By Mick Krever, CNN
Growing international condemnation of Israel’s conduct in its offensive against Hamas in Gaza seems to have totally backfired in Israel, The New York Times’ Jerusalem Bureau Chief, Jodi Rudoren, told CNN’s Hala Gorani, in for Christiane Amanpour, on Wednesday.
“Many people just feel like nobody understands them,” Rudoren said.
Indeed, the Israeli public is overwhelmingly supportive of the operation in Gaza – 95% according to a recent poll by the Israel Democracy Institute. (Rudoren said the numbers she had seen were somewhat lower.)
In her two years covering Israel, Rudoren said she has been examining what effect, if any, the criticism writ large of Israel – from European countries, among others – would have on public opinion.
“I think we've really seen that it's just reinforced this notion that nobody outside of Israel really understands what they're going through, that they're surrounded by enemies, and that they have no choice but to defend themselves”
The astronomical support for the Gaza operation can be attributed, she told Gorani, to several factors.
“One is that there is serious palpable fear here, particularly from the threat of the tunnels that go into Israel from Gaza, through which there have been several attempted attacks during this war. And also of course from the ongoing rocket fire, which they have been dealing with for thirteen years now, and has become much, much more intense and also much, much more widespread within Israel.”
Israelis, she said, see the operations as “the war of no choice.”
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency says, “We have moved beyond the realm of humanitarian action alone. We are in the realm of accountability. I call on the international community to take deliberate international political action to put an immediate end to the continuing carnage.”
Israeli politicians and spokespeople routinely blame Hamas for civilian deaths in Gaza, saying they fire rockets from civilian areas and purposefully expose their own people to harm. That view, Rudoren said, extends to the Israeli public as well.
“They really do see Hamas, the group that dominates Gaza, as complicit in those deaths because they operate from civilian areas.”
“You can see, on social media in particular, just a real polarization, a real hardening of attitudes, a lot of hate.”
“And there are a lot of examples here, too, of the very, very small remaining anti-war left getting quashed.”
This is to express my utter disgust at the US supporting Israel in killing children in Gaza. Unfortunately, this demonstrates, once again, who is running the US. No conspiracy theories!! Its true!! The Zionists ARE. If what Hitler did is holocaust, what are the Israelis doing to the innocent children of Gaza. Its a SHAME that the the US ended under the boot of these merciless Zionists, who control everything – from its federal bank and currency to the rubbish the Americans are fed, which makes them unable to think and respond to anything. Even to MERCI for children.

@ j.s
" in the battlefield you return fire, and you don’t do all the calculation about the schools in the area."
That is exactly how the IDF soldiers, commanders and political leaders will end up disgraced in ‘The Hague’ some day. There are no calculations being made by the IDF. Thats a problem for them now. The world knows this is nothing more than collective punishment – also know as genocide.
What is happening in Gaza is nothing more that state sponsored terrorism. Ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts committed daily by the IDF. To defend the Israeli Government or the IDF means that you have lost touch with humanity – holding hands with the devil. Actually doing the devils work – to be honest. It is a pity that the Israeli people cannot see this.
I am from Ireland – and I guarantee you that an occupying force such as the IDF (the Israeli Government) will never – ever win. It is impossible to beat a paramilitary organisation. The only way out is to negotiate a peace process. It is the ONLY way.
The Israeli Government’s extreme right wing politicians are leading the Israeli people down a road with no way to get off it. They should change there government as soon as possible. The amount of propaganda that is coming from the Israeli government is not working here in Europe either. They (the Israeli Government) have lost all semblance of reality.
Blood lust has taken over the Israeli people. I hope they repent in the near future for the sins they have committed and supported during this frenzy of violent genocidal acts. When the dust settles, Israel will realise what a catastrophic mistake this campaign has been.
The sooner there is a two state solution the better.
Richard Falk, who is Jewish, and the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, appears to agree with you. He is professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University and the author of more than 50 books on war, human rights and international law. In a statement issued by the UN, “Gaza: Silence Is Not An Option,” he called Israeli policies in the Occupied Territories “a crime against humanity.” Falk also has compared Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians to the Nazi treatment of the Jews. On December 15, 2008 Professor Falk was denied entry into Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories by the Israeli government. Professor Falk has said, “I think the Palestinians stand out as the most victimized people in the world.”
Plexus, people like you remind me why we needed to establish the state of Israel in the first place!
Have your friends in Gaza stop lobbing rockets into Israel (for THIRTEEN years now) and stop building tunnels into Israel for military attacks and this war will end tomorrow. What part of this don't you get???
One might think Israel is not interested in peace, since they are the superpower there, and it's been over 30 years since any significant peace.
"The most significant action Israel could take to demonstrate good faith would be a settlement freeze." – President Reagan 1983
The ultra-conservatives have been running Israel for decades, maybe they don't want peace, they want to stay in power. Fear gets votes, just ask the GOP.
It is so "duh" that many people outside of Israel don't "get it". The "international condemnation" of Israel completely ignores Israel's need to defend itself against rocket attacks and tunnel terror. Since it ignores the obvious, it becomes apparent there is something else at work. You go ahead and be disgusted, Thomas, of U.S. support for Israel. I will remain disgusted that our support is not greater and that our leaders go to such lengths to browbeat Israel for all the wrong reasons.
As an Israeli, I can say that this article is absolutely true.
When a terrorist group from Afghanistan attacked the US, the US went to war with much support. A terrorist group from Gaza has attacked Israel, and yet Israel is not seeing the same level of support. Europe is sanctioning Russia for attacking Ukraine, but people are sending more money and supplies to Hamas. Israelis wonder why Washington Post headlines imply that Israel broke the ceasefires, when it was Hamas who broke it. We wonder why the journalists of the world are allowing themselves to be censored by Hamas instead of reporting the true stories. We wonder why the UN has now found Hamas weapons in 3 UN schools and has simply given them back, as if UN schools are now weapons storage depots.
I don't think anybody thinks Israel is perfect, but I would expect a lot more support considering that both the US and EU have previously declared Hamas a terrorist organization and at least the US has previously declared a war on terror.
There are absolutely beacons of hope- the Egyptians are supporting Israel, as well as several other middle eastern Arab countries that we wouldn't expect to. There are several individuals who have written well-worded and balanced pieces on what is happening here. There are some international military experts that are pointing out that Israel does more to protect "enemy" civilians than any other army has ever done. However, these voices are more hidden, less popular, and generally not coming from foreign governments.
So yes, Israelis feel a little abandoned by their usual allies, feel slighted by biased media coverage, and very misunderstood.
Hamas is definitely not the ROOT of the problem. It is but an outcome of decades of tyranny and oppression of a people that has got nothing left to lose and that the world seems unable to help because the world's superpower ensures that the oppression can continue unabated through the unconditional supply of aid and ammunition.
Who, in his right mind, can deny that the world would be a far better place to live if Israel had never seen the light of day?
On the matter of the creation of Israel, Albert Einstein, probably the most famous Jew that ever existed, who was even offered the second presidency of Israel, was quoted as stating that "Apart from the practical considerations, my awareness of the essential nature of Judaism resists the idea of a Jewish state with borders, an army, and a measure of temporal power no matter how modest. I am afraid of the inner damage Judaism will sustain — especially from the development of a narrow nationalism within our own ranks, against which we have already had to fight without a Jewish state".
On the same matter, Sigmund Freud, another famous Jew, stated that "I do not think that Palestine should ever become a Jewish state, nor that the Christian and Islamic worlds would ever be prepared to have their holy places under Jewish care. It would seem more sensible to me to establish a Jewish homeland on a less historically-burdened land. (...). I concede with sorrow that the baseless fanaticism of our people is in part to be blamed for the awakening of Arab distrust. I can raise no sympathy at all for the misdirected piety which transforms a piece of a Herodian wall into a national relic, thereby offending the feelings of the natives".
Never before have those words rung truer. What a mistake the world did in 1948, instead of taking heed of its brightest, wisest minds.
But Israel does exist, and the ONLY way out of this permanent conflict is for the US to weigh in and force Israel's to make peace and arrive at a two-state solution – not the kind of peace that was negotiated in the 1990's. The Oslo Accords were constantly and heavily undermined by Israel who even during the implementation of the accords kept on building settlements in the west bank and all around Jerusalem and would have produced a Palestinian state parceled in a thousand pieces without any control over water points, hence without real autonomy or control over its resources and still economically heavily depend on Israel. Israel would need to negotiate in good faith this time.
Will the US ever take that step? Or more appropriately, what more will it take for the US to take that step?
2 states solution may be desirable but impractical because Hamas and Fatah are at each others throats and looking at what is happening in the region, they might be fighting for a few more centuries. The other is the governnce issue. West Bank and Gaza are miles apart with Israel in between. Three states solution with Arab's bank rolling Gaza may be more practical.
Plexus, people like you remind me why we had to establish the state of Israel in the first place!
If Hamas would stop their attacks you would have had your two state solution YEARS AGO. Plexus, you are willfully blind to the facts.
Yes, we really need someone to "weigh in and force Israel ... to accept a two-state solution." Of course, that was done already once, in 1948, and it lasted about 24 hours. Perhaps you don't remember that, and haven't read enough history to be aware of it, which is why you think it will work this time. Of course, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here.
Who, in his right mind, can deny that the world would be a far better place to live if Israel had never seen the light of day?

Plexus, stupid name, Yout went through a lot of trouble and effort to show what a Jew-hater you are, so biased and racist. Maybe I should write a long CNN comment to show why you, plexus whoever you are, shouldn't exist, and the country you live in should be conquered and its people exiled, killed or made second-class citizens. I'm sure I could find some good arguments to destroy the reason for your country's existence, but I'm not that kind of person.
People like you tried to exterminate the Jews or turned a blind eye when it happened. We had no place to go, boatloads were turned back from countries including the US to their death. Israel has the right of return for any Jew, anywhere in the world for this reason.
NEVER AGAIN! You, Plexus, are an Anti-Semite.
probably b/c your army is on a mission to murder as many children as possible.
A TV reporter from Finland reported seeing a rocket launcher firing rockets at Israel from the Shifa Medical Center in Gaza. She asked people not to make a big deal out of that, so that Israel won't be able to use that to explain its moves against Hamas to the world, so that the world won't say that Israel is right, because it is politicaly incorrect to say that Israel is right...
How many Israeli civilians have died from these tunnels? 0
How many Palestinians have died from Israeli attacks? 1300
Do ur homework u idiot!! If Israel didn't have the "Iron Dome" missle defense system,
THOUSANDS OF ISRAELIS would already be DEAD!!!! Sounds to me u r disappointed!
Would u be happier with those results?!!
Ur the idiot!!! Those rockets are in response for ur occupation and ur recent aggression!!!
Israel Murderers!!
well if it wasn't for the 'iron dome' thousands of Jews would have been killed, idiot.
Judging from the photo in this article you are correct we don't understand how you can celebrate the killing of babies and women. Most of the Zionist are of Polish descent in an occupied land ,oh sorry illegally stolen land with settlements built on stolen Palestinian land to hell with Palestinian security we just put up walls and steal more land and if you have a big mouth we just BOMB the hell out of you and tell the world they do not understand the threat of Hamas rockets on Hamas stolen land.
Im dumbfounded every time some one makes the comparison of what is happening in Gaza and Israel, to some one bombing the United States. This like comparing apples to oranges, one has nothing to do with the other. If the United States squeezed Mixico as an example and stripped its people of the most basic human life conditions and occupied some of there land I bilieve you will have Mixcans fighting too. I'm not siding with anyone here, actually I'm totally against Hamas and there methods, same as the Israeli's and there methods. It is sad that people on both sides are dying mostly on the palistanian with many of them children. Stop the madness , if both sides don't start making tough and hard choices to get along with the other we will never see this conflict in our life time see a resolution.
Lastly to Hamas I say this, yes you are also to blame for the messery of the Gazan's your rockets have not accomplished anything, also your infighting with your brothers ( fateh) who has chosen to negotiate with the Israelis is not helping your cause. God bless all
I live in the west indies I have never been so angry so much so that I cannot go to church what is this david and goliath?israel is a wicked set of people they are behaving as if thier lives are worth more thanthose of the palestinians.where is the united states in all of this .israeles are mad people and I really hope that the un really try to ho ld the irresponxible leader responsible for war crimes, he and all of israel needs to be held rexponsible .shame on sll of you.
Well thought reply to the hateful Thomas Kumar blocked. TJI all over again. Goodbye Ms Amanpour.
Research before speaking!
Thomas Kumar you are ignoring all media outlets that don't support your point of view!
NOT RIGHT !
Some are naive and lack the basic knowledge what is going on. They do not realise that Israel left gaza many years ago by choice but Hamas continues to lunch rockets to Israeli cities since then. Some lack basic fairness. They just expect that we shut up and die. We would not. We are here to stay. When all those Muslim movements would be directed to their true cause – western way of life, maybe they would wake up and realize that Hamas is the aggressor and Israel merely tries, as any country would, protect its citizens.
If Israel "left" Gaza, then why do they block even the basic supplies and humanitarian aid going into Gaza?
because they don't?
Slight correction: Israel left Gaza for one simple reason: it was costing them too much to keep a permanent force in place, so they figured that by getting out and sealing off the territory (which by the way is the most densely populated place on earth) they would achieve the same result at a lesser cost.
And they figured that leaving their buildings and green houses and farms would help the Gazans, who instead destroyed all of it. And they figured that the millions upon millions of dollars donated to the Palestinians would be used for schools and hospitals and parks and malls, but instead was spent on terror tunnels and weapons and launchers. Boy, did Israel figure wrong...
Israel left Gaza but kept it as an open prison. The airport blockaded the sea coast blockaded by the Navy, the border crossings blockaded....why do the Zionists lie.........shame on you
Yep, we feel that no one understand us because we get shelled and it is fine with the world, no tv station reports it. The IDF is very careful, how many times did the US army asked civilians to leave the war zone in any of the wars in the past 40 years. Exactly big ZERO. this is true for any nation at war. The Hamas targets civilians not anything else. As to the population of Gaza, well they put the Hamas in power and let them stay there. it is not and should not be our problem. Nice and peaceful weekend for all (to Gazan as well)
The conflict exists because the view of the conflict by most people is limited to what is see or read in the current media,
and the political leaders use this shortsidedness to hide the real causes of the conflict and distort its history to suit their political "narrative".
But, what is happening today are just simptoms of a conflict that has been going – non-stop – on for almost 70 years.
And the real cause of is very simple: creation of a state for one people on a land inhabited by other people – and the only way to do this without a conflict is to buy all the land for such state.
Until this is understood and acted upon the conflict will continue.
You are exactly right
They are right. No one understands how they can be so hateful.
@ Mossy..I agree the only way to resolve this is by speaking and negotiating but to bring that about there needs to be an honest broker that both sides can trust...Remember Bill Clinton & George J Mitchell where key player to bring about the Peace Process (1997) in Northern Ireland. The problem we have in the current crises is Mr Kerry speaks about a cease fire while arming the Israelis with grenades and mortar rounds plus the US continues to support the Gaza blockade. The hypocrisy is so obvious. The US has considerable sway over Israel but they refuse to use their influence to stop the murder of innocent men, women and children in Gaza. Just contract the language they use to that used against the Russians in Ukraine. The EU and Arab world need to get their act together to counter the Israel / US alliance. But sadly the US has many Arab nations in its pocket. Shame on Arab nations for not being united in support of Gaza, Shame on US for its hypocrisy and injustice it is allowing to unfold, shame yet again on Europe for inaction. Shame on humanity for his inhumanity to his fellow man.
What is appalling about the whole background of this tragedy is that sane academics are in agreement that the priest-scribe Ezra lied when he redacted the Old Testament by stating the Judean exiles were returning to their original Promised Land. Nobody should begrudge the persecuted Jews 1917-1939 and Holocaust survivors being given refugee in Palestine but is seems almost certain that the Old Testament until the Babylonian captivity didn't occur in Palestine but to the south, in West Arabia. Even Israeli archaeologists have admitted there is no proof the Judeans were ever in Palestine before 450 BC.
Israel is SO insignificant that the rest of the world (except the US) really does not care if they exist or not.
ISRAELIS AS JEWS ARE AGAIN IN THE CROSSHAIR OF CHRISTIAN ANTI-SEMITES. BUT THEN, AFTER 1700 YEARS OF GHETTOS, POGROMS, INQUISITION AND FINALLY HOLLOCAUST, A NEW JEW APPEARED: ONE THAT WILL NEVER FORGET, NOR FORGIVE, WHAT THOSE THAT CLAIM TO BELIEVE THAT THE JEWISH ITINERANT PREACHER, JESUS, WAS THE SON OF GOD. IN FACT, THEY ARE ALL PREPAIRED TO RE-WRITE THE OLD AND THE NEW TESTAMENT SO THAT THE TXTS WILL FIT THEIR DEMENTED MENTALITY.
IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT PRACTICALLY ALL COMMENTS AGAINST ISRAEL AND IN FAVOR OF HAMAS (FATAH, HEZBOLLAH, ETC.) ARE POSTED BY CHRISTIANS NOT BY MUSLIMS.
THERE IS NO CHANCE IN HELL THAT ISRAEL WILL ALLOW HAMAS TO CONTINUE ATTACKING ITS PEOPLE UNDER THE "PROTECTION" OF THE CHRISTIAN (MOSTLY CATHOLICS) ANTI-SEMITES.
F off. No one favors anyone, only Jews are acting like monsters and no one can say anything about their relentless and ruthless slaughter or we are antisemite or nazis or whatever you call people today that don't believe your human shield foolishness spewed out in your puppet medias.
"Andrewmag166"
Yours is the type of intelligent argument that only a demented Christian anti-Semite can post. And he does it, hiding behind his computer in fear of Mossad and the New Jew. Don't forget to use the special underwear that avoids your dirtying your pants urinating or defecating in fear when you have to face an Israeli.
Thanks for making my day, dear potz.
Does it hurt to be this stupid?
You don't know what you are talking about. To generalize, Jews are non-Christians. He was crucified by his own people. They mocked him JNRJ [Jesus King of the Jews]
Maybe we should not drag religions in here.
This is no longer about Hamas. Its about the Palestinian people. The issue has spilled to Zionism and Anti-Zionism. And it is spilling deeper into the issue of Racism.
I think Netanyahu is making some mistakes.
If you really want to understand the problems of the Middle East read the recent Economist leading story "The Tragedy of the Arabs" published June14.
"A 7-hour humanitarian cease-fire declared by Israel begins in Gaza without the agreement of Hamas, the group that controls the territory. "
So what did they gain? What did they prove to the world?
Nobody tells them, they go where they want to go, they do what they want to do. That's the message.
Netanyahu is no more guilty or no more innocent than Assad. And if look at the news it's all endless merry-go-round rationalization out there.
I think focus should be the United Nations. It has failed.
Killing each other is what these Israelis and the Palestinians are only capable of achieving, if left to themselves.
The only 'endless merry-go-round' is the scorn and pompous self-righteousness finger wagging by Westerners for Israel's plight.
It always takes two to tango, remember that.
You are saying that an egg came from a hen. Ok, I agree that the egg came from the hen. I wont insist that a hen came from an egg.
What shall we do now with the hen and the eggs that are there?
I wonder, does Israel teach its children that its country was stolen by force from its inhabitants, then given to Jews purely on the basis of religion by Great Britain?
I do not understand why any Israeli would think that being formed the way it was, at the pleasure of Great Britain and as a result of Great Britain's empire building, that some people would not continue to be upset.
Can you imagine if Great Britain had given India to the Christians as a homeland?
Somebody in the past screwed. But they are deemed ended chapters in history.
Some things seem cannot just end. Like when UK leased Sabah from the Sultanate of Sulu. Unlike Hongkong, after the lease, Sabah was turned over to Malaysia when it should have been returned. Today Sabah is one active political volcano that brews, and once in a while it spews.
error: instead of "UK" they should read "the British"
Nazi Germany’s Fascination With Ancient India: The Case Of Heinrich Himmler
The link between Nazi Germany and ancient India, however, goes deeper than the swastika symbol. The Nazis venerated the notion of a “pure, noble Aryan race,” who are believed to have invaded India thousands of years ago and established a society based on a rigid social structure, or castes.
While scholars in India and Europe have rejected the notion of an “Aryan race, the myths and legends of ancient Vedic-Hindu India have imparted a tremendous influence on Germany.
Himmler had a keen interest in the Rigveda and the Bhagavad Gita. According to his personal massage therapist, Felix Kersten, Himmler carried a copy of the Bhagavad Gita in his pocket from 1941 until his death four years later. The book was a translation by the German theosophist, Dr. Franz Hartmann.
