Epic story of human existence in Britain

February 10th, 2014
02:58 PM ET

Imagine that the epic story of human existence in Britain just got half a million years older!

Yes, footprints recently found along the East Coast now dates it back 900,000 years, instead of 450,000 years as previously thought.

Hippos roamed in Trafalgar Square, lions and rhinos stalked the countryside, often when humans were driven out by dramatic climate change in the 10 ice ages that have swept this land.

A timely and eye-opening new exhibition opens later this week at London's Natural History Museum, and CNN’s Christiane Amanpour got a special preview with leading paleontologist Chris Stringer, who curated the exhibit.

Journalists call for release of colleagues in Egypt

February 4th, 2014
06:06 PM ET

Journalists worldwide are demanding the release of Al Jazeera staff detained in Egypt for over a month with the campaign #FreeAJStaff.

The White House has also urged Egypt to release imprisoned journalists and academics. "These figures, regardless of affiliation, should be protected and permitted to do their jobs freely in Egypt," White House spokesman told reporters today.

It's a story we have been covering for weeks, and we will continue to do so.

Playing for time with human lives

January 31st, 2014

By Christiane Amanpour and Lucky Gold, CNN

In his state of the union address on Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama spoke of diplomatic pressure that has forced Syria to surrender its stockpile of chemical weapons.

Now imagine a world where dictatorship, terror and fear – and 95% of those chemical weapons – remain in place.

The United Nations-backed Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) – winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize and charged with locating and destroying those caches of sarin and mustard gas – now says "only a small portion" of the stockpile has been shipped out; perhaps only 5%

As cargo ships wait to transport these weapons to their eventual destruction, the Assad regime is dragging its feet and failing to deliver. It is now eight weeks behind schedule.

In an arena that has long been a bastion of privilege and pedigree, participants can sniff a new whiff of freedom.

Imagine a world where democracy is literally going to the dogs.

In New York next month, the legendary Westminster Kennel Club will be hosting its 138th annual dog show – part beauty contest, part cut-throat competition – to determine America's top dog.

It's the canine crown jewel, famously parodied in the classic comedy film Best in Show.

Standing up for simple freedoms

January 6th, 2014

Imagine a world where one remarkable leader, confined to a wheelchair, stood up for free speech and the end of armed conflict.

Seventy three years ago, Nazi bombs fell nightly on London, killing thousands of civilians.

But on this day in 1941, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt – just elected to an unprecedented third term – went before a joint session of Congress to make the case to help Britain, and prepare Americans for joining the war.

He didn't speak of what or how. Instead, he spoke of why.

He called them "The Four Freedoms,” not just for Americans, but as he stressed in his speech, for people everywhere in the world.

Mandela rises again

December 16th, 2013

By Lucky Gold, CNN

Imagine a world where a great leader is laid to rest one day, only to rise again the next.

No, it's not a bible story.

It took place today in South Africa, after Nelson Mandela was buried in his ancestral village of Qunu on Sunday, carried to his grave in a flag draped coffin, as helicopters flew in tribute overhead.

And today, a giant bronze statue to this giant of a man who conquered apartheid was unveiled in Pretoria in front of the Union Buildings, the seat of government, where he delivered his inaugural address as South Africa's first black president – and first democratically elected president – back in 1994.

The statue had long been planned to celebrate these 20-years of democracy.

South Africa: Proving ground for greatness

South Africans will be able to visit Nelson Mandela’s coffin at the seat of government in Pretoria for a final farewell until the end of this week.

Now imagine a world where three of the greatest leaders of the 20th century first came to light in South Africa.

By now, we know the saga of Nelson Mandela – from activist to prisoner to president to national treasure.

And yet 120 years ago, a young Indian lawyer named Mohandas Gandhi was riding on a train to Pretoria when he first felt the sting of racial injustice – forced to leave the first class compartment he'd paid for and thrown off the train.

It was a life-changing moment.

On vacation, poverty is the new luxury

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” – the long-awaited biopic of the life of Nelson Mandela – opened last week to glowing reviews in New York and Los Angeles.

It is opening this week in London, and has already has broken the box office record in Mandela's homeland of South Africa.

It was sixteen years in the making; so much in the rainbow nation has changed that filmmakers had to find new locations for iconic sites like the infamous shanty-town of Soweto, where middle-class housing and shopping malls have replaced many of the dusty streets where Mandela once walked.

Now imagine a world where you can experience the old Soweto – complete with central heating, optional breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Emoya Luxury Hotel and Spa – a five-star game resort some 250 miles from the real Soweto – is offering a safe and sanitized shanty town experience for its wealthy tourist trade.

Caroline Kennedy: From Princess of Camelot to U.S. ambassador

November 21st, 2013

By Lucky Gold, CNN

Imagine a world where an American princess grew up to become America’s newest ambassador.

Among all the images of the Kennedy Presidency, perhaps the most enduring and endearing are of a father.

Before he became the leader of the free world, JFK played peek-a-boo with Caroline, his new born baby girl.

Two years later, he occupied the Oval Office with his finger on the nuclear trigger – and yet he still made time each day for his growing daughter and her little brother John.
