks like the KremlinWriter are allready sleeping rather than posting paid propaganda! Russians should take the Ukrainians as model and also fight for their freedom of oppression! Nothing is as valuable as real freedom! Im so lucky I wasnt born in poor russia but in the rich free world!

Wait, so if it's protests in Maidan that were mostly comprised of masked far right muscle, the CNN call them people's heroes and whatnot etc. And protests in East Ukraine which are comprised of everyone including women and children by the looks of it, lets call it Russian subversion !

Perhaps, just Perhaps the Russian speaking east Ukraine does not want to be under a government whose potential future president calls for their 'annihilation' as Timoshenko did. Youtube v=Te2E1R5YHBI

The amount of shameless bias in this, primitive 'bad and good' take on everything by the media is simply astounding.

UR so right Woopsy. And did you notice that when it comes to anything the Russians or the pro-Russians do, it's always removed from the context?

"We never had this kind of trouble before so it must be the Russian!"

Hello. You staged violent protests in the capital for 3 months and overthrew the elected government! He was our candidate. Our party's in shambles. We don't trust the new to look out for our interests. So we're a little upset. Stop obsessing on Putin and pay attention to us!

Is that how you read it? The interim government and their "western partners" are blaming Russia for everything that isn't working out. They don't want to take responsibility for any of it. The eastern Ukrainians are just Putin proxies to them. And that's a bad sign for the future of eastern Ukrainians in terms of how they will be treated if they accept the status quo.

I thought Ukraninans did make their choice during last elections that were supervised by OSCDE and EU, and then that elected president was ousted by a cue funded and sponsored by CIA. So why is it Ok for west to interfere and not Russia?

"Those alleged ethnic problems, Sikorski said, “are non-existent.”

I wonder how can there Western politians say these things and keep straight face. Unkraine has had ethinc tensions for atleast 500 years, and the fact that for last 5 elections no single party managed to get majority shows its a divided country. Also the pictures from those protests show thousands of people.. are they all "Russian agents".

        I agree with you.

The reason why the western politicians can keep a straight face is because of the oil pipeline running through Ukraine.

Thinking about the potential rewards makes them giddy.

Amanapur and CNN only report one sided accounts of the situation in Kiev. Its as though the only aspects they discuss are those that fit with the US governments narrative. ALL other aspects are ignored. This is not news, this is blatant propaganda. No better than cold war rhetoric. How can a democracy like the US function when the news is propaganda? ITs reached the point where I HAVE to visit RT just to hear the other side.

RT is the shame of newspapers. From years, all as you can see on it are news about the goodness of Hugo Chavez and how many missiles and new combat planes has Russia. "The kings of peace". Pure propaganda. Read a real newspaper "The Guardian" , "New York Times" , "Le Figaro", "CNN" ... you have a wide variety to choose. Ask to you neighbors ... Are they happy with a goverment who persecute the Gay collective? Kills journalists , or use Polonium to eliminate people ...? It remembers me to 40's decade. Putin is closer to Hitler or Stalin than to Rousseo or Franklin or Voltair. And use information to reach his targets. "The great mother russia" .... "A patriot ... an idiot"

Many representatives from Europe and other countries (US Ambassador in Kiev Jaffrey Pyatt) were there in fact, the videos show them giving cookies, you cannot possibly believe that was it right, I mean cookies! The mere public support it's a violation to the rights of a democratically elected president, Plus many protests were financed by Ukrainian oligarch Petro Poroshenko. To get me wrong I do not agree with Russia in many things but it's unbelievable the doubles standards, that many people have.

And now politicans from kiev issue laws on which for Russian language people will imprison. where is democracy????

But they also voted for Russia on referendum! whay? because ukraine didnt give them anything. And now in Russia they will be rehabilitated. you have no idea in which terrible conditions they lived until the Crimea was ukrainian. so stopargue. u dont have any facts! against the truth you will not trample – i mean in alll this situation with ukrania, russia

Poland has more experience with Russia than most countries, and none of it good. Economic, social and political ties have been close with Ukraine for many years – despite the turmoil there. To call Poland an American lackey on this issue is shallow and to warm the Poles from having the same position as the Americans is also shallow. Can Germany have the Kalingrad Oblast back? It was annexed by SU after WWII. Should Poland have its land to the east back since there are still Polish speakers there? As for Ariel – who says Poland is a deeply anitsemtimic nation – come see the soon to open Museum of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

70 years ago Russia defeated fascism. not only in west Europe, but in easten too – i mean in the western Ukraine – Galicia – Banderovites. You caved in under the Nazis – including Poles – and now that you need from Russia. When Banderovites seized the country with a population 50 millions of people. in Ukranine started hounding people. And now if the Nazis start killing people, the Russian people – Russia will do what must. In Ukraine, more than 30 million Russian people. And you – Europe, America, Poland can not demand anything from Russia, trying to learn Russia.
Russia exactly saved you 70 years ago, made you free, you raised from knees. despite all your hate you have to respect this country. and consider the opinion of this country. Once again you are making a mistake by supporting fascism, you are flirting with fascism. As 80 years ago. Again you want to camp on wei Europe? I do not think so.
seems you in Europe again unable to to take the path of freedom. be glad that there is Russia and the Russian people which again will save you from the Nazis. Russians choose only freedom. Hoping that you will understand where evil and where good is.

Also u have to be thankful that you live now, and you live free. and remember till your death that soviet people saved you. dont even try to argue with

I have visited Russia, had many good experiences, and even found relatives there (descendants of “fascist” relatives who were forcibly deported from their homeland). Why does Russia try so hard to have it both ways? - to claim that its “unique” history exempts it from international norms that apply to all other countries, and then to whine when it finds itself surrounded by “hostile” neighbors. Western policy needs to accept that this essentially Russian conundrum will not be resolved for another generation, maybe longer. Meanwhile, my respect and admiration to the brave people of the Ukraine, and may their hopes for freedom and democracy be rewarded.

In 1954, when Khrushchev ceded the Crimea to Ukraine, that was within Soviet Law at that time. Like it or not.
This was Tatar land long in History that the Russians brutally wrested from them by killing many and the rest by mass evictions. If anybody has an historical claim to Crimea, it's the Tatars. Not the Johnny Come Lately Russians.
What do you think the Tatar Protester issues at Sochi Olympics were all about?
Putins Puppets claiming to be Americans commenting here, don't fool too many. Please, if you are real, move to Russia. Since you see it as such a lovely place.

excellent remark: “Russia always comes to the assistance of national minorities rather than invading. So it’s an old story. It’s like watching an opera whose libretto is known in advance.”
