Russian Senator: West always thinks the worst of us

April 10th, 2014
02:49 PM ET

By Mick Krever, CNN

As pro-Russian unrest flares in eastern Ukraine, a Russian senator took his country’s case to the international stage on CNN Thursday, saying Moscow has a “very different” vision of the situation than the West.

“Of course somebody in Western countries maybe prefer to see just bad grace from Russia,” Andrey Klimov, member of the Russian Federation Council, said. “But the situation is quite different.”

“We are thinking only about peaceful exit from this situation, which now happened unfortunately in Ukraine.”

Russia defends intervention

Pro-Russian protesters are occupying a government building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, demanding more independence from Kiev.

Some are concerned that after Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the country may intervene in eastern Ukraine as well.

“Well, first of all, we are looking at this country as our neighbor country,” Klimov said.

In a telling exchange, though, Klimov emphasized the fact that Ukraine – a former Soviet republic – does not have a long history as a sovereign country.

Russia has long advocated non-intervention in sovereign countries, time and again voting against incursions by other countries at the U.N. Security Council.

Pleitgen put that point to Klimov.

The provision of state sovereignty in the U.N. Charter, Pleitgen said, “was put there in large part because Russia and the Soviet Union were invaded so many times by European countries and only managed to push those European countries back with a lot of blood being spilled.”

“Is the Russian political class aware,” he asked, “of the threat that all of this poses to that system of state sovereignty, of national sovereignty, what's going on right now?”

Crimea, Klimov said, was a “unique case.”

“Of course we recognize the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” he said. “But if we are speaking about today's situation, of course we have to mind the history.”

“The history of Ukraine as a sovereign state is something a little bit above 20 years. Ukraine [has] never been a sovereign state for a long period. And of course this is the problem of [a] young state.”

Russia wants Ukraine to be able to solve its problems on its own, he said, “without any pressure from abroad – including pressure from [the] Western world.”

The “revolution” in Ukraine – as Klimov called it – came as a result of provocation from both the West and Ukrainian politicians, he said.

“Some Western people, including people in the White House, they try to blame Russia but do not want to look at their own stuff.”

“There were a lot of situations in…Maidan Square, including participation in that event, some authorities from America and the European Union,” referring to visits from people like American diplomat Victoria Nuland.

“Our diplomats, our senators, our members of parliament [have] never been there.”

Under Ukraine’s former government, Russia offered natural gas to the country at steep discounts; now, Russian President Vladimir Putin has gone so far as to warn that gas deliveries could be cut.

“This is an old story,” he said. “We have a contract. … But unfortunately, Ukrainian government prefer[s] not to pay according to their obligations. And this is the problem.”

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Thursday sounded the alarm bell for eastern Ukraine, saying that Russia has about 40,000 troops massed on the Russian side of the border – “not training, but ready for combat.”

Klimov again repeated the Russian position that those troops are there simply for standard military exercises.

Pleitgen asked whether it was possible for Ukraine to be a member of the European Union and NATO and still be a “good ally” to Russia.

In response, Klimov questioned the expansion of NATO since the fall of the Soviet Union to include countries closer to Russia’s borders.

“If we are partners, this is not necessary at all.”

And besides, he added, “I do not know any serious politician in the European Union who would like to join the European Union with Ukraine.”

Show me the consent of the people in Afghanistan or Iraq or the other nations you invaded. Show the the proof the people wanted the US to invade their countries, to murder and torture their people. You won't be able to because you are wrong.

The US has done FAR worse things in the world than what Russia did with Crimea.

By the way: when you say that Crimea should be released by Russia as it should be part of the Ukraine, you say that the unilateral decision of a dictator should be followed rather than the will of the people. Because until Chruschtschow gave Crimea to the Ukraine, it was part of Russia.

Russians ALWAYS lie! They lied saying they would not takie Crimea. They always lie. They are the first country to invade AND ANNEX another countries territory. They just steal and pretend it's nothing. They always did this, and always said the invasion was to protect their citizens, and always stole territory of other free countries bordering with them. ALWAYS!

Americans ALWAYS lie! They lied saying they didn't want war in Afghanistan or Iraq. They lied saying that Hussein had WMD's. They lied sayin the invasion of Iraq was legal. They lied claiming Hussein had ties to Al Quaeda. They lied saying Hussein wanted to buy yellow cake in Niger. They lied saying they don't torture. And those were just the lies of one single day.

And they have invaded more nations than Russia ever has. But when the US invades a country, thousands always die – unlike Russias invasion of Crimea. So the Russians must certainly be the bad guys because they have not slaughtered and tortured countless civilians in Crimea first – like the US usually does.

OK, so it is fine to invade (without the UN mandate), to massacre, to destroy, and then to escape. And it is bad to "annex" without a massacre. May I ask you why? Is it the Newton's fourth law?

Lol. West always imagines itself as a white-peachy little cuddly thing and Russia as an evil empire.
Yet even Ivan the Terrible was shocked by the St. Bartholomew night thought of West as a horribly barbarous place.
I would add to your list of West’s misdeeds – the annexation of Hawaii by USA, slavery in USA, genocide of Native Americans by USA, and of course very recent West’s crowning achievement – the invention of fascism and Adolf Hitler.

But of course pointing this out will not change anything. The Westerners will continue thinking themselves as paragons of civilization just like Southerners thought themselves superior to Blacks, and Germans thought themselves superior race, and American think themselves “special” and therefore better than anybody else.

The US has annexed other countries before, may be not the ones listed in that post.

Russia has also not annexed Crimea because that would mean it did so against the will of the people in Crimea.

America, however, has illegally invaded many nations, murdering several hundredthousand people doing so.

The question is: what is the greater crime?

The list of nations invaded by the US and it's stooges is not restricted to 2 countries, the list is much longer and the number of casualties countless, the return of Crimea to the motherland after been stolen from Russia in 1954 by the Ukeainian chairman Chroetsjev has been done without bloodshed, quite a difference I would say.

Casualties have been low, so far, only because Russia has such overwhelming superiority in firepower and is known to exercise such ruthlessness that the Ukrainians knew that any armed resistance would have been crushed. And also because it is such a brazen act, completely out of place in 2014 Europe, that no-one outside Putin's cronies imagined he would do such a thing or prepared for it.

But do not assume that the war is over. You are now at war with Ukraine. You can start a war unilaterally but you can't end it unilaterally.

Regardless of what the Russians say, they simply want to relive the glory of the old Russian Empire with Putin as the God-sent Czar of the novo empire. They don't care if somehow they start World War III in the process as long as they become a superpower again. It's great how they can dish out blame at everyone else who doesn't agree with them but can't take any criticism back it when it is they who not only broke Ukrainian law like some of the Kiev protesters, but also broke international law as well with their stealthy invasion of Crimea. They need to pay dearly for any futher incursions into sovereign territory and I think the rest of the world could care less how young or old a country is or what the historical background surrounding the current conflict. Sovereign territory needs to remain sovereign territory, not annexed to a growing empire like Germany was doing in the last century before the last world war. The international community needs to put Putin in his place.

An illegal president who is hostile to Russia represents a national security threat. Russia should start threatening nuclear war against United States if they don't back off and learn to respect their sovereignity. Ya, support countries that have no decency for their fellow people - when you have some free time, look at the labor camps operated by n. Korea. And, how their govt. lives off the backs of their poor, suppressed people.

One thing you also must understand is - you can talk trash all you want about the U.S. - but, they are inclusive - allow people of all ethnicities and cultures to live here. And, with that you get more loyalty and admiration for a country. On the other hand, you have Putin - who is looking out for his Oligarths - a few select that he chooses to take care of. IF he were more diplomatic, perhaps he'd be able to help Russia make progress and become more of a player in democracy. Now he's just trying to revert back to the good old days...

It's always fun to hear what the US opinion in the United States of America thinks of the wolf outside their own borders!

From my point of view the US citizens are so "non critical" to media reports that are sponsored and manipulated by the US government. Also they have the state itself the "NSA" spying on their own like they did in the good old DDR, CIA that lives by their own rules within the country and abroad! Then they start some war and fights around the globe and think they are the only one that might be right all others are wrong! Instead of spending all the dollars on foreign wars, take care of your own country and the old people there!

nonsense. the no-bid contract Putin demanded Ukraine sign was the problem. and further destabilization gazprom is causing with its artificial increases. The first increase was understandable, but not the last two. Russia is trying to destabilize Ukraine, obviously. why else raise the gas not just once but three times? to stall their military when it invades, which it will. Ukraine is a soverign country now, regardless of the past, and no amount of propaganda, scapegoating, lies, or patriotism on Russia's part will change that. Its not your country anymore guys, face facts. It was russia's forces killing protesters, invading crimea, commiting clandestine activites, raising gas prices, their soliders lying in Crimea, them abusing voters there. Nobody quit any western newspapers over this story- how many journalists quit in russia? quite a few. Sorry guys, the West is not as stupid as you think. You are the ones abusing others, not the EU and not the US. You are the ones being lied to,Russia is one of the most corrupt places on earth! You can spit propaganda all you want- no one believes your country anymore, even less than we believe the US which should tell you guys something. 2 2=5 comrades.

The agreement for this gas price was signed even before Yanukovich by former Ukrainian PM Timoshenko who is one of the leaders of pro-EU forces ! And the current "president" of Ukraine Turchinov at that time said in public that this contract is very good for Ukraine ! USA should blame Timoshenko and her friends and not Putin !..

There was a discount for the gas price for last several months due to efforts of Putin and Yanukovich to re-establish a collaboration in the end of 2013. Why should Russia keep a discount NOW? If West is so friendly to Ukraine, it must subsidize Ukraine without trying to frighten Russia.

Moreover, from the reaction of many American posters in the web I see that THEY DO NOT CARE what the US forces do in other countries - whether they kill 100 or 100,000 or 1,000,000 aborigines. They do care only on their own interests.

I can tell you that I have a feeling that the majority of Europeans do not support USA-EU actions in Ukraine. I can speak for "the west" because I am looking at all sides, you and your propagandists however hit any critic of russia hard. why is that? maybe the west feels no need to attack the obvious russian lies, and the russians know their view is dishonest and lies and needs to try to constantly convince the West that they are right. well your simply fascists and the world at large sees it, even your allies. why not listen to video of what world leaders actually say, oh yeah sorry, your country is blocking those videos, according to your own citizens. Think for a second i know its hard: russian media presents one view; west media presents many many different ones. west has many different thoughts presented from warhawks to pacisfists, russia has one... no one is assaulting journalists in France or UK about this; in russia... you know the deal... whose populace is brainwashed. its obvious. hope putin is paying you guys well

Basically the a Russian law maker is saying, Ukraine wants to become a democratic free society and we don't like it. The way the law maker put his case was eloquent though. And on some points he made a fairly good case. But ultimately Russia invaded Ukraine and took a chunk out of it. Just because a country decides to favor a political system you don't agree with, does not give you the right to invade. The thing the Russian law maker doesn't understand, the people will always favor democracy and freedom. Why? Because it is more advantageous to the 99%. Maybe the west does always think the worst of Russia, but if Russia wants that to ever change it needs to learn to do the right thing once in awhile. And the right thing doesn't mean invasion, or deceit and deception. The west will always question the motives of a government that squelches any form of speech criticizing the government. That is what the US stands for still right? Freedom of speech without oppression or persecution?

Putin has not learned a skill vital to world leaders. You can't just keep backing your adversaries into a corner with no escape. In Moldova, Georgia, and Ukraine the options Russia has given their adversary has been "surrender or get beaten". There has never been a face saving exit. Ukraine and the international community gave tacit approval to the takeover of Crimea (vocal protests and meaningless sanctions) and Russia has immediately tried to repeat in other areas of eastern Ukraine. Eventually one of two things will happen, either Russia will stop on its own (unlikely) or the rest of the world will fight back.

A deal is a deal. Yeltsin agreed to respect the boundaries of its neighbours in exchange for keeping the lion's share of military hardware, including all of the former Soviet nukes, and a permanent seat on the UN security council. If Putin and other Russians are unhappy with this deal, well that's just too bad.
