Media in Ukraine ‘under siege,’ says OSCE

Media in Ukraine is “under siege,” a top official from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.
“The situation is extremely dangerous,” Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, said. “I receive reports on intimidation, threats, harassment of journalists on a daily basis. Today, even on the hourly basis.”
Mijatovic is just back from a fact-finding mission to Ukraine.
“Media is used as a tool for manipulation,” she said. “Channels are switched off overnight, like it happened in Crimea, and replaced with channels originating from the Russian federation.”
“So the pattern is known, unfortunately. And it is something that is happening as we speak.”

just to let everyone know. Although it is true that Ukrainian channels are no longer accessible in Crimea, the same has happened in Ukraine with Russian channels. The Kiev government has switched off access to Russian state channels. So, I think this is a case of the pot calling the Kettle black. As they say.

This politician is from the Svabodo party. He beat the director of a Ukrainian tv channel until the man resigned. It happened last month and has been widely condemned. The politlican still walks free. Svabodo has power over the courts of justice, so no wonder. This government in kiev is not supported by Ukrainians. It's a dictatorship and those who ask for Russian assistance can be understood. Putin is not a model of democracy, but he is supported by the majority of people in his country. Crimeans were genuinely afraid of the current Kiev government, as are those in Eastern Ukraine. You can't talk about democracy and at the same time support an undemocratic junta in Kiev. no one voted for them, yet they're there giving hypocrtical speeches about democracy and civil rights. People in Eastern Ukraine only want their rights. Russian language recognition is a long time overdue.
I'm pretty sure the government in Kiev has every right to defend itself from Russian terrorists and Russian propaganda by turning off the channels that promote that. So no, its not the pot calling the kettle black.
Katie, have you read http://www.pravda.com.ua/ ? Ukrainian propaganda is really off the charts. Recently they published a story saying Putin had called the Ukraine population a secondary nation. It was a deliberate misquote of what Putin had said. What he actually said was people in West Ukraine had been historically part of different countries and during that time treated as second class citizens, which is a complete misrepresentation. So, if Crimean can't see Ukrainian propaganda and all Ukraine can't see Russian channels, isn't it the same? I suggest you open your eyes a little.
I'd like to add, you should be careful who you call a terrorist. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. The Russian activists are using the same tactics as Maidan activists. The methods are the same. All people in those areas want are there rights. Russian as a national language.

Individual members of the OSCE should not be allowed to talk directly to the press and CNN should not go on picking those cherries they like best. The organisation collectively does a good information job and Annapour can do what she wants, she can even visit the TV studios in Kiev and tell us what happens there,
And we can expect even more propaganda from Kiev and of course from the non-credible and hypocritical western media, Amanpour included.
My family and myself witnessed the Soviet (Russian) occupation of (former) Czechoslovakia in 1968. Russian specialty is to attack their allies (!) with brute force at the slightest indication of their displeasure with local political affairs. All neighboring countries of former USSR or Russia from Finland to Rumania lived throughout this experience at some point of their recent history. The specific feature of Russian colonialism is that the colonizer is less developed and more obsolete than the countries subjected to its colonial repression. The fall of USSR was a joy for all repressed but a disappointment for former exploiters. It is not surprising that Russia will again try to resurrect their failed empire by whatever means necessary.
The traditional name for Russia was "Prison of Peoples." Nothing has changed.

Imperial powers have certain traits in common regardless of their ethnicity. They have a similar effect on their subjects. A common chant of putin's media campaign is to label anybody who speaks against his imperialism as a 'Russophobe.' You and I both know that this is nonsense. Ukrainian people as with most other countries in the world uniformly see Putin's government as the neo-fascist terrible neighbors that they are.
Suska, what you say about how the US treats blacks and native Americans is just not applicable today. The US has a half black president today, and he identifies himself as a black. As far as the Native Americans go, it wasn't their land to lose. They migrated from place to place, and one thing is for sure. In the 30 years I've been paying taxes, I have not reaped a single benefit as the blacks or Native Americans have. That is in today's time. If the Ukraine wants to go back to Russia, then let them. I perfectly understand the feeling of many Czechs, Poles, Latvians, Lithuaninas, Estonians with this crisis. As a member of Turkish-speaking muslim community of Bulgaria I can complain much more than anybody joining this discussion of Russian imperialism. The Russian imperialist ambitions resulted in severe destruction of my community and that has continued for decades under the Bulgarian administration. But to be frank, in the situation with Ukraine I can't blame only the Russians for the current crisis. Russian media coverage of the situation may be one sided, but the western media who claims to be "independent" is biased as well. The simplest explanation: The protesters in Kiev were greeted as peaceful and pro-democracy (i.e. pro-western) oriented, regardless that they blocked the government buildings, damaged public property and attacked the security forces. They demanded the President to resign, because he favoured Russian offer instead of that of the EU. The same western media witnesses the similar story in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, where people are blocking government buildings, protesting against the Kiev government and their preference for closer relations with US and EU instead of Russia. But this time these protesters are labelled as terrorists, separatists, Russian provocators etc., and the western media coverage, as well as the response from EU and US politicians is in the same directions. Those Ukrainians who would like to be in closer relations with Washington and EU are pro-democracy oriented, but those who prefer closer ties with Russia are terrorists, separatists, provocators. Isn't that whole story ridiculous?

I somewhat agree with you but the fact of the matter is that the protesters in Kiev were fighting for a principle they truly believed in. Kiev has every right to protest and if they were doing something that Ukraine didn't believe in or something they did believe in.... so what it comes down to is Ukraine is not Russia and Putin has no right to even go into Ukraine without the permission of Ukraine.If you really listen to what Putin says you would see that he has no respect for Ukraine and believes it his duty to go in and de-escalate the situation. Your west media is such selective in facts and comments that I can say they are absolutly liars. My colleague's relatives say they all sit home in Lugansk and wish Russia to bring in troops. My wife's friends live in deep village Kirillovka of Akimov region in Zaporozhye. They say good for yanukovich fled, but what people rules in Kiev now is awful.
Need to notice as I understand the mostly moods in the East Ukraine, they want Russia to bring in troops, kill "bad guys" and get away from Ukraine, free of charge. But it is not possible, I think.

When the majority of people in Crimea wanted to join Russia, it's hard to call it an invasion. At the moment, while it's very probable Russians are inside East Ukraine, it is quite understandable when you consider the threat of the Kiev fascists against the Russian speaking population. If Kiev wants to keep Ukraine together, why don't they federalize the state? Give those people in Eastern Ukraine their rights? They won't do that because it doesn't fit their fascist agenda. Media under siege? For months even years the reporting on anything relating to Russia is slightly tainted. It is clearly not objective and almost always is politicized.
This is clear by calling the protestors in eastern Ukraine as terrorists and rebels and not simply the protestors. Clearly some are armed no different as the protesters in Kiev were.
The occupation of government buildings has been a tactic in Ukraine since Nov Dec regardless of who is protesting. Why is it different now?
Legal occupation and illegal occupation is no different in this case the intendant purpose of these buildings is for governing the country not to be held hostage by any group.
The fact that western governments did not show support for the Ukraine Government throughout the Maidan protests and actually showed support for the protestors showed that the western governments showed little to no respect for Ukraines Sovereignty and internal democracy.
To date the Western media have not shown or even explored or shown evidence that, the maidan protests were supported from the entire Ukraine population including the population in eastern and southern Ukraine. And the fact that the eastern and southern population had been the supporters and had voted for the Yanukovich Government.
If the media do not act responsibly and report all sides of the issues equally and unbiased, then they should not be able to operate freely.
Now that the western media and governments have alienated 30% of the Ukraine's population the result will only have one outcome which will at best allow Ukraine remain as a country but likely as a federation. Which is only forcing the situation to be exactly as Russia wants it.

Russian disinformation campaign in full swing thanks to Olga. Here's the reality: Russians shut off Ukrainian TV in both Crimea and portions of Eastern Ukraine. One of the very first things Russian special forces did in Slovyansk was to commandeer the local transmitter there and change it to Russian only channels. Ukraine has epxlled a tiny number (hardly 'hundreds') of journalists linked to the most egregious lies only – there continue to be hundreds of russian journalists in Ukraine. Meanwhile, russia expelled third party US journlists simply for asking questions about Russia. Putin's russia continues its cynical campaign of media control at home (note the recent putinization of RIA Novosti) and even legitimate policial opposition websites, such as those of Navalny and Kasparov and opposition news sources such as Daily Journal are blocked in Russia by the neo facsict regime. The article here deals with the Ukraine switching of all major Russian channels. Little factoid for you: what the Ukraine did was called "repressive" and "censorship" by the OSCE. So yes, the pro-western Ukraine is the bad guy in this story. Wake up and stop believing the propaganda of "US/Ukraine=good, Russia=bad".

I don't agree with everything on RT but it's true, I'm confused too....does the "west" always have to pick one side and the "east" the exact opposite and at the same time each side puffs up and declares it's right? Usually it seems like the best option is somewhere in between. So an OSCE observer (Russia is part of the OSCE) files a report on media intimidation, stating that there is a systematic oppression happening by pro-Russian forces in Ukraine, and that local television channels are being replaced by RUSSIAN originated stations, which takes some technical doing, and people come out of the woodwork to defend Russia, blast Ukrainian "propaganda" and further muck up the report. Of course, the non-sequitors about what the Ukranians have, or will do... does NOT change the fact that the Russians are manipulating the media, something they have IMMENSE experience with. And april 17th Amanpour told that Putin called Luhansk, Donietsk and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine "the New Russia", and that he said "God only knows why those regions are Ukranian", like he is an agressor and wants to annex them. What he actually said, was an answer about the history of those regions, which for centuries were a part of the Novorossia (or New Russia) province, and "God only knows" he said, "why bolsheviks in 20s separated those regions and included them into Ukraine". And that's all he said.
Do you see how propaganda works? Amanpour is simply lying and misquoting, and that is sad. I'm no Putin's fan, I just want to show you how brainwashing works. I recommend you to watch two propaganda machines – CNN and RT, as I do. Getting information from two opposite sides, you can find the truth, that's always somewhere in the middle.

German sending regular army officer as members of the OSCE mission violated the Vienna agreement and was a directed action of the German defense minister. The minister welcoming them back after there release was like “Wickie und die starken Männer” child fair tail. The German involvement is open to speculation.
