Syria’s new opposition leader expects more from the U.S.

November 14th, 2012
05:44 PM ET

By Samuel Burke, CNN

The newly elected leader of the Syrian opposition, cleric Sheikh Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, is optimistic after President Barack Obama’s statements about Syria on Wednesday.

The popular Sunni cleric, known for his moderate views, was elected head of Syria’s new opposition group this weekend in Doha. Khatib was jailed four times during the uprising for criticizing the Syrian regime.

In a press conference Wednesday, President Obama said he was encouraged to see the Syrian opposition organizing under an umbrella group and considers them a “legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people,” but said he is not prepared to recognize the group as “some sort of government in exile.”

Despite the fact President Obama stopped short of full recognition of the new opposition coalition  Khatib told CNN’s Hala Gorani, “It is a good step initially and really I appreciate it. This decision and all the people wait for more because the international society for about two years didn’t do anything for Syria’s [people] while the regime killed and slaughtered them.”  FULL POST

Israel in communication with Assad

November 14th, 2012
12:08 PM ET

By Samuel Burke, CNN

The former head of Israel’s intelligence agency, Efraim Halevy, has refused to characterize Syrian shelling on the Israel-Syria border as neither deliberate nor as just an accidental spillover from the ongoing civil war.

Initially Israel did not respond to shells falling in its territory. But on Sunday Israel returned fire for the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

In an interview CNN’s Hala Gorani on Tuesday, Halevy said that at first, Israel purposely avoided hitting a military target; but after the second shelling, Israeli forces hit an artillery battery.

While Israel did this on the ground, it “also sent a message, an oral message through certain channels to the presidency in Damascus that this would not be tolerated," Halvey said. “It would not be to his interest or the interests of anybody in Syria to involve Israel in any possible way in the current fighting.” FULL POST

Did the Israeli military defy PM Netanyahu?

November 9th, 2012
12:34 PM ET

By Samuel Burke, CNN

A sensational story is rocking Israel this week – alleging that the Israeli military defied orders from its commander in chief, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Leading Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan is reporting that Netanyahu ordered his military to prepare for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities nearly two years ago. Dayan's story documents that both the army chief and the head of Mossad (Israeli intelligence) refused to comply with Netanyahu’s order.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Thursday, Dayan said the information came from officials who were in the room with Netanyahu when the conversations took place, during a meeting of Israeli ministers. FULL POST

What the world is telling Obama now

November 8th, 2012
07:21 PM ET

By Samuel Burke, CNN

It's no surprise that David Cameron was the first world leader to congratulate Obama on his reelection Tuesday, considering the two countries' “special relationship” – the term coined by Winston Churchill half a century ago.

But the British Prime Minister also sees big challenges ahead. Cameron has pointed to the global economy and Syria as two issues that need to be tackled immediately.

“I want to talk to Barack about is how we must do more to try and solve this crisis,” Cameron said in Jordan Wednesday.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Wednesday, Britain's Ambassador in Washington D.C., Sir Peter Westmacott, says the U.K. is starting to talk more intensively to some of the opposition elements there; and that the United States is taking the initiative to bring together some of the opposition elements inside and outside Syria.

Mending fences with Obama: Israel says it follows U.S. lead on Iran

November 8th, 2012
07:08 PM ET

By Samuel Burke, CNN

Israel is signaling a major change in tone toward U.S. President Barack Obama now that he has won reelection.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday, Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon, gave what could only be described as a ringing endorsement of the Obama administration’s handling of Iran’s nuclear program. It has been a very contentious issue between the two allies, with the U.S. fearing Israel might unilaterally strike Iran’s nuclear sites and drag the U.S. into an regional war.

But Ayalon told Amanpour that despite past differences with the Obama administration over Iran, “I think today we can safely say that we are very much on the same page and will continue to follow the lead of the U.S.”

Israeli official: Construction in East Jerusalem years away

March 24th, 2010
12:19 PM ET

(CNN) - Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor said Tuesday his government would take two years to implement plans to expand the East Jerusalem settlements in Ramat Shlomo, a plan that set off a diplomatic imbroglio with the United States when it was announced two weeks ago.

"By the nature of the planning process, there won't be any building in that Jewish neighborhood called Ramat Shlomo at least within the coming two years," Meridor told CNN's Christiane Amanpour. "So this is really not a problem now - at least two years, there's not supposed to be any building according to the normal process of planning, that this plan needs to go through."

The Israeli government announced during Vice President Joseph Biden's visit to Jerusalem earlier in March that it would build 1,600 new apartments in largely Arab East Jerusalem. Secretary of state Hillary Clinton later called the timing of the announcement "insulting."

Meridor said he did not think the issue would affect U.S. Israeli relations, nor the attitude of the Obama administration toward the status of Jerusalem.

"They understand that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel," Meridor said. "Nobody that I know of in America or, for that matter, in the Palestinian Authority, think that when there is an agreement of peace, and there are lines, the Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, those who are in East Jerusalem or West Jerusalem, will not be part of Israel."

But Daniel Levy, a senior fellow at the New America foundation, told Amanpour that the White House would be looking for an acknowledgement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his meeting with President Barack Obama Tuesday evening that the Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem would one day be part of an eventual Palestinian state.

"No one is asking Israelis and Palestinians to fall in love," Levy said. "Israel unfortunately is addicted to the settlements. If Israel's ready for peace, it could stop settlements."

"It could say to the international community, 'You guarantee security, you run this,'" Levy added. "I think we need now a concrete American plan not to deal with one settlement, but to deal with the entirety and to get a border."

Sari Nusseibeh, president of Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, voiced doubts that the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank would allow the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel - a "two-state solution."

"I don't see how a two-state solution, based on East Jerusalem being the capital of a Palestinian state, is going to be possible under the circumstances," said Nusseibeh, whose school describes itself as the only Arab university in Jerusalem.

"When you're talking about settlements, I know that the focus today is on 1,600 new housing units in a particular area in Jerusalem, Ramat Shlomo, or whatever," Nusseibeh said. "But you forget the fact that Israel has been building across the green line in East Jerusalem for the past 42 years. And we already have more than 250,000 people living across the green line in Jerusalem, in East Jerusalem, and in the surrounding areas."

(CNN) - A top official in the Palestinian militant group Hamas lashed out at the son of a Hamas founding member who says in a new book he was an Israeli spy for a decade.

"The Israelis issued this book as a kind of propaganda. When you say that he was working for his enemies, it means that he lies for his own people, and we expect that there are big lies in this book," Osama Hamdan told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview from Damascus, Syria.

"He's a big liar. He lost his faith. He lost his moralities. And he's working for the enemies who are killing his own people, who are arresting his father, and who are occupying his country," Hamdan declared Wednesday.

In his book, Mosab Hassan Yousef says he gathered information about Hamas terrorist plots and fed them to Israel's domestic security service Shin Bet, and thereby saved countless Israeli and Palestinian lives.

Yousef, in an interview with Amanpour, said he did it because he came to believe that Hamas was practicing "exceptional cruelty" against its members and "killed people for no reason."

He wrote a book, "Son of Hamas," from his new base in the United States, where he has lived since 2007.

CNN could not independently confirm his story, and Israel has refused to comment.

A journalist specializing in intelligence matters on the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Yossi Melman, said he believes Yousef's story, even though some people say he is exaggerating his role.

"I know that his story is, generally speaking, accurate, (but he) may be slightly over inflating his own role and its importance," Melman told Amanpour.

New York (CNN) - The son of a founder of the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, Tuesday told CNN that he was a spy for Israel.

For 10 years, Mosab Yousef said he gathered information about Hamas terrorist plots and fed them to Israel's domestic security service Shin Bet.

Yousef, in an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, said he did it because he came to believe that Hamas was practicing "exceptional cruelty" against its members and "killed people for no reason."

He has now written a book, "Son of Hamas" detailing his exploits from his new base in the United States where he has lived since 2007. CNN could not independently confirm his story and Israel has refused to comment.

In the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, a former Israeli handler said of Yousef: "One insight of his was worth 1,000 hours of thought by top experts."

Yousef told CNN: "They offered me to work for them. My goal was to be a double agent and attack them from the inside."

But then his views changed.
