Brazil candidate makes last presidential push

October 1st, 2014
02:35 PM ET

By Mick Krever and Ken Olshansky, CNN

Days before a presidential election, opposition presidential candidate Marina Silva recalled her very remarkable upbringing in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

“I was illiterate until I was 16. I suffered five times from malaria, a few times from hepatitis, also metal poisoning. I lived in slavery. I lost my mother at fourteen.”

“If I were the result of what the past did to me, I wouldn't be here today. But I tried to do something good, productive, and creative with my past and that's why I'm here, full of energy and experience, ready to move on to the next stage.”

Brazil, South America’s economic powerhouse and host of this year’s World Cup and the next Olympics, is in the final days of a dizzying and dramatic presidential campaign – a volatile face-off between the first female president, DIlma Rousseff, and Silva, who portrays herself as David against the incumbent Goliath.

Silva’s unlikely rise from environmental activist to presidential contender was brought about by a tragic surprise, when her running-mate and Socialist party leader Eduardo Campos was killed in a plane crash this summer.

since the early 90s, when Brazil was freed from 20 years of military dictatorship, we have not had much luck with presidents. A row of mediocre presidents was installed in power by the vote, broken only by a exepcional, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Since the arrival of the Workers' Party to power, Brazil has been down across the board and now, according to the polls continue to sink.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso was and is the mediocre one. He literally broke Brazil during his 8 years in office. He lied when he said that the economic stabilization plan was made by him. He won two elections with this lie. All countries of the third world have implemented a similar plan in that period. That plan was made, and everyone knows, by the World Bank and IMF. You guys remember the "Washington Consensus". The problem was not the stabilization of the currency. This was positive. The big problem was the externalities coming along with it. It was not said openly to the general public. The sale of public assets, the irresponsible openness of our economy, with the real value the same as U.S. dollars. Only these measures, almost destroyed our industrial park, bringing our unemployment rate over 16%. Fernando Henrique Cardoso was the kind of intellectual who was not successful in any area. He is intellectually mediocre, and was one of the worst managers that Brazil has already had.

"Killed last Summer" is wrong: he died in Winter. South America is in Winter when the US is in Summer...

Maybe, but she was conducting the interview in the US for a US audience, so she referenced the season in that context. Period.

Brazil is sinking with Dilma as president. Marina is a promise of hope.

Brazil is sinking to where with Dilma?? Before the advent of the PT governments Brazil was the 10th economic power in the world. Now with PT Brazil is among the first 7 biggest economic power. Brazilian unemplyment rate in august was 5%. During the last 12 years Brazil has created 20 million of new jobs. Well, if things keep this way, I do want to continue sinking.

Promise of Hope? Listen to the interview and you can see how marina contradicts herself. The report just told her that the unemployment in Brazil is very low, and Marina kept saying that lack of work is a result of no investment. The Labor Party in Brazil change how the social pyramid works instead of 15 of the rich people controlling and running everything now we have more low income people moving up with one of the fastest middle class growth in the world.
Brazil wasn't the place to products to be launched 12 years ago, everything in technology would launch in developed nations first to months or early later come to Brazil, now we have special events to launch products in Brazil and also industries developing products exclusively to the Brazilian market, bc of our new middle class are eager to buy and have material things that in the past was denied to them.
Marina is a lie and not Hope she wil not stop in her pursuit for power, she changed political party 3 times in less than 4 years, received donation for campaign from people that work in business that goes agaisnt her belief ( ex: she is environmentalist but she received donations from one of the world's largest loggers and land taker) she dont make one decision without checking with the approval of her fellow worker and religious pastor Silas Malafaia. She is NO Hope is just the same of Corrupt politician.

Here in Brazil we have a big difficult because who governs the country nowadays is the PT. He has created a chain of "poor people voters" who depend from him for everything. The PT is very interested in maintaining these people eating , but he is not interested that they have their own opinion. They do everything to stay in power.

No other government in Brazil did for the poor people what PT has done. Do you think those people will vote against their own interests. It is very naive to think this way. And, if you take a close look at Bolsa Familia, for example. You will notice that, besides being a wonderful program to help poor people, it is a huge educational investment. One of requirements made by the program is, every beneficiary has the obligation to keep their childrem in school until their 17yo. They cannot dropout, they have to attend more than 85% of classes, and cannot have grade retention. Only cruel, selfish and egoist people could say that this proram is only to get their vote.

Hi man! Where Do you live? Where didi you see it? I believe you are very, very misinformed. The way you talk hides the truth as it really is. This social program is recognized worldwide: UN / UNICEF and in October in Switzerland will receive the NOBEL Award for Outstanding Achievement in Social Security, ah! Bill Gates also recognized this program.

I agree MARINA have demonstrate in her intervew beeing a person with goowill. The greatest problem in Brazil is lack of a politc system. No use to elect any candidatet, be Marina or whoever it is, there is no future without a politc reform. Its worrysome our future ahead.

What is happening in Brazil right now?? Brazil was controlled and ruled for 502 years by some economically dominant groups that have never had as their main objective to build a country. These groups extracted all the wealth of Brazil for themselves. From this whole process, the most unequal country in the world emerged. Those same groups, economically dominant, with all the wealth in their hands, including state power, and the vast majority of the population with absolutely nothing. Until the early 2000s, Brazil was worldwide known for having within its borders, a Belgium (a small group of very rich), and an India (a large population mass of miserable). With the advent of the PT in government since 2003, this situation is changing radically. For 12 years, the governments of the PT, took off from the pverty more than 50 million people. The PT governments have created over 20 million new jobs. The PT governments increased the minimum wage by 70% above inflation. Millions of young, poor and black, could enter a university, through programs created by the governments of the PT. The PT government implemented the Bolsa Familia (appointed by the UN as one of the most successful programs to combat world hunger). Brazil left the hunger map of the United Nations, because of the social programs of the governments of the PT. However, our economic elites (unfortunately, almost always supported by the United States), are not satisfied. They lost privileges. Now, they have to share the good supermarkets with ex miserable. Now they have to share the airport with the poor, who can now travel to Miami. They accuse the PT government of being communist. They know nothing about communism. Never a government of Brazil supported capitalism as the current one. All programs implemented encourage consumption, which generates the need for production, which generates the need for hiring new employees, which increase income for all, and so on.
